Land rover discovery 1 reviews. New comment

29.10.2020

MK-Mobile, 02/05.

Last year, Land Rover unveiled the all-new Discovery, but we'll now talk about the more affordable first generation of this car, produced from 1989 to 1998. Initially, Discovery was conceived as a cross between an overly utilitarian Defender, which in its comfort can only be compared with our "UAZ", and a luxurious Range rover... Despite the fact that Discovery opened a new market niche for Land Rover, there was nothing fundamentally new about this car. But he has a big advantage over his fellows - it is a relatively reasonable price, which was combined with a good level of comfort. Yes, and the Discovery's cross-country ability was at the level - here it inherited all the best from the Defender. Including the driver's landing - the seat is specially brought as close as possible to the door in order to better feel the dimensions of the car (this helps a lot in the city, allowing you to squeeze into the gaps between cars, leaving gaps in millimeters).

As for the competition with similar SUVs from other companies, then Discovery had, perhaps, trump card... This is the name of the manufacturer. In the late 1980s, the Land Rover brand was already heavily promoted, and many motorists believed that the company produced the best off-road vehicles in the world. And here we must immediately warn you - it is not worth buying a used Land Rover Discovery just because of the glorious halo of the off-road conqueror. By the way, it is not necessary to take this car because of its low price. Otherwise, you can seriously disappoint both in Discovery itself and in all Land Rover cars.

Rust is white!

The vast majority of first-generation Land Rover Discovery have a familiar 5-door body. However, the British also made 3-door cars, which, however, were not in great demand (as a result, after 1998, they were discontinued). The Discovery is based on a powerful frame that is rightfully considered to be eternal. The body of the car is not aluminum at all, as you can often hear. It is made of steel, and only the hood, front and rear fenders, as well as external door linings (the doors themselves are iron) are made of "winged" metal. It is generally accepted that the use of aluminum completely removes the problem of natural destruction of the body. But the owners of Land Rover Discovery can only grin skeptically after reading these words. They know very well that the body iron of their cars, in some places where aluminum touches ordinary steel (this is just about the doors), begins to actively oxidize. In this case, the metal is covered with a kind of white scale, and then begins to crumble altogether - sometimes you can even bend a piece of the outer door trim with your hands. That is why when buying a first generation Discovery, you must first inspect the front door (where it contacts the metal part), all the edges of other doors and other "dangerous" places. And in the future, if signs of oxidation appear, you should not pull the rubber and contact a service where there are special putties and primers.

Aluminum also has one more drawback, which manifests itself only in case of accidents. The fact is that aluminum requires a more painstaking restoration of dented elements, and often straightening is completely impossible. And then you have to look for hardware on "disassembly" or buy new parts. The price of the latter, as you know, is considerable. For example, a wing costs about $ 290 (for non-original). But if you need to replace a new bumper ($ 320), you can act more tricky and buy very strong steel tuning bumpers in stores specializing in SUVs, which cost from $ 900 to $ 1.5 thousand. Moreover, often such bumpers already have space for installing a winch and additional optics, as well as kengurin.

Land Rover Discovery's equipment is usually quite rich. Although the three-door versions of the first years of production were absolutely "empty". SUVs with five doors in mandatory have the power accessories necessary for a comfortable ride. The richest equipment, which appeared after the 1994 restyling, is called ES. In terms of their "bells and whistles", such Discovery can even compete with Range Rover (the interior is trimmed with leather and wood, there is a powerful music system, climate control etc.). By the way, in the early years of the car's production, there was no air conditioner in the basic equipment, but after the modernization it appeared on all Discovery. There is not as much space inside Discovery as it might seem at first glance. Despite the impressive dimensions, you will not particularly roam in the cabin. Although to call it close, even the haters of the British car industry will not turn their tongue.

The build quality of the Land Rover interior can be called good, but on cars that are already 10 years old or more, all kinds of squeaks are normal. Also on old machines the electrician sometimes starts to "glitch". This is mainly due to poor contacts, but this does not make it easier for the owner - such little things are usually very annoying. So if, when buying a car, it is noticed that some kind of lamp or brake light does not work, then perhaps you still have to suffer with an electrician. The driver's power window on the first generation Discovery may also stop working at this time. The reason for this usually lies in the sheared gears in the drive or (occasionally) in the very electronic unit... In the latter case, purchase new part will cost $ 160 (at disassembly they can sometimes be found for $ 50-70). Owners of Land Rover Discovery made before 1995 complain about a poorly functioning "stove", which at first barely starts to blow even at high speed, and then completely stops performing its duties. The electric motor is to blame for this, but it is necessary to change the entire stove assembly. And this is $ 500 for the part, plus another $ 250-300 for the work (for this you have to remove all the dashboards). However, you can save a lot on the motor by placing a part from our G8 for $ 10 (you will have to cut out a tiny piece of plastic from the car, although this is not always the case).

And I want and inject

In the overwhelming majority of cases, Land Rover Discovery has either a 3.5 liter gasoline G8. or 3.9 liters, or a 2.5-liter turbodiesel. However, not everyone knows that under the hood of the Discovery they also installed a 4-cylinder gasoline engine with a volume of 2.0 liters, which produced 136 hp. Perhaps the only advantage of such machines is that their "customs clearance" is cheaper. As the experience of operating such SUVs shows, the resource of the 2.0-liter unit is the lowest compared to the rest of the engines, and it also clearly has little traction reserve.

If you really want to save on fuel, then it is better to look for a much more reliable diesel engine, which in city driving requires 100 km. paths about 10-13 liters. diesel fuel. Despite the fact that the volume of a diesel engine was always 2.5 liters, until 1994 such Discovery had the designation 200Tdi, and then they began to be called 300Tdi. At first, the diesel engine produced 107 hp, but since 1995, thanks to the new power system, it has already produced 113 hp. (sometimes 111 hp is indicated). It is clear that diesel Discovery does not shine dynamic characteristics(acceleration from 0-100 km / h takes endless 18.5 seconds), but this motor is loved for its reliability, unpretentiousness and excellent traction at the bottom. For off-road driving, the latter factor is of paramount importance. Naturally, when buying a Discovery 200Tdi or 300Tdi, you need to carefully check the operation of the turbine and inspect it from all sides (it is better to entrust this to a master specializing in diesel engines). After all, if the turbine is dying, then buying a used one will cost decent money - about $ 400 (for a new one they ask from $ 800).

In addition, the driver of the vehicle should be aware that a Land Rover diesel engine requires only high quality Supplies(it is better to take only original filters). Sometimes diesel engines overheat, which can ultimately lead to a rather sad end - in such cases, a cylinder head is usually replaced (repairs in total cost $ 1,700). It must be said right away that if you doubt the reliability of the power unit, it is better to refuse to buy a car, because overhaul here costs a lot of money (for example, a new crankshaft pulls $ 900).

But still more often in the secondary market there are Discovery with gasoline engine V8. The first years of production, the "eight" had a volume of 3.5 liters, and the power system consisted of two carburetors (152 hp), but from September 1993, Discovery began to be equipped with a 3.9-liter injection motor(182 hp). These horses are already enough for a confident ride not only on mud, but also in the city. Moreover, the drivers of such cars especially appreciate not even the ability to accelerate over 150 km / h without any problems, but that traction reserve in the entire speed range that only a large-volume engine can give. It is not recommended to set speed records on Discovery. This is a classic SUV that is simply not built for skidding corners. rear axle... And often such freaks end with a car overturn.

A V8 gasoline engine, regardless of size, is considered to be quite reliable. But there are enough complaints about it, so you need to approach the check of the power unit with special care. According to the experts, sometimes the gasoline G8 requires serious repairs even after the mileage is about 100 thousand km. Usually, it is necessary to eliminate the camshaft play that appears, which, together with the repair kit and work, costs about $ 500-900 (after that, however, the camshaft is no longer a hassle).

Car radiators also require great attention (on some cars there are already four of them), since on our roads they quickly become clogged with dirt and fluff, which significantly impairs their performance. Oil and filters, of course, must be changed strictly according to the instructions, and on our roads it is desirable a little earlier than the prescribed time. By the way, during the installation of a new petrol filter, buying one filter ($ 20), as a rule, does not manage to get rid of. Experience shows that it is best to immediately have a gas filter repair kit ($ 65), since the old one, for sure, cannot be unscrewed. But still, the main disadvantage of the V8 gasoline engine is called its very high fuel consumption. Of course, a lot depends on the driver, but practice shows that with more or less active driving in a city for every 100 km. leaves about 18-25 liters. So when buying a used Discovery V8, you need to carefully calculate whether there is enough money for its maintenance, because in addition to fuel costs, the owner will periodically have to carry out some minor repair / maintenance work on the power unit and its attachments... For example, often in spare parts stores they ask fuel pump, which in non-original version costs $ 155.

Take care of your balls

If the car is used most of the time in the city, then it is better to choose a 4-speed "automatic" made by the well-known German company ZF as a gearbox. Although it requires a little more maintenance costs, it is more reliable. Except that sometimes on rolled copies that have traveled a lot off-road, there is a wear of the splined connection between the "razdatka" and the box itself. In this case, it is often necessary not only to disassemble the mechanisms, but also to change the intermediate shaft of the "automatic machine" and the gear wheel of the input shaft at the "transfer case". In general, this repair costs quite decently ($ 500). By the way, it can also happen with the "mechanics" (in this case, the secondary shaft of the gearbox must be replaced ($ 900 - 1400).

There are two types of manual boxes. The first is designated LT77 (such a checkpoint was installed until 1995). It is considered more reliable, but the later R380 with synchronized reverse gear there may be problems. Already after 70-100 thousand km. mileage may fail synchronizers (usually the first thing to stop turning on the reverse and fifth gear). In this case, repairs will require more than $ 500. Determining what type of "mechanics" is installed is quite simple - if the rear turns on to the right and down, then it means R380, and if left and up - LT77. By the way, we must immediately warn that it is very difficult to find cheap used boxes on the market. The average price for "live" used "mechanics" is $ 1-1.2 thousand (with a guarantee).

The big plus of Land Rover Discovery is that it is equipped with a permanent all-wheel drive system, which does not need to be switched on when driving off-road. In addition, there is a center differential and a reduction gear, but the interwheel in standard trim levels, Unfortunately no. The transfer case does not demonstrate miracles of reliability - it often leaks, and the car owner must constantly monitor the oil level (if you drive without it for at least a short time, then you will have to buy a new transfer case). If the transfer case oil seals are flowing very actively, then new ones can be installed - it will cost about $ 300. They are able to throw unpleasant surprises and other elements of the all-wheel drive system: the gearbox, center differential, cardan cross-pieces, etc. may fail.

It has been said many times that the Discovery was originally designed as an SUV. Therefore, it does not have complex independent suspensions that can improve ride and handling. Instead, there are rigid axles-beams in front and behind, which provide excellent cross-country ability and high reliability. However, the suspension and steering of the car still requires periodic financial infusions. And considerable ones. For example, the first generation Discovery's weak points are the large front swivel balls, which over time become scratched and gouged. This often leads to accelerated wear anther, and dirt and moisture begins to get inside the ball. It is worth a little ride on such a car, as not only the balls themselves, but also the CV joint, wheel bearing, etc. will go for replacement. And this will require about $ 500-900 for each wheel! The cost of replacing one ball with spare parts is about $ 250. By the way, one must also remember that oil must be periodically poured into the balls (until 1995 it was a conventional transmission oil, and then a special lubricant appeared).

The second place worth paying attention to is the power steering gearbox. It runs on many different Land Rover models made in the 80s - first half of the 90s. I must say that if some service promises to repair the gearbox without disassembling it, then it is better to leave there as soon as possible, since the oil seals replaced there will leak, most likely, very quickly. So it is rather difficult to say how much it will cost to repair a gearbox on the fly, but usually you need to prepare for costs in the amount of $ 300-600. There seems to be no more serious chronic illness in the Discovery chassis. But there are small ones. So, periodically there is a backlash in the bearings of the front hubs, but it is relatively inexpensive - $ 55 with work. After a run of 100 thousand km. shock absorbers often wear out ($ 75 for original with work). But the failure ABS sensors you can still equate it with serious costs - an unoriginal part costs $ 180 (over time, the wiring of the sensors breaks off).

A first-generation used Land Rover Discovery can be costly to operate. Despite its glorious name, Discovery has a number of weak points... And car repairs usually cost decently. However, there are quite a few people who are willing to put up with the downsides of Discovery. They are attracted not only by the SUV brand, shrouded in legends, but also by the fact that all over the world Land Rover cars are considered cars for drivers who know their worth and are able to resist all kinds of fleeting fashion trends. That is why Land Rover Discovery is often called a true English gentleman.

Excursion

In 1947, the development of the first Land Rover SUV began in England, which was supposed to be an assistant for local farmers in their hard work. The new car was made quickly enough and at the end of April 1948 the debut of the first Land Rover took place at the Amsterdam Motor Show. By the way, the cost of an SUV in the late 40s was 450 pounds sterling in the UK, which was not so much for a car.

Initially, Land Rover SUVs (later the first model of the company was named Defender) was an extremely utilitarian means of transportation. However, later it became clear that many people need not only to drive through the mud, but to do it with comfort. And in 1970 the Range Rover was shown. And in 1989, another model appeared, which took an intermediate position between Defender and Range Rover. It was Land Rover Discovery.

At first, Land Rover Discovery had only a 3-door body, but then 5-door cars appeared. The car was equipped with 3.5-liter V8 petrol engines and a 2.5-liter diesel engine.

In 1991, the first minor restyling of the model took place. A little later in 1994, Discovery underwent another modernization (such cars can be distinguished by a different dashboard). In the same 1994, instead of a 3.5 liter engine. under the hood of the car began to install a 3.9-liter gasoline engine By the way, it is worth noting that in the period from 1992 to 1995 years Land The Rover Discovery was sold in Japan. And it was called there Honda Crossroad.

In 1998, the second generation Land Rover Discovery was shown. Outwardly, the first and second Discovery are very similar to each other. However, the car made after 1998 got rid of many of the shortcomings that were inherent in the first generation. It is also worth noting that electronics began to dominate in the all-wheel drive system, although it subsequently received a lot of complaints. Land Rover Discovery II was equipped with a 3.9-liter V8 petrol engine (185 hp), as well as a 2.5-liter 5-cylinder diesel engine (137 hp).

In 2002, the second generation Discovery was seriously redesigned. According to representatives of the British company, hundreds of changes were made to the design, although the appearance of the car remained almost the same.

And in 2004, a fundamentally new Land Rover Discovery was born, which has nothing in common with its predecessors. The new SUV began to install a 4.4 liter V8 gasoline engine from Jaguar. (295 hp) and a 4.0-liter V6 unit (215 hp). There is also a 2.7-liter V6 diesel. The latter motor, by the way, was developed jointly by Ford and PSA specialists (recall that since 2000, Land Rover came under the control of Ford).

The Discovery Series 1 was discontinued nearly 20 years ago. However, many cars are still in service. Our company maintains a large stock of spare parts for these veterans and also offers Discovery 1 off-road training equipment.

Short story.

SUV Discovery I in 1989 became the third model of the company Land rover... By that time, the English automaker was already producing a utilitarian Defender and prestigious Range rover... The new SUV was supposed to take the middle place between the two models. Company Land rover very well chosen the moment to start production Discovery I because at that time the buyer wanted a comfortable and reliable SUV for relatively little money. The new SUV was the perfect option for them.

"Traveler" was produced in two body options - five- and three-door. The latter, however, has not received much distribution, so it is very rare on the roads. At the heart of Discovery I there is a powerful frame on which the body is attached. The suspension of all wheels is spring, made according to the traditional off-road scheme. Brake system the SUV was very efficient and modern due to the use of disc brakes.

Discovery I was equipped with several gasoline and one diesel engines. Initially, the SUV was fitted with a 3.5-liter and 3.9-liter V8 gasoline engine. The latter had just a monstrous appetite, 20-25 liters per 100 km. Discovery I had in its arsenal engines and simpler, for example, a 2.0-liter gasoline engine (136 hp) and a 2.5-liter turbodiesel with a capacity of 107 hp. All power units worked in tandem with a five-speed mechanical box or a four-stage "automatic".

Externally and by interior design Discovery I was more like Range rover... And in terms of equipment, the "traveler" was not much inferior to the flagship SUV of the British company. Even then in basic configuration included full power accessories. And the most expensive version Discovery I included air conditioning, CD-player, leather interior, front seats with electric drives and many other "chips" that at that time were available only in the most expensive cars.

Now let's talk about the problems that may arise during operation. Discovery I... We have already said that this SUV was quite richly equipped with various electric drives and other such things. Therefore, before buying a used Discovery I everything should be thoroughly checked for operability, otherwise repairing a failed electric drive will cost you a pretty penny. The air conditioner also often fails, so you should also pay attention to it.

The body of an SUV is less susceptible to corrosion, since it is made of aluminum. But, of course, over time, rust still appears, you can't get away from it. Her most "favorite" places are the bottom of all doors, including the tailgate, as well as the front part of the roof, located above the windshield.

Now about the suspension. The back of it is quite reliable, and does not require special attention for a long time. But with excessively "active" exploitation Discovery I certain problems can be caused by the axle gearbox and the axle shaft. The front end of the suspension is not as reliable as we would like it to be. The fact is that the breakdown of one of its elements can lead to the failure of other mechanisms, that is, a kind of chain reaction occurs. Therefore, when buying Discovery I especially look at the condition of the front suspension.

As for the engines, they are all quite reliable and have a solid margin of safety. True, this is true only if the motors were serviced in a timely manner, they were monitored and correctly operated. In particular, in gasoline engines, it is necessary to monitor the condition of the radiators and clean them from dirt and dust in time. In "diesel engines" it is better to use high-quality oil and also monitor the condition of filters and fuel sedimentation tanks.

As we can see Discovery I is a pretty nice, comfortable, safe, and most importantly, reliable SUV. He, like all other cars, requires timely maintenance and attention to his person. If you follow the simple rules of its operation, then Discovery I will be able to please its owner for a long time.

I, like most Russians, first saw this car on a TV screen in 1990. Then three events happened at once: for the first time the route of the most famous in the history of automobile adventure Camel Trophy was laid in Siberia, for the first time our compatriots took part in the Camel Trophy and for the first time the Land Rover Discovery that had just appeared became the official Camel Trophy. Since then, for many people, including me, this four-wheel drive car has remained the carrier of an elusive substance called "the spirit of adventure."

Milestones in history

BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO ELECTROCHEMISTRY

The first thing that catches your eye when we talk about the operational features of this car is the low corrosion resistance of the body. This is aggravated by the fact that many owners sincerely believed that since aluminum does not rust, then anti-corrosion treatment of cars should not be dealt with. In fact, only the body panels are made of "winged metal", fixed on a stamped steel frame. Places where aluminum is rolled onto steel cannot but suffer from electrochemical corrosion. It is necessary to change the corroded parts entirely or rivet sheets of aluminum corrugated board on the affected places. There are no other options to defeat this disease. In any case, the bodies of "urban" cars that have been in operation in Russia since the mid-90s are usually in a deplorable state, and those who have spent their life on the periphery and did not know what a "salty winter" is, with the safety of the body fine.

DRIVING FORCE

So, under the hoods of Discovery can stand petrol V8s of 3.5 and 3.9 liters or turbocharged diesels TDI 200 and TDI300. Gasoline engines do not deliver any particular troubles to their owners. They are extremely reliable, but, to be honest, very gluttonous. With age, they begin to slowly drive oil from wherever they can. As a result, the picture looks like this: the engine is sweating with oil, and the owner refills it little by little and drives, drives, drives ...

The diesel of the 200 series, which stood until the 95th year, is an unpretentious workhorse. The only problem is that the interior of cars equipped with this engine is cool. But you can fight this phenomenon. The temperature of a running diesel engine cannot drop below 60 degrees. Set the fan to minimum and direct the flow only to the legs and to the windshield, then enough warm air will flow into the cabin. As for the TDI 300 diesel, it has only one disease: if you miss the moment of changing the timing belt, then the belt breaks (however, without catastrophic consequences). And when buying a diesel Land Rover Discovery release of 95th year and younger, it is imperative to change the roller-tensioner of a single long belt and the belt itself. It will cost you $ 250, but it will save you a lot of trouble. By the way, the TDI 200 had three belts, two of which are interchangeable. This made it possible in a critical situation to rearrange the belts and still get to civilization. It costs $ 150 to replace all three belts. And the owners are really happy with the fact that Land Rover diesels have very few problems with winter starting and bad diesel fuel.

AN OLD PROBLEM

So much has been said and written about the problem of leaks in the steering gear of Land Rover cars, which has become the talk of the town, that I don't even want to discuss it. But you have to. The fact is that sorting out the gearbox and changing the oil seals is a rather stupid event. A special mandrel is required to replace the PTFE rings. And neither official dealers, nor, even more so, for unofficial ones (without a mandrel, when inserted, fluoroplastic rings are tightly sealed). In general, after six months, the reducer starts to leak again, although you spent $ 350. A radical solution to the issue is to replace the gearbox ($ 1090).

SUSPENSION, TRANSMISSION, UNDERWAY

The LT77 transmission initially did not perform well. She often had the second gear out of order (repairs - $ 583, spare parts - $ 300) and broke the splined joint of the shaft entering the RK. At one time, Land Rover held a campaign to replace the 77th box with the 380th for only $ 1000, and many people took advantage of this opportunity. With the R380, almost all problems have been removed. True, sometimes when starting from a place (especially for cars with a gasoline engine) input shaft, but this was simply due to the inability to move smoothly. Losers will have to fork out $ 617.

The first Discovery also had a lot of questions about the driveshaft crosspieces. Due to the fact that the center differential lock could be engaged at any speed, increased clearances were provided in all gearboxes, which became the reason for the famous "knock-knock" when starting off. Land Rover's time menu has never had such an operation as "replacing the crosspiece", but there was a "propeller shaft bulkhead". Two crosses were changed at once, and if necessary, then part of the universal joint or the entire shaft assembly. But with us it is always like this: "we will change this, and the second is still similar." And now one crosspiece changes, and the remaining one immediately begins to break a new one ... Now the crosspieces cost $ 25-30 (and non-original parts are $ 18), the cardan shaft itself is $ 180, and complete renovation$ 400-500. And yet it is worth taking a closer look at the experience of the British, who, for all their stinginess, never change one crosspiece, one ball joint, one shock absorber and one spring. By the way, the latter are supplied only as a set, because the right and left springs have different heights!

As for bridges, almost all old cars have balls steering knuckles corroded, covered with shells and needs to be replaced ($ 130 + $ 35 labor). In this case, you will have to change the hub bearings ($ 20). The CV joints run for a very long time, and they fail when the CV joints forget to regularly change the lubricant.

FEATURES OF NATIONAL OPERATION

When the first Discovery began to appear in Russia, the most common malfunctions were bent steering rods and dead shock absorbers. The fact is that in the LR instructions it is written unambiguously - moved off the asphalt - turned on the lowered one. And if you race off-road, the shock absorbers quickly overheat, which leads to failure of the rubber seals of the bypass valves. Replacing the original shock absorbers costs $ 380-390 with work. With proper operation, shock absorbers and silent blocks go 120 thousand each, a ball joint A-arm- 150 thousand, and the clutch disc 200!

Roughly the same thing happened when the 95th model year Discovery appeared in Russia. They instantly started having problems with the anti-roll bar struts. And again, this problem is peculiar only to Russia, because on these, already more "road" cars, they tried to drive off-road with good speed. And because of this, not only the stabilizer struts fly ($ 550 for a set with work), but also the steering tips ($ 317), as well as all the same shock absorbers. It is worth noting that the elements of the chassis with right side(sand and other abrasives are flying at it from the side of the road).

ELECTRICITY THING IS SIMPLE

In 1995, electronics appeared on Land Rover Discovery ... and problems immediately began with it, primarily with ABS. And now we will again have to return to the national characteristics of exploitation. As soon as you start driving off-road in high gear, the hub bearings become loose. Adjusting them is a rather expensive operation, but if you neglect it, it starts knocking out the ABS sensors. And one sensor costs about $ 400, plus $ 100 for work. And then, again, it is required to adjust the bearings of all four wheels. And one more thing: there are two sensors at the back, but there is only one connector. Accordingly, if a malfunction is detected rear sensor, you need to change it two times, and this is already $ 800. Electronics until 98 was generally not very reliable.

EXPERIENCE TIPS

When buying a car for 5-10 thousand dollars, you need to be ready to immediately bring in a certain amount of green papers to mechanics and spare parts sellers. For Land Rover, the “rule of a thousand” quickly becomes the “rule of thumb”. All fluids must be changed immediately after purchase. You should also pay attention to ball seals, steering gear leaks, transmission backlash, oil leaks from the gearbox and transfer case. Be sure to find out when the timing belt changed. If you can't figure it out, it's better to spend $ 350 (with work) and change the belt prophylactically. To protect yourself from a headache with a suspension, it is better to immediately change the silent blocks of all the levers and rods of the Panhardt, anti-roll bar struts, check and adjust the hub bearings and the steering gear, check and, possibly, change the steering tips, change the ball joint of the rear axle ( $ 109) and A-arm silent blocks. A set of silent blocks for the whole car will cost you $ 150, and the whole operation with work - $ 434. Hub bearings cost $ 20-25, steering tips $ 25. You may have to deal with the repair of the propeller shaft. In general, now a lot is being released for Discovery. non-original spare parts, and here you need to look at quality, not price. But if you do all this complex of work, the machine will thank you with many years of flawless service, and routine maintenance will not seem at all burdensome. Judge for yourself: front brake pads cost $ 35, rear - $ 25, fuel filter$ 15, (for gasoline engine) and $ 20 for diesel, air - $ 20, oil - $ 25. Transmission shoe kit parking brake will cost you about $ 60.

In conclusion, I would like to say that Discovery, like no other car, is adapted for long-distance travel. The only drawback is the relatively small trunk volume. But if necessary, 7 people can be seated in the car. As for the left-sided pedal assembly, you will be surprised how quickly you get used to it.

Start-up capital.

The Discovery is designed to leverage the design elements of the Range Rover. The windshield, engine shield, doorways, frame were borrowed unchanged. For example, you can take a frame from one model and put it on another. Even the fasteners all remained in the same places. The aggregate base has also completely changed: axles, gearbox and transfer case... The suspension has lost anti-roll bars, and the only addition was launched in the 89th year diesel engine TDI 200.

Indiana Jones Secrets.

Discovery, which participated in the Camel Trophy, were absolutely standard vehicles trained in SVO - Special Vehicles.

The cars received a snorkel, power kit, steering rod protection, reinforced front and rear tow hooks, reinforced 24-spline axle shafts, Superwinch Huskie winch, expeditionary trunk with additional headlights and a set of navigation equipment (terratrip and GPS navigator).

It is impossible to understand what Discovery is on the road. On a bad road, too. There he is no better than a Pajero, Land Cruiser or Cherokee. You begin to understand something when you drive off the asphalt and drive through the forest, across the field ... You drive, and the car smoothly steps over every bump. The British believe that if you move at least a little faster than a pedestrian is walking, then this is bad manners. The famous second reduced, "command drive position" comes into play, and now you move slowly and solidly. Once I put Paul Lloyd, chief marshal of the Camel Trophy and head of the Land Rover test group, next to me, and showed how they drive off-road in Russia - an increased row and a slipper on the floor. And Paul shouted in horror that no guarantee in Russia could be given for springs, shock absorbers, transmissions. And you can't ride like that. In English cars, you need to drive the way the British drive, that is, I saw the dirt - I got out, walked, mapped out the trajectory for the right and left wheels, put the little flags, turned on the second lowered one and drove neatly. If you act in this way, then Discovery will take you out of almost any situation. Remember how the Camel Trophy participants were trained and how much fun they ran in the mud. Well, the fact that Discovery is a good car can be seen by driving up to any Land Rover service and seeing what its employees drive. At the same time, Land Rover is the most expensive car in the world. It always has something to spend money on. You constantly want to improve it, and there are all the possibilities for this. Only Jeep Wrangler can compete with Discovery in the number of offered accessories and tuning components. And if you have already purchased absolutely everything, you can buy a special bag for dirty boots.

I work for Major Auto and naturally I drive a corporate car. But of all the car brands Major sells, I chose Land Rover. First of all, because I accept Land Rover's motto, which says that the company does not sell cars, but a lifestyle. This style, free, open, freedom-loving, suits me very much. It resonates with my biography, with the state of my spirit. I love freedom and the ability to move not on the given roads, but to choose directions myself, to strive and achieve. I have had this Discovery of the first series since the beginning of May this year, but it seems to me that I have had it for a long time. Discovery is a deliberate choice. For me, it's like my first love, when I sat down and immediately realized that this is mine. I wanted a car with all-wheel drive, so that I could go on vacation, to the countryside, and to drive around the city to work, without thinking that some particularly zealous young people could create an emergency and just offend. This car is not young, 1990. But she had a very good chassis, the previous owner followed her. I did not touch the motor at all, only changed the filters and bought rubber. In the summer, I took it on vacation near Samara and back, it is 2500 kilometers, and the car never failed. Plans to replace windshield and tidy up the salon, previous owner there the dog lived. It will either have to be dragged out or replaced altogether. And you will have to look for a special bag for which there is space on the console. Many people complain that the offset pedal assembly makes it inconvenient to squeeze out the clutch and there is no place for the left leg to rest. And for me, because of my small stature, it is just very convenient. The leg just stands on the floor and does not get tired. As for rolls, sometimes adrenaline turns are added to the blood. But just a trip to Samara gave a lot in terms of understanding how far you can go. The box was adjusted for me at the service, and now the gears are switched very clearly. And it's also nice that, having bought a car, you become a member of a friendly club, and they gave me a lot of trips to nature with other admirers of the brand. Land Rover is considered by many to be expensive to maintain and maintain. I do not think so. So far, I have only had one breakdown - by my own stupidity, I twisted the steering damper. It's just that Discovery is the kind of car that you want to improve all the time. I think that my next car will also be a Land Rover, and perhaps it will be Discovery again.

Land Rover Discovery I is not sold in an authorized Land Rover dealer.

Land Rover Discovery I Owner Reviews

Land Rover Discovery I, 1994

I bought a Land Rover Discovery I in a bad condition, restored it, now I console my soul. 2.5-liter turbodiesel gives the car not only confident, "tractor" sound, but also quite decent acceleration dynamics for a car of this class. The reserves of traction during the operation were never used "to the full" - it was just that there was no such case. With the included "lowering" and blocking confidently rushes in azimuth on any surface. On 40 cm deep snow virgin soil goes in high gear and without blockages, with a good speed, only a column of snow dust. Anything smaller than a tree trunk while driving can be ignored. For a long time I unlearned how to brake on speed bumps - on Land Rover Discovery I this is a completely pointless exercise. On high-profile rubber "sunbeds" the car "swallows" at a speed of 80 with a slight jolt and a weak plopping sound. After installing 235/85 p16 tires, the consumption jumped slightly, and amounted to 8.5 diesel fuel in the combined cycle in the summer. In winter - plus a liter. If you "polish" - plus a liter.

The interior of the Land Rover Discovery I, especially in contrast to the mid-size sedans, is enormous. Headroom (I already hardly ride in a taxi - the ceiling is "pressing") 20 centimeters, a hefty rear sofa, trunk volume with folded rear seats- 2 cubes. You can take a dozen bags of cement, for example, just by hopping on the road to the building market. Neither their volume nor weight will practically affect the behavior of the machine and the comfort of movement. Visibility and maneuverability are excellent. It took me a long time to get used to the dimensions, this is my first SUV, but when I got used to it, the "millimeter" in the parking lots is "worse" than on the "small cars" - fortunately, the glazing area and the landing shifted to the left make it possible to view almost 360 degrees of what is happening outside, and, if necessary - comfortably, with shoulders together, lean out of the window. The appearance of Land Rover Discovery I is a separate "song". Now this is no longer done.

Dignity : patency. Luxurious, reliable turbodiesel. Roomy high salon. Permanent four-wheel drive. Appearance.

disadvantages : hard to find and expensive to buy original spare parts. The undercarriage requires a detailed, in comparison with a passenger car, regulations (extrusion, lubrication).

Land Rover Discovery I, 1993

What can I say about Land Rover Discovery I, only positive and warm words. The view, of course, of a chopped off chisel, or maybe they forgot to process it with a file, but driving performance amazed everyone. I climbed wherever possible and impossible. The eyes were afraid, but the car was driving. There were, of course, cases when they sat down tightly, they had to get out through the hatch. But after installing the winch, this problem was solved by itself. As for the service - there is a stick on both ends, the car can withstand a lot and for a long time, but still breaks down, and the spare parts are not cheap. The car has never failed. Looking and analyzing Land Rover Discovery I, I bought for my personal needs "Disco-2", a restyled model of 2003, with a slightly more powerful diesel engine, in short the same "Disco-1", only a little more elegant. Departure for a year, happy, so far no problems, only planned replacements.

Dignity : profitability. Passability.

disadvantages : obsolete.

Land Rover Discovery I, 1995

I bought the car in 2002 with 84 thousand km mileage, year of manufacture - 1995, equipment - 2.5 TD with a gun. I have traveled 80 thousand for today on different roads, starting from the "ironed-out" asphalt, ending with the track from K-700. Honestly, I really like Land Rover Discovery I, despite the quiet engine, although from the start I “make” domestic “VAZs”. An SUV must be a hard worker who can carry a ton of cargo, get into a swamp and drive a girl around the city and along a country road without shame. The car has a very comfortable fit, despite the height of 186 and weight of 105 kg, a lot of pockets, etc. When buying was road rubber, on which I tried to go hunting, the idea, of course, was crazy, but the car did not disappoint. Compared my diesel with petrol equipment, off-road better than diesel no, although the petrol model is much more dynamic on the track.

During Land exploitation Rover Discovery I had no serious breakdowns. At 30 degree frost the car always started the first time. Recently I changed the nozzles in the nozzles and glow plugs, went through the "handout" that was "killed" with the wrong oil by the "specialists" at the local service, but otherwise the car required proper timely maintenance (oil, filters, crosses, pads, etc.) ... I was looking to buy Disco-2, but there are too many electronics that no one repairs in Ryazan. I travel a lot on the highway, but the speed of 110-120 km / h is enough for me, there is no point in flying anymore, because the buildup characteristic of all bridge SUVs begins to appear. Otherwise, Land Rover Discovery I does not behave badly on the road, the suspension “swallows” holes and bumps well, and it is quite soft. Overall it is good, quality car, I don’t know how to whom, but I really like it.

The first Land Rover Discovery was released in 1989 during the Frankfurt Auto Show and immediately became one of the bestsellers, taking in lineup the British automaker has a free niche between Land Rover 90/110 and Range Rover. Initially, Land Rover Discovery 1 was positioned as an “affordable” family SUV, but participation in the famous “Camel Trophy” endowed the novelty with the glory of a full-fledged conqueror of any off-road, from which the developers later pushed off, releasing new generations of Discovery.

Land Rover Discovery 1 had a rather conservative exterior even by the standards of its time, which is why journalists called the SUV "a farmer in a tailcoat", hinting that such a simple appearance was quite unexpected for a Land Rover car. Initially, Discovery went on sale in an unsuccessful three-door design, but already in 1990 the five-door Discovery 1 saw the light, which made up the bulk of the new product's sales.

In terms of size, the first generation of Discovery fits into the frame midsize SUVs: body length is 4521 mm, wheelbase is 2540 mm, width is 1793 mm, and height is limited to 1928 mm. The ground clearance height is 214 mm.

The Land Rover Discovery 1 salon did not have a rich interior. It was decorated quite simply, utilitarian and only after 1994 acquired its usual attributes. good car: leather interior, air conditioner, natural wood inserts, etc. At the same time, the comfort level of the interior of the first Discovery always remained at a fairly high level, and the build quality has never been a problem.

Specifications. The line of motors for the first generation of Discovery was quite extensive, but the motors presented in it were not always available at the same time, but replaced each other as the SUV was modernized.
Initially, Land Rover Discovery 1 received a time-tested 8-cylinder gasoline unit with a working volume of 3.5 liters, developing 152 hp. power, but its gluttony was quickly considered unacceptable for a "family" car and a 2.5-liter diesel turbo unit appeared in the lineup, which initially produced 107 hp. power, and after modernization in 1994 - 113 hp.
Subsequently, the line of motors was replenished with two more gasoline power plants: 2.0-liter engine with 136 hp output and a 3.9-liter flagship with 182 hp.
As for the gearboxes, initially all engines were equipped with only a 5-speed "mechanics", and after the 1994 update, a 4-band "automatic" was added to it.

Land Rover Discovery 1 is built on a frame chassis and continuous axles with dependent spring suspensions at the front and rear.
Disc wheels were used on all wheels. brakes, which at the end of the 80s of the last century became a real revolution in this class of cars.
Discovery 1 was produced only in an all-wheel drive version with a 2-speed transfer case and center differential with mechanical interlock.
Note that for the sake of cross-country ability, the SUV was initially deprived of lateral stabilizers, which significantly worsened the behavior of Discovery I on asphalt, but already in 1994, stabilizers took their rightful place in the suspension design, which, coupled with other innovations (replacement of axles, the emergence of ABS, etc.) immediately improved the ride and handling of the SUV by public roads.

The first generation Land Rover Discovery existed until 1998, inscribed its name in the history of the global automotive industry in gold letters. It is noteworthy, but even now on the roads you can find quite functional copies of Discovery 1, which speaks of the high quality of the legendary SUV.
