High temperature grease for caliper pistons. How to lubricate the caliper: guides and cylinders

13.11.2019

The condition of the vehicle's braking system seriously affects the safety of its operation. Therefore, it must be maintained and checked regularly. One of the components of this system is the brake calipers. It is about them, as well as about the guide calipers, that will be discussed today.

We will look at what kind of lubricant for calipers and guides is best to use, and why you need it at all. To do this, apply different groups lubricants, we tried to consider this issue in as much detail as possible.

Varieties of lubricants

Lubricants are usually sold as a spray or paste. What should be the lubricant for the calipers? The choice directly depends on the driving style of a particular driver. For example, on sports cars or when working in extreme conditions, the calipers heat up to a temperature of about + 300 ° C. And with normal use, this indicator usually ranges from + 150 ° C to + 200 ° C. Also, do not forget that in winter the calipers are constantly exposed to dirt, moisture and chemicals.

Also read our tips on which brake pads best used in a car -

Basic lubrication requirements for calipers and guides:

  • preservation of characteristics in contact with brake fluid and water;
  • preservation of indicators at low temperatures(-35 ° C ... -50 ° C);
  • no aggressive impact on car components made of plastic or rubber;
  • heat resistance - the product must be high-temperature and retain its characteristics at temperatures above + 200 ° C.

Many car enthusiasts use cheap materials that do not meet the listed requirements. For example, such lubricants include the popular lithol, graphite lubricant, nigrol, etc. Such substances perform certain tasks, but not as effectively as is required in this case. Therefore, we recommend buying high-quality developments from well-known manufacturers.

The following categories of lubricants are currently on the market for brake calipers:

  • high-temperature extreme pressure with the use of metals;
  • developments based on mineral oil;
  • funds based synthetic oil.

Synthetic or mineral greases containing metals

These high temperature anti-seize caliper maintenance products can operate over a wide temperature range - from -180 ° C to + 1100 ° C. Consider the fact that paste manufacturers always indicate this characteristic on the packaging or in the instructions for use.

The basis of this material is a mineral or synthetic oil with the addition of a certain amount of molybdenum or copper particles, as well as thickeners. These lubricants, in turn, are subdivided into the following categories:

  1. Complex products containing aluminum, copper and graphite.
  2. Lubricants in which metal elements are replaced by ceramics and magnesium silicate.
  3. Copper pastes with added graphite.
  4. Means based on molybdenum disulfide or copper.

These lubricants include the following products:

  • complex products: Loctite No. 8060/8150/8151, HUSKEY 2000 Lubricating Paste and Anti-Seize Compound for High Temperature, Wurth AL 1100;
  • pastes without metal particles: TEXTAR Cera Tec, HUSKEY 400 Anti-Seize, LIQUI MOLY Bremsen-Anti-Quietsch-Paste;
  • copper-based pastes: LIQUI MOLY Kupfer-Paste, Marly Cooper Compound, Permatex Copper Anti-Seize Lubricant, HUSKEY 341 Copper Anti-Seize, Mannol Kupfer-Paste Super-Hafteffekt, Molykote Cu-7439 Plus Paste, Valvoline Cooper Spray;
  • molybdenum greases: HUSKEY Moly Paste, Loctite # 8012/8154/8155.

Mineral oil based greases

These pastes contain bentonite, which makes them thicker. Also in the composition of this category of products are fatty acids and metal particles. The main advantage of such lubricants is stable work at temperatures from -45 ° C to + 185 ° C. This means that the paste retains its qualities and does an excellent job with the task at hand - lubrication of the guide calipers.

Synthetic oil based products

Such products are usually used not only for the maintenance of brake calipers, they are also suitable for other parts of the brake system. These formulations contain synthetic oils and additives that provide long life, protection against corrosion and oxidation processes. There is also a thickener in the composition. Lubricants based on synthetic oil are not afraid of contact with water, acids, brake fluid. They usually operate in a temperature range of -40 ° C to + 300 ° C.

Statistics show that many car owners who service them on their own prefer copper lubricants for brake calipers and slide rails. Let's consider the main features of these compositions.

High temperature copper greases

These products have three main components:

  • finely dispersed copper in the form of fine particles;
  • synthetic and mineral oil;
  • anti-corrosion additives.

These products are sold in the form of a spray or paste. Due to their high viscosity, they fall into all gaps and are not washed out from there. Copper greases operate over an impressive temperature range, do not evaporate and minimize the effects of frictional forces.

But it is necessary to apply copper grease correctly:

  1. Carefully prepare the work surface of the element by cleaning it.
  2. Apply the substance carefully to the surface, preventing the ingress of dirt.
  3. Do not remove excess part of the product from the part.

Carefully! If your car has aluminum calipers, it is forbidden to use copper grease, as this will lead to contact corrosion of aluminum.

An overview of popular lubricants for brake calipers and slideways

MS-1600. This is domestic development, which belongs to the segment of high-temperature universal products. The paste can work at temperatures from -50 ° C to + 1000 ° C. The grease is resistant to the negative effects of moisture, reagents, alkalis, etc. It also does not damage the rubber components of the automotive brake system. The developers recommend using this tool to lubricate the end and non-working surfaces of the brake pads, as well as the guides and piston of the calipers.

MC-1600 does not react with brake fluids such as DOT 3, DOT 4, DOT 5.1. The cost of a 100-gram tube of MC-1600 is approximately $ 6-8. There are also stickers on sale with a weight of 5 grams, which is quite enough for processing one set of brake pads.

Carefully! MS-1600 grease is not suitable for use with DOT 5.0 brake fluid

Molykote Cu-7439 Plus. An American-made product based on semi-synthetic oil and copper powder. One of the most common caliper lubricants, thanks to the following features:

  • low evaporation rates;
  • work in the temperature range from -30 ° С to + 600 ° С;
  • resistance to solubility and washout.

Molykote Cu-7439 Plus high-temperature grease prevents souring and corrosion of brake system components. It is this tool that is advised to use well-known automobile companies, including Nissan, Subaru and Land Rover.

SLIPKOTE 220-R DBC. No less interesting lubricant, which is even allowed to be used in drinking water supply systems. Reviews indicate that this is one of the most suitable options for the processing of guide supports. But buying it is not easy. In most cases, it is ordered from foreign online stores. SLIPKOTE 220-R DBC can operate at temperatures from -46 ° C to + 299 ° C. The composition is based on synthetic oil, as well as additives that give it anti-corrosion and protective properties... A significant disadvantage of this product was its price - about $ 20 for an 85-gram tube.

Carefully! SLIPKOTE 220-R DBC grease is not suitable for use with drum brakes.

XADO VeryLube. This grease is more affordable price... It helps prevent pads from sticking. Available as a spray in a 320 ml can. The tool can operate in the temperature range of -35 ° C ... + 400 ° C. Does not negatively affect rubber parts. During use, it is recommended to apply the composition in several layers, while before applying the next one you must wait until each layer is dry. A fairly high-quality product for about $ 4.

Carefully! LIQUI MOLY Bremsen-Anti-Quietsch-Paste- a lubricant that was originally developed for the caliper guides, but then the manufacturer decided to refer it to the anti-squeak segment. The reason is a large number negative reviews by users. The developers advise against using this tool to seal in the boots and lubricate the guide pins of the brake calipers.

What is the best caliper lubricant to buy?

The article turned out to be quite voluminous, so it is necessary to make a short summary. Consider the following when choosing a lubricant:

  • conditions of use and riding style;
  • car model;
  • price lubricant;
  • brake system design.

If you do not use the car in extreme conditions, available developments such as MC-1600 or XADO Very Lube are quite suitable.

In a vehicle, the correct functioning of all units and parts is necessary, however, at the same time, it should be taken into account that the braking system is one of the main ones. In the event of a breakdown of the engine or other important components, the car simply will not be able to move, but the failure of the brakes can lead to very sad results. For this reason, every driver must constantly look after such important elements vehicle and regularly carry out preventive maintenance, which is not complex process and is produced independently. I propose to consider what characteristics should be considered when choosing a brake lubricant and which lubricant is most suitable for the calipers. Only by using quality materials can the reliable function and fastening of the brake pads be guaranteed.

The brake caliper is one of the most important components of the braking system. It is on him that safety while driving, as well as the life of passengers and the driver himself, directly depends.

As a result of strong friction, disc brakes can reach temperatures of up to 500 degrees Celsius. If vehicle located in an aggressive environment, for example, when driving downhill, the caliper parts are also affected. For this reason, only good quality lubricants should be used on the slideways.

Grease for the caliper guides, which gives brake lubrication

It's no secret that the braking system consists of pads, disc and calipers. Over time, the pads have a tendency to wear off and need to be replaced as a result. In addition, many other factors affect this node, such as: negative weather conditions, extreme driving or salt that is sprinkled on icy road surfaces.

However, replacing the pads will not solve all the problems. In order for the caliper guides to function correctly, they need high-quality lubrication, which will fully ensure a trouble-free ride of the vehicle.

Technical characteristics of lubricants

Manufacturers of lubricants are guided by the specific conditions in which a particular unit will operate on a daily basis.

Taking into account various parameters, in particular - quality brake fluid, operation of cars in different weather conditions or too high a temperature during friction of the brake pads, a brake caliper lubricant is needed with special characteristics:

1.Resistant to the effects of various chemical compounds and to any kind of water - rain, fog, snow.

2. The lubricant must be high-temperature, that is, its working temperature should be between 150 degrees Celsius and, if necessary, higher.

3. It must be compatible with elastomeric seals and plastic elements.

4. At high temperatures, the grease must remain the same viscous to prevent leakage.

Based on the parameters described above, you should choose a lubricant for the brake calipers of your vehicle.

Copper brake grease

For staples, anti-squeak plates and metal coatings of the pads, or more precisely, for their back side, high-temperature and anti-seize paste is used. This group includes copper lubricants with graphite and copper powder, with a non-metallic filler, complex, that is, with different components and with molybdenum disulfide.

Copper paste is able to provide protection and lubrication to components that are under stress at all times, such as the mountings for the suspension, brake and intake systems. In addition, copper paste is also used for lubricating spark plugs, since it is resistant to high temperatures and they have no ability to influence it. Due to this, the paste is also used to lubricate the joints in the exhaust system.

To lubricate the required element with copper paste, you must first clean it from corrosion. After that, apply the paste with a brush or brush and distribute it evenly over the entire surface. The whole process takes only a few minutes.

Due to the wide temperature range in which copper paste can be used, it is used in the energy, oil industry and many other areas.

There is another unit in the vehicle where copper grease can be applied. When sticking or freezing hand brake, the wheels are not able to spin. This can happen after visiting a car wash in the winter or after a long standing car on the handbrake. In this case, the paste must be applied to the parking brake cables and rear pads, which will negate the chances that the parking brake will not want to move away.

High temperature grease

These pastes are used for pins, bushings, piston edges and so on, however, they cannot be used with silicone components.

Multi-purpose grease

Universal greases are used for all moving parts of the caliper, including elastomeric and plastic ones.

Best Manufacturers and Best Caliper Lubricant

If you are interested in knowing which paste for calipers is the most effective and high-quality, I propose to revise the products of manufacturers of narrow specialization:

1. "Huskey341" from the manufacturer HUSK-ITT Corp.

2. Kluber Lubricarion Munchen K from the manufacturer "Kluber".

4. "Molykote".

5. "Liquid Moli" - high temperature and one of the most effective.

High temperature:

1.ATE plastilube.

Universal:

1. "MC 1600".

2. "Molykote" AS-880N Grease.

3. "Slipkote" Disc Brake Caliper Grease.

For example, among the CIS countries, one can note the Berdyansk plant "AZMOL", which is located in Ukraine, however, it is very difficult to find their products in retail.

It is necessary to clean and lubricate the calipers every time you replace the pads. For this, it is necessary to clean all accumulated dust and dirt. Then, you need to lubricate the shoe guides, guide pins and their anthers inside. So that the caliper does not hang on the hose, it is advisable to hang it on a wire. In addition, clean it very well so that no traces of rust remain anywhere. Further, the ends of the pads should be sharpened with a file and all parts should be installed in their places. To close the caliper, the brake cylinder must be pushed deeper. Do not forget about the brake fluid level. After assembly, bleed the brakes. After lubrication of the rails, a large amount of dirt may accumulate, although this depends on weather conditions.

There are also caliper lubricants that are not able to collect dust and dirt, such as LiquidMoliKufperPaste.

It should be said that there is no need to save on lubrication, since low-quality pastes can crystallize and solidify. It is unlikely that inexpensive lubricants from dubious manufacturers will be able to guarantee optimal, long-term and trouble-free operation of the brake system. It is necessary to choose a lubricant for your car according to the classification by groups.

Car and motorcycle manufacturers advise the use of silicone and high-temperature lubricants, as they are the best and guarantee trouble-free operation of the brake system, reliably protecting it from aggressive influences the environment- dirt, temperature changes, moisture and dust. Therefore, when choosing a lubricant, you need to pay attention to those materials that meet the requirements listed above and have a manufacturer's quality certificate.

At the very end, I would like to say about quite common graphite lubricants, the so-called "graphite", which is strictly forbidden to use for lubricating brake calipers. They keep relatively high temperatures and may burn out or leak.

In road transport, every detail and assembly must work well, but it must be remembered that the braking equipment is one of the main ones. In the event that the engine is out of order, the vehicle will not work, but if the braking equipment is faulty, the trip may end in failure. This is the reason why you need to monitor your car all the time and carry out preventive maintenance in a timely manner, which almost every motorist can do. In this article, we will talk about a caliper lubricant, and what you need to pay close attention to when choosing one.

So, to ensure smooth operation, strong fastening of the pads, as well as the entire system, only reliable and high-quality materials should be used.

What is the need for these materials

As many people know, brake mechanism consists as a whole of calipers, pads and the disc itself. But with prolonged use, the pads begin to wear off and, therefore, they must be replaced for your own safety. Of course, this node is also affected by other factors, such as: salt or sand sprinkled on the road during icy conditions, weather, fast driving, and hence the conclusion how important right choice materials.

However, new pads will not solve all the troubles. Thus, for the correct and safe work guide calipers, as well as for trouble-free movement, only the best lubricant should be used.

Main characteristics

The experts who developed the lubricants take into account the conditions under which a particular unit will function day after day. Even if we take into account different parameters, for example, that during friction the pads can heat up to 550 C, the quality of the oil, the driving of cars at any time and in any weather, then the lubricant on the calipers must have certain properties. What characteristics should she possess:

1. Be resistant to chemical attack:

· rain;

· snow;

· fog.

2. Withstand high temperatures (normal operating temperature from + 155 C, but can also be higher).

3. Must fit well with both elastomeric seals and plastic parts.

4. Should not lose its viscosity (this is necessary so that it does not leak out at critical temperatures).

Different groups of lubricants

Lubricants are different in operation and it all depends on what they are for.

1. Universal grease is used for almost all moving elements of the caliper, and in this case, plastic elastomeric parts will not be an exception.

2. Do not use a silicone-based substance on pins, piston edges, bushings, and other parts.

3. Anti-seize and high temperature paste is used for anti-squeak plates and backs of metal surfaces of pads and staples.

Thus, the first group includes the following lubricants:

· With molybdenum disulfide;

· Complex, which include different components;

Copper (graphite, copper powder);

· Containing a non-metallic filler.

Which manufacturer to choose

And then the question arises, which lubricant is best used for calipers? You need to take this task seriously and choose material, preferably from a manufacturer with a small specialization. Let's break down the most consumed lubricants by group.

The first group includes the following:

· "Huskey341" manufactured by HUSK-ITT Corp;

· "Molykote";

· Kluber Lubricarion Munchen K produces "Kluber";

· High-temperature (one of the best) "Liquid Moli";

· German "Loctite" 8012/8154/8155.

To the second group:

ATE plastilube;

Loctite Teroson Plastilube.

Well, the third:

· "Molykote" AS-880N Grease;

· "MS 1600";

· "Slipkote" Disc Brake Caliper Grease.

But as for the territory of the CIS, we can recall the plant, which is located in Ukraine, namely in Berdyansk (plant "AZMOL"). But the goods of its production can only be purchased in bulk.

So, there is no need to save on lubricant, since bad material can at any time succumb to crystallization or harden. It is worth knowing that a cheap substance of unknown manufacturers cannot be a guarantor of a long and flawless operation of brake equipment. It is best to select the lubricant according to the recommendations indicated above.

Of course, you can write a lot of material on this topic, but it is still better to start from experts in the production of cars and motor vehicles. And as we said, the best lubricant is silicone and high temperature. This substance gives a guarantee of trouble-free operation. braking equipment, and you will also protect it from unpredictable weather, that is, moisture, dirt or temperature extremes. Therefore, it is worth knowing, before choosing a lubricant, you should pay attention to the quality, as well as the manufacturer's company, so that the product is certified and has a certificate. After all, it is from your choice that not only your safety depends, but also those of those around you.

This unpleasant and loud defect is known by many drivers firsthand, and it causes completely different reactions. Most often, the owner prefers “not to interfere with the machine to work” - after all, this is the easiest way, and the “soundtrack” does not particularly affect the operation of the brake system itself. However, there are quite a few meticulous motorists who struggle with sound. different ways- for example, lubricating the guides and even reworking them.

How to lubricate

It would seem, what could be easier than lubricating the caliper guides? Many owners do just that - during the next "bulkhead" of the brake system, they take and lubricate their fingers with whatever comes to hand. As a rule, the garage assortment includes lithol and its derivatives, as well as "graphite". The more advanced are puzzled by the search for a specialized composition designed specifically for use in the brake system nodes.

And now - a surprise: in most cases, both of them do wrong! Yes, the guide pins of the calipers do need to be lubricated, but not with what is usually considered a suitable lubricant, even if it is positioned that way in the auto shop.

Automotive manufacturers have their own brands of slideway lubricants.

Here is a list of original OEM greases from some car manufacturers with part numbers:

  • BMW 81 22 9 407 103, 83 23 0 305 690;
  • FORD / Motorcraft D7AZ-19A331-A, XG-3-A;
  • Volkswagen / Audi G 052 150 A2;
  • LAND ROVER RTC7603, SYL500010;
  • HONDA 08C30-B0224M, 08798-9027;
  • MAZDA 0000-77-XG3A;
  • NISSAN 999MP-AB002;
  • SUZUKI 99000-25100;
  • TOYOTA 08887-80609;
  • CHRYSLER / Mopar J8993704;
  • Volvo 1161325-4.

There are also lubricants that are produced by companies producing auto components and "chemicals" under their own brands:

  • ACDelco 89021537 (10-4022);
  • Federal Mogul F132005;
  • FTE Automotive W0109;
  • Stahlgruber 223 1712, 223 1729;
  • TRW Automotive PFG110.

Such different lubricants

Unfortunately, in the overwhelming majority of cases, car dealerships (both online and offline) will usually offer "the wrong thing" - that is, anti-squeak lubricant, which simply cannot be used in guides!

The fact is that copper and ceramic anti-squeak pastes are designed to be applied to the back of the pads and the counter elements of brake calipers, but they are not suitable for "guides" for several reasons. Firstly, after lubrication with grease, lithol, "graphite" and other lubricants based on mineral oils, the rubber anthers of the fingers almost always swell, cease to stick to the fingers and, in fact, simply cease to perform their function.

Secondly, only special greases based on synthetic oils and a thickener are suitable for lubricating the slideways. Due to this, the grease becomes refractory and does not "drain" from the guides after heating, and also does not coke over time from exposure to water and high temperatures. High-quality specialized lubricants hold up to + 300C without any problems, but at the same time they are non-aggressive to seals. Moreover, such lubricants not only do not melt, but also do not dissolve in water, alkalis, dilute acids, brake fluid, as well as methanol and ethanol.

The use of an unsuitable lubricant in practice can lead to the opposite effect - that is, the lubricated guide pins sour in the caliper, due to which the floating bracket loses its mobility, and the pads begin to wedge and overheat.

Hundreds of pages are devoted to the choice of the "correct" lubricant for guides on thematic forums, but the theoretical calculations and practical reviews often contradict each other, which leads to even more confusion.

One of the most common universal greases is the American Slipkote 220-R DBC, although its price is somewhat "biting" - for an 85-gram tube they ask for about a thousand rubles! Slipkote Lubricant is also available in “disposable” 10 gram sachets, which are significantly less expensive.

In car dealerships, they often offer a fairly common lubricant under the guise of a suitable compound for guide pins. Liqui moly Bremsen Anti-Quietsch-Paste (art. 7573, 3077, 3079, 3074) is blue-gray, but the manufacturer himself currently positions it as an anti-squeak paste and does not recommend using it for lubrication of guides and inserts in anthers. In its composition, a ceramic filler is provided, which has a heat resistance up to 1200C, while a synthetic base can thermally degrade much earlier.

3 / 3

In the production line of this German manufacturer there is a suitable Anti-Quietsch-Paste (art. 7656) of red color, which does not affect rubber and plastic elements, but at the same time withstands heating up to + 250C.

In the manual for the repair of VAZ cars, it was prescribed to use UNIOL-1 waterproof grease, made on the basis of petroleum oils, for lubricating the guides. As a rule, in our time it is almost impossible to find it on sale, but it is quite possible to find an analogue-substitute - calcium grease CIATIM-221. It is manufactured in accordance with GOST 9433-80 and is intended for the lubrication of various rolling bearings. There is also a fluorinated version of CIATIM-221F, which, due to the use of ultrafine polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), provides improved extreme pressure and antiwear properties.

TsIATIM-221 is inert to polymers and rubber, and also provides a temperature range from -60C to + 150C, while withstanding short-term heating up to 200C, which makes it suitable for use on most "low-speed" cars like front-wheel drive Ladas, but there are several "but ".

First, the dropping point of CIATIM-221 according to GOST 6793-74 is about 200 degrees - that is, in many cases with active use brakes, it can melt and leak out, so it can hardly replace “branded” foreign-made lubricants prescribed for use on modern foreign cars.

Secondly, CIATIM-221 is quite expensive and is usually found only in large containers, while just a few grams are enough to lubricate the guides. That is why lubricant manufacturers usually sell them in small sachets - but, as you already understood, it is important not to confuse anti-squeak lubricant for brake system units with "the same" product for the guides.

The lubrication of the guides does not always solve the knock problem - as a rule, when the caliper brackets are worked out in the holes during the ride, the parts still move, which leads to the appearance of extraneous sounds.

Lubricate or replace?

Caliper repair kits can be purchased for some vehicles, which include boots, pins, and hardware. True, quite often the guides are made by some unknown person and from something - that is, from "raw" metal, and geometric dimensions are not always correct. Some mechanics manage not to change fingers, and, without further ado, they simply ... rivet them with a hammer! After that, the guides can simply jam in the caliper ...

This is how a finger looks after "repair" with a hammer.

Many car owners were faced with the fact that the calipers began to rattle during the warranty period. Appeal to official dealer often ended with the replacement of assemblies, since not all manufacturers produce individual brake caliper parts as spare parts. At the same time, for Russian VAZs and some foreign-made cars, braces, palms, and brake cylinders can be purchased separately, and factory-made!

Rear caliper guides are necessary for certain tasks such as monitoring the quality of the brake system and correct braking... But nothing lasts forever, and this part tends to wear out quickly enough, although this is influenced by the model and make of the car. Due to the loads on braking system, rims and calipers can reach temperatures of up to 500 ° C.

Temperature deformations may occur from a sharp temperature drop. They lead to low performance of the braking system due to the poor fit of the clutches to the working surface of the discs. The external environment also affects wear: water, mud, sand and more. Grease for the slideways has a good effect.

If, with every careful examination of the brake caliper, or with its full replacement, it is necessary to lubricate all its parts:

  • guide fingers;
  • brake cylinder;
  • fixing parts.

If ignored or treated with unsuitable lubricating pastes, the components of the caliper can be rendered inoperative.

To make the right choice of lubricant for guide pins, working cylinder piston and retaining brackets, you need to know the basic requirements when choosing lubricants:

  • the material used should not change the surface of the product, that is, the lubricant should be gentle on rubber parts, all types of plastic and metal that are part of the braking system;
  • it should not lose its purpose when interacting with brake fluid, water and other aggressive elements that may affect its action;
  • grease for brake calipers must retain the ability to withstand high temperatures up to the maximum limits set by the manufacturer, since at an elevated temperature, it can lose the required viscosity parameters and simply flow out from the processing site;
  • it is important to maintain quality at low temperatures, such as -35 ° C, since this threshold can be reached in domestic climatic conditions in many regions;
  • for extreme conditions the use of specialized more expensive formulations is required, the parameters of which are indicated in the instructions for use.

The use of other lubricants can damage the operation of the brake caliper and cause a road traffic accident.

What is the best lubricant for guide calipers

According to its characteristic features, the lubrication of the brake caliper guides used by motorists is divided into four categories. Each formulation uses unique chemical components.

Mineral or synthetic pastes with metal impurities

It is high temperature Silicone Grease, the meaning is contained in the preservation of their abilities up to 200 ° C (each lubricant acts in the presence of different temperature readings). The composition of the substance includes synthetic or mineral oil, with the addition of a thickener mixed with metal compounds such as copper or molybdenum. They can be divided into the following types of pastes:

  • complex greases with the addition of copper, aluminum and graphite compounds;
  • copper, their composition is copper metal powder and graphite powder;
  • pastes containing ceramics and MgCiO3;
  • disulfide molybdenum grease.

Lubricant based on mineral oils

They are prepared with the addition of natural clay material, which is used in the composition as a thickener. It is added in the form of a powdered metal or fatty acids are such a component. A positive point in this case is that the substance has the ability to operate the composition in various temperature ranges, starting from the minimum values of -45 ° C and ending with a critical degree of + 180 ° C. This indicates that the lubricant does not spill and maintains its characteristic properties.

When used in a lightweight environment, it is the best option for lubricating the guide calipers. The substance is resistant to various aggressive environments:

  • brake fluid;
  • plain water;
  • alkaline solutions;
  • acidic environments.

Also, the tool has a good lubricating ability. Pastes have poor evaporation properties, and they also have a low dielectric constant. The following brands can be suggested as an example:

  • Teroson VR500;
  • ATE Plastilube;
  • Loctite Plastilube.

Synthetic oil based lubricant

The composition is unified, and has a wider application than the previous substances. Its operation has an extended character and is aimed not only at lubricating the caliper, but also for processing other parts in the car. Lubricating pastes are formulated from refined synthetic oils and offer many benefits:

  • have a positive effect on blocking corrosion foci;
  • have an antioxidant effect;
  • reduce the degree of wear of parts.

The composition contains a thickener. Greases from this category have excellent physical and chemical characteristics:

  • do not dissolve in water;
  • do not interact with brake fluid;
  • practically neutral to acid and alkali;
  • they do not evaporate when the temperature rises during operation;
  • are characterized by low electrical conductivity.

The approximate operating temperature range of most brands on the market falls in the range from -40 ° to + 500 ° C.

High temperature materials

Due to its ability to withstand high temperature ranges when the braking system is operating, copper caliper grease is classified as a high temperature grease. The main components of copper greases are three main components:

  • crushed fine copper;
  • synthetic mineral oil;
  • other types of substances that do not allow corrosion foci to appear.

The release of lubricants is carried out in different form factors:

  • in a pasty form;
  • in the form of a spray;
  • like sprayers.

In most cases, the material has a sticky characteristic. Thanks to such properties, it is able to penetrate deeply into the figured cavities without spilling out back.

If you choose to use copper grease, you need to thoroughly clean the surface of the entire part to do this. The application is carried out very carefully, it is necessary to control so that particles of debris do not get onto the working material. There is no need to remove excess grease.

Copper grease must not be used if the transport support is made of aluminum, because aluminum corrosion will occur. Copper and aluminum have a galvanic incompatibility, which is used in other situations.

Lubrication technique

Some drivers, out of inexperience, do not know how to carry out the lubrication procedure on their own, because they have never used similar compounds. When repairing or replacing the braking system, it is necessary to perform a certain number of actions:

  1. If you hear a squeak when braking, it is necessary to lubricate the metal (not friction!) Linings in the brake pads. It is necessary to grease very carefully, on both sides so that the lubricating paste does not leak onto the piston of the working cylinder. We grease the surface carefully so that the grease does not flow out of the boot.
  2. Also, brake pads and hold-down springs are subject to processing, for a softer movement. Everything is applied carefully, avoiding processing of the friction working surface.
  3. Continuous use of such lubricants and timely monitoring will undoubtedly extend the life of the brake calipers and adjacent parts that make up the braking system.

Analysis of the most popular lubricants

There are many different lubricant products on the market. We need to determine, among a huge selection of assortments, which best lubricant for calipers will be better. Consider a few of the most high-quality, according to drivers, lubricants different manufacturers in demand.

Molykote Cu-7439 Plus

Semi-synthetics and copper particles were taken as the basis for this lubricant. The composition is produced in the United States of America. It is intended for processing brake calipers, and therefore has certain requirements for its purpose:

  • the ability to use at temperature scales from -30 ° C to 500 ° C;
  • evaporates poorly;
  • resistant to washing off;
  • complete absence of water solubility;
  • the best degree of protection against corrosive deposits and scale formation.

According to drivers, this is one of the high-quality lubricants that have protective functions.

MS-1600

Grease Russian production... Created taking into account the domestic operating conditions. It is also in demand among drivers due to its ability to withstand all kinds of temperature extremes. This grease has been tested under the most severe operating conditions. MC-1600 has a protective ability against alkali, acid and water.

Lubrication is used in the processing of frontal and non-operating pads. Also does not react with brake fluid. Available in 5 gram packs, enough to handle a full set of brake pads.

XADO VeryLube

One of the most affordable lubricants. Quite qualitatively it fulfills its purpose at different temperature scales ranging from - 35 ° С to +400 ° С, and also has a neutral attitude to rubber parts.

Note the need to apply more than one layer of this lubricant, which will ensure the protection of parts to the maximum level. A minor disadvantage, which can be ignored, is that the composition is a very thick mixture.

SLIPKOTE 220-R

A very benign product that is applicable on a temperature scale from 45 ° C to + 350 ° C. It has high-quality protection against corrosive deposits and overheating. A lot of impurities are included in the grease.

The negative characteristic is the high cost of this material and the inaccessibility, it is not so easy to buy it. The most optimal solution is to order from abroad, through the websites of foreign retailers or car companies. Lubricant can be purchased from the following brands:

  • Permatex;
  • TRW Autospecialty;
  • Pennzoi;
  • Loctite;
  • Toyota.

How not to buy a fake

Before clicking on the "shopping cart" button on the Internet, first inspect the packaging of the purchased lubricant. As a rule, forgeries are made in a tube of poor quality, on which not all information is printed or signs bearing a distinctive character are missing.

To save money, someone can order counterfeit products that will help you save your money, but there will be no guarantee of high-quality work in such a situation, and as a result, everything can lead to malfunction of brake calipers, discs and guides. And as a result, such savings will result in additional expenses for car repair.

Important! Before applying the lubricating paste, carry out a high-quality cleaning of dust and dirt from all parts.
