The second generation Renault Sandero Stepway is built on the basis of a “civilian hatchback” and, like it, has only front-wheel drive. The suspension of the new product is spring, completely independent, based on MacPherson struts and a stabilizer lateral stability front and semi-independent with torsion beam and anti-roll bar at the rear. We purchased our “Bitch” in September 2015. At the time of writing this review, we drove it (over almost two years) 39,000 km. The first year was a “break-in”, and fuel consumption was higher than now (9-10 liters per 100 km versus 7-8 liters now), and the engine seemed noisier.

After a run of 20,000 km, the car became more playful than when purchased (I read somewhere that this is the case on many Stepways). I quickly got used to the cruise control (now I use it even in the city), the steering wheel joystick for controlling music is also convenient (I don’t know why many people criticize it).

What I liked about the car is the relative high cross-country ability even on standard Continental tires(I only got stuck on clay after rain - the clay licked and rolled up and clogged the fender liners), but I love driving everywhere - dacha, river, forest...

Often it was saved by the fact that the original steel protection of the internal combustion engine was installed, the muffler was “hidden” in the bottom niche. I realized this when I looked at the “belly” of the car from the pit - everything is beautiful, but the “lip” of the bumper (a protective beam, but made of plastic) was a little shredded.

I immediately noticed the complete lack of heat/sound insulation of the car - in winter, after stopping the engine, the interior cools down quite quickly, when driving either in winter or on summer tires You can very well hear the rustling of stones and sand along the wheel arches and the clatter of spikes.

The quality of the carpets on the floor of the cabin and in the trunk is disgusting - after each cleaning with a vacuum cleaner, quite a lot of lint remains on the brush.

Separately, I want to say about the quality rims- they are frankly soft - they bend when getting into good holes and are also easy to straighten with a sledgehammer (observations on several similar machines).

Also, you should not operate the car without covers - the quality of the beautiful seat upholstery leaves much to be desired. The same problem affected the steering wheel braid - everything is beautiful, pleasant, but... after 35,000 km, scuffs on the steering wheel became visible, and the skin began to crawl out.

Where can I buy?

I took the car in August and managed to drive it off-road in the fall and winter. What can I say, for my money it’s a reliable car with 20.5 cm under its belly (I’ve never got stuck anywhere on bumps, curbs, holes, etc.), a torquey, economical Nissan engine (compared to the snail’s 86-horsepower one that was in my first model). On the highway you can push it down, uphill or when overtaking it’s enough.

It’s too early to judge how well the iron is made in Samara compared to the tin-plated bodies that were imported from Romania for the first Sanderos, time will tell.

About the interior: good plastic, does not scratch, the seat upholstery material is of high quality. the body is strong.

Cross-country ability: rushing through mud and snow like a small tank (climbed into loose village snow and into the forest with deep puddles right up to the rapids after rain), but all-wheel drive lacks.

Speed: after the high-speed Megan, of course, it took a month to get used to it, cruising - 120 km (it will still go easily, but I decided not to force the engine in the first thousand). The car is short, almost like a Niva, so speed limit I advise car enthusiasts to be careful.

Adaptive power steering is all about good car feel at high speeds

The first generation Stepway had a different manual transmission than Logan and Sandero. The new car, judging by the factory data, has the same gear ratios as its relatives. The unification was carried out without compromising traction: main couple still “short” (4.5).

The range of modifications has become slightly wider. Previously eight-valve Gas engine worked in tandem only with mechanics, and the 16-valve unit was combined only with an automatic transmission. Both engines are now available with manual transmission. Add here new body colors, two trim levels, packages additional equipment and version with automatic transmission programs that will appear in the near future. Stepway looks more and more like independent model, and not just a hatchback with an off-road body kit. For the first time, the system was installed on Sandero Stepway ESP stabilization with rollover protection function (ROM), climate control, heated windshield, cruise control, multimedia system with Media Nav navigation. Those who are not ready to fork out for a seven-inch color display can choose a car with a simpler audio center or even with plugs instead of “music”.

Such wheels are called textured. They look like light alloy wheels, but in reality they are stamped steel wheels with a cap. It’s nice that the spare tire is also textured, and not a standard “pancake”.

ODE TO PENDANT

For Russian market modifications with well-known 1.6-liter engines in Russia were selected. Not the latest technology, but unpretentious and reliable. And - no downsizing! It is clear that Stepway with an 82-horsepower engine does not impress with its agility. But with the air conditioning on, three passengers and a full trunk, it drives confidently even on mountain roads. Of course, when climbing steep slopes you have to regularly toggle the lower gears - sometimes it even gets to first if you're going uphill. And even in plug turns like “mother-in-law’s tongue.” But it’s not easy for all cars on the serpentine road. Sixteen-valve engine with a power of 102 hp. noticeably faster, but it is perceived as truly lively only in the city - in races from traffic light to traffic light - and in the mountains it also fades on the climbs. It's bad form to demand outstanding driving characteristics on asphalt from a raised hatchback. And how good it is that it can pleasantly surprise: body roll in corners is less than expected, wide “shoes” hold the road perfectly, and the steering wheel becomes pleasantly heavier as speed increases. They worked thoughtfully here with the highway settings, nothing can be said.

Not luxurious, but neat and modern. On the center console there is a multimedia system with navigation. The power window buttons have moved to the door armrests.

What about on a country road? If you don’t drive a single-wheel drive car into a muddy mess, it’s great. The pendant has retained its signature features. It is still energy-intensive and impenetrable. Not every crossover has this, let alone passenger cars. You should have seen what impressive ditches we had to take at speed so as not to slow down on the climb - and nothing, Stepway managed. On the test dirt route I didn’t even scratch my belly even once. Decent ground clearance and small body overhangs are the dream of summer residents, fishermen and mushroom pickers. Nice, durable and cute in its own way. Of course, there are disadvantages, including ergonomic ones. For example, the power window buttons have been moved to the door armrests, but the driver has only two front power window buttons at his disposal, and the rear power window control keys are located on the center console. But this feature was inherited from Logan. There are no hooks for clothes in the cabin, although the parts are cheap. There are other little things that, however, do not change the overall picture: Stepway is a decent car for the money. And it seems to have no competitors - except perhaps Lada Kalina Cross. And further. This rare case, when with the change of generations the car did not become more expensive, but, on the contrary, became cheaper. The previous Stepway was sold for 510-566 thousand rubles, and the price range was new car with a manual transmission - from 485 to 559 thousand.
