Subaru Impreza wrx 2nd generation. How long do different Subaru Impreza engines last? Types and characteristics of engines Subaru Impreza

11.03.2020

Charged model Subaru Impreza The second incarnation of the WRX began its history at the turn of the century - in 2000.

Compared to its predecessor, it has changed in all directions and has lost its two-door body design.

During its "life cycle" the car was modernized twice - in 2002 and 2005, and in each case it changed noticeably in appearance and received a modernized technical component.

The car remained in service until 2007, after which it experienced another generational change.

The second "release" of the Subaru Impreza WRX is a traditional sedan or five-door station wagon of the "compact category" with the following external dimensions. Vehicle length is 4465 mm, width - 1695-1740 mm, height - 1440-1485 mm. Its wheelbase extends to 2525 mm, and the ground clearance does not exceed 155 mm. In the "traveling" form, the "lighter" weighs from 1365 to 1425 kg, depending on the version.

Under the hood of the "hot Impreza" of the second generation were placed gasoline boxer "fours" with a volume of 2.0-2.5 liters with multi-point "power supply", 16 valves and turbocharging, equipped with 218-250 Horse power and 292-333 Nm of rotational potential.
The engines worked together with a 5-speed "mechanics" or 4-speed "automatic", which were installed in conjunction with the all-wheel drive system.

The "second" Subaru Impreza WRX extends on a "bogie" with a longitudinally oriented motor and a part of the body parts made of aluminum. On the front axle of the car is applied independent suspension with McPherson struts, and on the back - multi-link architecture.
On all its wheels are ventilated disc brakes working in conjunction with ABS and other electronics. The machine is equipped with a rack and pinion steering system and power steering.

The positive features of the "charged" model are: bold appearance, reliable design, powerful motors, excellent "driving" qualities, high practicality, excellent handling, roomy interior, good equipment and other points.
True, there are also disadvantages in the car's arsenal, namely: high price real spare parts and service, great appetite and low level comfort.

Impreza sedans and station wagons appeared in the Subaru lineup in 1992, and in 1995 a coupe version debuted. The car was equipped with four-cylinder boxer engines 1.6 (100 HP), 1.8 (115 HP) and 2.0 (135-155 HP), and in Japan there was also a modification with a 1.5-liter engine. Later, versions 2.2 and 2.5 were introduced to the American market with a capacity of 135 and 165 forces, respectively. Subaru Impreza was offered with both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, since 1997 the export of front-wheel drive cars has been discontinued. The gearbox could be a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic.

The real fame of "Impreza" was brought by modifications with turbo engines, on the basis of which cars for rally races were created. The engine of the WRX version developed 240 forces, and the Subaru Impreza WRX STI received engine variants forced up to 250–305. "Charged" cars were offered only with "mechanics" and all-wheel drive. In Europe, there was also an Impreza GT with a less powerful 211-horsepower power unit.

In the US, buyers were also offered the Impreza Outback Sport with an increased ground clearance and a plastic "off-road" body kit. A similar car on Japanese market was called the Gravel Express, and under the hood it had a motor from the WRX version.

2nd generation, 2000-2007

In 2000, the second generation Subaru Impreza appeared. The car had versions with sedan and station wagon bodies (the coupe disappeared from lineup), and front-wheel drive cars were offered only in Japan, in other countries it was possible to purchase only the all-wheel drive "Impreza".

Under the hood were "boxers" with a volume of 1.5, 1.6, 2.0 and 2.5 liters. The turbocharged Impreza WRX was equipped with a two-liter engine (215-250 hp), and since 2005 - a 2.5-liter (230 hp). The WRX STI version featured not only a more powerful engine (265-280 hp), but also a retuned suspension and a rear differential lock. The model was restyled twice, in 2002 and 2005.

3rd generation, 2007–2011

In 2007, the third "Impreza" debuted, and for the first time - in a hatchback body, a year later a sedan appeared in the range, but there was no station wagon version. The car has become larger, but technically it has not fundamentally changed - boxer four-cylinder engines, four-wheel drive, manual or automatic transmission. In the Japanese market, as before, there were front-wheel drive modifications.

Gasoline engines 1.5 (107 hp), 2.0 (148 hp), 2.5 (170 hp) were installed on the Impreza, and in 2009 in Europe they began to offer a car with a two-liter turbodiesel with a capacity of 150 hp. from. In Japan, there was also a version with a two-liter gasoline turbo engine. The WRX and WRX STI versions received a 2.5-liter turbocharged engine, in the first case it developed 230-265 hp. with., and in the second - up to 300 forces, and on small-scale special versions there were even forced up to 400 liters. from. motors. For the first time, "charged" modifications of "Impreza" were offered not only with mechanical, but also with automatic transmission gear.

Having survived a subtle restyling in 2009, this car lasted on the conveyor until 2011, but the "hot" versions continued to be produced, but under a separate name and. In 2010, on the basis of the hatchback, a modification with increased ground clearance and an "off-road" plastic body kit was also created.

4th generation, 2011

From 1992 to the present day, 5 generations Subaru Impreza. These compact cars produced in hatchback, station wagon, sedan, coupe bodies. Some models were used in different countries as police cars. Parallel to base model release started Subaru line Impreza WRX, and in 1994 there was an improved version WRX STi... WRX and WRX STi - all-wheel drive sports cars, which were equipped with more powerful turbocharged engines.

Types and characteristics of engines Subaru Impreza

All Subaru Impreza engines were 4-cylinder, four-stroke, horizontal opposed (H4), mostly gasoline. An engine with a camber angle of 180 ° is called a boxer engine. Until 2006, only EJ series internal combustion engines were used, then the EL15 Subaru Impreza engine replaced the EJ15. Since 2012, Subaru Impreza has been equipped with FB engines. EJ series engines up to 2L were produced with only one camshaft (SOHC), in the EJ20 and EJ25 lines there were also models with 2 camshafts (DOHC). All of them were 16-valve, that is, they had 4 valves per cylinder, some were equipped with turbocharging. EJ series engines with a turbine were installed on the Subaru Impreza WRX and WRX STi:

  • volume of 2 liters - various modifications of EJ20T - EJ20G, EJ20K, EJ205;
  • 2.5 L capacity - EJ255 (US market only) and EJ277.

The EL15 is the only EL engine. His distinctive features- the presence of 2 camshafts and the system active management valves AVCS. The same system is used in the FB series. It includes DOHC engines with increased piston stroke and reduced bore (FB16 stroke 82, bore 78.8 mm, FB20 stroke 90, bore 84). As a result, engines have become more environmentally friendly and economical.

AVCS is Subaru's efficient gas distribution technology. The system controls the intake valves and adjusts the position of the camshafts based on data from a number of sensors. Intake camshaft can be rotated up to 35 ° in the desired direction, the reversal angle depends on the oil pressure, which is regulated by the control valve. At low load and on Idling valve opening is delayed, the higher the load, the earlier the intake valves open and close. As a result, for the same fuel consumption, engine power is increased and emissions are reduced.

The only diesel engine Subaru Impreza - EE20, internal combustion engine with a volume of 2 liters, 147 hp. with., DOHC, installed on models of the 3rd generation. This is the first ever experience of using an opposed diesel engine on the passenger cars... Minimum volume Subaru engines Impreza - 1.5 liters, maximum - 2.5 liters. The most powerful among them is the EJ257 engine (305 hp), which was equipped with the Impreza WRX STI MY08-MY17 for the American market.

Resource and causes of breakdowns

Subaru horizontally opposed engines are usually called “boxers” because of the specificity of piston movements, they resemble the movements of the hands of rival boxers. The advantages of these ICEs include high strength, good balance, minimum vibration during operation, and a resource reaching a million km. In practice, Subaru Impreza engines serve 250,000 km or more without overhaul. On the forums, you can find reviews of car owners who, for more than 300 thousand kilometers, only changed the cylinder head cover gaskets.

True, this does not apply to turbocharged engines, which are designed specifically for sports cars. All modifications of EJ20T engines are subjected to intense loads and often need to be overhauled after 100-150 thousand kilometers, and sometimes overhaul does not help, the unit simply cannot be restored. The most reliable engines are considered to be up to 2 liters - EJ15, EJ16, EJ18. But the Subaru Impreza with 2.0 engines is more popular because it is more powerful. The FB series engine resource, according to Subaru engineers, has been increased by 30% compared to the previous generation. The main disadvantage of Subaru EJ and EL engines is due to design features complexity of service. In the FB range models, access to the engine for service is simplified, the timing chain is now maintenance-free.

Subaru Impreza engines, like any gasoline internal combustion engines, suffer from the use of low-quality gasoline and oil, untimely oil change, aggressive driving, operation at maximum crankshaft speed. The inner surface of the cylinders is prone to chemical corrosion, which can be provoked by a high sulfur content in gasoline, and mechanical abrasive wear (abrasive inclusions contain carbon deposits). As a result of these processes, they wear out faster piston rings, oil consumption increases. When using low viscosity oil, the pistons get stuck, too high viscosity leads to oil starvation. Engines are demanding to warm up, especially in winter.

For engines with a volume of less than 2 liters, 92nd gasoline is recommended, with a volume of 2 liters or more, 95–98th. The oil must be selected for the season in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations, the optimal replacement frequency is 7.5 thousand km. For complete replacement requires 4 to 5 l engine oil, depending on the engine modification. Another measure that can extend the life of the engine is the installation of an additional crankcase underneath.

On the Russian roads the risk of breakdown or deformation of the crankcase when hitting an obstacle is quite high, in addition, a fair amount of dirt gets into the engine. In Subaru Impreza cars, the standard engine protection does not always cope with its task. In case of damage, you can purchase a contract. Crankcase protection structures are also available from third-party manufacturers. They are made from steel, alloys, composite materials. They not only protect against adverse mechanical and chemical influences, but also make it difficult for hijackers to access wiring in engine compartment... When installing additional protection, it is important to select it correctly in accordance with the modification of the body.

Different engines have characteristic weak spots and typical problems:

  • in different modifications EJ20 - knock of the 4th cylinder, it arises from the imperfection of the cooling system. A brief (2-3 minutes) knock after starting is normal. A knock on a heated car for up to 10 minutes is an alarming symptom indicating the need for major repairs.
  • wear, play of valve covers and camshaft oil seals, leading to oil leaks. If the malfunction is not corrected in a timely manner, the oil pressure drops, all the symptoms of oil starvation occur;
  • in turbocharged versions - deep rings, leading to increased oil consumption;
  • the EJ25 line has many of the weaknesses of the EJ20, but they also have their own drawbacks. Thinner walls of larger-diameter cylinders are subject to overheating, the cylinder head is often deformed, and gaskets leak. In versions EJ257 and EJ255, the inserts are often rotated;
  • in FB20, the catalyst is very vulnerable, sensitive to the quality of gasoline and oil level. In models manufactured before 2013, cylinder block defects are common, and coked oil scraper rings cause increased consumption oils.

The operation of a car with a failed catalyst, a faulty cooling system has detrimental consequences, untimely replacement fuel, air, oil filters, candles. Frightened by myths about the difficulty of replacing spark plugs in cars with horizontally opposed engines, owners often try to delay this moment. In fact, it is not necessary to remove or even raise the engine for this procedure; it is enough to disconnect a number of parts located on top. The process for the GC8 model with the EJ205 engine is demonstrated in the video below. With old spark plugs, the engine begins to triple, its dynamics deteriorates, fuel consumption and volume increase harmful emissions, the motor eventually fails.

Another problem that is not related to the engine itself is a break, displacement of its pillow (support), usually manifested by a noticeable vibration. Replacing the engine mountings of the Subaru Impreza is a rather expensive undertaking, but it cannot be neglected, otherwise the subsequent ICE repair will cost even more. You can save money if you can find a contract engine mount in good condition... There are many models of supports, so before buying it is important to make sure that the part matches your car model.

Subaru Impreza engine repair

First of all, Subaru Impreza engines need replacement cylinder head gaskets... But it is better to buy a complete repair kit, which includes gaskets for valve covers and bolts to them, pump gaskets, inlet and outlet valve stem seals. It is cheaper than purchasing consumables separately, and all these elements need to be replaced quite often. It is advisable to immediately buy tension and bypass rollers for timing belt, cylinder block and cylinder head bolts. The indigenous and connecting rod bearings, it is better to change them when disassembling the engine for preventive purposes, even if the condition is satisfactory. You cannot save on consumables, be sure to use original ones. For the first time, you can try to decarbonize coked oil scraper rings, remove, clean and install again, but this is a temporary measure, it is better to replace them immediately.

What other parts need to be replaced will become clear in the process of disassembling the engine. Camshaft and crankshaft journals, pistons must be measured with a micrometer to determine the degree of wear. Quite large-scale and expensive types of repair work may be needed:

  • replacement of the oil and water pump;
  • timing belt replacement;
  • replacement of the crankshaft. You can try to resort to grinding, it eliminates scoring, but does not help when bending the axis of rotation. In addition, the crankshaft may have internal cracks that are not visible, but will make themselves felt after repair;
  • repair of the connecting rod-piston group - replacement of heavily worn pistons, deformed connecting rods;
  • cylinder head repair... Replacing this block in most cases is not required, it is enough to grind the plane, adjust the valves, replace valve stem seals;
  • boring of the cylinder block (it is not always possible to find a specialist who can perform this procedure).

Subaru Impreza engines (with the exception of those installed on the WRX and WRX STi sports cars) are highly maintainable. But there are situations when, due to extremely careless operation or after an accident, the engine cannot be repaired. If the crankshaft or cylinder block needs replacement, renovation work taking into account the cost of new components, it will be too expensive, it is more cost-effective to replace the entire engine. But not everyone can afford to buy a Subaru Impreza engine when it comes to a new unit, because this is one of the most expensive units. But the contract engine for the Subaru Impreza GG3 EJ15 will cost; no more expensive than a major overhaul.

The cost of contract units varies quite widely, the engine model, the car donor's mileage, and the condition of the engine matter. Sometimes the goods reach the buyer, passing through the chain of intermediaries, which also affects the price. JapZap buys all spare parts at auctions in Japan, prices are affordable due to high turnover and the absence of intermediaries. In addition, here you can purchase with a guarantee contract engines from Japan without a run across the Russian Federation. Much has been said about how the quality of gasoline, oil, roads, driving style affect the condition of the engine. Engines from Japanese showdowns in this regard outperform power units removed from cars that were operated in the Russian Federation or the United States.

Subaru cars have long been surrounded by a cult halo. They are loved, they are dreamed of ... What is so unusual about them?

Subaru cars have long been surrounded by a cult halo. They are loved, they are dreamed of ... What is so unusual about them? Four-wheel drive? But many have it. Unusual design? It is unlikely that you will call it that, Subaru in a number of similar "Japanese" almost do not stand out in this sense. Specifications? Powerful boxer motor? You say - they say, Impreza won the World Rally Championship several times. But others also won. So what's the deal? Let's try to understand this, and the racer of the LogoVaz-Belyaevo team, Alexander Zheludov, will help us.

Already at a glance at new Subaru Impreza WRX is clear: the car is serious. Swollen wheel arches, which barely fit wide 17-inch wheels with ultra-low-profile tires, a huge air intake for the intercooler on the hood, a front bumper-spoiler with built-in powerful foglights ... Two big-eyed headlights are trying to mitigate the situation - but they are not very successful. Moreover, it is because of them that the front end of the new car is not liked by most fans of the "old" WRX.

As before, the Impreza station wagon is the same length as the sedan. Volume luggage compartment This, of course, does not add, but the absence of an elongated rear overhang gives additional dynamics to the appearance of the car, not allowing it to be perceived as a banal "shed", albeit fast.

Opening the door (the glass is still without frames), you find yourself ... in the salon of an ordinary japanese car... Everything is done very high quality, thoughtfully, modern, but somehow without a "zest", without inspiration, even the Momo steering wheel does not help - there is no sportiness in the cabin that the car actually possesses.

The seats are quite firm, with well-developed lateral support, although they are more comfortable compared to the previous Impreza. (The company seems to have followed the lead of its grumbling customers, who simply did not fit into racing bucket seats.) But now they are height-adjustable.

All controls, including auxiliary ones, are easily accessible. With the correct fit and steering wheel adjustment, the readings of the instruments are perfectly readable. The speedometer and tachometer with a red zone from 7000 rpm dominate here.

The gearshift lever is located right at hand, and you do not need to reach for it, even if you need to engage in fifth gear. Lever with small strokes, no backlash, gears are engaged firmly and clearly - you always get where you need to. The steering column switches are located no less conveniently, the wipers and lights are controlled in Japanese, by turning the heads - you have to remove your hand from the steering wheel. The "climate" is regulated by rotating knobs - very clearly. Having set the desired temperature, I forgot about climate control, and he, in turn, did not remind of himself. The back seat is molded for two, and they can sit comfortably enough; the three of us will already be cramped.

There is not too much space in the trunk (for a station wagon), which in this case is forgivable, especially if you still need to transport something large (I strongly doubt that you will use the Impreza WRX for this), the back rear seat can be folded in parts or as a whole - as on "adult" station wagons.

Under the hood is the now famous turbocharged 4-cylinder opposed 2-liter displacement, producing 218 hp. at 5600 rpm We tinkered with the engine settings - the power remained the same, but the moment increased by a couple of Newton meters, and most importantly, it moved to a zone of more low revs, which should be useful for a quiet ride.

Start key. The engine starts easily and runs almost silently at idle. I turn on the first one and get under way smoothly. Oddly enough, the clutch pedal is soft - on a sports car, the clutch transmits a lot of torque, and therefore is usually very stiff. But this is even more convenient when driving in city with its numerous traffic jams.

Moving quietly like a normal car, shifting gears around 3000 rpm, the WRX behaves like a regular station wagon with a 2-liter engine. If you sharply press the gas at 2000 rpm, then ... nothing will happen either, only a smooth acceleration will follow, but in the region of 3000-3500 rpm. it acquires a real sporty intensity, which is observed right up to the triggering of the limiter.

Based on the characteristics of the engine and after several trips around the city, I have developed two tactics of road behavior. The first implies a tough aggressive style with driving in low gears, while the engine speed should not fall below the coveted 3000 mark.

The second is a calm ride in a stream without sudden overtaking and rearrangements. If there is a blockage ahead and you need to get past it, you just need to switch one or two gears down and press the gas. However, having made such a leap, you “start up” and return to measured movement with difficulty.

The suspension, which seemed too stiff at low speeds, becomes more comfortable with increasing speed, and in turns and when changing lanes, it keeps the car almost parallel to the road. At the same time, the Impreza behaves in a front-wheel-drive way - when the "threshold" speed is exceeded at the entrance to the turn, a slight demolition of the front axle begins, it was not possible to cause a skid of the rear axle without special techniques, however, the asphalt was dry. In general, turns are a separate story. I wish there were more of them - the combination of steering characteristics (excellent reaction force), rigid suspension and all-wheel drive is so successful here.

The brakes also pleased. They are very efficient and the pedal force / stroke ratio is almost perfect. ABS works accurately and starts acting as late as possible, which allows accurate calculation braking distances even at very high speeds.

The day flew by unnoticed, I didn't want to part with the WRX - in her company you feel like a real conqueror of space: bends, overloads, a glimpse of the landscape behind tinted windows ... piloting.

What is the 2001 Subaru Impreza WRX? A successful film often has a sequel with the index "2", which is sometimes followed by "series 3" and even "series 4". Everyone is looking forward to the continuation, although it rarely happens that "Film-2" is better than "Film-1". And if the person is not familiar with the "source"? He will like Taxi-2, for example. And "WRX-2" too ...

The designers of Fuji Heavy Industries took the previous WRX model, which was essentially just a "conditionally civilized" version of the real WRC rally car, and "civilized" it for real. The body has slightly increased in size (from the rear passengers - thanks) and has grown heavier by more than a hundred kilograms. Since the number of "horses" remains the same, new car slightly lost in agility, but still gets to a hundred within seven seconds.

Interior design - one notch higher, suspension - more comfortable, pedals and steering- take it easy. Overall Impreza WRX is now closer to normal road car, which should attract buyers who were simply afraid of this car before - the right market move. But "in my heart" the car remained itself. Do you know how

connoisseurs in some countries call WRX (read "double-u-ar-ex")? The beginning is discarded - the "rex" remains, that is. Rex. In Russian - "King".

Subaru Impreza / WRX / XV

Subaru Impreza is a well-known golf class car, produced since 1992. Place the Impreza, among other Subaru representatives, is between the Subaru Trezia and the mid-size Legacy. The main competitors of the Impreza: Mitsubishi Lancer, Toyota Corolla, Ford Focus, Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra, VW Jetta.
In addition to the regular version, the turbocharged Impreza WRX and WRX STI were also produced, which in the market competed mainly with the Lancer Ralliart and Lancer Evolution.

Engines Subaru Impreza are mainly flat 4-cylinder EJ in a variety of designs. The simplest versions were equipped with 1.5-liter EJ15 and 1.6-liter EJ16. The top-end variants of the Impreza WRX and WRX STI used the EJ20 and EJ25 turbo. The weak 3rd generation Impreza used a 1.5 liter EL15 and a diesel boxer 2 liter 4 cylinder engine. In the fourth version of this car, the new 1.6-liter FB16 and 2-liter FB20 were used. For sports modifications, the Impreza name was removed, and now they are simply called WRX and WRX STI. Their engines are FA20 on WRX and EJ25 and EJ20 on WRX STI.
The engines on the XV crossover are no different from the regular Impreza.
