UAZ 69 specifications. UAZ "Kozel": description of the SUV

23.11.2019

GAZ-69- This is one of the first Soviet off-road vehicles, which was produced from 1952 to 1972, and initially it was at the Moscow plant. Molotov. The same team worked on the creation of this model, which was engaged in the creation, namely: V.I. Podolsky, B.N.Pankratov, F.A.Lependin, G.K.Schneider, S.G. Zislin, V.F Filyukov, V. S. Soloviev. The head of the whole process was G.M. Wasserman.

In fact, the history of this car began immediately after the war, in 1946, when the Gorky plant received an order to develop a worthy replacement for the GAZ-67B. It should have been the same four-wheel drive a car, but with an improved engine, higher cross-country ability, more modern design and comfort. By the way, in the decree of the Council of Ministers of the USSR it was also clearly stated that it was an army tractor that was needed to transport various goods, machine guns, ammunition and other things, with a total weight of up to 800 kg. Also, modifications without a trailer, which would be used for reconnaissance or movement of commanders, should also enter production. Despite the fact that almost all cars had some kind of basis for development or a prototype, the GAZ-69 was developed from scratch, only starting from personal experience the use of American jeeps "" and "Bantam" during the Second World War.

In the middle of autumn 1947, auto designers presented the first prototype of the E-1, which was produced in three more copies over the next year. These cars were called "Worker", which directly meant not only their military purpose, but also economic.

Very often you can find the name as well as the UAZ-69. It happened because a few years after the launch of mass production at the Gorky plant, this model was officially transferred to production at the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant and, accordingly, the name of the car was changed.

With the release of the first prototypes of the GAZ-69 (1948), it was immediately decided to put them into a serious test. The length of the route was 12.5 thousand km, and the well-known engineer A. Romachev was in charge of the whole process. At that time, the car had a very good characteristics- this is a high traction indicator (almost 70% of the total weight) with minimal speed damage, high ascent and descent angles (34 and 30 degrees) and good permeability through large layers of mud. As a result, the car has successfully passed the specified path. A year later, the car was put into a tougher test, where the route consisted of complete off-road, on which the worst conditions were deliberately created. While the famous ZIS-151 got stuck in mud or snowdrifts, the GAZ-69 confidently overcame any difficulties. Neither 40 cm of snow, nor 30 cm of mud, nor ditches, about 55 cm deep, did not interfere with it. At the beginning of 1950, the GAZ-69 passed another test, but this time for the safety of transportation in the air by military aircraft and gliders. In the same year, the fifth prototype was released, which was allowed to enter the landfill. And only in the middle of 1951, all tests were completed, and the cars entered full check... As it turned out, all specimens retained their operability, their units remained intact, no serious breakdowns occurred, and the wear of parts was at a very low level. This completely satisfied the State Commission and the car received the green light for production.

Production shop for the assembly of GAZ-69

The first major batch was released in 1953. Cars immediately began to be produced in two modifications - the army GAZ-69 and the agricultural GAZ-69A. The first 20 copies were immediately sent to Kazakhstan, where large export chains were soon established.

GAZ-69 had an open 8-seater, which had a folding awning. It had two doors, was designed for eight passengers and had three rows of benches. While the GAZ-69A was more comfortable, as it was intended for the personal use of officials. He had a 4-door 5-seater body, which was additionally equipped with a trunk. Instead of benches, the designers have equipped this car with soft seats.

Main dimensions

Since 1954, both cars were simultaneously produced at the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant, which during the war period was widely engaged in the production of trucks. But already in 1956, the Gorky plant stopped the production of GAZ-69, giving all its powers to UAZ.

It is also interesting that more than half of the various parts of this car were taken from other, earlier GAZ models. For example, the designers borrowed the entire engine system, including brakes, ignition and stove, from, and the handbrake, control devices and - at the GAZ-51. The new SUV got the drive axles and tires from the GAZ-67B. But the features of the new model include: rear axle with non-blocking type interwheel differential; in which there was no direct transmission; dependent leaf spring suspension of wheels, ball joints of speeds and two pairs of hydraulic shock absorbers of double action. By the way, during the production period, certain structures of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Soviet Union gave individual orders for the revision of the car, or rather, in order to install a full-fledged metal roof instead of a folding awning.

Since 1970, the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant began production of the modernized GAZ under the article 69-68. He had bridges from the military truck UAZ-452, which they had previously produced. Also, some modifications of the new GAZ were equipped with rocket launchers, which were used to launch anti-tank missiles.

For all 20 years, more than 600,000 copies rolled off the assembly line and about half of these cars were exported to many countries of the world. At the end of the 50s, the designers of UAZ gave the Romanian auto industry the right to mass produce the GAZ-69, officially transferring the necessary technical documentation to them. And already starting from 1962, such a right was granted to North Korea.

GAZ-69 engine system

It was taken from an older GAZ-20 car, namely a 4-cylinder carburetor. But since new car intended for more complex tasks, the designers have slightly improved it, making it more powerful, economical and wear-resistant.

Car engine on the left

Based on sources, the previous GAZ-67B SUV consumed a lot of fuel, especially with a trailer or while driving off-road. IN difficult conditions this figure reached 0.4 l / ton-kilometer. While the new GAZ-69 in similar conditions consumed no more than 0.288 liters. Building on the old model, the designers also realized that the new car needed more power, so the decision was made to install a six-blade fan and oil cooler to keep the engine from overheating. The cylinder block was interchangeable with the engine block itself. As for the cylinders, they were cast iron and had an in-line vertical arrangement. In order to make them more durable, they were dressed cast iron sleeves, 5 cm long and 2 mm thick. As practice has shown, it was thanks to the liners that the cylinders served 2-3 times longer. had water channels with cast iron valves (separate for each cylinder). This greatly improved the movement of the combustible mixture.

Car engine on the right

Two pairs of bearings were located at the bottom of the cylinder block, each of which was securely fastened with two bolts. On the other hand, the clutch housing is attached to the block. The common cylinder head is made of aluminum alloy and is attached with 23 pins and washers. Between it and the cylinder block, a special 1.5 cm thick was laid. By the way, over time, asbestos could adhere to the head and the block, so the gasket from time to time had to be rubbed with a special graphite powder.

Also in the GAZ-69 there were 2 oil filter- this is a coarse filter (a set of special metal discs with slots and a sump) and (designed to drain waste oil into the crankcase). By the way, the air purifier itself was of the inertial oil type, and the clutch consisted of one disc. Three-stage mechanical box gear was two-way. The second and third gears had a synchronizer. The main gear of the car was single and had a spiral tooth. The only difference between the current gearbox and the GAZ-M-20 gearbox is its location. Now it was located not near the steering wheel, but on the floor, to the right of the driver. In addition, due to the fact that the front axle hubs could be disabled, fuel consumption was slightly reduced. But, unfortunately, this only happened on perfectly flat roads.

If you look under the hood of the GAZ-69, then on the left side you can see a pre-starting type heating boiler. To warm up the car in severe frosts, it was first necessary to turn the steering wheel to right side and using the hatch in the left front wheel, install the included blowtorch into it. Thus, the oil in the crankcase was heated.

As mentioned above, it was open and had, with which it was pulled manually. It was mounted on special rigid frames. By the way, the top of the doors had tarpaulin covers, which could be removed at any time. The window frame could be lifted, so in the hot season it made the trip more comfortable. The hood had wide side panels that were also easily removable, which made it easier for the engine to work when high temperatures... The salon was designed for 8 passengers: the driver and one passenger sat in front, then 2 rows of benches with 3 seats each. In fact, these benches served as boxes, since the seats were raised and various tools could be stored inside. The tailgate of the car was hinged, and the space inside was used to store the cable, emergency signs and other accessories. There was a fine filter on the gas pump, and a coarse filter on the frame.

Car interior - view from the driver's seat

In addition to the main fuel tank, a second, the same tank with ventilation was hidden under the front passenger seat. Yes, it was only possible to refuel it through the salon. Another nuance was that the devices showed the driver only the amount of gasoline in the main tank. Gasoline in the additional tank was checked through the filler neck. The stove in the cabin worked only while driving and supplied hot air under the feet of the driver and all passengers. A standing car could not be heated in any way.

Car interior - rear view

The agricultural modification of the GAZ-69A had a number of differences. First of all, it affected the body and interior, the seats in which were reduced from eight to five. In addition to the driver's and front passenger's seats, only one bench was installed in the back. Also, the car was equipped with a roomy trunk, which could be climbed even from the passenger compartment, and had only one fuel tank. In general, the appearance of both cars was inherent in those times and had some similarities with the famous American jeeps.

Modernization and basic modifications of the GAZ-69

A few months later, after the start of production of the GAZ-69, they began to be used in military parades, and in the spring of next year - in agricultural work. In 1954, a lot of cars were used to service the polar stations. By the way, it was this step that motivated the designers of the Gorky plant to invent as many as 4 types of snowmobiles with tracks instead of wheels, taking this "worker" as a basis. But even in spite of its wild popularity and seemingly impeccability, the car was often refitted and something new was introduced. So in 1960, the front axle was modernized, equipping it with reinforced bearings, pivot assemblies and denser cardan shafts.

Modification of the GAZ-69-68 1970 release

The car underwent the most serious changes in 1968. Then the differential already had 4 satellites and became much more reliable, and also - the designers improved brake system by equipping them with stiffer drums. New discs were installed on the front wheels, the headlights and shock absorber struts were slightly changed, a power switch was added, the rear window was enlarged, and finally, the designers installed new tents, and additional windows on the passenger-and-freight modification. The modernization plan was fully completed in 1970 and the car received an index of 69-68.

GAZ-46 MAV - Amphibious vehicle

During the entire production, along with the modernization of the GAZ-69 itself, many other military units were created on its basis, in particular, the 2K15 Bumblebee (missile system), GAZ-96rh (a vehicle for radiation-technical reconnaissance), a prototype GAZ -19, GAZ-46 (floating vehicle), GAZ-011 (amphibious vehicle), R-125 "Alphabet" (command vehicle for commanders), etc.

GAZ-69 snow and swamp vehicle

Also, the GAZ-69 had a lot of modifications, which were widely used throughout the Soviet Union and were produced in fairly large batches. These include:

  • GAZ-69 - 8-seater 2-door SUV with an open body
  • GAZ-69A - 5-seater 4-door agricultural SUV with a trunk
  • GAZ-69-68 - a modernized 8-seater 2-door SUV with a drop-side

Toy model GAZ-69 "Baby"

  • This car became one of the main "heroes" of the film "Letters from Iwo Jima" (2006), where it was in the role of a Japanese SUV of the Second World War. The plot of the picture takes place on the island of Io.
  • Italian travelers at the end of the 20th century made an extreme 2-year journey across the vastness of forgotten Africa in a GAZ-69 and UAZ-452 car.
  • During the production period of the GAZ-69, there was still no reusable cooling liquid on the Soviet market, so drivers were forced to use water, and in winter they had to drain it daily at night.
  • The people liked to call this car "goat".
  • Especially for the pioneer camp Artek, the designers produced "Baby", which was a fire engine pump for youth fire brigades.
  • The Chinese firm "Bronco Models" produced prefabricated toys-constructors of the GAZ-69, GAZ-69A and 2P26 models at a scale of 1:35.
  • GAZ-69 and GAZ-69A have been used in computer games such as Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Vietnam and Soldiers of Anarchy.

Most roads in the Soviet Union, especially those outside the city limits, always left much to be desired. This was especially acutely felt in the post-war years, when the state needed to restore agriculture and infrastructure. The country needed cars that could easily move over rough terrain and off-road conditions. Therefore, in 1946, Grigory Moiseevich Wasserman, who was the lead designer at the Gorky Automobile Plant, began working on a new SUV.

The birth of the "worker"

The first model of the machine, which the workers of the plant called the "worker", left the official assembly line in 1947. In 1948, 3 more cars were assembled at the plant. At that time, the speed of the car's appearance, from the project to the first prototypes, was considered simply phenomenal. But there was an explanation for that. The fact is that ready-made units and mechanisms were used in its design, which were successfully used on mass-produced machines.

For example, the engine, the volume of which was 2.1 liters, went to the "sixty-ninth" from the famous GAZ-M-20 ("Victory"). It was slightly modified, as a result of which the power increased to 55 liters. from.

The transmission of the new SUV was also borrowed from Pobeda.

A novelty in the car was the emergence of a device that provides prestarting heating. The salon was equipped with a heater, and for windshield warm air blowing was provided. All these innovations made it possible to operate the GAZ-69 at any time of the year and in any weather.

The appearance of the GAZ-69A

The first tests under the supervision of a state commission took place in September 1951. In the same year, the first sample of the GAZ-69A was assembled, which had noticeable differences from the usual "sixty-ninth". First of all, they concerned the body of the car.

The GAZ-69 had two doors. There were two seats in front. Three benches were installed at the back for the transport of six people. Such an ascetic arrangement of the body was explained by the fact that this car was intended primarily for the army. Therefore, convenience was sacrificed for practicality.

GAZ-69A had a broader purpose, it was planned to use it for the needs of the national economy. Therefore, two more were added to the existing doors, and the wooden benches were replaced by a soft sofa, on which three people could fit. In addition to the fact that the GAZ-69A body received new elements, the changes also affected fuel system... In "sixty-nine" there were two fuel tank with different volumes: one 47, the other 28 liters. In GAZ-69A, they were replaced by one 60-liter tank.

Permeability is the trump card

However, the added conveniences did not make the GAZ-69A a comfortable city car. He was still a tough, no-nonsense hard worker. Its cross-country ability and unpretentiousness could become the standard for any SUVs in the world of that time.

It was the impeccable cross-country ability of the "sixty-ninth" family that became their hallmark... Short wheelbase, light weight, system all-wheel drive, excellent ground clearance under the bridges of the car made it possible for the SUV not to be afraid of difficult road obstacles.

Such qualities of the car, as well as its low cost, provided the car with demand not only in the USSR, but also abroad. About 50 foreign countries purchased a Soviet SUV for their own needs.

SUV equipment

Despite the fact that the interior of the GAZ-69A car was considered quite spacious, it was not very convenient to get into it because of the narrow doors.

You will not find comfortable excesses in the cabin either. Everything is only the most necessary.

The front panel of the GAZ-69A (photo above) contained a minimum of devices:

  • speedometer;
  • an indicator informing the driver about the amount of fuel remaining in the tank;
  • ammeter showing the battery charge level.

A heating system for the winter and a sun visor for the summer period are all the amenities offered by the manufacturer for comfortable operation.

The trunk lid was hinged. If it was in the open position, it lengthened the floor. luggage compartment and made it possible to transport oversized cargo.

The leatherette-covered chairs were soft, but slippery, and it was problematic to sit on them on an uneven road. GAZ-69A had a spring suspension design, which is why the car bounced on bumps, and with it all those who were in the cabin. Actually, for such jumping ability the car was nicknamed "goat".

Cleaning the windshield from external contamination was performed by which it was installed on top of the glass.

To protect the interior of the car from bad weather, a cover was provided, which was an awning made of dense waterproof material (tarpaulin). The GAZ-69A awning was stretched over the body metal frame and, with the help of loops "soldered" into the edges of the cover (eyelets), was firmly fixed at the base.

Transmission

On the GAZ-69A, the power unit and two bridges were fixed to the frame structure. The frame had a rectangular closed shape with six transverse reinforcements.

Both axles of the car were leading. was not provided in the design.

As mentioned above, the engine on the SUV was installed from the Pobeda car and was marked GAZ-20. Its volume was a little over two liters and a capacity of 55 liters. from. The four-cylinder unit was powered by low-octane gasoline (A-66).

The manual gearbox installed on the GAZ-69A had three shift stages for moving forward and one for reverse.

The power steering was not provided in the design of the car, and, in fact, there was no particular need for it, the steering wheel turned even on standing car effortlessly.

Specifications

Had the following:

  • the overall dimensions of the car (taking into account the tarpaulin awning) were 3 m 85 cm x 1 m 75 cm x 1 m 92 cm (length, width, height, respectively);
  • inter-wheel track - 1 m 44 cm;
  • distance from the roadbed to the bridge - 21 cm;
  • declared fuel consumption - 14 liters per 100 km, real expense varies from 16 to 20 liters, depending on the load;
  • the maximum possible speed is 90 km / h;
  • the weight of the car without equipment is 1415 kg, 1535 kg is the weight of the equipped car.

The contribution of modern craftsmen to the design of the car

Despite the fact that the GAZ-69A last rolled off the assembly line back in 1973, it still falls on Russian roads... True, it is still difficult to see him in the form in which he left the factory gates. The desire of lovers of rare cars to add modern notes to their appearance is very great. Tuning GAZ-69A is not limited only to changes in the appearance of the car. Changes it chassis and even the engine.

SUV chassis improvements

Since the GAZ-69A is an SUV, the owners of this rare car are primarily trying to improve its already good cross-country ability.

For this, the car is lifted. Moreover, it is performed not only on the body, when it is raised above the frame using special spacers, but also on the suspension, when the clearance of the SUV increases.

Body lifting is done with one goal in mind - to make it possible to install larger wheels on the GAZ-69A.

To give the "goat" a more attractive look, and at the same time to improve its qualities, power bumpers of increased strength are installed on it. The design of the car is complemented by a winch, the presence of which sometimes helps out on impassable roads.

Nozzle exhaust pipe installed above the level of the car body. The thresholds of the car are being improved. The standard tires are replaced with spectacular mud tires. Chrome wheels are installed.

Engine tuning

All of the above improvements to the car require an increase in its power, so the owners are trying to replace the GAZ-69A engine with more modern units. And not only are they installed under the hood domestic models, such as 406 ("Volga") or UAZ UMZ 417 or But and engines of German manufacturers "BMW" - M10 or M40.

Tuning any car is an expensive business, and tuning an SUV, especially a rare one, will result in a lump sum to its owner. It is often possible to purchase another car with the money spent only on disks. But if you do not pay attention to the financial side, tuning makes the car not only beautiful and unique, forcing passers-by to turn around, but also more reliable in operation.

... And today we will talk about our SUVs, which feel very great on our off-road.

Moreover, the car in question is a legend - GAZ-69. Where did she not go? The photo of the GAZ-69 shows that this car is not just a legend, but also a serious SUV.

During the period of production of GAZ-69 and GAZ-69A, which lasted about 2 decades, more than 600,000 copies were produced. GAZ-69 was exported to 56 countries of the world in various climatic modifications (GAZ-69M and GAZ-69AM). In addition, in 1957, technical documentation for mass production was transferred to Romania, and in 1962 to North Korea.

GAZ-69 and GAZ-69A cars are still found today, some even in good condition... Cars are often completed for participation in cross-country races and other off-road competitions.

In general, this device can travel everywhere and even today - in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and even in Africa and in the East, wherever off-road conditions flourish and there are long distances, as well as experienced mechanics and any gasoline.

The photo of the GAZ-69 shows that the design is very simple - this is the trick. The design is so simple that this car can be repaired in almost every garage. Everything is simple: a frame, two bridges, springs, a tenacious motor, a downshift on a "razdatka" - that's why the GAZ-69 can drive on impassable terrain. Most of the parts have been tested on other cars produced at the Gorky Automobile Plant, so the GAZ-69 is tenacious like no other, not even so tenacious.

The photo of GAZ-69 shows tarpaulin and steel

The USSR Ministry of Defense acted as the customer for this car, so the GAZ-69 body was produced only in the field version - with a canvas roof. Two versions were produced: the four-door GAZ-69 A, also called the "commander's" and the two-door GAZ-69, it is considered a cargo-passenger with front seats and two rear benches.

To protect the body metal from below from corrosion, a layer of bitumen mastic was applied to it. For the top, there was a primer and paint in two colors: sandy yellow and khaki. Typically, the body will corrode from the edges of the fenders, side members and the front of the floor. But you can find well-preserved copies if you want, because these cars did not drive along the streets of cities sprinkled with salt.

Of course, body parts are not sold in stores, but they can be found through the sites of fans of this model. The frame, during the purchase, must also be carefully inspected, because it can also suffer from corrosion. It was replaced with a UAZ-469 frame on many gases.

Engine for GAZ-69

The GAZ-69 engine is the same as the M20 Pobeda. Volume 2.12; power - 55 liters. from. (at 3600 rpm). In general, this motor has good traction (127 Nm at 2000 rpm), for which off-road pirates love it. truth maximum speed this car has 90 km / h.

It is the excellent off-road capabilities that the photos of the GAZ-69 show and are impressive, it is such off-road capabilities that made this car popular in the CIS countries. Among the then farmers, builders and revolutionaries of the 60s, the GAZ-69 was quoted on par with Land rover(it was inexpensive then) and the Jeep CJ series. But the payment for excellent cross-country ability and survivability is the need for maintenance and frequent fuss. But in those years, fussing during repairs was a common thing.

Front hubs are connected using a lever transfer case, this can be done at any speed, even without squeezing the clutch. But the downshift is recommended only after stopping, and the reverse transition to the top gear is best done on the go. What else is interesting that center differential not here, and driving on a normal road in Soviet times was not recommended in order to save gasoline.

The clutch is generally unpretentious, there is a mechanical drive for turning it off, the clutch is once per thousand km. need grease for levers and release bearing.

Leading bridges need to be serviced every 6 thousand km. In general, "native" bridges today are a rarity and instead of "native" bridges they put 469th or Volgovskie bridges.

The suspension of this Soviet jeep can withstand any off-road conditions, but there is nothing to say about the roads at all. So this suspension is on longitudinal springs with double-acting shock absorbers. This suspension is perfect for towing an 850 kg trailer or a battalion cannon. But with such a load, it will be possible to drive at a speed of 40 km / h.

The rear springs of the GAZ-69, due to their large thickness, are more rigid and they are of 11 sheets, and the shock absorbers are of a lever type, every 6 thousand km they need to be refilled with fluid, and for the new season they must be dismantled and completely washed. Now you will not find such nodes and instead of them it is better to install telescopic shock absorbers, they are more unpretentious.

The GAZ 69 engine is legendary car Gorkovsky automobile plant, which marked the beginning of the no less legendary series of UAZ cars, nicknamed "Bobik", which were especially popular with the militia of the USSR, and later of the CIS countries. The motor of the legendary "Kozlik", this is the popular name of the 69th Gazik, had a rather simple design and was quite hardy.

Specifications

As for the technical characteristics, they are very typical for the time in which the power unit was developed. Considering that the engine comes from the 50s of the 20th century, and even in the USSR, then of course it was carbureted. In addition, the maximum speed that could be given was 90 km / h. Although, few people are able to boast that they developed such a speed, because on 3 stepped gearbox it was pretty hard to do.

The car had a four-cylinder in-line engine that, appearance more like a scaled-down version of a tractor motor. But, in fact, it was so. If we talk about the ratio of consumption - power, then this is the case when everything is sad.

Consider the main specifications, which the GAZ 69 engine possesses:

The power unit had a two-phase oil purification. First, the oil passed through a coarse oil filter, and then a fine oil filter. In the first case, it was a sump with metal meshes, and in the second, a replaceable cardboard element.

A three-speed manual transmission was attached to the engine, which had a two-stage transfer case. The clutch was installed Gazovskoe, single-plate and dry type.

Engine tuning

Of course, the 69th Gazik considers it a hopelessly outdated model, and only amateurs retro car and tuning resurrect legendary cars. So, in order to tune the engine, many tuning studio specialists will say that it is worth throwing out the power unit completely. But, as practice has shown, a Russian person can do everything, if there is a desire.

As in all cases, with the old Soviet cars, tuning can only be done mechanically. Therefore, the engine bulkhead should be approached responsibly. The only nuance that stops many motorists who want to modify the engine is the lack of spare parts.

If we are talking about a complete revision of the motor, then a familiar turner and milling machine will be required, since most of the internal parts will have to be ground over again. The rest can be converted from the existing range of spare parts to other vehicles.

The refinement technology is no different from other engines. Is that the lower location of the valve mechanism. But, this is also not a problem, since in this case, the engine is similar to power units MTZ and GAZ-52.

Since the engine is not capable of accelerating to prohibitive speeds, it makes no sense to install a tuning version of the cooling system, except for beauty.

Retro exhibitions

GAZ 69 with its legendary engine can be found in vintage car museums, as well as at retro exhibitions. As practice has shown, there are many motorists who not only alter (tune) the engine, but also return it to the factory state. The very first GAZ 69 car with an original engine can be found in the history museums of the GAZ company, where the car occupies an honorable place among other legends.

Output

The GAZ 69 car with its own engine became an entire era in the automotive industry of the USSR. To this day, on the roads you can see how this legendary car slowly drives. There are lovers of this vehicle, which carry out not only tuning the outer part, but also the engine.
