How to correctly set the ignition on a VAZ 2106 according to the marks

The most accurate result with a carburetor “six” can only be given by a strobe light - a device specially designed for this purpose. But in garage conditions, in the absence of a strobe light, you can also adjust the system, relying on the usual devices that every driver has.

For the work you will need a 12-volt indicator light, a 13-volt wrench and a crankshaft wrench:

  1. It is necessary with the engine not running, with the negative terminal of the battery disconnected.
  2. Set the piston of the first cylinder of the internal combustion engine to the ignition position. To do this, you will need to unscrew the spark plug from it. Plug the spark plug hole with your finger and at the same time twist crankshaft key clockwise.
  3. When there is a compression stroke, air under pressure will begin to push the finger out strongly - this is what is needed.
  4. Now it is important to clearly align the mark on the pulley with the second one, which you look for on the timing cover. The mark in the middle means that the ignition advance is set to 5 degrees.
  5. It happens that some people cannot find their marks. But in fact, there are always marks. Just scrub the surfaces well with a metal brush and turn up the light.
  6. After setting the marks, you can remove the key. Wrap the removed spark plug back and connect the armor wire.

The next stage of work will be to determine the ignition timing:

  1. Before you begin, connect the negative terminal of the battery.
  2. Using a 13mm wrench, you need to slightly loosen the ignition distributor mounting nut.
  3. Here you will need a prepared test light with two wires. We connect one terminal to ground, the second to the low-voltage ignition coil.
  4. Turn on the ignition by turning the key to position “I”.
  5. You need to carefully turn the ignition distributor housing clockwise until the warning light goes out.
  6. After this, you need to smoothly turn the distributor rotor counterclockwise until the contact is open and the light comes on again.
  7. Now you need to tighten the mount and check the behavior of the car while driving.

Checking the correct ignition setting:

  1. You can check the ignition operation right on the road. To do this, you need to warm up the engine and increase the speed to 40-50 km/h. At the same time, switch to fourth gear and drive for a while without accelerating.
  2. Then sharply depress the gas pedal and listen to the engine. A detonation sound or “ringing of fingers” will be heard.

  4. If detonation occurs longer, it is recommended to adjust the position of the distributor.

  7. In this way, you will have to adjust the ignition until the detonation settles in 1-1.5 seconds.

What to do if the distributor is removed

To do this you should:

  1. Align the first cylinder of the engine to top dead point (TDC).
  2. You can find TDC without special tools by plugging the spark plug hole with your finger, as described above.
  3. Next is the mark on the pulley crankshaft. It must be aligned by turning the crankshaft clockwise with the mark on the timing cover (middle mark).
  4. You need to remove the cover from the distributor and set the slider so that it “looks” directly at the contact in the cover of the first cylinder.
  5. Insert the distributor housing.

As mentioned above, the best quality can be obtained only with the help of a strobe light. But you still need to somehow get to the service station.

For such cases, a quick method of setting the ignition “by ear” is perfect:

  1. First, loosen the ignition distributor mounting nut.
  2. After warming up the internal combustion engine and without turning it off, rotate the distributor housing alternately in both directions.
  3. The speed should be approximately 2000 rpm.
  4. Listen to the engine. The best position is when the maximum possible number of revolutions is produced with smooth operation of the power unit without failures.

The ignition system is necessary to create an electrical pulse that ignites the air-fuel mixture inside the cylinder. Depending on the modification of the car, it can be contact or non-contact. Recently, it has become widespread on a contactless basis and operates using a transistor circuit.

The central part of the system is a distributor, inside of which there is a moving contact that transmits an electrical impulse to high-voltage cables.

The latter are connected to the spark plugs. A Hall sensor is installed at the middle part of the distributor, which determines the angular position of the distributor and transmits this information to the switch. It sends a signal to the ignition coil, which converts 12 volts into 25 kilovolts. The distributor itself operates from the crankshaft, so its operation is clearly synchronized. Injection engines an ignition module is used, which itself adjusts the desired timing.

The operation of the contact system has a similar principle of operation, however, the layout does not include a commutator and a Hall sensor. The very essence of the action must comply with the order of spark formation, which should occur precisely at the moment when the piston is at top dead center. Moreover, this process must occur with some advance, because the mixture does not begin to burn immediately, but after a short period of time. Thus, at the moment when the cylinder appears maximum pressure, the piston will reach the highest point and go down.

The result of this interaction was the emergence of two terms that imply early and late ignition. In fact, the ignition should be slightly early, and this angle should not exceed 5 percent. If it is too large, the mixture will ignite too early, which is typical for detonation when the mixture burns too early and the engine starts to heat up more than normal.

This is a very dangerous mode and can lead to serious damage.

Another problem is late ignition. In this case, gasoline burns too late and the cylinders move more by inertia rather than by fuel combustion. Because of this, there is a loss of power, shooting into the muffler, as well as increased consumption fuel. If these signs are detected, as well as with increased overheating of the engine, it is necessary to adjust the ignition timing.

The process of adjusting the ignition of a VAZ 2106

In fact, there is nothing complicated here, and drivers have invented many methods, the main of which is the use of a strobe light. Of course, this is a very accurate method that allows you to set the ignition as correctly as possible on any carburetor car. The mark on the crankshaft pulley and the long mark on the bearing cap should be aligned. To create the required advance, it is recommended to set it to the second mark, which will correspond to an angle of 5 degrees. After this, you no longer need to rotate the crankshaft.

If you don't have a ratchet, you can rotate the motor using rear wheel. To do this, the gearbox must be set to fourth speed and the wheel must be jacked up. To avoid accidental falls, it is recommended to install wheel chocks and stands under the machine.

Now take the key 13 and unscrew the bolt securing the distributor of your VAZ 2106. After removing the lock, pull out the distributor and install it so that its slider is opposite contact 1 of the cylinder on the distributor cover. After this, you can assemble it, but do not tighten the bolt. Lower the machine and prepare to start.

Now you need two people: the first will rotate the starter, and the second will set the advance angle. Hold the octane corrector with your hand and ask your partner to start the starter. It is quite possible that it will not start; at this moment you must slowly move the distributor until the engine starts. This will be the point at which you have set the correct ignition timing. When the engine starts, you will need to continue to rotate the distributor until the engine of your VAZ 2106 operates most stable.

    electronic tachometer.

If your model uses a classic or transistor-type ignition system, perform the ignition settings in the following order.

    We remove the cover from the distributor and use a file to clean the contacts so that they are tightly connected to each other. If necessary, bend the fixed element.

    By rotating the crankshaft with a special wrench, we set the maximum clearance. If you do not have a key, you can perform this procedure by pushing the car, after engaging 4th gear.

    After the maximum clearance is set, unscrew the bearing plate screw.

    Then use a 0.4 mm plate to calibrate the gaps, and then fix the position by screwing in the screw.

    We control the distance between the electrodes with plates of 0.35 and 0.4 mm. In this case, a thin probe should pass easily, but a thick tool should not. Replace the distributor cover.

    We start the engine and check it using the UZSK tachometer. It should be 55°±3°. If necessary, performs its calibration.

    Adjusting the ignition timing

    There are several options for performing this procedure, the following are optimal:

    • using a strobe light;

      using a light bulb;

      by spark;

    – the fastest and most accurate method of calibration, provided that this device is available. First you need to connect the device to the machine's network. Then you should remove the octane corrector pipeline from the distributor and plug it. After this, warm up the engine to the recommended temperature. After this, loosen the distributor mounting bolt and direct the strobe beam to the pulley area. At steady XX speed, rotating the distributor body, we set the first mark of the pulley against the second mark, which is located on the gas distributor cover. Having adjusted the desired position, we fix the distributor body by tightening the fastening bolt.

      By rotating the distributor housing clockwise, set the position at which the indicator lamp goes out.

      After this, move the housing back until the lamp lights up again.

      Use the bolt to secure the distributor.

    If your model has a thyristor or transistor circuit for the VAZ-2106 ignition switch, this adjustment This cannot be done using a light bulb due to the fact that the voltage available at the contacts of the distributor may not be enough to turn on the lamp. In this case, the adjustment should be made using a diode probe or voltmeter.

    Spark adjustment is produced on the basis that a spark appears when the contacts open. First set the crankshaft to a position where its mark coincides with the first division on the gas distributor cover. In this case, the distributor slider will be located opposite the power cable of the 1st cylinder. Pull out the central cable of the distributor and place it at a distance of 5 mm from the ground. Unscrew the distributor mounting bolt and turn on the ignition. Rotate the body clockwise 25-30 degrees. After this, slowly move the body back and at the moment a spark appears, fix the distributor.

    Adjustment by ear should be carried out only in exceptional cases when the above options could not be implemented for one reason or another. First, turn on the engine, and then loosen the fastening of the distributor housing. Rotate the housing to set the maximum engine speed. After this, turn the distributor slightly clockwise and secure the housing with a bolt. In this case, a big mistake is quite likely, however, this will be enough to get to the nearest service station or your garage, where you can make more precise adjustments.

    Ignition performance monitoring

    The results of the ignition adjustment must be tested while the car is moving. Before this, pre-warm the engine and after accelerating 45-50 km/h, engage 4th gear and vigorously press the gas pedal. If the ignition is adjusted correctly, at this moment characteristic popping noises as a result of detonation should appear briefly (1-2 seconds) and immediately disappear, followed by a vigorous increase in speed. 2) Move the piston in the first cylinder of the engine to the ignition position. To do this, you will need to remove the corresponding spark plug. The resulting hole must be closed with your finger, while at the same time turning the crank in a clockwise direction using the key;

3) At the moment when the compression stroke begins, you will feel that the finger is being pushed out by air with great force, which is what you need to achieve;

4) Next, it will be extremely important to exactly align the pulley mark with the second mark, which you need to look for on the timing cover. The middle mark determines the fact that the ignition advance is set to 5 degrees;

5) Sometimes finding marks is a little difficult, but they are there in any case. To find them, you will need to carefully walk over the surface with a wire brush, and then turn on a brighter light.

6) Once the marks are set, the key can be removed. You will also need to return the spark plug and connect the armor wire.

The next stage is setting the ignition timing. This procedure also implies a clear algorithm of actions:

1) The “-” terminal must be connected to the battery;

2) Using the 13th key, you need to slightly loosen the fastening nut on the ignition distributor;

3) Next, you need to use a control light that has two wires. The first one needs to be connected to the ground terminal, and the second one needs to be connected to the low-voltage ignition coil;

4) You need to turn the key to position “I” to turn on the ignition;

5) It is necessary to carefully rotate the distributor body in a clockwise direction until the light goes out;

7) At the end, you need to screw the mount back and drive the car to check its behavior.

How to check the completed work for correctness?

And for this there is a clear sequence of actions that need to be performed:

1) You can check the ignition itself while driving. To do this, you need to warm up the engine and accelerate the car to a speed of 40 - 50 km/h. Then you need to switch to fourth gear and drive for a while without accelerating.

3) The situation will be normal if the sounds stop after some time, which will be enough for the speedometer to pass the 5 km/h mark;

4) If the detonation is longer, the position of the distributor will need to be adjusted;

5) To do this, you need to turn the distributor body clockwise 1 degree;

6) If the detonation sound is very weak or cannot be heard at all, then you need to turn the distributor 1 degree counterclockwise;

7) This adjustment must be made until the duration of detonation is in the range of 1 - 1.5 s.

After installation or adjustment of the ignition has been completed, you need to put the distributor in place correctly. To do everything right, you need:

1) Set the first cylinder of the engine to TDC (top dead center);

2) The location of this point can be determined after the candle has been unscrewed and the hole is closed with a finger;

3) Then you need to find the mark on the crankshaft pulley. This mark must be aligned with the mark on the timing cover by turning the crankshaft clockwise;

5) At the very end you need to install the distributor housing.

1) First you need to loosen the fastening nut on the ignition distributor;

2) The engine needs to be warmed up, but not turned off, after which you need to turn the distributor housing one by one in different directions;

9. Unfasten the holders and remove the cover from the new distributor.


10. Install the new distributor into the cover high voltage wires in accordance with the operating order of the engine cylinders.
NOTES
The operating order of the engine cylinders is 1-3-4-2. The distributor rotor rotates clockwise. Cylinder numbers are marked on the distributor cap and on the engine cylinder head.
