Kochnev Eugene. Military cars allies

03.10.2020

1/4 Ton cars of elevated passability with wheel formula 4x4 were produced by Willys-Overland Motors Inc. plants And Ford Motor Company from 1941 to 1945 (American Bantam Car Company is not considered in this article due to its extraordinary rarity).

Jeeps converging from the Willys-Overland Motors Inc conveyor were designated as a model Willys Ma, Willys MB.

Jeeps converging from the Ford Motor Company conveyor were designated as a Ford GP model, Ford GPW.

Willys-Overland Motors Inc made about 370000 jeeps, and Ford Motor Company approximately 280,000 jeeps.

This article discusses the differences between Jeeps Willys MB (Willis MB) and Ford GPW (Ford GPV), as the most mass models that have been produced at the time. Accordingly, they constitute the main fleet of jeeps today.

At first glance, the Willys MB jeep and Ford GPW look like completely identical cars. Apparently, therefore, they were called them in the USSR with a common name - Willis. In fact, these jeeps differ significantly from each other in detail and manufacturing technology. For restoration, it is very important.

Currently, a certain amount of Willis and Fords obtained on the American Land Lisa remained on the space of the former USSR, during the Second World War. Probably, unfortunately, not one of them was not preserved to the present day in pristine. Most of the jeeps, over the past 60 years, have suffered a huge number of repairs, alterations, replacement of nodes and aggregates. With such repairs, spare parts from Fords, and home-made details or Soviet analogs were often used on the Fords from Willis. Therefore, in the modern form, the jeeps can commemorate the symbiosis of the frame, engine and body from Willis and Ford, not to mention the confusion in smaller details or simply in their absence.

When identifying a jeep, Willis Ford and the search for distinguishing features, it is necessary to deal with another complexity. Frequently absence of accurate information on the date of making one or other constructive changes. From 1941 to 1945 The jeeps were constantly upgraded, and their index changes were made. Willys-Overland Motors Inc. Deli Willis MB and Ford Motor Company - Ford GPV. It seems that we are dealing with only two types of jeeps and can be easily compared. In fact, everything is much more complicated, the types of jeeps 6! Modern researchers of this topic, the classification line is drawn up:

Willis MB Early, November 1941 - March 1942
Willis MB Standard, March 1942 - December 1943
Willis MB Composite, December 1943 - September 1945

Ford GPV Standard, April 1942 - December 1943
Ford GPV Transitional, December 1943 - January 1944
Ford GPV composite, January 1944 - June 1945

Types of bodyworks are taken as the basis of the classification Because the frames of all Willis MB are almost the same as in all Fords of the GPV.

To distinguish the frame of the VILLIS MB from Fhod GPV is quite simple. And this simplicity of identification may erroneously lead to the conclusion of the model of the entire jeep. However, it is necessary to understand and in the one of the 6 types of bodies standing on this frame! For example, the Ford GPV frame may be not only any of the three types of Ford's Body, but also any body from the Villeys line, as the result of repairs over the past decades.

Let's start with the frame. With the most visual and convenient differences.

The number of the frame at the Willis MB is empty on the Schilde which is rocked from the inside of the left side of the frame, immediately behind the front bumper. Weld options look at the table just below the text. Number format: MB123456. The placement of the shield is very unsuccessful in terms of safety. If you have a jelly, then in 99% of cases this place is bito-interrupted, booranially digestively, and from the shield and the trail has bothered. However, on some jeeps of the overhaul on the reminds of the Union and lost their native name with the number, this number can be found in the shock absorber mounting on the right forehead bracket (photo 3B).

The Ford GPV number was stamped right on the upper side of the left beam frame, immediately before the engine pillow or sometimes behind the bumper of the bumper (Fig. 1.) The number format: GPW123456.

Considering the differences in jeeps, Willis MB and Ford GPV will not be superfling about the engine. Both models of jeeps have completed the same engine and the same GO-DEVIL engine type L-134. Throwing out which engine was installed on the Willis MB, and what kind of Ford HPV can be in its number. The engine number is knocked down on an oval plate located on the block under the canister oil filter. For jilors format number MB123456 (photo 5a). For Fords - GPW123456 (photo 5B). If the engine knocks out the number in another format or it is not at all, then it is most likely a new engine installed after the repair of the jeep. Such engines were charged from the factory without license, and the rooms were already obtained at repair enterprises.

Before talking about the distinguishing features of the bodies, a little history. Body for jeeps were made on America Central Manufacturing Company (ACM). In 1941-1943, ACM I bodies were produced that went to the Willis MB of Early and Willis MB standard. At about the same time, Ford himself produced the body to Ford GPV standard. Since 1944, the production of the body has been unified and fulfilled entirely to ACM. The unified body received the ACM II index. ACM II Body is also called composite as it combines the features of ACM I and Ford's bodies.

One of the fundamental developments, which became the start of the development of the modern world of jeeps, one can boldly call American Willis. More precisely, the second generation of winding arm upgraded in 1941 Willys MB. This is a car that participated in the entire World War II and was in service with the Red Army throughout the entire battlefield. Despite the ambulance development, Willys MB showed itself very well on the tests and in battles than deserved legendary glory. Willis's way to the military tender in the United States was not so simple and honest, but the winners do not judge, and it makes the car honor.

Attractive photos and even numerous videos with preserved jerseys today can be observed in Russia. The legendary Willys Jeep today is still present on the roads of our country, but most of the copies are changed with modern tuning. Military endurance makes a jeep with default. Even at the Jeep Willys Museum, the Jeep Willys is a desire to get behind the wheel of this amazing American guilt and go to conquer the most complex tracks and mud captives of field roads.

Features and specifications of longtime Willys MB

Military requirements have become the basis of the reliability of Willys MB. This generation is the second, and the first with the name Ma also served in the arms of our army, but much worse. From the first batch it is difficult to find at least one preserved jeep. Willys MB cars have an outstanding technical characteristics for their time. They were able to conquer not only American testing grounds, but also to go through all the years of war, she served as commander cars and jeep-tractors for 45-millimeter guns. The main technical characteristics of the jeep viltis are as follows:

  • the car possessed a 60-strong low torque engine;
  • the functions of the SUV were implemented sufficiently modestly, but the design helped the passability;
  • in the photo of cars, Willis is perfectly visible a short wheelbase that increases efficiency;
  • large wheels with wide rubber contributed to a relatively comfortable trip by field bumps;
  • engine endurance hit - overcoming brodes and overheating for him is not terrible;
  • the suspension was not broken at all, the VILLIS car has proven itself as one of the most reliable jeeps.

Today, Willys MB can be found in fact only in Russia and the United States, since 50,000 cars produced fully were transferred to the Soviet army for weapons on Land Lesu. As you can see for yourself, Willys Jeep still can be bought on the secondary market. There are even car options that are preserved in the original performance. But such jerks are increasingly rare, because the jeep is incredibly old.

Nevertheless options - Civilian jeeps

After the war, Willys MB has turned into a fairly profitable project, the American company has released about a million models in various modifications. Today, if you wish to buy Willys Jeep in good condition, collectors are treated for European auctions. There are many reasons why should be purchased by this car, but it is already rare and expensive today. The jeep has the following interesting features:

  • civil models undergo technical inspection in any country and in modern standards;
  • the car sometimes turns out to be more productive than modern jeeps;
  • in the design, everything is so simple that its service can occur in the garage;
  • many motorists who faced the Willis want all jeeps to be made along the same system;
  • Willys Jeep has a large number of technical advantages, therefore remains valuable among raritet lovers.

It's hard to say that this car becomes too rare. The highest quality of production in the post-war years allows some instances of the Willis to live to today in fully working condition. Willys MB may well listen longer to modern SUVs.

Let's sum up

One of the milestones of the development of the modern sphere of machines with increased permeability is definitely Willys MB. The car, which was the story of not only the automotive industry, but also of our Patriotic War, was produced in America since 1941, and his some first copies and until today struck the world. True, it is becoming increasingly difficult to purchase such a car due to a constant increase in the price of it.

Today Willys Jeep is one of the most famous auto history cars and a common representative of that era of technological progress. But buy transport for normal operation is nonresonal. The machine should be awarded the honorable place in the garage of collectors.

Jeep "Willis" - a legend car, who passed the path from the Volga and to Berlin, crossed by the desert of Africa, who traveled through the Asian jungle. His concept still serves as the basis for creating modern SUVs. "Willis" became the founder of the class of cars, which today are called "Jeep".

Jeep "Willis": the history of creation

Another year, the American military department began to show increased interest in high-passable cars that could replace an existing outacious fleet of light army machines. The beginning of the war in Europe forced Americans to speed up this process. In this connection, a number of necessary technical requirements were developed for the future car, which should be implemented in reality.

The automakers perfectly understood that the receipt of such an order in the context of the established political situation was prompted by a good profit. Therefore, 135 companies entered the struggle for the tender for the production of SUVs announced by the American military department. But only three were able to reach the final stage: "American Baths", Ford Motor Company and Willis Overland, which could create real prototypes that satisfy the demands of the military. As a result, each of these companies received an order for the release of 1500 pieces of its SUVs.

Determining choice

When it became clear that the Americans would not be able to stay away from the war, in July 1941 it was decided to release another, already a large batch of SUVs consisting of 16,000 cars. But again the question of choice between three producers.

At first, the scales bowed toward the "Ford" as the largest automaker in the world. But then the issue of the cost of the car. It turned out that the SUV proposed by Ford is more expensive than all - its production accounted for $ 788. A little cheaper cost "bans" - 782 dollars. The lowest price was offered "Willis Overland", which estimated the cost of one of its car at 738.74 dollars, and this despite the fact that the Willis Military Jeep had better characteristics than SUVs of competitors.

It seems that the conclusion was obvious, but the military doubted that the company would be able to put in the specified temporary framework, as it was not very good. The point in this matter was put by Bil Nutson - an American expert in the field of mass production of cars, who supported the candidacy "Willis Overland".

On July 23, 1941, a contract for the release of 16,000 cars was signed with Willis Overland. And in August, the jeep "Willis" (photo below) after a series of improvements was fully prepared for a serial release, and to its name - Willys added the MV index.

Government Safety

Concern "Willis Overland", standing on the verge of bankruptcy, could not master the serial order of the military, so the government of the country decided to progress and issue an additional check for the production of SUVs-copies of a more reliable company - Ford Motor.

The owner of the company agreed to a major state order, despite the fact that Ford was supposed to be used in the production of its machines original engines purchased from Willis Overland. A copy of the documentation on Willys MB was transferred to the Ford engineers, and in early 1942 the concern released the first twins of the SUV, called Ford GPW.

During the war years, "Willis Overland" produced about 363,000 SUVs. Ford Motor fulfilled military order at 280,000 cars. Almost immediately after the start of serial release of jeeps, the car was sent to allies - first to the British, and then the Soviet side.

Military SUV transmission

On the road, despite the four-wheel drive, Jeep "Willis" behaved very well. Accelerated quickly, rode well, smoothly overcome off-road. Such behavior provided successfully "tailored" transmission of an SUV.

The bearing element of the "Willis" was a spar frame associated with springs and additional shock absorbers of one-sided effect with bridges equipped with blocking differentials. The engine of the machine is closed with a mechanical 3-speed gearbox.

Control of the front axle and reduced transmission was carried out by means of a dispensing box.

Jeep "Willis" had a large plus in the form of hydraulic brakes of all 4 wheels, which, in its parameters and dynamic characteristics, was an important aspect.

Body car

Because of the compactness, the comfort of the American SUV, of course, leaves much to be desired, but in those days it did not have to think about the comforts, in the first place was the parameters of functionality.

In simple, the body of "Willisa" has its own design features in the form of the lack of doors and the windshield folding on the hood. The lack of doors allowed free to leave the car in case of danger. To protect against precipitation, a waterproof awning was provided.

From the outdoor side of the body in the rear, the "spare" and canister was located, and on the sides - marching tool (shovel, ax, and so on). In order to military target car, the fuel tank was installed under the driver's seat, which it was necessary to learn to refuel the car. In the niche behind the rear wheel arches there were cavities for storing tools.

Since the body had a boxed design, then to remove the possible accumulation of moisture in the bottom of the machine, a hole closed with a plug was provided.

Optics features

The headlights of "Willis" are somewhat deepened relative to the plane of the radiator grille. This is due to their constructive features. If necessary, light optics could be rotated with the diffusers down, so that they could be used as a light source when maintaining the engine at night. In addition, such a feature of the headlamp design allowed to move in the dark without free.

Jeep "Willis": car characteristics

Drive on 4 wheels.

The mass of the SUV is 1055 kg.

Tent height - 1830 mm.

Car width - 1585 mm.

Dzhip length - 3335 mm.

Road clearance (clearance) - 220 mm.

With 4 cylinders, nipple (Willys L-134) with a capacity of 60 l / s.

The volume of the power unit - 2.2l.

Carburator type power system (carburetor - WO-539-S from Carter).

Jeep "Willis" is able to develop a speed of 105 km / h, in the case of towing 45-mm guns - 86 km / h.

The capacity of the gas tank is 56.8 liters.

Gasoline consumption (averaged value) - 12 l / 100 km.

Capacity - 4 people.

The SUV "WILLIS" was able to overcome a semi-meter former without prior preparation. With special equipment of 1.5 meters.

From the above technical data it is seen that the Jeep "Willis" had a very compact and lightweight design, and also had very good dynamic characteristics for its time.

In the Soviet Army, "Willisa" appeared since the summer of 1942. Many of the cars supplied to the Soviet Union came in the form of machine-sets, which in the working state were already given on domestic automobile plants.

Unfortunately, the specifics of the service in the Soviet Army imposed its negative imprint on the performance of "Willis". Machines refuel low-grade gasoline, which was mortal to "Americans". It was often not observed oil replacement. Many breakdowns occurred due to the lack of timely service and lubrication of the parts of the SUV. All this together led to the fact that Willis was out of order after 15,000 km of run. Nevertheless, it is believed that in the Soviet Army, American SUVs were assessed higher than the domestic analogues of GAZ-67 and GAZ-67B, which the Red Army people called "Ivan-Willis".

His military career mini jeep "Willis" continued on his homeland (where various modifications were produced at its base), which finally ended only in the 80s, when he had a more responsive time to "Hammer".

Without exaggeration, it can be argued that the most legendary car of World War II was American passenger all-terrain vehicle "Willis". This machine was used at all, without exception, theaters of hostilities and earned endless respect and the love of the soldiers of all the army of the anti-Hitler coalition.

It all started on June 19, 1940, when the US military formulates the requirements for a light commander-intelligence vehicle. Its designs were engaged in constructors of three companies at once: "Amerikhen Baths", "Ford Motor Co." and a small company "Willis Overland" from Toledo (Ohio).

Appearance on light

Under the terms of the contract, the overall layout of the new car with its main characteristics was necessary to provide after 5 days, and the prototypes are made in 49 days.

ONLY "BATS" was met in the designated deadlines. The first sample of Willis Overland entered the tests only on November 11, 1940. This car was named "Willis Quad" (Quad - Four). His appearance felt the influence of the prototype of the company "Baths", which can rightly be considered the first jeep, who traveled the road to this direction in the automotive industry. Despite the fact that both cars were harder than planned, they liked the military. In November 1940, "Pigmey" is the prototype of Ford.

Preliminary tests of all three models held in November - December 1940 showed the obvious advantages of the "Willis" on dynamics, passability, reliability and strength. This was facilitated by the use of well-worked and more powerful than competitors, engine model "441", the right selection of aggregates and transmission elements, chassis, size chassis and body parameters.

In early 1941, VILLIS company significantly redesigned its version of the all-terrain vehicle. The army multi-purpose all-wheel drive car "Willis" was already a basic serial model released in 1941 by a small part of 1500 copies. The car had a 4 × 4 wheeled formula, an open all-metal body with tarpaulin trend and sidewalls instead of the door, a four-cylinder engine with a working volume of 2199 m3, one-piece dry clutch, a three-step transmission, two-stage demultipator, hypoid main transmission, suspension on longitudinal semi-elliptical springs with hydraulic shock absorbers and Hydraulic brakes. In addition to the multipurpose option, it was assumed to issue in sanitary execution and as an anti-aircraft installation T54 with a paired 12.7-mm machine gun.

Meanwhile, the situation in the world forced the US military to give an indication to urgently deploy mass production of new cars. The company "VILLIS", by releasing by that time the modernized version of the "Willis" MB, which had several enhanced dimensions and mass, even more strengthened its leadership. Externally from the Ma model, it was distinguished by the headlights transferred from the wings in the facing of the radiator, and the body parts. Since mid-1942, all MB jeeps have gained their classic appearance, having received a stamped radiator grille. However, the production capacity of the company was not enough to meet the needs of the army, so the Ford Motor company connected to the production of the car. The Ford variant GPW was different from the "Willis" MB form and the location of a number of secondary body parts. Just July 1945, Ford produced 277,896 GPW cars, and Willis - 361 349 cars. Until the end of World War II, both firms released 659,031 cars.

"Willis" in the ranks

Willis cars began to enter allied troops since 1942 and quickly won incredible popularity. These cars could serve as artillery tractors, mobile command items, carry a radio station and communication officers, to be sanitary transport and a completely powerful combat vehicle armed with several machine guns. He passed where there was not a single car before him, and pull out the car from almost any dirt using special handrails on the body, it was possible to make the crew's efforts. The Germans had nothing like that that caused the envy of the soldiers quite well a motorized Wehrmacht. The Italian command, for example, promised 2 thousand lire for the capture of "Willis", while the tank is twice as smaller.

In the Red Army "Willis" came from the summer of 1942. They immediately found wide application primarily as commander's cars and tractors of 45-mm anti-tank guns in the USSR "Willis" most often arrived in the semi-discharge state in the boxes. Their assembly was mainly done by one of the plants in Kolomna. Just until the end of the war, the Soviet Union put 50 501 cars. The advantages of the VILLIC car included high speed of movement and good pickup, small dimensions that provided a light masking, and good maneuverability, thanks to the small radius of rotation and satisfactory passability. The use of the VILLIS car in combat conditions has shown that as a commander and intelligence car, he fully responded to its destination, but for work as an artillery tractor did not approach insufficient power.

Willys MB (Willis) - American Army Car of Increased Passage of the Second World War. Serial production began in 1941 at Willys-Overland Motors and Ford plants (under the Ford GPW brand).

History

In May 1940, the US Army formulated the basic requirements for an easy commander intelligence. These requirements were so harsh in terms of the competition that only Willys-Overland Motors and American Bantam took part in the competition, which in early September 1940 showed the first prototype of its SUV.

The resulting machine was heavier than the specified values. Willys, announcing these technical requirements and the deadlines for their implementation unreal, asked for the implementation of his project a more heavy car 75 days. Willys, having complete information about the competitor's car, copied the appearance of the Bantam prototype appearance. A few years later it was recorded legally, but by that time American Bantam ceased to exist. With a delay in the competition, Ford was included with the "Pigmey" car, which won the initial stage of the competition. In early 1941, the Commission, chaired by President Roosevelt, has formed final requirements and decided to issue each of the three firms to an order for a trial batch of 1500 cars. The release of Willys Ma began in June 1941. US Introduction to the Second World War Wanted by the United States Military Office to give an indication to urgently deploy mass production of new cars.

Contrary to the hopes of Ford, on July 1, 1941, the modernized Willys MB was adopted. Willys-Overland Motors released the last car Willys Ma on November 18, 1941, built with a violation of the timing of 1500 pcs, and began the serial production of the Willys MB model at the factory in Tolido, Ohio. The Ford plant began to release Willys MB (under the Ford GPW index) only at the beginning of 1942. Taking into account Ford copies, 659 031 Willys MB car was released.

Enrolling in the allied troops, Willys quickly gained enormous popularity. In the Red Army, "Willis" was massively accepted by Land Lases since the summer of 1942 (along with Willys MB in the USSR, almost the entire Willys Ma batch was put through England - 1553 copies.) And immediately found an application as commander cars and tractors 45 mm Anti-tank guns. In total, about 52 thousand cars were delivered to the end of the war in the USSR. From May 20 to July 10, 1943, three cars Willys MB were tested under a cube and showed themselves very well.

"Civilian Jeep"

In 1944, a civil SUV was developed on the basis of "Willys MB" CJ1A. (CJ. - Civilian Jeep), and in 1945 its improved modification CJ2A.. Model CJ3A. Served the base for the creation in 1950 by the Army SUV M38. Military series "Willys MD" served as the basis for civilian SUVs CJ5/CJ6Mental from the mid-1950s before the early 1980s, as well as later models of the end of the 70s and 1980s CJ7, CJ8.Scrambler I. CJ10The production of which was completed in 1986. Under license Willys Models CJ3B. and CJ5/CJ6 Since the early 1950s, they began to produce in Japan (Toyota, Nissan and Mitsubishi), as well as in India (Mahindra & Mahindra), South Korea (SsangYong and Kia) and a number of other countries.
