Comparison with Nissan Almera, carried out by us in the 17th (September) issue of the newspaper last year, Chevrolet Cobalt endured with dignity. He pleased us with the volume of the cabin and luggage compartment, "liveness" of the power unit and endurance of the suspension. At the same time, in the compared versions, Cobalt turned out to be cheaper than Almera. This gave him a well-deserved victory. It's interesting that Nissan Almera, which we paired with Cobalt, is based on Renault Logan the first generation, and is produced in Tolyatti, where they now make Logan 2.

Let's start with the Chevrolet Cobalt - it has a more complex "biography". This car was born in 2011 and formally belongs to the second generation of the model, since from 2004 to 2010 the first generation Cobalts were produced and sold in the USA, which, however, have practically nothing in common with the car that now in front of you. Besides the name, of course. They were made at the Lordstown, Ohio plant before being replaced by the Chevrolet Cruze.

The "second" Cobalt, built on the Gamma II platform, common with Aveo and Spark, was originally focused on the so-called developing countries (or third world countries). Even the concept of this model was first shown not in New York or Detroit, but at the motor show in Buenos Aires in 2011. Actually, it was created not in the USA, but in the same Brazil, where they began production. The car quickly became quite popular, and in 2012 its production was launched at the General Motors plant in Uzbekistan (formerly UzDaewoo) with a planned production volume of up to 120,000 cars a year. Cobalt is also supplied from Uzbekistan to the Russian market. The car is coming with only one engine - a 105-horsepower 1.5-liter gasoline, combined with a 5-speed "mechanics" or a 6-band "automatic".

Renault Logan of the first generation, which has been produced since 2004, including by the Moscow Avtoframos plant, has become a real bestseller for us. It was often criticized for its design, but extolled its working qualities, combined with affordable price. However, nothing lasts forever ... In 2012, the company introduced a second-generation car, and its production began in Romania under the Dacia brand. A little later, the car began to be sold on the Ukrainian market. And Logan 2 came to us only this year - sales started in the second quarter. And what is most curious: the production of the new Logan was placed in Togliatti, at AVTOVAZ, on line B0, where they are already assembling Lada Largus(i.e. Dacia MCV) and Nissan Almera, and in the very near future will begin production of hatchbacks such as Renault Sandero and Sandero Stepway. And our "Logan" so far also has only one engine - a 102-horsepower 1.6-liter engine, equipped with only a 5-speed "mechanics".

Chevrolet Cobalt is very difficult to call attractive or pretty. To put it mildly. It is clear that the design of this car was not included in the list of priorities of its creators, and they performed it according to the principle of Alena Apina - literally "I blinded him from what was." This is most clearly seen when looking at the car from the front. The headlights here should definitely be different - say, about the same as those of the Logan. From the side, the car looks tolerable, but if it had normal headlights and large, rather than 14-inch (!) Wheels, it would look better. Probably the most advantageous view of the Cobalt is from behind. Vertical lights in combination with a branded "butterfly" on the trunk lid remind you that this is still an "American".

The interior would also look acceptable if it were not gray, but black plastic, and not this - moped - instrument panel, but some kind of "adult" tidy. But all this, of course, is a matter of taste, some people like it anyway. But what is certain is the significant space of the Cobalt cabin and its immense trunk. 545 l - a class record! Despite the external simplicity, Cobalt and seats are quite comfortable. True, the rear passengers clearly lack at least some semblance of support. And don't look at the Pioneer turntable, obviously an outdated model (and 1DIN size). It was put on a test car so that we would not get bored. In the LT package, like ours, only audio preparation is provided. The LTZ receives an AUX/USB radio and four speakers. Extremely poor by modern standards, of course, but still something. If we reduce the impression of inspecting a car to one phrase - “it doesn’t get easier”.

And a completely different impression of the new Logan. Yes, on our test, the richest equipment of the model is Luxe Privilege, but Logan 2 looks quite decent even in the initial Access equipment (which, however, you can hardly find on sale). Everyone is comparing new Logan with the previous one, which was not called as soon as it was for its straightforward design! For example, a box. The edges of the new one have been smoothed out, the corners rounded off... Of course, this did not make him handsome, he is unlikely to get into the design museum, but now he looks clearly more elegant. Especially with chrome-plated design elements, as in the test version, on alloy rims and in metallic. It's about appearance.

As for the interior, the changes that have taken place draw on the title of a small revolution. Firstly, the front panel itself has acquired smooth curves. Secondly, several types of plastic were used - both light and dark. However, this is only in expensive trim levels, as is the presence of the Media NAV multimedia system with a large touch screen. The instrument panel is also good, as if from more expensive car. And what will definitely be appreciated by those who know Logan of the first generation well - new car there is no horn button on the left stalk. You can buzz like everyone else normal cars, - by pressing on the steering wheel hub! A major improvement and a sofa back that can be folded in parts (also in expensive versions). But only it stands more vertically than before, which is why the back row is a little cramped than it was. By the way, size new car a little more than before. In length, it grew by less than 100 mm. The width has decreased by a few millimeters, as well as the height. The wheelbase used to be 2630 mm, now - 2634 mm. The trunk volume remained exactly the same - 510 liters, although the configuration of the compartment has changed slightly. Yes, and the sofa here is almost as flat as in the Cobalt. But the hood stop is gas. One, but there is. The "Cobalt" is just a backup.

Cobalt pleased even on Uzbek roads - during the presentation of the model before entering the Russian market. Surprisingly good soundproofing. One of the secrets is the use of double seals on the doors. I liked the coordinated work of the engine and gearbox - the car drove exactly at its 105 forces. And at the same time it is quite economical. There is no need to talk about the special sharpness of the steering, but about the adequacy - quite. And the most important thing is the suspension, adapted to our roads. If desired, it can also be “pierced”, but this desire must be really big and strong. Even on fairly large potholes in the canvas, the car usually responds only with slaps of the wheels and not frightening swaying of the body up and down.

Similar impressions were at one time from trips to the first Logan. In the second, according to subjective feelings, the suspension is more sensitive to small road irregularities. She resists large ones just as well. But I would prefer the former indifference to the unevenness of any "caliber".

Obviously, the designers have improved the sound insulation in Logan. The power unit, in fact, is old, the same as before, so you can’t say anything new about it. Even economic indicators remained exactly at the same level. However, due to the silence in the cabin, the feeling of dynamics is hidden, and it seems that the new Logan is slower than the previous one. There are no complaints about the steering with variable hydraulic booster. Quite comfortable. There is a claim to too high grip - not everyone can immediately “grope” when the disks close. Yes, there are questions to the not very clear gear shift mechanism. Even though he was like that before.

As mentioned above, contrary to our custom, this time we are comparing not the maximum versions of cars. Rather, Logan is just the same in the most expensive configuration - Luxe Privilege for 515,000 rubles, and even with options for 28,000 rubles. But Cobalt is just in the initial, LT, with mechanical box transmissions, for 483,000 rubles. Plus options - "metallic", air conditioning, a security package that includes a second airbag - this raises the price to 538,000 rubles! And the maximum Cobalt equipment LTZ with automatic transmission costs 572,000 rubles. However, she loses to the most expensive Logan in terms of equipment.

It should also be noted that theoretically new Renault There are at least two more very inexpensive versions of Logan, starting with the base Access for 355,000 rubles, which is equipped with an 82-horsepower 8-valve engine. But, as is usually the case, finding such a car from dealers is extremely difficult. And for the price of the simplest "Cobalt" you can see "Logan" in Comfort and Privilege versions. By adding a little, you can even buy the same Luxe Privilege, but only with an eight-valve. Yes, "Logan" does not have a "machine gun", but this is a temporary phenomenon. But the choice of versions is richer. This wealth of choice and a much lower starting price put Renault Logan in the lead.

The first generation was considered a rookie debutant in the segment inexpensive sedans, then the second generation turned him into an experienced master. Now - this is the starting point for all the "recruits" who have not yet had time to sniff the gunpowder. And the manufacturers of the Chevrolet Cobalt, who released this model as a direct competitor to Logan, should have understood this. Let's take both cars apart and find out if Cobalt Logan is worthy?

The fact that over time everything changes - both the budgets of buyers, and the concept of "real" good car- not news. I recall that a few years ago they said that the idea of ​​​​the French automakers regarding Renault Dacia / Logan would cost good money. It seemed like they were counting on the amount of 5 thousand US dollars and did not aim for more. And indeed, at first the project was implemented and the first Logan went to the masses, only now the price confidently stepped over not 5, but 10 thousandth mark. Today the dollar is not what it used to be, but Logan is still holding on and he doesn't have too many competitors.

Interestingly, the manufacturers of Renault Logan set out to not easily compete with A-class cars, but to compete in a higher class. And the designers are trying, which is remarkable, by any means to create a good spaciousness of the cabin and make the size of the trunk incredibly voluminous. This rearmost compartment is larger than many golf cars and even rivals the trunks of some D-class sedans.

Known a few years ago, she also became interested in the release of similar budget models that would always keep the price. Citroen C-Elysee and the 301st, and last year Chevrolet, decided to play by the same rules and released a direct competitor into the arena - Chevrolet Cobalt. This car is the development of one of the branches of General Motors, which was originally aimed at the countries of the so-called third world. It was decided to start production of the Chevrolet Cobalt, respectively, in one of the Central Asian republics.

What are the differences

Let's start with the design, it would seem the most thankless task, but what can you do. It was the exterior surfaces of the Chevrolet Cobalt body that made us do it. They seem to be ironed, if not by amateurs, then by novice designers, but you can’t say this for sure by Logan’s appearance. It is immediately clear from it that this is a second-generation car, no money or effort was spared to improve its exterior.

The interior of both cars evokes almost the same sensations. Logan, for which exquisite solutions and expensive materials were limited (why be surprised, because this is a state employee ?!), should not have been, but it is perceived much more pleasantly and more logically than Cobalt. Here it is impossible not to note the layout features Salon Chevrolet Cobalt, where for the sake of maximum spaciousness, they emphasized in favor of a vertical landing and placed the front seats clearly high. It turns out that with an average build, even at the lowest position of the seat, it will still sit high, like on a chair. It seems that in this situation you expect excellent visibility, but alas, in order for this to come true, you need to at least double the front pillars.

As for ergonomics, Logan could only be scolded for minor flaws, such as the LED button for the air conditioner, the rear power window keys, and so on.

In both cars, there is sufficient clearance in front of the knees of the rear passengers. As much as 10 cm of clearance is enough to comfortably travel the longest distances.

In general, both in height and length, Logan represents more space. But the width is more spacious in Cobalt, which is clearly seen at shoulder level.

No one was going to judge strictly by driving characteristics. The fact is that it is enough for such sedans to show acceptable control accuracy, predictability of reactions and excellent stability. The rest is not so important.

But to test thoroughly the energy intensity of the suspension is another matter. And both sedans did not let us down, showing good resistance to breakdowns on rough roads. On our Russian roads this parameter is very important.

Still more comfortable ride on Logan. Cobalt shakes more often on small bumps, and its body plays in unison with the longitudinal and transverse differences in road surfaces. All this negatively affects not only the passengers, but also the driver, who is constantly tense. roads are not paved everywhere and Cobalt in this regard is already losing to Logan, who copes much better with bad roads.

But you can’t find fault with the suspension of both sedans. They do not lead to buildup even with alternating irregularities. In addition, with vigorous maneuvering, there is no feeling of rolling, as on some cars. Both cars showed themselves well in terms of motion sickness. Tested on children prone to motion sickness, and everything went without trouble.

Dynamics and its nuances

Some in the test called Cobalt more dynamic. But this is the case if you are not lazy and spin the motor more, switching to low gears in a timely manner.

In the dynamics of overclocking, Logan is unambiguous. He accelerates with great desire, and even from the bottom (without showing much skill, you can safely move off at 2nd speed). Logan does not impose special requirements on the choice of the desired stage and is much more convenient than Cobalt. One could say this: Logan is just the perfect car, but it’s a pity that he doesn’t have an automatic transmission, like the expensive version of Cobalt.

And finally, the most important thing for our buyer, who only recently began to understand that it is not only the cost of a car. So, prices for Cobalt versions start at 483 thousand rubles. I am glad that the basic version of the car includes heated front seats and mirrors in the options package, this is very important for our Russian winter. As for the speaker system, only the so-called “preparation” is provided, for which the owner must already select the head speakers separately. Here is the ABS alloy wheels, "fog", computer, alarm - all this comes only complete with expensive versions, already for 572 thousand rubles, which includes the long-awaited automatic transmission.

As for the Logan, this sedan has a good choice in terms of engines. With a single 5 manual transmission, you can choose an option with 82 hp. With. or from 102 l. With. The most affordable version with 82 hp. With. the engine is sold for 355 thousand rubles. It implies the presence of meager options. The cost of Renault Logan with a 102 hp engine. With. starts from 428 thousand rubles, but here the set of options is much wider. There are ABS, power steering and much more. Although, interestingly, air conditioning comes at an additional cost of 25 thousand rubles. The most expensive Renault Logan equipment includes the necessary set of security and comfort systems, and plus everything, there is an opportunity to become the owner of Multimedia for an additional payment of 14 thousand rubles.

Logan has more options, even though he doesn't have automatic box. This sedan also has a package selection system. All this a priori indicates that Renault Logan again showed a more friendly approach to the buyer than his opponent.

Conclusion

The experience of creating a car tailored for the budget market played a role. Chevrolet Cobalt in terms of consumer preferences is inferior to Logan. On the other hand, it is larger in size, and the configuration of the rear compartment itself is nothing but praise. Cobalt has a powerful and omnivorous suspension, it is unpretentious and simple.

If Cobalt was a little cheaper than it is, then he could compete with Logan, and so, this is still an unripe fruit that still has to grow and grow. Logan can be reproached, except perhaps for archaic engines, the modernization of which the manufacturer was obliged to carry out, even in the absence of real competition in the class.

The results of our comparative test are. The game, to be honest, initially went only one way, and Cobalt acted as a defender. Only in the nomination "Trunk" he was able to win, but in the rest he completely lost to Logan. According to our experts, 69.5 points were given to the Chevrolet Cobalt, which, in addition to a good trunk, also showed good functionality, excellent sound insulation and comfortable steering.

Renault Logan gets 71.5 points. In almost all respects, he is head and shoulders above his opponent, and this is not surprising, because, as mentioned above, experience has done its job.

In the summer of 2012, GM representatives officially announced that they were starting mass production of the Chevrolet Cobalt II sedan, shown earlier at the Buenos Aires Motor Show. This is a really important factor for our roads, because not everywhere is smooth asphalt. If we compare which is more comfortable, then Logan wins a little.

On small irregularities, especially with sharp edges, Cobalt more often disturbs riders with shaking, and also transmits not only longitudinal, but also transverse changes in the road profile to the body in more detail.

At the same time, it should be noted that the processing of alternating irregularities by the suspension does not lead to buildup, and with vigorous maneuvering there is no feeling of rolling. Both participants of the test were checked ...

For this car, the designers managed to provide good capacity and even, moreover, make the rear of the cabin a little wider than that of the opponent.

However, the struggle for longitudinal capacity was not without cost, and the driver's seat proved to be highly positioned even at the lowest level of the adjustment range.

Some of the drivers, especially of short stature, may like this position: I sit high, I look far away.

But when a tall person gets behind the wheel, the ceiling is too low. In general, the interior of the Cobalt is perceived as less comfortable both in terms of ergonomics and overall perception, in particular, due to the finishing materials.

Despite the fact that the rivals are the same in overall width, the space in the cabin at the level of the shoulders of the rear passengers is slightly larger in the Cobalt.

The mirror adjustment panel is successfully arranged on the door, on the same level as the mirror. The numbers are large and easy to read. Dissonance is only in the combination of digital and analog feed. Simple and convenient: handwheels allow you to control the microclimate without taking your eyes off the road.

Both cars show excellent energy intensity of the suspension. But if we compare them in terms of comfort, Logan wins a little.

Nuances of dynamics

Cobalt can be considered dynamic, but with a caveat: to do this, you must not be lazy to spin up the engine more and switch to low gears in time. Logan is undemanding to
the timeliness of the choice of the desired stage. There is no doubt, in terms of ease of operation, Logan is forgiving and as “friendly” as possible.

Regardless of the type of physique, you can easily find the optimal position, spending no more than a minute on it. Access to most of the controls is well organized.

The comments concern only minor nuances of using individual buttons. In interior decoration, the manufacturer managed to avoid feeling like an obvious economical option. The fabric that is upholstered in the seats makes a good impression.

In general, Logan is perceived as a more comfortable, ergonomic and aesthetic car. The front panel is finished with hard plastics, but due to the selection of texture and color
