Unfortunately, motors are not long-livers, and even with proper operation they rarely live up to 200,000 km, the average engine service life is 150-170 thousand km. The design of the motors is such that at low speeds the valves open quite a bit, literally by a millimeter, and this is not enough for normal operation valve stem seals... However, only a hard-core fan can name ten differences between "new" and "not new" MINI. We will help everyone else.

So, the new MINI is larger than its predecessor, adding almost 98 millimeters in length, 44 millimeters in width and seven millimeters in height. However, the wheelbase has grown by only 28 millimeters, so the space in the rear seats has hardly increased. But the trunk has become more spacious by almost a third - its volume has grown from 160 to 211 liters.

The lighting technology of the new MINI has also grown in size, and the headlights can now be fully LED (as well as the rear ones). The radiator grille has become larger - at last it has an old-school trapezoidal shape again, like on the classic "Mini"; the branded round foglights in the front bumper have also been preserved, and the roof line now seems even more impetuous due to the slightly raised side line of the body.

But if the exterior of the new MINI is unlikely to become a revelation for seasoned "minivods", then once in the cabin of the novelty, they will definitely feel like a deceived investor: the difference in quality and interior design compared to its predecessor is simply colossal.

It was for the interior of the old hatchback (and all the other "Mini" cars too) that they used the waste of the interior production of "AvtoVAZ", but the new interior is almost a BMW. Yes, yes, now MINI also has mechatronics, like the big ones. The rotating ring around the gear selector of the new hatchback is responsible not only for the operating mode of the engine, power steering (now fully electric) and responsiveness of the gas pedal, but can also change the stiffness of the suspension. If, of course, the corresponding option is ordered: adaptive dampers will be available for both the MINI Cooper and the "charged" Cooper S.

As for technology, the new Mini is really new. It has a new platform, but with the same suspension scheme, a new line of exclusively supercharged engines and new transmissions.

The basic family of turbocharged three-cylinder units is now considered - they are available in the petrol version (1.2, 102 forces on the MINI One and 1.5, 136 forces on the MINI Cooper), and in the diesel version (1.5 with 95 or 116 forces on the One D and Cooper D, respectively. ). And the top-end Cooper S now sports a brand new two-liter turbo engine with 192 horsepower (280-300 Nm), which will later appear on the front-wheel drive "two" BMW. Gearboxes are either a new, lighter six-speed manual with carbon-coated synchromesh and a sensor to help level the engine speed when shifting "down", or an upgraded six-speed "automatic" with modified hydraulics for smoother and faster gear changes.

But the basic MINI One in Russia will no longer be - the demand for such versions in last years was calculated in units. Therefore, we start the test with the future bestseller - the 136-horsepower MINI Cooper. A bright red hatchback with white stripes and a white roof, on 17-inch wheels - just handsome! Its appearance is not overloaded with details (as on the Cooper S), and at first glance it is almost indistinguishable from the previous "Cooper". Until you sit inside.

Cool fabric / leather combination seats - forget the leather, the texture of the fabric is amazing - deep and with pronounced lateral support. And narrow: plump and aged "mini-people" will be cramped. A plump steering wheel, a comfortable pedal assembly with a soft but informative clutch, and a "mechanics" lever clicking with the clarity of a Zippo lighter. The engine start button on the front panel is no longer there - it has moved to the center console and turned into a red rocker lever.

The three-cylinder engine starts up with a bass rumble: no "odd" vibrations or the ringing chirp familiar to small-cylinder engines. The 1.5's voice is excellent - under traction it sounds much deeper than the previous 1.6-liter aspirated. And there is so much traction itself that the former “Cooper” now seems like a fat man suffering from shortness of breath against the background of the Russian national skiing team. The torque of the new turbo engine is one third higher (220 Nm versus 160 Nm), and it is already achieved at 1250 rpm. Therefore, the new "Mini", in principle, does not care which gear is selected - even in the third one you can crawl at the speed of a lemur, and then accelerate far beyond the "hundred" within one step: the "box" here is very "long". The second ends closer to 100 kilometers per hour, and the third - closer to 150.

And this is a minus. Because the stretched gear ratios deprive the "Mini" of the spectacular turbo pickup, which you unwittingly expect from an energetic turbo engine. And the turbine itself here, it seems, is rather big - its inertness in response to the gas release-pressing is too noticeable.

But how cool the pedal assembly is! The distance between the pedals, the effort on them is almost ideal. The new MINI Cooper with mechanics is now endlessly practicing heel-to-toe jogging, especially if the right roads come along. And on the island of Puerto Rico there are heaps of them.

Narrow, ivy-curling secondary highways with bumpy, bumpy asphalt are the perfect place to experience the new Mini driving in Russia. How? As before. Tough, but very reckless. Perfectly tuned electric power steering - slightly overweight in "Sport", but almost ideal in terms of effort in "Comfort", it has exemplary information content in any of the modes of the mechatronic chassis. Fast, agile chassis (on optional low-profile 17-inch Pirelli P Zero tires, at least), great brakes, quick response and neutral steering balance. If you want to enjoy driving even in traffic jams, the new Mini is the perfect purchase.

Well, if you're looking for something hotter, welcome to the MINI Cooper S connoisseur club. It has a 192-horsepower engine, retuned suspension, big brakes and a daring exterior, especially in a new mustard yellow color with black accents. From zero to one hundred kilometers per hour, the mechanical "Esca" accelerates in 6.8 seconds, 0.2 seconds faster than its predecessor with a 1.6-turbo, and the version with an "automatic" is even faster - 6.7 seconds to "hundreds".

This is because the new six-speed gearbox is really better. It is slightly inferior in terms of the speed of changing the steps to robots with two clutches, and in intelligence - the eight-speed "automatic" ZF, which is installed on the BMW model. But in the context of the MINI, it turns out to be quite good. Works smoothly in "Drive" and changes gears in "Sport" on time. There are paddle shifters, but you will have to use them only out of boredom or on the track. Although in the second case it is better, of course, to choose the version with "mechanics" - it is more honest.

But the "automatic" MINI Cooper S is also able to make hairs move with pleasure in the most unexpected places of your body - because it steers just fantastic. The short wheelbase, agile "stern" and relatively low weight, coupled with tenacious tires and a tireless turbo engine, turn this hatch into a fearless conqueror of narrow and twisted serpentines. And the narrower and more difficult the road under the wheels of the Cooper S, the more often and more actively the hairs on your body will move.

After several kilometers of Puerto Rican mountain roads, it seems that the turns, which the agile "esca" would not be able to screw into, do not exist in nature.

Throttle release or a light touch of the brake that loads the front wheels, and the Esca will obediently screw inward in response to a slight turn of the steering wheel. Opened too early at the exit - it does not matter either: a coolly tuned imitation of a cross-axle differential lock will help to tighten the muzzle inward, and not drag it towards the coconut-laden Toyota pickup, which is reaching its fourth decade.

Loud, agile, shaking, but very tenacious in turns - these words, in principle, could describe the former "Mini". But now we can confidently add "comfortable" to the epithets that the new hatchback is worthy of. True, this comfort will not be driving, but general - so to speak, background. Nice interior, improved noise insulation: the new MINI seems much more expensive than before.

But he actually went up in price.

The most affordable Cooper with "mechanics" in Russia will cost from 899 thousand rubles against 800 thousand that was asked for its predecessor. True, they promise to make the basic configuration richer: xenon headlights and air conditioning will be standard equipment. A 192-horsepower MINI Cooper S will cost from 1.12 million rubles - about 50 thousand more expensive than a car of the last generation. And this is without considering the options.
