Ford Mustang year of manufacture. Ford Mustang: an ageless legend

08.03.2020

In this article we propose a short history legendary brand, by which you can trace everything Ford models Mustang from 1962 to present.

1960s

In the early 60s, global automakers were faced with the question of what to offer the post-war baby boom generation. For this purpose, Ford decided to create a special model of a personal car based on the Ford Falcon. A competition was announced within the company, in which the winner was the project that laid down the canons of the future “pony style”: sharply defined sides, a long hood and a shortened rear end.

The first “Mustang” was conceptual model Mustang I, introduced in 1962. Double sport car was named after the legendary World War II era attack aircraft P51 Mustang. The second generation of Mustangs was shown to the public at the New York Auto Show in 1964. The car was equipped with a 170 in³ 6-cylinder engine, three-speed transmission, closed wheel covers, original instrument panel, bucket seats and carpeted interior.

The first production version of the Mustangs was the Wimbledon convertible, whose sales exceeded all expectations. Already 12 months after its release, almost 420 thousand copies of this car were sold. By the end of the 60s, “pony cars” were almost universally recognized as the highest achievement of automotive design.

1970s

With the advent of the 70s, Ford stopped producing original Mustang models based on the Falcon platform. But during this period, the largest versions of the Ford Mustang appeared, created on the basis of the GT350/GT500 and Boss 302/429. They were almost 600 pounds heavier and 1 foot longer than the first models. The Ford Mustang Mach 1 was also presented to consumers with an impressive range of power plants, the most impressive of which was the 429 Super Cobra Jet (SCJ) with a power of 370 hp.

In the mid-70s, Ford introduced the second generation of Mustangs with a completely new design and a line of Cobra II engines. The car was equipped with a non-functional air intake on the hood, front and rear spoilers. In versions with a V8 engine, American engineers installed a 4-speed manual transmission.

1980s

During this period, tightening environmental restrictions forced many manufacturers to reduce engine power. The Ford company was no exception with the Mustang model - the 4-cylinder was removed from the line, the car received a new aerodynamic body. The convertible body, which was produced in the 60s, also returned to the assembly line.

1990s

This time became an era of design and technical progress for the Ford Mustang. In honor of the 30th anniversary, the car was significantly modernized, improving the already excellent performance characteristics. 1,330 of the vehicle's 1,850 components were replaced. The fastback body was no longer produced, leaving only a convertible and a 2-door coupe. For the first time, a driver's airbag was included as standard. All cars in basic modification equipped with an improved 4-cylinder engine.

The fourth generation of the legendary pony car received sharply defined lines, a new hood and grille, stylish wheel arch trims, updated headlights and fascias. At the same time, the manufacturer brought a small batch to the market exclusive model SVT Mustang Cobra with enhanced performance and original styling. In 1993, a limited number of racing versions of the Cobra R sold out before production began.

2000s to present day

In the new millennium, the Ford Mustang remained almost alone on the market. Pontiac Firebird's closest competitors are essentially not developing and are not pleasing consumers with updates. At this time, Ford is producing the 300 millionth Mustang and celebrating the 40th anniversary of the popular model.

Although Mustang production at the famed Dearborn plant ceased in the 2000s, models assembled at other plants were put on the market. First of all, it should be noted that the model Mustang Shelby GT, an exclusive turbocharged version of the Shelby GT500 power plant 500 hp, limited edition Mustang Bullitt.

In 2013, the sixth Ford generation Mustang in convertible and coupe body styles. In April 2014 legendary model celebrated its 50th anniversary. During this time, more than 9 million copies of the car were sold. Half a century has passed, but the Mustangs have retained the easily recognizable elements of the classic design and their character, for which they are idolized by numerous fans around the world.

2018 Ford Mustang GT review: car exterior, interior, technical content models, security systems, equipment and price tag. At the end of the article is a video review of the 2018 Ford Mustang GT!

Review content:

Official debut of the sixth generation of oils Ford car Mustang took place at the beginning of 2014, and exactly three years later in Detroit the manufacturer presented its updated modification.

In comparison with the pre-restyling version, the car received a slightly retouched appearance and the interior acquired new options and upgraded engines, among which the powerful 5-liter gasoline engine installed on the Ford Mustang GT modification, which will be discussed later, is of particular interest.

Before moving on to the review, let us remind you that The first Ford Mustang rolled off the assembly line back in 1964., after which it managed to change six generations and sell millions of copies around the world. Moreover, despite its more than 50-year history, the model remains to this day one of the most desirable and best-selling pony cars in the world.

Exterior of the Ford Mustang GT

The updated Mustang GT is attractive, aggressive and dynamic appearance, in which the signature features of the primitive model are still discernible.

Front of the car is represented by a massive hexagonal radiator grille with the family emblem of a stallion in the center, a predatory look of head optics with LED filling, a new hood and a muscular front bumper with spectacular air ducts, a splitter and horizontal stripes of foglights.

It is noteworthy that in comparison with the pre-restyling model, the leading edge of the hood of the new Mustang became 20 mm lower, which made it possible to increase the aerodynamic properties of the car.

New product profile has classic muscle car proportions: long hood, domed roof, massive wheel arches and large alloy wheels. Separately, it is worth noting the presence of elegant stampings on the sidewalls and the “5.0” nameplate, once again informing us that we are facing the most powerful version of the car.

Strict feed flaunts spectacular LED side lights, a spoiler on the trunk lid and a monumental rear bumper with a pre-installed sports diffuser and a pair of double exhaust pipes. The “GT” nameplate is also located here.

The external dimensions of the model have the following characteristics:

Length, mm4784
Width, mm1916
Height, mm1381
Wheelbase, mm2720

The track of the front and rear wheels is 1.574 and 1.651 m, respectively. The exact ground clearance height has not been announced, but it is unlikely to differ much from its predecessor.

Available to potential car buyers wide palette of body colors, including three new colors, as well as 12 variations rims, shod with low-profile tires from Michelin.

Mustang GT interior design

Compared to the pre-restyling version, the new Mustang GT has a more attractive and modern interior, which is due to the upgraded Sync Connect multimedia center, as well as a 12-inch digital instrument panel.

Driving a car is carried out through a strict and attractive multifunction steering wheel with the Mustang logo in the center. The central panel, in addition to the multimedia and information complex, is represented by three laconic air duct deflectors, a music and climate system control unit, as well as a number of mechanical toggle switches responsible for activating various muscle car systems. It is also worth noting that the materials used and the assembly are at a very, very high level (although there were also hard plastics), so that even after a while the interior will not be bothered by squeaks and rattles.

Front passengers the car offers anatomical seats with a grippy profile, where a person of any size can easily sit. An alternative is Recaro sports bucket seats, which reliably support the passenger's body even during high-speed cornering.

Since the interior has a 2+2 layout, there is a small sofa behind the front seats that can only accommodate children and petite girls. However, it is worth recognizing that the Ford Mustang never sought to play the role of a family car

Trunk volume It is small and only 408 liters, although this will be enough to fit the luggage of two adults and two children going on a short trip.

2018 Ford Mustang GT Specifications

The restyled Ford Mustang GT is based on new platform, which has a similar layout to the front-wheel drive CD-4 truck, represented by a completely independent suspension architecture at the front and rear, which, in turn, is represented by MacPherson struts and a modernized multi-link on the subframe, respectively.

As an option, the car can be equipped adaptive system MagneRide shock absorbers, inside of which there is a special magnetorheological fluid.

Under the hood standard Ford The Mustang has a 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine producing 317 hp, while the GT version has a more powerful 5-liter gasoline V8 generating 466 hp. and 569 Nm of maximum torque.

It’s worth mentioning here that the increase in power, in comparison with the pre-restyling model, was achieved thanks to the increased compression ratio to 12:1 (versus 11:1 previously) and the installation of a combined fuel supply system.

The engine is paired with a 6-speed manual transmission or an advanced 10-speed automatic transmission, with which the car provides acceleration from 0 to 100 in 3.9 seconds. and can develop maximum speed 250 km/h (electronically limited). Fuel consumption in mixed driving mode ranges from 11-12 l/100 km.

Already in the base, the muscle car is equipped with an electric power steering wheel, which has several operating modes: normal, sport and comfortable.

Brake system is represented by powerful disc brakes with a ventilation system, the diameter of which is 320 and 380 mm on the front and rear wheels, respectively. Separately, it is worth highlighting the presence of a self-locking rear differential and several preset operating modes of the suspension, engine and other electronics, allowing you to choose the most optimal one depending on your driving style and the type of road surface under the wheels

About the car

The Ford Mustang is a Pony Car segment vehicle produced by Ford Motor Company.
The first version (1964/65 - 1973) was created on the basis of a family Ford sedan Falcon. The first production Mustang rolled off the assembly line on March 9, 1964 as a 1965 model (among collectors, the unofficial designation “1964 1/2 model” is used for Mustangs produced before the fall of 1964). On April 17, the car was presented to the public in New York, and on April 19, it was shown on all three American television networks. The promotion of the car was accompanied by an active advertising campaign. It was one of the most successful premieres in the history of the automotive industry. More than a million Mustangs were sold in the first 18 months.

The first prototype of the car under the motto Mustang (1962) was a two-seat mid-engine roadster in the spirit of European sports cars of those years with an extremely unusual, futuristic design.

However, there was little interest in the concept from the public, and the conceptually similar two-seater (more precisely, simulating two-seater due to the removable plastic fairing over the rear seat) Ford Thunderbird Sports Roadster did not become a bestseller; But the sporty versions of the Ford Falcon compact, like the Falcon Sprint, turned out to be very attractive to consumers, combining the capacity of a family sedan with a brighter appearance and slightly improved dynamics.

1964-1973

Ford Mustang Convertible 1964

The first Mustang left the assembly line on the morning of March 9, 1964, and by the end of that year, 263,434 cars had been sold. In mid-1965, a fastback model was introduced, aimed at the rival Plymouth Barracuda and looking more harmonious than the base coupe. The car with a convertible body was also very attractive in appearance.

The stylistic “key” of a successful luxury Continental coupe Mark II from the mid-fifties, with its characteristic proportions with a long hood and short trunk and plastic body sidewalls with a break in the arch area rear wheel. However, in comparison with it, the appearance of the Mustang was less strict and more dynamic.

The design was considered very successful for its time, although unconventional for America - there were even opinions that in this regard, the Mustang, with its clean lines of a relatively compact body and a moderate amount of chrome in the trim, was closer to European rather than mass-produced American models those years with their characteristic excessive sizes and excessive enthusiasm for shiny ornaments.

From a technical point of view, the car was not a revelation.
The base engine was a well-known six-cylinder power unit from the Ford Falcon in the USA, bored to 170 cubic inches (~2.8 liters), it was equipped with a three-stage manual or two- and three-stage CVTs.

The front suspension was generally borrowed from the same Falken, and was structurally a variant of the usual parallelogram suspension on two wishbones - in this case, the shock absorber in a block with a spring was moved out of the space between the arms and placed above the upper arm. Such a suspension (in America it is called “double-wishbone”) was a little more compact than a conventional parallelogram, in particular, freeing up space for large engines V8. Stabilizer lateral stability was offered as an option.

The rear suspension was dependent, with longitudinal semi-elliptic springs and a rigid drive axle beam.

The base brakes were drum brakes on all wheels; a vacuum booster was offered as an option. The picture was completed by a worm steering mechanism with circulating balls from Falken with a large gear ratio (power steering in those years was a relatively unpopular option in this class).

As a result, although controllability and ride quality car and were better than the base model, the Falken, due to a lower center of gravity and changed chassis settings, but not by much.

Ford Mustang 1965

In 1965, the standard Mustang interior added separate power-adjustable driver and passenger seats, an AM radio, and a floor-mounted shift lever. Also available as options were sun visors, a manual mirror remote control, a floor console and a bench seat. front seat. Also one of the interior options was the “Rally-Pac”: a clock and tachometer mounted on the steering column.

In April 1965, buyers were offered the GT package, which included: tuned suspension, sharper steering, front disc brakes, dual exhaust system and special body paint.

Ford Shelby GT350 1966

A particularly powerful modification from the famous studio of racer Carol Shelby - the Shelby GT350 - was produced in a fastback body, equipped with a 289 V8 engine, boosted to 306 hp. and was sold in salons to anyone who wanted it.

Ford Mustang 1966

In 1966, the base Mustang began to be equipped with a 120-horsepower inline-six engine with a displacement of 200 cubic inches (3.2 liters). Three 289 V8 engines were available as options, with power ranging from 200 to 271 hp. The Shelby GT350 version was now available in four colors, with an automatic transmission and a Paxton mechanical supercharger, which allowed the power to be increased to 420-430 hp when the engine reached a certain speed. Also in 1966, the Mustang was one of the first to receive a mono AM/FM car radio, and sun visors became standard equipment.

When sales of the Ford Mustang began in Germany, it was discovered that this name had already been registered. A German company offered to sell the rights for $10,000. Ford refused and removed the "Mustang" badge, calling it the "T-5" for the German market.

1967-1968

Ford Mustang 1967

By the 1967 model year, the Mustang gained length and height, and most body panels underwent a transformation accordingly. The front end began to look more “aggressive”; the fastback, which rear window and the trunk lid were now located on the same line.

Ford Mustang 427 Drag 1967

The Ford Mustang GT 390, remembered by many from the feature film Bullitt, was created to compete equally with Chevrolet Camaro SS 396. The market demanded powerful cars, and Carol Shelby could not help but respond and introduced the Shelby GT500 - an even more powerful modification of the Mustang. Under the hood of the new product was a 7000 cc V8 developing 335 hp. In 1968, the Mustang received a simpler grille and 427 engines producing 390 hp, which performed well on the street. In the same year, on April 1, Ford announced its one of the most famous engines - the 428 Cobra Jet, with larger valve plates and a Ram Air air intake system, which, with a stated power of 550 hp. easily developed all 610. From the same year, modifications of the GT350 and GT500 began to be called Shelby Cobra, and a convertible body became available. At the same time, modest six-cylinder models continued to be produced, offering a striking sporty appearance and image for reasonable money.

Three-point seat belts were introduced for the first time in 1968. The "Rally-Pac" package was no longer offered as the new instrument panel already had a tachometer and clock.

1969-1970

Ford Mustang Boss 429 1969

By 1969 model year year Ford Mustang underwent repeated modernization, moving further and further away from the original concept: with the same wheelbase, the length of the car increased by 3.8 inches (~10 cm), weight - by 140 pounds (~70 kg), and model line new versions appeared - the cheap E, the luxurious Grande and the sports BOSS and Mach 1. The Ford Mustang in 1969 became the first model to use a four-headlight headlight design; the headlights were placed inside and outside the radiator grille.

The BOSS 302 was built to compete with the Camaro Z/28 in Trans AM racing. Version with 429 V8 with 375 hp. intended for NASCAR and equipped with Ram Air-induction and special exhaust manifolds. Under the hood of the Mach 1 there was a 351 V8, and as an option it was possible to order a self-locking cross-axle differential rear axle and even a 428 Cobra Jet engine. Shelby Cobra versions were available in fastback bodies and convertible and became more and more luxurious, equipped with a 428 Cobra Jet V8 engine producing 335 hp.

Ford Mustang Boss 302 1970

In 1970 model year Ford took a wait-and-see approach and left the Mustang virtually untouched, changing only the front end and making a few other minor updates. It was Last year for modifications of the Shelby Cobra, which remained virtually untouched from last year, unlike the base Mustang.

1971-1973

In addition to the Shelby Cobra, the BOSS 302 and BOSS 429 modifications also disappeared. The Mach 1 modification, equipped with the famous 351 Cleveland V8 engine with 285 hp. and was still available. The new BOSS 351 was introduced and was faster in the 1/4 mile than the 429 Super Cobra Jet Ram Air.

Ford Mustang Convertible 1973

Following the powerful versions, the decline of the Mustang itself came in 1973 - engine power ratings were again lowered, and it turned out that the base engine produced 95 hp, and the most powerful 351 cc V8 produced only 156 hp.

1974-1978

Ford Mustang 1974

This was already the 2nd generation of the legendary muscle car. Ford was revising the concept of the American Pony Car in the face of the gasoline crisis and changing consumer tastes. But, the car was much closer to the original 1964 concept than later first-generation models.

The car was small by American standards, even smaller than the original 1964 model, and had basic configuration an in-line four-cylinder engine bored to 2.3 liters, developing a “shameful” 86 hp for America. The choice of power unit was determined by considerations of fuel economy. A 2.8-liter V6 Cologne engine and, since 1975, a small, by American standards, V8 with 140 l/s at 4.9 liters were available as options.

During the first four years of production, about 400,000 cars were sold each year.

1979-1993

Ford Mustang Cobra 1979

In 1979, the Mustang was based on the larger "Fox" platform (it was originally developed for the 1978 Ford Fairmont and Mercury Zephyr). The interior has been restyled to accommodate four people more comfortably, despite the narrowed backseat. Body styles included coupe, sedan, hatchback and convertible, and were classified by trim level into L, GL, GLX, LX, GT, GT Turbo (1983-84), SVO (1984-86), Cobra (1979-81, 1993 ), and Cobra R (1993).

Catering to the European fashion for small and low power engines, Ford had to leave the big sport, but in September 1980 everything changed dramatically, even a special department called SVO was created (from Special Vehicles Operations - literally, the Department of Special Transport Operations). Their “brainchildren” are special models of Mustangs for participation in the most prestigious and most exciting race - Trans-Am. Price racing car started at $25,000, while a standard car could be purchased for $6,000.

The third generation of the Mustang combined two different body styles. From 1979 to 1986, the car had a triangular front end and four headlights, referred to by enthusiasts as the "4-Eyes". Then, from 1987 to 1993, the “shapes” became more round, in the “Aero” style. In addition, in 1986, Ford introduced an EFI (Electronic Fuel Injection) engine modification instead of a carburetor. There were three units under the hood to choose from: an in-line “four” and V-shaped six and eight cylinder versions. The four-cylinder modification, by the way, came with a turbocharger, which showed quite good results in road tests - acceleration from zero to 100 km/h in 11.5 seconds, with a power of 88 hp. For comparison, the largest unit at that time, the 302nd block, allowed it to accelerate to 100 km/h in 8 seconds.

In response to falling sales and rising fuel prices, an all-new Mustang was developed in the early 1980s. It was to be a front wheel drive small block car based on the Mazda MX-6. But thanks to the objections of concerned people, Ford management did not change the traditions of the American muscle car, and the “Japanese Mustang” was not destined to see “ Big world" As a result, Ford Motor is making another facelift for the Mustang, and a creative version on the MX-6 platform was used in 1989 on the Ford Probe.

1994-2004

Ford Mustang GT Convertible 1994

In 1994, the Mustang underwent its first major redesign in its fifteen years. Codenamed SN-95, an updated rear-wheel drive version of the Fox-4 is being released. Patrick Schiavone's new styling borrows some of the styling cues from previous Mustangs. For the first time since 1974, a coupe (fastback) model was not available. Innovations include an anti-lock brake system and a 230-watt “Mach 460” music amplifier with a standard CD deck.

The base model had a V6 232 block (3.8 l) with a capacity of 145 hp (108 kW) in 1994, and starting in 1995 the same modest six-cylinder, but more productive 150 hp (110 kW) , and remained on the assembly line until 1998. The choice of gearbox was also not very wide, with only a five-speed manual and a four-speed automatic available. There was a long-awaited surprise for lovers of big engines: on the Mustang GT and Cobra modifications, after almost thirty years of use (successful, I think), Ford is replacing the V8 302 block (4.1 l) with a new, smaller, but more productive V8 281 -m (4.6 L) SOHC. This small-block was originally rated at 215 hp (160 kW), but by 1998 it was increased to 225 hp (168 kW), and thanks to the engineers of SVT (a reorganized SVO, now an acronym for Special Vehicles Team), they managed to “overclock” it to 305 hp (227 kW)!

Ford Mustang SVT Cobra 1999

In 1999, the Mustang received new design with sharper contours and larger wheel arches, but its basic proportions, interior design, and chassis remained the same as the previous model. The standard 3.8 L V6 was rated at 190 hp (140 kW) and was available until 2004, while the Mustang GT with its 4.6 liter 8-cyl and 260 hp (190 kW) debuted During this period, it gained a steady pace of production. The most powerful of the factory modifications is the Cobra, its engine was rated at 316 hp (235 kW) at 6000 rpm, the transmission was a five-speed manual Tremec™ T45, which easily allowed it to accelerate in first gear to 72 km/h.

In honor of the 35th anniversary, Ford released the anniversary Limited Edition GT 1999, which was decorated with 17-inch alloy wheels, special side skirts, a sports spoiler, an aggressive air intake, chrome parts body and silver leather interior. The car was offered in four colors: silver, black, red and bright white.

Original road test of the 4.6L Mustang SVT Cobra:
Drag racing 1/4 mile in 13.8 sec at 164 km/h;
Acceleration 0-100 km/h = 5.6 s;
Maximum speed = 240 km/h;

Original road test of the 4.6L Mustang GT:
Drag racing 1/4 mile in 14 seconds at 160 km/h;

There are also three alternative modifications offered in this generation: in 2001 Bullitt (modification included a black "running horse" emblem on the hood, fog lights, lowered suspension and no rear wing), in 2003 and 2004 Mach 1 (modification included unique alloy wheels, body appliqués, flat spoiler, open grille and functional hood scoop), up to 390 hp (290 kW) and the legendary Cobra (the most powerful “civilian” modification).

2005-2013

Ford Mustang S-197 2005

At the 2004 North American International Auto Show, Ford unveiled a completely redesigned Mustang, codenamed "S-197", which was based on an all-new D2C platform. Developed under the direction of Chief Engineer Hau Thai-Tang and designer Sid Ramnarace, the fifth-generation Mustang's appearance is reminiscent of the fastback Mustangs of the late 1960s. Ford's senior vice president of the project, J Mays, called this style "retro futurism"

The base model is equipped with a Ford 4.0-liter V6 engine with SOHC gas distribution system, which replaced the 3.8-liter version used since 2004. New engine produces power 210 Horse power at 5300 rpm and torque of 325 Newton meters at 3500 rpm. This engine Comes with standard five-speed manual transmission Tremec T-5 gears. An automatic five-speed gearbox “5R55S” is optionally installed. The GT version of the Mustang features a 4.6 L SOHC Modular 3-valve V8 with variable injection controlled by VCT and produces 300 hp (224 kW). The 2005 version has an approximate weight-to-power ratio of 11.5 pounds per horsepower. Although the Mustang GT is equipped with the same automatic transmission transmissions identical to the V6 model, an optional Tremec 3650 5-speed manual transmission can be installed, with which you can use the additional power of the GT model more efficiently

Ford Shelby GT 500 2007

In 2006, the updated Shelby GT500 was released, available in convertible and coupe body styles. The Shelby GT500 differs from ordinary Mustangs in its specific appearance and color, as well as the presence of a number of sporty elements, while remaining a comfortable and well-equipped car with sports seats made of genuine leather.

Ford Mustang Shelby GT 500KR

And in the same year, 2006, the world premiere! Ford and Shelby are building a powerful sports car, the Ford Shelby GT500KR, with a 5.4-liter, 540-horsepower engine with a 6-speed manual transmission. There is an air intake on the hood for additional cooling. There is also a lower spoiler at the front with an air intake to cool the brake system. One thing is upsetting: the Ford Shelby GT500KR was released in a small batch, only 1000 cars. This is the embodiment of American ideas about what a muscle car should be in a modern guise.
In addition to standard modifications, Ford could not bypass the tradition of special, limited editions, which include:

DUB Edition

Ford has announced a new version sports model Mustang, which should allow it to connect with a “whole new” generation of buyers. This car was prepared with the direct participation of the Roush tuning studio and the editors of DUB magazine. The Dub edition model is equipped with a 3.7-liter V6 unit producing 305 horsepower (224 kW) and is available in both coupe and convertible body styles. The kit includes light alloy wheel disks TIS 20" diameter, sports Pirelli tires and body kit from Roush.

Parnelli Jones Limited Edition

In 2007, the Parnelli Jones Limited Edition was first shown at the New York Auto Show. The color scheme is faithful to the golden era of Trans-Am racing. Engine power from official sources is 370 l/s (272 kW).

X-1 Edition

Prepared by special order of the US Air Force special version combat show car codenamed X-1, equipped with a 4.6 liter 500 horsepower (368 kW) engine. There is only one place inside, located in the center. Dashboard consists of three LCD displays surrounded by many toggle switches and buttons. The displays broadcast images from night vision cameras installed on the body. The X-1 does not have a steering wheel in the usual sense; instead, a joystick steering wheel is installed on the central tunnel.

In 2010, the model is undergoing a slight restalling; the body has become more aerodynamic. The base engine remained unchanged, but for the GT version the 4.6 liter V8 was revised, and began to produce 319 hp (235 kW) at 6000 rpm of the engine, when the maximum torque of 441 Nm was achieved at a lower load - 4255 rpm .

In 2011 electric amplifier The steering wheel is again replaced by a more reliable hydraulic one. Available as a 6-speed transmission manual transmission MT82 and 6-speed automatic 6R80. The updated aluminum 227 block (3.7 liters) weighs 18 kilograms less than last year. The 24-valve V6 now has a performance of 309 hp (227 kW) with a torque of 380 Nm and is equipped with a new dual exhaust.

The GT modification is equipped with a 32-valve 302 block (5.0 l) 412 hp net power and 19-inch alloy wheels.

The Shelby GT500 has a 5.4 liter engine with a power of 550 hp (410 kW) and 690 Nm of torque.

In 2012, for the Boss 302 modification, the engine produced 450 hp (331 kW) with a torque of 520 Nm.

2013 Ford Mustang GT

In 2013, the Mustang is being refined again, the design becoming more aggressive from year to year. The most powerful Shelby GT500 package is complemented by a new 5.8 liter V8 unit with a supercharger, producing 671 hp. (494kW). Both Shelby and Boss are available exclusively with manual transmission. 20-inch aluminum wheels and LED lights are now available standard, and not an option, as it was before.

2014 - our time

The sixth generation of the pony car was introduced by Ford on December 5, 2013, and mass production began at the Ford Flat Rock Assembly plant on July 14, 2014. From previous models updated Mustang features primarily a fully independent rear suspension for all versions, as well as an optional four-cylinder 2.3-liter engine.

The most powerful Big Block, with a volume of 5.0 liters / 420 hp, a torque of 528 Nm, formed the basis for the most productive Mustang - the GT version. The standard engine is a V6 with 300 hp. A small four-cylinder 2.3 liter EcoBoost is presented for the European market, which, together with two turbines and a direct fuel injection system, has quite “adult” characteristics - 305 hp, torque 432 Nm, top speed 234 km/h and acceleration to 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds.

Already in the basic configuration, the BLIS® traffic stop control system is installed, scanning other road users and other obstacles at 360 degrees, the system contactless ignition with touch sensors on the doors, SYNC® - a media center with a touch screen that supports voice control, as well as electronic system ETCS traction control.

Ford Mustang Shelby– a racing modification that has become a cult Ford car Mustang, created in the studio of racing driver and talented engineer Carroll Shelby

Ford Mustang Shelby 1964-1970

Background of appearance

After graduation first Ford Mustang in 1964, this model began to be in truly feverish demand, but the company's goals were not only to sell the base version, but also to compete with other Muscle Cars.

Therefore, soon after the car entered the market (in April 1965), the presentation of the racing modification of the Mustang, the GT, took place. It was distinguished from the basic version by modified chassis and steering settings, dual exhaust, a special exhaust design, disc brakes on the front axle, bright body coloring and, naturally, more powerful engines.

Ford Mustang Shelby GT-350

In the same 1965, the famous studio of racing driver Carroll Shelby took up the matter. As a result, a modification of the Ford Mustang Shelby GT-350 enters the market, equipped with an 8-cylinder forced engine running on gasoline with a V-shaped cylinder arrangement. This made it possible to increase its power to 306 hp. pp., and such a powerful car was freely sold by Ford dealers - anyone could buy it. But besides it, a racing version of the Ford Mustang Shelby GT-350R was also released, the power of which was 54 hp higher. With. and reached 360 l. With.

1966 Ford Mustang Shelby GT-350

In 1966, another major modernization of the Shelby modification took place. The designers left the same 8-cylinder power unit under the hood of the car, but Paxton, a mechanical supercharger, was added to its design. It significantly increased engine output - up to 420-430 hp. s., however, such a peak was achievable in a fairly narrow speed range.

In addition, the 1966 Shelby modification was equipped with automatic transmission, and its body was painted in one of 4 available colors.

Ford Mustang Shelby GT-500 1967-1968

The appearance of this model became real thanks to the excited public, which demanded the most powerful and fast cars. By this time, the Ford Mustang had undergone a restyling, as a result of which it became longer, wider and more massive. A number of body panels were replaced - air splitters appeared, which were added by the designers to the decorative air intakes located next to rear wheels. In addition, the slope of the stern of the fastback has changed - from now on the roof and rear window lay in the same plane.

Naturally, Carroll Shelby could not miss such an opportunity, and soon his studio presented the world with the new Ford Mustang Shelby GT-500, equipped with a 7-liter engine with 8 cylinders that produced 335 hp. With. It is noteworthy that in order to install such a massive and large power unit on the Mustang, the engine compartment had to be slightly lengthened.

Photo: Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Cobra (1969)

At the beginning of 1968, the model was modernized, as a result of which the car began to be equipped with 427 engines, the power of which reached 390 hp. With. But already in April 1968, modifications of the Ford Mustang Shelby GT-350 and Ford Mustang Shelby GT-500 were officially renamed Ford Mustang Shelby Cobra. In addition, versions of the Ford Mustang Shelby Cobra began to be sold as a convertible.

They are being equipped with new, powerful power units - 428 Cobra Jet. They implemented the Ram Air principle (air intake technology), and also used valves of a special design (plates with a larger area than usual). Such measures made it possible to increase engine power to 350 hp. s., and experts noted that it is able to develop 410 hp. With.

It is also worth considering the fact that already in 1967, Carroll Shelby retired, refusing to participate in the development of new powerful versions of the Ford Mustang Shelby. He eventually sold his rights to produce the Ford Mustang Shelby to Ford Corporation.

Ford Mustang Shelby Cobra and Ford Mustang BOSS 1969-1970

During these years, Ford's rivalry with the Chevrolet Camaro turned to racing. So, in order to compete with the Camaro Z/28 at the next stage of the Trans AM racing, the BOSS 302 version was equipped with 429 engines developing a power of 290 hp. With.

But very soon Ford decides to take part in the prestigious NASCAR races, for which it is building a new Ford Mustang Boss 429, equipped with a V-shaped eight engine producing 375 hp. With. and 611 Nm of torque, and this peak was already available in the middle range - at 3,400 rpm. Naturally, such measures forced the model’s exterior to change. Thus, the Ford Mustang Boss 429 received more impressive, extended wheel arches, and an impressive air intake on the hood.

It is also worth noting other design features Ford Mustang Boss 429. A significant part of the power unit components were made from light alloys. Due to the presence of such a large and heavy engine, the front suspension had to be upgraded. This was manifested in the lowering of the double wishbones by 25 mm, as well as in the displacement of the shock absorber mounting points. The Ford Mustang Boss 429 also received a new radiator (oil type), a 4-speed transmission and a luxurious interior.

Except power units Shelby versions received an FMX (hydromechanical) transmission, which differed in that the gears in it could be changed either manually or automatically.

In 1970, the history of the Ford Mustang Shelby, as well as the BOSS 302 and BOSS 429 modifications, was interrupted for a long time - the resumption of Shelby production took place only in 2006. Of course, this does not mean that Ford did not produce powerful models all the time - they were versions of the Mach and Cobra.

Ford Mustang Shelby 2006 - modern...

Shelby GT-H and Shelby GT

2006, at this time there was a revival of Shelby modifications. At first they are sold simply as versions racing model GT – Shelby GT-H (in 2006 and 2007) and Shelby GT (in 2007 and 2008). The cars were equipped with an 8-cylinder 4.6 L SOHC “Modular” (3 valves per cylinder), developing 300 hp thanks to the VCT (variable valve timing) system. With. Shelby trims differ from the simple GT with various design elements and a slight increase in power.

Shelby GT500 and Shelby GT500KR

Already in May 2006, the Shelby GT500 entered the market, which is equipped with a 500-horsepower, 5.4-liter V8. It has sports seats upholstered in genuine leather and design elements that give the car a sporty style.

In 2006, there will also be a presentation of the Ford Shelby GT500KR, equipped with the same 5.4-liter V8, but with 540 hp. With. Almost the entire body (except for the roof) was also changed - the exterior became more dynamic and sporty.

Mustang Boss 302 and Shelby GT500

And in 2012, the Mustang Boss 302 hits the roads, equipped with an 8-cylinder Hi-Po 302 Ti-VCT producing 444 hp. With. In principle, this is the same Coyote 5.0, but deeply modernized - the weight of a number of components has been significantly reduced, and the valve lift height has been increased.

And back in 2012 it appeared a new version Shelby GT500, with a new 5.8-liter V8 and 662 hp. With. – so far this is a record figure for a V8. This Shelby GT500 accelerates to 320 km/h.

In 2013, the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 Cobra was created in memory of Carroll Shadby with a power of 850

The first generation Ford Mustang was first shown at the New York World's Fair on April 17, 1964 and made a great impression on spectators. The initial version of the car with a 2.8-liter engine (102 hp) accelerated only to 150 km/h. But the list of options included V8 engines with a power of up to 380 hp, an automatic transmission and a lot of other equipment. The first Ford Mustang was offered in three body styles: coupe, fastback and convertible. Over the years of production, it has lengthened from 4613 to 4923 mm.

The production of the first models continued until 1973. In total, almost three million first-generation cars saw the light of day. The "base" version was priced at $2,368 (roughly $18,500 these days).

2nd generation, 1973–1978

The second Ford Mustang, shortened to 4445 mm, developed on the basis of the compact one, was released in 1973. The cars were equipped with a 2.3 liter four (89 hp), a 2.8 V6 (106 hp) or a 4.9 liter V8 (131-141 hp). The car was offered in two versions: a two-door coupe or a three-door hatchback

Despite poor dynamics and poor handling, about 1.1 million cars were sold until 1978, with prices starting at $3,134.

3rd generation, 1978–1993

The third generation Ford Mustang lasted on the assembly line from 1978 to 1993. At this time, it was again lengthened to 4562 mm, and lighter materials were used for production. The previous engine range was supplemented by a 2.3-liter turbo-four (118 hp), and more powerful (up to 203 hp) engines with fuel injection began to appear under the hoods of Mustangs only in 1983.

The result of the restyling of the “third” Mustang in 1986 was the Mustang SVT, boosted to 238 hp. "eight" 4.9 liters. In just 15 years, 2.6 million third-generation cars were produced. The car was also sold on the American market under the name.

4th generation, 1993–2004

GM's plans to revive the model prompted Ford production to develop the Mustang fourth generation in 1993. New car was based on a reinforced old platform. The wheelbase increased slightly, the brakes became disc brakes in the “base”, and ABS was installed at an additional cost.

The “basic” version of the “fourth” Mustang was equipped with 3.8-liter V6 engines (147-193 hp), and the GT, Cobra and Mach I versions were equipped with 4.9 V8 engines (218-243 hp) and 4.6 liters (264-390 hp). From that time on, only models with coupe or convertible bodies began to go on sale. The starting price increased from $10,810 to $13,365 (about $22,000 today).

In 1998, during restyling, the exterior of the car was redesigned in the spirit of New Edge design, sound insulation was improved, and traction control system, and the top versions of Cobra received an independent rear suspension. Production of the fourth generation Mustang ended in 2004, by which time approximately 1.6 million vehicles had been produced.

5th generation, 2004–2014

The first copy of the fifth generation Ford Mustang was released in 2004. The new cars had a simplified suspension and interior; the cars were based on their own D2C platform.

The new Mustang was equipped with V6 4.0 (231 hp) and V8 4.6 liter (304-450 hp) engines combined with a five- and six-speed manual transmission or a five- and six-speed automatic transmission. “Charged” versions with V8s 5.4 and 5.8 produced up to 672 hp.

The cost of the “basic” model was $19,000 (about $24,000 today). In 2009, the car underwent a restyling, but this did not save it from declining sales.

6th generation, 2014

The sixth generation Ford Mustang sports car debuted on the American market in September 2014, and in 2015 the car officially began to be sold in Europe - for the first time in the history of the model. The Ford company has refused to sell Mustangs in Russia.

Coupes and convertibles are equipped with a 2.3 EcoBoost turbo engine (317 hp) or naturally aspirated engine V8 5.0 with a capacity of 421 hp. s., and the Ford Mustang is also equipped with a V6 3.7 engine that develops 300 horsepower. Cars are equipped with a six-speed manual or automatic transmission with the same number of steps. All versions have rear wheel drive.

In the American market, the Ford Mustang is offered at a price of 23.5 thousand dollars, in Western Europe the car costs from 35 thousand euros.
