  • GISLAVED NORD * FROST 100
  • Goodyear UltraGrip. Ice Arctic.

  • Pirelli Ice Zero.

"One hundred seventy, one hundred eighty, one hundred ninety ..." - this uncle Vanya recalculates spikes in the next tire. Stop! What, to hell, a hundred ninety, if in Northeuropean countries, where the use of spikes is still allowed, a restriction entered into force in July: no more than 50 spikes on the protector meter? That is, in a 16-inch tire (205/55 R16) there must be no more than 96 spikes! We transform once again - and we are convinced that in the protector of the new tires Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8 after all 190 spikes, almost twice as much!

Why did Finns decide to bypass the new rules - and does such a number of spikes give some advantage over competitors? We'll figure it out in the course of our next comparative test, in which ten models of studded tires of dimension 205/55 R16 took part.

Talking about the tightening rules for the use of spikes are conducted in the Scandinavian countries long ago, and the reason is the reinforced depreciation of the road canvase. "Green" began to argue that the asphalt dust also carcinogenna, that is, causes cancer. And in 2009, a new rate was made public - up to 50 spikes on a pattern meter, and regardless of the width of the tread or the landing diameter of the tire. At the same time, former limitations remained in force: the departure of spikes over the surface of the tread should not exceed 1.2 mm.

What about security? After all, the more spikes, with other things being equal, it will be better for the "hook" for the ice ... Tirenits left the loophole! It turns out that you can install more spikes, but then you have to prove that a more dense misinterpretation will not strengthen the destructive impact on the road. As a result, on the basis of the Finnish test center, Test World developed a method of natural assessment of the effects of studded tires onto the road surface. If in a nutshell, then after a certain number of passages along the granite tiles, the mass of this tile should not be reduced more than after the same effect of reference tires with a "legitimate" number of spikes.

However, such tests did not follow such tests. For example, Michelin decided that this is not a completely honest way to bypassing new restrictions - and threw all the forces on improving tires with a reduced number of spikes. The developers of new tires Gislaved Nord Frost 100 are also received. And the rest?

The rest of the full program loaded their production capacity to release as many tires included in the old rules (no more than 130 spikes for 16-inch tires). After all, the ban that came into force on July 1 concerns exactly the issue, but not sales of tires with the "wrong" misfortune!

And only the company Nokian Tyres went its way: the number of spikes on the tires of the new model HakkaPeliitta 8 not only did not decrease, but increased one and a half times! Naturally, the said test was passed, and, as we became known, they were not at the Test World polygon, but in its own test center near the town of Nokia. It turns out, and so - under the supervision of the official observer from the Trafi transport security agency. Competitors naturally raised noise - they say, with such a number of spikes it is impossible to successfully pass the test!

Perhaps - explains Mikko Lucula, the chief of the development of studded tires Nokian. - For three years we have created fundamentally new lightweight spikes, there are dozens of road coverage tests and are confident that our tires work perfectly on ice.

So, the main intrigue test is indicated.

Uncle Vanya sits behind the wheel of Audi A3, Andrei Mokhov, checking the reliability of fastening the optical sensor, is located on the right and opens the laptop. Now - a dozen braking and accelerations, then - on the lift, shifting the tires, again overclocking and braking ...

Despite the fact that acceleration occurs under the control of the anti-test system, and slowing down - with ABS, spikes crumble smooth ice into the snow powder.

Tested on "acceleration-braking" the last, tenth set of studded tires - and ... first sensation! Least braking distances On the account of ContiCecontact tires. They provided the car and the best acceleration dynamics. And let the advantage over the "sophisticated" tires of Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8 are completely small, but it is! That is, 190 spikes, lined up in 18 rows, work on ice no better than 130 spikes distributed in 12 rows. In any case, in a 14-degree frost. Why? Yes, because to reduce the harmful effects on the roadbed, the Finns really had to change the design of the spikes: they are not only easier, but also less - in height and in diameter - those used in Continental tires. And those used to be used in Nokian HakkaPeliitta tires 7. Yes, and the carbide insert from the "small" spikes is not so powerful.

Two favorites are on the heels of new tires Pirelli Winter Ice Zero.

Another bright novelty of this season is promised to become a Gislaved Nord * Frost 100 tires. There are already 96 "legitimate" spikes - and they provide quite decent braking on ice, although during acceleration - only the eighth result. Ahead of the Goodyear UltraGrip Ice Arctic and Dunlop Ice Touch and Michelin X-Ice North 2. By the way, why Michelin is represented by the way, and why Michelin is represented by the X-Ice North North tires, and not the third generation? The company decided that before the official conclusion to the market of the new model, it was better for anyone these tires for comparative tests not to give.

BRIDGESTONE company prepared new products to the winter season, but also refused to provide them to the official premiere. Therefore, in our competition - Bridgestone Ice Cruiser 7000 tires, which will also be actively sold in our market.

Korean school is represented hankook tires Winter I * Pike, and Russian - Kama Euro-519 tires. On Ice results and those and others are very modest. But while we are talking only about coupling qualities in the longitudinal direction.

The controllability assessment began with a driving on an ice circle with the highest possible speed, and continued on a winding track, where the circle time was taken into account, and a subjective assessment of the convenience and reliability of management. In these exercises tires nokian. Hakkapeliitta 8 won a convincing victory. Excellent "Holder" in turns, excellent control over the car on the highway! By the way, I can safely recommend these tires and those who leave for amateur ice races: "Remove" a couple of seconds from a circle - not a problem!

Continental tires - in second place, and closely behind them - and this is the second, albeit small, but still sensation - the gislaved tires. They allowed me to very confidently drive a car along a winding track.

Another surprise waited for me when the Goodyear UltraGrip Ice Arctic tires were installed on Audi A3. The car slows down well and accelerates, but it keeps bad in the corners. In the first circles, I even "snoring" with an ice track. The benefit around is not metering drifts, but safety bands with a decade-penimetime layer of fluffy snow.

But around the track "Snow" manageability - exactly what drifts ...

The next day, frost slept from fourteen degrees to minus seven. At our disposal is a 600-meter track with perfectly risky snow. Work will be monotonous: overclocking up to 50 km / h, braking, overclocking again, braking again ... But if earlier the driver needed jewelry work to the pedals to eliminate the extra slip of the wheels at the start and blocking during braking, now the electronics is watching this - Traction Control and abs. And soon, it seems, it will be possible to do without a driver.

At the same time, on the next track, the robomobil Audi A4 was honed on his skills! Behind the wheel is still sitting the operator, but only in order to set the desired modes of movement and check the correctness of their execution by the robot. The executive systems on the team of electronics themselves humble on the brake - and even rotate the steering wheel. At the end of the track, the machine independently unfolds and continues to perform measurements already in the opposite direction.

I felt a lightweight tide of professional jealousy, but quickly comforted myself by the fact that there was such a "piece of manageability of a manageability for a long time for a long time will not replace me! By the way, I was allowed to ride a passenger on a car with a robot "driving" - and ... Do not to pull out, the second English Ludditis, this is "Hand" or "foot"? Soon the need for tests will disappear on the tracks and manageability tracks! For example, this car drone is already able to make a "rearrangement" in the snow. Sensors angular speed Sliply detects, the team is immediately given to the steering correction ... Another five years old - and such cars will drive through winding tracks, revealing the difference between the tires!

We still look at the results of manually testing in the snow and see that when braking, they are very close: the difference between the best tires (Dunlop Ice Touch) and the worst (Bridgestone Ice Cruiser 7000) is less than three meters, which is stacked ten percent. When overclocking the spread a little more, about 20 percent, and the favorites here are already the others - the Tires of Nokian HakkaPeliitta 8. That is, the Finns were put not only with spikes, but also with the tread - after all, there are not so many spikes in the snow as the protector.

And on the run of controllability, climbing around the Christmas trees and covered with snow of Valuns, I was calmerly on Nokian tires: fast reactions and fully controlled slides. And in slides, it is better not to slow down, otherwise the stabilization system and tempo will be disconnected by the button. By the way, the indicator is also: if the Nokian tires "woke up" the stabilization system only once, then on other tires bothered it much more often - due to errors caused by stretched slides (they were particularly upset by the Bridgestone Ice Cruiser 7000 and Kama EURO-519 ).

At the beginning of the spring, we completed the tests of the "asphalt" tests by the cycle.

At first, they looked at how the tires on Shuga - a snow-water caress, a flat layer of the coating asphalt. The depth of this layer is only 3.5 cm, and the Hankook tires pop up at a speed of 19.4 km / h. However, the BRIDGESTONE bus tests are not far in this kind - their limit is 21.2 km / h.

And on the wet asphalt, without snow impurities, the shortest braking path on the account of Gislaved tires, and the worst is Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8.

Yes, skeptics from other tire companies have already been told that with such a number of Nokian bus spikes will work well on asphalt. On the wet - it is, but on the dry coating of the Tire Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8 showed one of the best results when braking. This, by the way, is a reason to recall that modern studded tires work on the asphalt is not worse, and sometimes even better not-stuck Scandinavian tires are those that the people are called Velcro. This is due to the tougher rubber, which is necessary for reliable fixation of spikes. Still in the go and the myth that the studded tire rolls along asphalt, relying more on the spikes than rubber. And in fact, the spikes, in contact with the asphalt, are cut into the tread body, almost without reducing the spots of the rubber contact with the road. However, it all depends on what purpose the manufacturer puts, creating specific model tires. By changing the tread pattern, the hardness and chemical composition of rubber, you can shift the balance of the qualities, preferring or behavior on slippery winter coatings (ice, snow), or on asphalt.

Here the Tire Dunlop Ice Touch this balance is clearly shifted towards asphalt: Audi A3 confidently slows down and reacts best to sharp turns of the steering wheel. But on the ContiCecontact tires, the brake path and dry, and on the wet asphalt for a couple of meters is longer, that is, preferences are given to "winter" qualities.

That is what the seized tires always lose is awesome, so it is in acoustic comfort. Noise from them is clearly more, especially if in the protectors, as much as 190 spikes, as well as Nokian tires. However, with a smaller number of Kama Euro, Pirelli, Continental and Bridgestone tire spikes are approximately the same. And the quietest tires - Michelin X-Ice North 2. They are along with the Nokian HakkaPeliitta 8 tires and the most softer.

Like that soft tires Will they behave, hitting a pit or having flown on the guise of asphalt? Two years ago, we already spent the crash tests of summer tires. And now for the first time subjected to a similar experiment and winter tires.

At the speed of 40 km / h, the car runs to the steel channel installed at an angle of 30 degrees - a piece of the beam of the P-shaped profile. If the tire has passed, an attempt is repeated already at a speed of 45 km / h. And so as long as the tire does not "leave the Spirit." Mock the suspension of the new Audi A3 we did not - found the visible types of Mercedes-Benz C 180.

The bridgestone tires were kept most of all: they could only break through at a speed of 70 km / h! And it is no coincidence: when developing its tires, the Japanese take into account the specifics of bad roads, strengthen the design and check their crash tests themselves.

Decently keep the continental buses and tires - they surrendered at a speed of 60 km / h. The main mass of tires was scheduled at a speed of 50 km / h, but Michelin tires, so they liked with their softness, were punched in the first arrival, at a speed of 40 km / h. We even decided to repeat the experiment - suddenly an accident? Ba-Bach! Psh-sh-sh ... and the second tire of Michelin X-Ice North 2 with a pass-through sample is sent to the landfill. And again everything is explained: the French company more and more attention pays to a decrease in resistance to rolling, for which the sidewall is done all thinner (while the so-called hysteresis losses are reduced - energy consumption for heating due to deformation).

By the way, we checked the tires and to rolling resistance - with the help of a running drum. And it turned out that the Nokian HakkaPeliitta 8 tires are easier than the other tires, and not Michelin X-Ice North 2. But this is without spikes, since the seized tires would damage the calibrated surface of the drum. Not the fact that this rating will not change with spikes. However, in terms of fuel consumption, the difference is still small - the main mass of tires is separated by 0.2-0.3 l / 100 km. And the difference between the most "economical" and the most "voracious" tires (they were expected to cover Bridgestone) - 0.6 l / 100 km. And yet, since the experiment was carried out without spikes, we did not take into account its results when you derive final estimates.

With such a number of thorns victory over competitors, especially in ice disciplines, should be just crushed! But the case was limited to the victory, without defeat. On the run of manageability - best time, Driving a car is a pleasure. But the advantage over the ContiCecontact tires, which are less than 60 spikes, minor, and on the acceleration dynamics of the Continental tire even better. Because spikes in the Protector of Finnish tires, though there are many, but they are small: diameter, spike height, width of a carbide insert - everything is smaller here than that of CONTINENTAL tires. Perhaps with more high temperatures, on the "soft" ice, the effectiveness of "small" spikes would be higher, but our tests took place in a 14-degree frost.

In the snow, the Nokian tire is traditionally good: accurate and timely reactions to the steering wheel and gas.

But on the asphalt behavior is unstable. If the Nokian bus coverage provides a good slowdown, then on the wet - the longest braking path. And the expected disadvantage was "itchy" sound from spikes, which did not leave the salon in the entire range of speeds.

On the ice of the Tires ContiCecontact are great. Overclocking and braking are the best in the test, and the balance of demolition and drift on the ice charter's ice highway, as if you are not going on the front, but on the all-wheel drive car. Slightly dropped the gas at the entrance to the turn - and then lead the car on the arc in the controlled slide of the four wheels!

In the snow, the tires are also good, and only not always the relevant easy tendency to the rear axis drift did not allow the highest score for the "reliability of the control".

On the asphalt coupling properties at the average level, although the maneuver "Perealovka" was done very well. The car responds to the first pulse sluggishly, but then the tires are "crimped" and the lateral overloads hold well. It is a pity, sounding with such maneuvers is very obsessive - the Continental tires and in a straight pretty, and in the rotations, the hum is enhanced.

These tires are perfectly holding a blow. And the spikes in them are held to the last: to pull the spike ships planted on glue, it is necessary to attach an effort 2-2.5 times higher than other tires.

Interestingly, will the ContiCecontact bus saved as high rates on the ice after the transition to the lightweight spike? Such tires with the HD index released after July 1, 2013 have already appeared from Russian dealers.

"Not a number, and the ability!" In the tire protector GISLAVED NORD Frost 100, only 96 spikes with a standard departure, but on ice these tires are better than many tires that have 130 spikes. On the control charter - the third time, but the lag from the leader having almost twice the spikes, less than a second! No wonder German Shinniki (Gislaved today - 100 percent CONTINENTAL product) worked on a new protector and new "triangular" spikes! Sliples are small and easily controlled.

And in the snow, decent behavior, although there is a rescue breakthrough on the track of controllability.

But on the wet asphalt - the minimum brake path! At the same time, the tires are noisy and softly "swallow" irregularities.

In general, well-balanced winter tires: confidently work on country tracks and are almost perfect for urban exploitation. And the price looks reasonable.

These tires fell on our test for a month and a half to the official premiere - we did not even know the real name of the model, because there was no labeling on a smooth sidier. But both the protector and the spikes of the new design were already "commodity" - now insert, and the spike body has a complex trapezoidal form.

As for the longitudinal speakers on the ice, Pirelli tires go almost to the dough leaders. But on the track of the manageability, there were sharp breakdowns in lateral slides. However, Pirelli tires, whether winter or summer, always endowed the car with more acute, sports reactions.

Similar behavior is observed in the snow, but here and coupling properties in the longitudinal direction were at the average level.

Here on the asphalt - a good slowdown, both on dry and wet.

The smoothness of the move is good, but a lot of noise - the hum is heard even when moving along the rolled snow.

Let both of the reservations, but we also recommend these tires - first of all those who go in winter predominantly on the snow purified from snow.

When in early February we took this test with the participation of MICHELIN X-Ice North 2 tires, we came to an invitation to official Premiere The next generation tires -X-Ice North 3. But all attempts to get new tires for the test suffered Fiasco! However, in Russia, a novelty will not appear in all dimensions and half the volume of sales of studded MICHELIN tires will have to model X-Ice North 2.

Decent tires, with a pronounced surname feature of Michelin tires, is high stability on a slippery road and soft, understandable transient processes. It is bad that the sliding themselves last a little longer than I would like.

This manifested itself on asphalt: stretched slides prevented the "rearrangement" at high speed. But with braking no problems, and the level of comfort - the praise is above all silent: it is the mild and quietest tires in our test!

It would also be a sidewinter to pouch, and then at the race at the "obstacle", thin rubber is already torn at a speed of 40 km / h, although most tires hold up to 50 km / h, and some remain safe and at greater speed.

In general, very comfortable winter tires that are better to use on the streets of large cities.

The Goodyear UltraGrip Ace Arctic presented last year was immediately among the leaders of our tests, but this year their achievements were not so impressive. The reason could be the changed weather conditions, the progress of competitors, but it seems that the case is in a less high-quality mistake. The spikes - "tri-fins" did not change, but most of them turned out to be overly recessed into the protector - the departure averages 0.9 mm against 1.2-1.3 mm in tire competitors. Here and you need to look for the reason for the backlog of the test leaders and in acceleration, and in braking on ice. And on the head of controllability, the lag is already out of the scope of decency: Audi A3 on Goodyear tires passes the 800-meter highway for ten seconds longer than on Nokian tires! Last year, we noted that the Goodyear UltraGrip Ice Arctic tires work in the longitudinal direction better than in the cross, and now the imbalance aggravated - on the arc car holds quite bad!

In the snow, the situation with the handling is better, but there are problems with acceleration. On the asphalt - at the level of middling. It is curious that the cloak of spikes is almost not heard, but the protector itself suits in the entire range of speeds.

That's how these tires unequivocally pleased, so it is resistance to shocks: in this discipline - the third place.

With normal quality, these tires would certainly be able to make decent competition to the leaders, but on the basis of our test we would not recommend using these tires on machines without electronic stabilization systems.

According to the final assessment tires dunlop. Only 0.1 points are inferior to Goodyear tires. Nothing amazing: the Dunlop brand today is a goodyear concern today, and the Dunlop Ice Touch and Goodyear UltraGrip Ice Arctic tires were developed by the same command of engineers. Different drawings are different, but everything else is the depth of the grooves, the hardness of rubber and spikes is the same. Unfortunately, the same and quality of misappropriate: the spikes in Dunlop tires were also planted deeper than necessary. By the way, tires are made on the same factory in Poland.

Similar and problems with Ice controllability: in the transverse direction, the Dunlop bus is kept worse than in the longitudinal. Move the car along the winding track is difficult due to sharp, unexpected breakdowns in sliding.

But on the snow - the minimum brake path! At the same time, overclocking and indicators of controllability are the same "sluggish", as in the ice.

But on the dry coating - the minimum braking path and the maximum speed of the "rearrangement". The car clearly and quickly reacts to the turns of the steering wheel, which for winter tires Big ramp! True, there is a side effect - increased rigidity when passing small irregularities.

Aggressive, cut-down tread-shaped wavy lamellas - and lined up in 14 spike lines. But the spikes are ordinary - with cylindrical inserts, and the tread rubber is not so "tenacious", like competitors, about which indirectly testifies its increased hardness - by 20% more compared to Nokian tires.

And as a result - very modest coupling properties both on ice and in the snow. Controllability also leaves much to be desired (the speed in the rotations limit the unpleasant slides of the front axle).

Here on the snow-water kash, Bridgestone tires pop up later than others. Yes, and on the asphalt work canceled: the reaction on the "reinstall" is such fast and accurate, as if the car "wound" is not in winter, but in all-season tires.

And most of all the impenetrable sidewalls were pleased. But here a compromise: a stronger sidewall is also more rigid, so Bridgestone tires do not better affect the smoothness of the course.

Bridgestone Ice Cruiser 7000 tires will certainly find their poor buyer, especially in the outback - where the tires often change not due to the wear of the tread, but because of the "samples" obtained in the pits.

Back at the stage of "static" measurements, we suggested that Hankook tires in this test are extra: Most of the spikes barely protrudes over the tread level. There are those that are towering only by 0.3 mm! On the ice, such spikes, of course, do not work - the car slightly slides in braking, and in turns. But at the same time, it receives a decent assessment for the reliability of the management: Yes, the car slides and the whole thing goes slowly, but the limit for coupling properties is well felt, breakdowns are soft, there is a good balance of demolition and drift ... it happens.

However, Hankook tires could not shine in the snow, where the spikes no longer play a big role.

The protector does not cope with drainage functions - on Shuga (snow-water mixture) Hankook tires pop up before others. They work badly on wet asphalt (the brake path is too large) - and only on dry asphalt is increasingly less in order. But this is not enough to recommend the Hankook Winter I * Pike tires as winter. True, there is an argument that for many sounds stronger than the arguments about safety: the Hankook tires are exactly twice cheaper than the Nokian tires.

Despite the tread drawing, the Nokian HakkaPeliitta 4 tires, the Russian tires KAMA EURO-519 cannot yet compete with imported counterparts. Longitudinal coupling properties are encouraged on the snow, but on the control charter all hopes disappear. "Squate" the car in turn is difficult, and therefore it is necessary to reduce the speed before each of them.

Sad painting and ice: Sliphes are also poorly predicted and poorly controlled. Yes, and with braking on ice there are problems.

The reason seems to be the same as in the case of Hankook tires: insufficient speech of spikes over the surface of the tread. On average - 0.8 mm: this departure is not enough for a good "hooking" on the ice.

On the asphalt tires operate at the average level. When performing sharp maneuvers of the reaction to the wheel "smeared". And let the spikes be ridiculously annoyed by the Cocan, the protector buzzes is pretty. And on the irregularities these tires are one of the toughest.

Yes, Kama Euro-519 tires occupied the last place in our test. But if you remember about the price and the stellar composition of the participants, then this is not just the last, but the honorable place. And if the manufacturer puts the quality control of the quality of the misappropriation, then you can see, it will be possible to qualify for higher and no less honorable places.

And you yourself keep stronger, both hands! Harry! It was frightened by ticks, and Uncle Vanya, though, tries to stronger grab the spike for his "sting".

But the experience we have! Long ago, when in the winter we jumped from Finland to Germany by car, the "shirt" in "Roseovka", we were not allowed German border guards: either leaving where they came from, or buy and put the tires without spikes, or ... then we are not yet They knew that in Germany was introduced a bother on the spikes! I had to pull the "nails" from all four wheels, and the wheels were rather big - we had Land Rover Discovery! Thank God, now the task is different: we need to check how tightly spikes are sitting in the protective, so that with the help of ticks and a dynamometer, we will roll out of each tire only in a pair of spikes. We have easily coped with other tires, but CONTICECTACT tires do not want to part with spikes.

It turned out that the effort with which you can pull the spike from the tread, lies in the range from 3.5 kgf at Michelin tires up to 7.0 kgf at Nokian. With the exception of the ContilCecontact tires, which applies a new spike installation technology: they are covered with a special composition that works like glue. When Uncle Vanya still pulled a spike, there were traces of rubber, and the dynamometer recorded an effort of 20 and 25 kgf for two spikes. Approximately four times more than "on average by hospital"!

And with Nokian tires, the incident came out: on one of the tires we found three spikes without carbide inserts. Nokian's commentary Specialists sounded like this:

This year we changed the supplier of spikes, and, apparently, he made a marriage. We'll figure out.

In Tiguan, I wound circles on the run of controllability, and Uncle Vanya with Andrei Mokhov worked on Volvo V70: the acceleration time and the brake path on the ice were measured. Front-wheel drive Volvo with disconnected rear brakes allows you to make measurements, changing only the front wheels, and it helped do not miss the weather.

On each set, they make six to eight braking, as many accelerations - for a set of statistics. And periodically repeat measurements on tires, which were the first (we call them basic) to then adjust the results, taking into account the changes in the weather and the state of the ice. On a long and wide track, these conditions are not changed so quickly, especially since the uncle Vanya slows down every time and accelerates in a new place, but I have - literally with each round. First very much. Soon the trajectories appear notch from spikes, and the clutch coefficient is growing - the circle time is improved. Then, the rotations are increasing the number of icy thickens of ice crumb, and the time on the "basic" tires becomes worse again, that is, it increases ... As a result, taking into account the correction using basic tires in this exercise, the advantage of Continental ContilCecontact 4x4 tires was recorded. But the spikes in these tires protrude from the tread is the strongest - on average by 1.6 mm, and individual inserts stick out by 1.9 mm. In Finland, it is prohibited - according to the rules aimed at reducing damage to road surface, the spikes should not perform by more than 1.2 mm. We have such standards only in the project - if they are approved, item will appear in the technical regulations: "The protector of the spike beyond the tread is 1.2 ± 0.3 mm." In the meantime - at least go to the sports sevenmillimeter spike - no words say. This uses Continental. True, it is not clear why others do not use - fear the deterioration of "asphalt" characteristics?

Shadrichyev and Mokhov outweigh the equipment on Tiguan and again go on an ice track - now in order to simulate an emergency, or rather - an attempt to drive around a sudden obstacle to braking. The car accelerates to 30 km / h, Uncle Vanya hits the brake pedal and simultaneously turns the steering wheel on the floor. Our measurements have shown that on Michelin or Continental tires to avoid an unpleasant collision with the "deer" easier than, say, on the Yokohama or Bridgestone tires. And how do Nokian tires come?

After the snowfall, we were able to measure the dispersal dynamics of the car in deep snow - better than others "row" tires Nokian, Nordman and Yokohama

Representatives of the company work in neighboring boxes and the process of our tests do not interfere. So I approached the question - and caused a considerable surprise:

Nokian on ice is worse than Continental? Can not be! We this year upgraded the HakkaPeliitta 7 tires, taking into account the recommendations of Porsche engineers. Outwardly, they are the same, but in the design of something they changed.

Finns are asked if it is possible to drive with us. Mika, a local test seat, I am right away - and we are going on the "Ice" manageability track. First, a pair of circles on the Continental tires, then on Nokian. Mika is perplexed: the results really not in favor of Finnish tires.

Now the same exercises, but on the rolled snow. Here the spikes are no longer a defining factor - and hegemony tires Continental comes end. Michelin tires are won on the braking - Gislaved, when the "deer" is preferable to Pirelli. And on the run of controllability, Nokian tires behave better than others: the best time of the circle and the maximum score for the convenience of controlling the car. Eh, still ESP on Tiguan turned off completely, otherwise you can go as if with a strict instructor in a driving school ...

The coating here also changes, but in a different way: a rinse is formed. Five or six more circles - and I am going to change the tires, and at this time the random rust with a wide knife scraper leaves the track - and the coating as a new one. Immediately on the track of the handling, I met living, not virtual deer. Fortunately, it happened already on the way out when I dropped the speed, - six deer blocked the whole road! If they went to the track with two turns earlier, without the victims, it would hardly cost.

It remains to evaluate the permeability. The Finns themselves do not conduct such tests, so it's not easy to find a suitable platform with moderately deep snow. Or impassable virgin, or perfectly cleared roads. Found a platform on a lake with a layer of snow about 30 cm. Even Tiguan - by the most fog lights. We crawl along the virgin on each set of tires - with a slip, insert, that is, on the verge of slipping ... in the trunk of the shovel, and in touch the duty pickup with a cable. His help was needed by us just once, when Tiguan was on Pirelli tires: he could not get back on a rut, which he had just paved on the same tires. And this, by the way, one of the main criteria for the assessment of tires from the point of view of passability: the car is obliged to leave from there, where he slowly, without prior acceleration and drove himself.

The next day, nature helped us to make measurements that we have long dreamed of. Snowfall passed - and test roads were covered by about a 15-centimeter layer of snow. And now we can evaluate the dynamics of overclocking after the snowfall when the roads are not yet cleared. Five or six starts on Volvo with a slip on each set of tires - and find out that the car is best accelerated on the vehicle on Nokian tires, Nordman and Yokohama. And worse - on Michelin tires.

After the tests, carefully inspect the tires and count the loss of spikes. A clear thing, minus those two that we ourselves and out to test the tests. Losses were small - one-two spikes per set. And the Continental Tires, Nokian, Nordman and that we are especially pleased, Kama did not lose any spike. And only condition tire pirelli - How thunder in February. On one of the four tires, we counted 21 empty "hole", and there were 32 of them! Is it worth buying studded tires if at the end of winter they will turn into immaculate?

Obvious to S. winter testsWe took a pause to spring to continue the tests on the Summer Polygon of the company Nokian Tyres.

Actually, we could spend "asphalt" tests and in the Dmitrov Auto Polygona, and in Tampere they went mainly because it is also possible to evaluate tires to Slazhening - "Pop-up" on the Slow-Water Cashe. Phenomenon, by the way, dangerous and common. In the spring, our road builders are often absorbed by the wet snow from the borders for the middle of the road so that it melted faster under the wheels of cars, and if the layer of such a "liquid" snow is only two centimeters, the tires lose contact with the road already at a speed of 37 km / h - the car becomes uncontrollable! It would be nice for these numbers to remember both road builders.

It is at the speed of 37 km / h "pop up" the Nokian and Nordman tires. And others lose reliable contact with the road even earlier - Yokohama does not allow to accelerate and up to 34 km / h. It would seem that the difference is small, but in real conditions This means that the car on some tires in turn only slightly slip, and on others - the risks to be on the oncoming lane.

The following exercises we spend mainly for those who win in large cities, and travels mainly on asphalt.

Braking from 80 km / h on wet asphalt, from 100 km / h on dry, "Perestrovka" - and once again it becomes clear that the tires brought on slippery coatings on the asphalt work badly. Take at least braking: if on summer tires, according to our measurements (AR No. 17, 2008), Tiguan stops from 100 km / h 42.3 meters, then on the winter tires the brake path on the asphalt increases on average ten meters!

And finally comfort. First - acoustic. I support the same speed on the "credit" sites of the road, and sitting next to Andrei Mokhov holds a sound meter in his hands. However, it is clear without the noiseomer that the louder of other Continental and Nokian tires. But even these "loud" tires are not annoyed. And the most quiet in the test was Russian tires Kama-515.

And on the track with artificial irregularities (asphalt ledgers, swallowed wells, etc.) We found out that the best smooth course provides Michelin tires, and Pirelli tires, Kama and Nordman are harsh.

The greatest weight in the final assessment has "ice" properties (35%): the ice was and remains the most dangerous coating on winter Road. In second place in the snow (25%), then separate lines of Patency (10%) and Slaryning (10%), brake properties on the wet asphalt (10%), and five percent we are distributed to comfort and behavior on dry asphalt. Favorites are defined, and they scored an equal number of points. Nokian HakkaPeliitta 7, Continental Contilcecontact 4x4 and Gislaved Nord Frost 5 - Choose any, you won't lose. Nordman 4 tires will be quite a reasonable choice, which are noticeably cheaper, but according to the test, the leaders are inferior only to a little bit. Pirelli Winter Carving Edge is potentially good winter tires, but they summarize the quality of the misapproving. Japanese tires in another company may have looked better, but on the background of "Grand" look pale. It is curious that in the final rating and Bridgestone, and Yokohama lost domestic tires Kama-515.

Or maybe these spikes? Maybe all-wheel drive car, and even with off-road deposits, it will be enough winter tires without spikes? Or even spend the whole year on all-season? Answers to these questions you will find autores in the next issue.

Test results are shown in tabular and graphical form.

With such long spikes, no ice is afraid! Their work is felt immediately, without any measuring equipment. Including on the rumor - "diamond" spikes with a loud crunch vague into the coating, leaving on its surface 10 rows of deep "scars". The working part of the spike performs over the protector on average by 1.6 mm, and some "attachments" - as much as 1.9 mm! When braking from 50 km / h, the Continental bus wins the nearest competitors 3.6 meters - count, the body of a small car! At the Ice Handling Controlnessability of the Slip Minimal, the control over the car is magnificent ...

But in the snow, the ContilCecontAct tire loses leadership, although the behavior of the car remains clear and predictable. And it is not a barrier to these tires - in deep snow, they work well in the dash.

The main losses are on the asphalt, especially on dry: with a sharp braking or rebuilding in another row of tires literally smeared on asphalt. Well, at least that the new technology fixing spikes excludes their losses even after the deliberately aggressive ride with the thoughts.

After the Swedish company Gislaved passed under the control of the Continental concern, the products under the Gislaved brand were expected to be attributed to the so-called second line

Slightly easier, just more accessible than the Continental tires. But this year, Gislaved Nord Frost 5 tires were in our ranking on one step with the leaders of the First Line. Yes, the technology of "pasted" spikes is not applied here, and the achievements on the ice are not so impressive as the CONTICECTACT 4x4 tires. But the main advantage of the tires gislaved.

Excellent balance between "winter" and "asphalt" qualities. A little inferior to the ContilCecontact 4x4 tires on the ice - which is not surprising with a more modest speech of spikes! - Tires Nord Frost 5 provide the minimum brake path in the snow. And on the track "Snow" manageability give the car extremely understandable and even gambling.

In the deep snow, the gislaved tires work well on the verge of breakdown, but with the beginning of the slip. And on the snow-water caress there are too many competitors.

On the wet asphalt - the minimum brake path! And on dry coverage, everything is not bad: confident rebuilding from a number of in a row, confident braking.

And these tires are one of the most comfortable - soft and silent.

Excellent option for winter operating In large cities.

Winter tires Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7 In the "crossover" dimension 215/65 R16, it was not so confident as in the old years. However, it did not prevent them from splitting the first place with Continental and Gislaved tires.

On the ice, rhombid spikes work well in the longitudinal direction, but pass positions in turns: slides are stretched and sometimes with difficulty control, even despite the support of an inappropriate stabilization system.

But on the snow - the perfect control over the car and as a result - the best time of passing the winding track. And in the loose snow of the Nokian tire in his element - the car is very confidently pierced at virgin!

The protector also copes very well and with a tap from the spread of contact of the snow-water porridge.

On the wet asphalt, the result is medium, but on the dry, like the Continental tires, problems are already manifested. The soft protector "develops", because of which the braking path grows and the speed of "rearrangement" falls.

In terms of comfort - too far the best way. Although the spikes and zokat are slightly quieter than the "outstanding" spikes of tires Continental, but the passages of seams and joints are accompanied by a more notable vibroacoustic accompaniment.

However, the spikes hold well and without glue!

The Nordman bus test finish came with a minimal lag behind the troika leaders. Nothing amazing: Figure of the tread - like Nokian Hakkapeliitta 4 tires, which shone several years ago in our tests. And the Nordman tires are produced on the same equipment.

And in some exercises on the ice of the Nordman tire even won from Nokian, but in the end they still lost - including due to sharp disruptions to slip on the run of controllability.

In the snow, the car behaves better - quickly and accurately responds to controls on the verge and beyond slides, although the coupling properties are not the highest.

Acceleration with slipping in deep snow is just as effective as on Nokian tires, but the movement of the latitude requires caution. After the stop did not immediately manage to get back in their own rut.

To the resistance of Slaryning - no complaints. And on the asphalt of the Nordman tires work well - they allowed you to perform a "rearrangement" with a better speed.

Yes, yes, after driving in the snow and on the ice - without races on asphalt! - Four Pirelli tires lost 32 spikes! It was especially distinguished by one of the tires, on which we did not charge twenty spikes!

It is a pity, because in the ride disciplines of the tires managed to show quite good results. And in the snow Pirelli - in the leaders. True, the expert was not easy to achieve a high result on the winding snowy track due to early slides. The usual driver, and even on the car without ESP, hardly please such a sweeping "figure skating".

In the side of the tire Pirelli, we were convinced of deep snow - at some point the car stops and backwards before either step.

On the asphalt Winter Tires Pirelli showed themselves more well.

If it were not for the catastrophic loss of thorns, we would include the Pirelli Winter Carving EDGE tires to reasonable acquisitions. In the meantime, we will wait for changes in the technology of misappropriate - and the chance to make sure that the result is achieved.

Michelin tires Do not switch to "faceted" spikes. It seems in vain. On the ice, they work perfectly in the transverse direction: they are easy and pleasant to drive a car on the highway, and in the details of the obstacles - and at all best result! But they are badly clinging for the ice during acceleration and braking, giving way to the Russian tires of Kama with their primitive four-row obepovka!

In the snow, the situation is better, but this is true only for the rolled snow. When his layer reaches 15 cm, the situation changes dramatically - when overclocking, Michelin has already loses to competitors.

And on the asphalt - "Breakdown and Shatting": on the wet coverage - the maximum braking path, and the situation is noticeably better on the dry. But already throws handling - "Remisting" car performs with Lenza.

But with comfort, everything is unambiguous - the tires are soft and very soft.

As a result - not the most stable, but very comfortable tires. And spikes, unlike tires Pirelli, are not scattered, although we pulled them with a little effort.

Tires are not the first freshness, and we did not wait for the revelations. And they took them because they simply did not find more modern russian models dimension 215/65 R16. Rubber is tougher than imported competitors, and steel hulls of spikes have already been covered with a yellow rust challenge.

But the first departure to the ice - and the tires of Kama "circle" on braking Bridgestone. And when overclocking - also Michelin! On the Ice Circle - the third result in the "Absolute"! Not bad tires led themselves on the run of controllability. Here you have rusty spikes.

When overclocking and braking in the snow, Kama bus again ahead of the Japanese. And only on the track of manageability, the car began to break into a skid too dramatically.

In the loose snow tire, Kama does not work very confidently, but helps slip.

Another surprise is a good slohening resistance. Better only Nokian and Nordman. And on the asphalt, the results are good. At the "Rearrangement", the car reacts to the first impulse - as if it is on summer tires, but with the beginning of slides, the grip with asphalt worsens too sharply.

Kama tires were expected to be among the toughest. And unexpectedly - the most quiet. At least, according to our noiseomer, although they are "singing", they are not quieter than Michelin or Bridgestone. Moreover, a higher voice.

Tires are quite affordable, and judging by our test, this is not the case when the miser pays twice.

Yokohama IG35 tires appeared last year, and, frankly, we expected more from them. Alas: ordinary coupling properties on ice in the longitudinal direction and frankly low - in the transverse one. The car reluctantly reacts to the turns of the steering wheel, so that in the critical situation on the garbage expense, the driver will have to be disadvantaged. And on the ice controllability of the tire, the car endow the car such insufficient turning, that even after a sharp gas discharge, he continues treacherously sliding outwards.

On the snow. On the contrary, the tires are poorly kept in the longitudinal direction, and in the transverse work better.

In the deep snow Yokohama "rowing" confidently - and with slipping, and in a latitude.

On the snow-water kash, the tires were flattened, although with such a raspberry "fir tree" we expected a more efficient removal from the spot of contact.

Here on the asphalt Japanese tires in their elements - they are especially good when braking on dry coverage: with a speed of 100 km / h reduce the braking path as much as five meters, if compared with Continental tires.

Comfort at the average level, and in general, the average tires with a balance of characteristics shifted towards asphalt.

Bridgestone Ice Cruiser 7000, it seems to be created specifically for Russia: In the Scandinavian countries, Bridgestone offers another model - NORANZA, which, by agreement "Off-Take", produces Nokian Tyres at its Finnish factory. And if the NORANZA tires in tests conducted by our European colleagues are confidently compete with Nokian and Continental tires, then IceCruiser 7000 can only take place with Russian tires.

In acceleration and braking on the ice - the worst results. Not everything is smooth and on the manageability track: slides begin early, and you do not know what to expect: demolition of the front axle or rear drift.

And in the snow Bridgestone - in the laggards. On the track manageability, control slip is very difficult - and, even despite the insurance of ESP, a couple of times still had to "lean" to a snowdrift.

In the deep snow, Bridgestone tires work well, they do not work well, but they are not friends with slipping. With wet snow tires coped not bad. But even better they perform on the asphalt, both on dry and wet. The car slows down well and confidently circles the obstacle.

Despite the last place in the final protocol, you should not talk about the complete uselessness of the BRIDGESTONE ICE Cruiser 7000 tires. This is another option of winter tires for large cities, but, being on ice or in the snow, you need to be extremely generally!

Everywhere the nicky climb passionately wanting to sell something and do not care and do the truth and on the consumer and in general on everything except themselves.
Sick of you!
Conti and Gislaved are made on some plants in Germany and personally, I do not see any difference between them when comparing similar models. To compare NF5 with ContiCecontActAct to me more difficult, the first stage was produced in 2000x and today it is difficult to find it, while the second is an actual model that I did not try, and to compare should be fresh impressions. I can only express relative to the comparison of NF5 with many other tires that I tried and above all with Hakka. So, in my opinion, NF5 easily plugs Hakku 4 and Hakku 5 (i.e., those models that were produced simultaneously with NF3 NF5, and I did not try the 7th and 8th, I can't say anything). Hakka 4 is inferior to NF5 fatal on any types of coatings, except snow where it goes comparable. Quickly wear out, Krenovo holds a grip on the asphalt (not so much bad, but let's say mediocrely, which you can't tell about the NF5, which I mad in the heat of 2010 is not worse than good summer rubber). In the summer it is possible to ride in the hackke4, but the properties are much worse than summer rubber, it is trite "floats." It is worn in summer very quickly (however, like the NF5). Hakka 5 is better. Actually now she is standing for me, but only because it got a gift. In the snow and ice, the road keeps the same way to NF5, the difference is difficult to catch. On the asphalt noticeably worse than the NF5, but much better than Hakki 4. Let's see how much it passes. So far, only 2 seasons, but a lot of resources. NF5 for comparison I go to 4 seasons in winter and 1 in the summer (when less4mm remains). Hakku5 in the summer has not yet chased because it's a pity just. As 4mm will remain so easy for the summer (according to the current law it will be necessary to upgrade the remains of thorns - do not believe the law in primaryistonics :)). On the NF5 in winter jumped the championships Snow brushrs at speeds more than 100kmch, drove 160 on the fresh thin snow, never at the same time I did not get into the difficult situation, I did not see unexpected behavior. Moreover, the stock has always turned out to be more than I expected. On Hakka 4, the futility came into unexpected unpleasant situations in some time and after feared to ride it so quickly. Hakka5, it seems almost as well, but everyone to slip on the snow and ice, as it seemed to me, begins before, although everything seems to be predictable. There is no apparently the stock that was on the NF5. About the rest of the brands - the Russian tires do not at all in any comparison even with Hakka 4. I have not traveled on it for a long time, it can now better, but earlier the difference was Pts obvious. "Joint" brands are much better, but even to Hakki4 they do not reach. You can ride for Ross rubber, only very careful. .. :) But to me to the depths of the soul, it will always be not clear how you can take this ... just 20-30% cheaper not that top, but "non-stove" products. Is it really a wretched and dangerous ride, regardless of speed, are worth these 20-30%? Bridge Winter did not try, summer B391, which took place with one of the cars, with ConticeCoContact (about premium and not worth talking) is not a comparison. All these attempts to save on wear at all costs several times did not cost me a large road accident, especially on a wet road, when people using normal rubber braked sharply ahead (far or close) with BF Goodrich, which och loves the jeapari, was similar, but better than B391, perhaps, also got cheap model (I do not remember the name). Kumho is the same thing that B391, walks for a long time, but the grip from the continge does not compare. : Hancuck did not try. It was a pity that did not happen normally try Michelin and Dunlop (nor summer). In someone else's car, it is not necessary to drive any rubber to the car itself, you will not become. Several man, "able to ride", in my opinion, quite praised the bridge potency for the summer, but I did not have a chance to try it. Another person who tried a bunch of rubber on the nature of the activity I assured me that very good uncomfortable models of Japanese Toyo (I do not remember the model). They still cost much more cheaper than the promoted brands, but they are going to do not worse than the potency, which he also pp.

Test car: Ford Focus.

Currently, the number of spikes in the tire is not legally limited. More precisely, there are no restrictions if the product is tested by an independent inspection organization, which confirmed that the damage caused by the road liner does not exceed the permissible border. If the test passed successfully, the manufacturer has the right to determine the type of spikes itself and their number.

Another option is to abandon the test and use the maximum allowable amount of spikes, that is, 50 pieces per 1 meter circumference; For the size used in this test, the number of spikes is slightly less than a hundred. Only three of the twelve manufacturers whose products participated in the test, chose this option.

An increase in the number of spikes improves the clutch on the ice. This is a logical conclusion that is confirmed by the test results almost without exception. However, many spikes do not guarantee success in the test, it only creates an additional clutch on the ice.
A large number of spikes usually means more high level Noise, and this is one of the most annoying features of the tire. When driving on asphalt, spikes may worsen handling, stability and braking.

The clutch on ice is created due to the fact that the tire is pushing the surface of the ice. This requires a certain pressure on the ice. A larger number of spikes creates less pressure on each spike separately. In cold weather, when the ice becomes more hard, the tire with a smaller number of spikes creates a better clutch.

Studded tires.

A few years ago, Nokian Tyres struck everyone, presenting a tire with 190 spikes - it was 50-100% more than what the then tire market was used. Since then, Nokian wins one ice test after another; Be that as it may, her separation from competitors is shortened.

This year, Continental also introduced a tire with the maximum number of spikes - 190. It is not difficult to guess where German shinniki appealed for inspiration when it was about the number of spikes, but the result turned out to be otned.

Hankook ranks third in the number of spikes - 170. The South Korean manufacturer has spent years on research and development, and it's nice to look at the result of his work - good winter tires from Asia. 10 years ago, Korean tires were honored except that a sympathetic smile, but now Hankook erase smirks even with the people of the largest European competitors.

A large group of manufacturers preferred to use about 130 spikes. Goodyear, Bridgestone and Pirelli are well-known manufacturers, and it is obvious that their tires will be selected for the dough. As an alternative to flagship products, the tests were included in the test - Sava and Dunlop, as well as the old brand of Nokian, always enjoyed by great success - Nordman.

Michelin, Gislaved and Chinese Lin¬glong decided to use less than 100 spikes, and this means that they did not have to undergo a road test. The first two are premium tires, but it seems that other characteristics do not compensate for weak clutch on ice caused by a small number of spikes.

Linglong has already participated in Tekniikan Maailma tests earlier, this is one of the most successful winter models of Chinese production.

Inspected tires take a challenge.

Inspected tires do not need to worry about the number of spikes, but the absence of the latter has to compensate for in other way. What creates a number of other problems. A set of tools for creating a reliable clutch on ice is very limited. In most cases, it includes the development of new materials to make a rubber mixture as soft as possible, and improving the tread pattern.

But if the rubber mixture is too soft, it will lead to new problems, the most serious of which are deterioration in the clutch on a wet road, unstable handling and low wear resistance.

All last years, leading places in the tests of untreated tires occupied Nokian and Continental. Even without spikes, their tires are an amazing clutch on the ice, but the reverse side of this medal is that buyers have to put up with sluggish handling on the asphalt or choose the tires of other manufacturers.

GoodYear When developing non-shredded tires, focused on the controllability on the asphalt, going to minimal compromises for the sake of improving the safety qualities on the snow and on the ice. Michelin always chooses balanced characteristics, without outstanding parties, but without obvious problems. Pirelli and Bridgestone are old brands that have long known to consumers, but the properties of their models range from the test to the test.

We have included in this test two products of lower price categories: Junior brand Nokian - Nordman, and tires of the Taiwan manufacturer Nankang, famous for the release of good summer tires. Let's see if the winter tires of this brand will be able to compare with their European competitors.

In the test of this year Participated twelve models of different price categoriesAnd some of them demonstrated certain flaws in some areas. Some tires were clearly designed for harsh winters, because of which the manufacturers had to donate handling on asphalt. Others preferred to create a product, which is equally good under any conditions, but at no reason. Of course, a tire, which is not able to cope at least with one test, is a bad choice, especially if something better can be found for the same price.

Will winter tires wear?

The bus wednesday is overwhelmed by the most diverse information on how different types of winter tires quickly wear out and how it affects their grip. Some say that the unwanted tires are twice as quickly studded. Others assure that due to wear of spikes after a couple of years, studded tires loses the clutch much fasterly untouched.

For dough on wear resistance, we chose six different brands The last four years, four studded and two unsuccessful. During this test, the tires had to drive 15,000 kilometers on pure asphalt in cold weather. It is approximately equivalent to two winter seasons. Most of the route took place on public roads, and the test included hundreds of controlled stops, braking and accelerations at urban speed - to reproduce driving conditions in the urban environment.

For the test, three cars were used, which moved a column one by one route, with the same conditions, with a constant shift of drivers. Two tires of each model were taken, a rotation of the front and rear wheels. Thus, by the end of the test, each model made an equal distance on the front and on the rear axle, and was controlled by each of the three drivers. Thus, the same conditions were provided for all tires, and the differences between cars, driving conditions and the characters of drivers did not affect the result.

In addition, the tires passed test tests on the ice at the very beginning of the test and every 5,000 mileage kilometers. These tests were carried out on covered rollers under the same conditions. An interesting result is both studded and non-shredted tires, the grip decreased evenly throughout the test, and in 15,000 kilometers amounted to 80% of the initial one. The grip decreased approximately equally in all brands, and on this indicator of the tire retained their initial positions relative to each other.
This is a good news because it confirms that the results of tire tests are applicable not only for new, but also for worn tires.

Of course, all participants in the test were some differences in wear resistance. The table applied below is the depth of the tread and the calculated service life of the tires, to the depth of the tread 3 mm.

Historically, Michelin has a reputation of the most wear-resistant tire, and it seems that this reputation was confirmed in this test. It should be noted that the service life of the tire specified in this test is calculated; That is, it may differ from the real, taking into account the difference of cars, roads and driving style.

It should also be noted that all tires, with the exception of Michelin and Goodyear, both studded and untouchable, weathered approximately the same, about 2 mm. Only in an awaited Continental protector is 1.5 mm, as in Michelin, but considering the smaller initial tread depth, this model has reached a minimum depth of 3 mm faster.

The reverse side of wear resistance is a clutch, more precisely, its disadvantage. And the choice in this case remains for the buyer: whether he wants to buy the best grip more often or the worst - less often.

Driving on ice and in the snow: This Nokian model is the best tire on ice from all that is on sale at present. The grip during overclocking and braking is great, the tires do not go out of control even in extreme conditions. Among other things, this model offers a reliable clutch and controllability in the snow.
Driving on asphalt: On a clean road it becomes noticeable that this tire is designed for winter. She lacks adhesion when braking and maneuvering, but at its very nature, this tire has a calm character, so that it will not give you an unpleasant surprise in the form of a sudden clutch loss.
Efficiency and comfort: This model is no more noisy than any average studded tire, although you have to hear the sound of spikes. Rolling resistance on a good level for the studded bus.

Driving on ice and in the snow: In Continental balanced running quality. She has good grip On ice, and good transverse clutch makes it easily controlled. It also works well in the snow and quickly reacts to the turns of the steering wheel.
Driving on asphalt: the developers did not forget about the driving qualities for warm weather. This tire has a clutch on a wet road above average and good handling. On a dry road, turning a little slowed down, like most winter tires, but this model will not present a unpleasant surprise to the driver, while leaving the drift.
Efficiency and comfort: Noise level and rolling resistance at the middle level for the studded bus of this class.

Driving on ice and in the snow: Hankook has a good clutch on ice, these tires give a feeling secure driving Even in the most sophisticated conditions and in extreme situations. In the snow, the tire behaves logical, providing smooth transmission of the steering force. Although this model has not previously occupied high positions in tests, it pleases a balanced behavior on the winter road.
Driving on asphalt: Good braking on a wet road, but, nevertheless, the tire seems too soft, it slowly reacts to the change of the course. Fortunately, the rear tires, always retain the clutch with the road, so that the surprises will not be presented to you.
Efficiency and comfort: Tread noise and spikes at the middle level for the tire of this class. Hankook earned a separate praise for the lowest rolling resistance among all tested studded tires.

Driving on ice and in the snow: Goodyear produces high-quality tires, although they do not always occupy the first places in tests. This model has good braking on ice and especially in the snow, but the transverse clutch is not quite optimal. Nevertheless, the tires always remain under control, even in extreme conditions. In the snow, this model behaves very calmly.
Driving on asphalt: On the Asphalt Goodyear behaves better than most winter studded tires. Good braking and clear handling allow you to feel confident when maneuvering.
Efficiency and Comfort : both noise level and rolling resistance at most studded tires.
Per:
  • Brake and thrust on the snow.
  • Balanced behavior.
Vs:

Evaluation: ★★★★ 8.5 points.

Driving on ice and in the snow: pirelli has excellent clutch on ice, light and clear gear of the steering effort. The rear tires are sometimes quite easily losing the clutch, but then also quickly and easily return control over the road. Pirelli works well in the snow, although here it has a slightly worse grip than most studded tires.
Driving on asphalt: On the wet road Pirelli - one of the best studded tires on the market. When maneuvering, it retains reliable clutch and quickly responds to the turns of the steering wheel. On a dry road, it also demonstrates excellent handling, but the brake path becomes too long.
Efficiency and Comfort : rolling resistance at the average level, but noise from spikes is quite noticeable.
Per:
  • Clutch on ice;
  • Handling in winter weather.
Vs:
  • Noise.
Evaluation: ★★★★ 8.5 points.

Driving on ice and in the snow: short brake path on ice, pretty good thrust. This model has sufficient transverse clutch, although control is not too confident, especially in extreme conditions. Sometimes the rear tires are too easy to lose the clutch on the snow. Nevertheless, they pretty quickly restore control over the road.
Driving on asphalt: On the asphalt, this tire turned out to be one of the best. It demonstrates stable and easy handling and clear steering.
Efficiency and comfort: round resistance at a good level, and in addition, for the studded model, this tire is very quiet.
Per:
  • Behavior on asphalt;
  • Noise level.
Vs:
  • Uncertain behavior under certain conditions.
Evaluation: ★★★★ 8.4 points.

Driving on ice and in the snow: this tire has amazing grip on the snow and a good sense of steering. It behaves calmly and provides confident handling even in extreme conditions. On the ice of this tire lack clutch, the brake path is long. When maneuvering, the clutch limit is also quickly achieved.
Driving on asphalt: Good grip when braking on a wet road. When maneuvering it is felt that the tire is soft, however, due to a reliable clutch, control remains logical and predictable. On the dry road Gislaved - a typical slow winter tire, but the clutch remains reliable.
Efficiency and comfort: a small amount of spikes makes the gislaved rather quiet bus. But the resistance to rolling is one of the highest in this test.
Per:
  • Running quality in the snow;
  • Clutch on a wet road.
Vs:
  • The clutch on the ice is quite mediocre for the premium tire.
Evaluation: ★★★★ 8.3 points.

Driving on ice and in the snow: This MICHELIN model behaves on the winter road exclusively calmly. Unfortunately, the front tires are insufficient clutch on ice, which is why the braking path is quite long. In addition, when maneuvering the tire is often lacking transverse clutch. The clutch on the snow is a little better, but still does not reach the level of the best tires.
Driving on asphalt: The brake path on the pure asphalt is short. This model demonstrates confident maneuvering on the asphalt, while its rear tires retain the clutch even in the most difficult conditions. Nevertheless, the transfer of the steering force is too slow.
Efficiency and comfort: resistance to rolling is hardly not the highest in the test, but thanks to a small amount of spikes, the noise level is rather low.
Per:
  • Calm handling under any conditions;
  • Low noise.
Vs:
  • The clutch on ice is worse than most of the premium tires.
Evaluation: ★★★ 7.9 points.

Driving on ice and in the snow: when overclocking and braking on ice, the clutch is not bad, the tire behaves calmly in extreme conditions, although at times it lacks longitudinal clutch. The grip on the snow is very mediocre, but the calm nature of the tire does not allow the driver to lose control over the road.
Driving on asphalt: the grip on dry and wet road is quite mediocre. Good grip when braking. With rapid maneuvering, the tire behaves quite sluggish, the reaction to the turns of the steering wheel is slowed.
Efficiency and comfort: average noise levels that do not cause special complaints. This tire has the highest rolling resistance from all participating in the test.
Per:
Good grip on ice.
Vs:
Mediocre grip on dry and wet road;
Rolling resistance.
Evaluation: ★★★ 7.8 points.

Driving on ice and in the snow: clutch on ice at an acceptable level, the tire has a rather short brake path and a good time of circle passing. In extreme conditions, a shortage of clutch can suddenly be discovered, especially on the rear wheels. In the snow, the tire behaves quite unpredictably, sometimes it is difficult to keep it under control.
Driving on asphalt: on the Asphalt SAVA works well. The braking path is short, the tire quickly responds to the turns of the steering wheel. Unfortunately, in the test dough, this model sometimes behaved quite unpredictable.
Efficiency and comfort: Resistance to rolling and noise at the middle level. Ship's noise is noticeable, but not higher than most other studded models.
Per:

  • Braking on a wet road.

Vs:

  • Grip on the snow; Handling in the snow.

Evaluation: ★★★ 7.8 points.

Driving on ice and in the snow: The previous successful model of Nokian demonstrates how much technology has advanced. Nordman is still suitable for the operation of the winter tire, although in terms of the level of clutch for new items, she is no longer sang. On the slippery road, the tire behaves calmly, although it is not worth expecting too much from it.
Driving on asphalt: the brake path on the asphalt is longer average. The tire seems pretty soft, and her handling is very sluggish, but in general it is easy to keep under control.
Efficiency and comfort: round resistance is rather low for a studed bus, but noise level is one of the highest in the test.
Per:

  • Good challenges on snow and ice.

Vs:

  • Noise.

Evaluation: ★★ 7.7 points.

Driving on ice and in the snow : This model did not succeed in the test. The clutch on the snow and on the ice was the weakest among all studded tires, the tire was quite difficult to control. Weak adhesion led to slow power steering, the rear wheels quickly lost contact with an expensive in extreme conditions. The behavior of this tire was full of unpleasant surprises.
Driving on asphalt: On a clean road, she felt much better. Here she was able to show a good course stability, clear handling and efficient braking. On a dry road, she demonstrated the best result.
Efficiency and comfort: noise level and rolling resistance at the average level ..
Per:

  • Hanging quality on asphalt.

Vs:

  • Clutch on the winter road; Handling on the winter road.

Evaluation: ★ 7.2 points.

Inspected tires

Driving on ice and in the snow: The best awesome tire on snow-covered and iced roads. Good grip during acceleration and braking, but the best thing in this bus is that it retains control over expensive even in extreme conditions when the clutch limit is achieved. It behaves logical and predictable under any circumstances.
Driving on asphalt: Rubber is pretty soft, the tire has too long brake path. Despite slow control, this Nokian model will not give the driver any unpleasant surprises.
Efficiency and comfort: This tire is very quiet, and the resistance of rolling is the lowest of all dough participants.
Per:

  • behavior in the snow and ice;
  • rolling resistance.

Vs:

  • coupling on asphalt.

Evaluation : ★★★ 7.7 points.

Driving on ice and in the snow: good grip when overclocking and braking. However, in extreme conditions, the tire lacks longitudinal clutch, and the front tires can suddenly lose the clutch with the road, especially in the snow.
Driving on asphalt: on a wet road, this is the best nothesive tire. Fine braking and easy handling on a wet road for an awkward winter tire. The grip on the dry road is also very good, and although the reaction to the steering turns is slightly slowed down, the tire behaves calmly and confident even when performing the most complex maneuvers.
Efficiency and comfort: Very quiet tire, rolling resistance is one of the lowest in the test.
Per:

  • short brake path on snow and ice;
  • hanging quality on asphalt.

Vs:

  • medious transverse clutch on the snow and ice.

Evaluation: ★★ 7.6 points.

Driving on ice and in the snow: Michelin behaves calmly on snow and on ice, she has a good grip when braking. Nevertheless, on a slippery road, the front tire clutch limit is very limited, and with a sharp turn of the steering wheel, the car can go into a skid. The rear wheels have excellent clutch, and there are no problems with them even in the most difficult situations.
Driving on asphalt: on a clean road, this model is reliable. When maneuvering, it behaves slowly, but confidently does not lose clutch even in extreme conditions. Michelin has a clear tendency to insufficient turning even on pure asphalt, the front wheels lose the grip with an expensive before the rear.
Efficiency and comfort: This is a quiet tire, rolling resistance on average for untapped tire levels.
Per:

  • braking on snow and ice;
  • reliable behavior in any weather.

Vs:

  • medious grip on the wet road.

Evaluation: ★★ 7.6 points.

Driving on ice and in the snow: Good grip on ice, although far from the best. This tire is easily controlled, however, with a very fast maneuvering, the rear wheels lose the clutch with the road. Clear handling in the snow, balanced, reliable behavior.
Driving on asphalt: pretty good clutch and short brake path. Clear power steering, although it seems quite slow, especially on a dry road. It is typically for soft unwanted tires, which were designed primarily for snow and ice.
Efficiency and comfort: Quiet tire, rolling resistance at a good level.
Per:

  • grip on snow and ice;
  • clutch on a wet road;

Vs:

  • handling on a dry road.

Evaluation: ★★ 7.6 points.

Driving on ice and in the snow: Good clutch on ice, short brake path and clear handling. In the snow, the clutch limit is small, especially with sharp turns. But the tire easily and quickly restores control over the road.
Driving on asphalt: Pretty short brake path. But the tire seems pretty soft and behaves more sluggish. The slow transmission of the steering effort should be considered when maneuvering.
Efficiency and comfort: very quiet tire with very low rolling resistance.
Per:

  • clutch on ice and snow;
  • rolling resistance.

Vs:

  • handling on asphalt.

Evaluation: ★★ 7.5 points.

Driving on ice and in the snow: clutch on ice on one or two steps lags behind the level of the best tires of this test. This model can still be used, but the clutch limit is small, and in extreme conditions, it may not be easy to return control over expensive. In the snow, it behaves calmly and balanced, although she still lacks the clutch.
Driving on asphalt: On the asphalt, it behaves like a typical untouched tire. The slow motion transmission of the steering force is equally both on the dry and on the wet road - but in general the tire behaves logical and predictably. This model will not surprise the driver of a sudden contact loss with an expensive on maneuvering.
Efficiency and comfort: Quiet tire with rather low rolling resistance.
Per:

  • grip on the snow;
  • rolling resistance.

Vs:

  • clutch on ice.

Evaluation: ★ 7.0 points.

Driving on ice and in the snow: the clutch on the ice is quite modest, at least in comparison with best models. The front wheels are quite easy to lose clutch with the road. Thanks to a good cross-clutch, the controllability in the snow is very good. Clutch during acceleration and braking in the snow is also at a high level.
Driving on asphalt: on the wet road, the tire behaves sluggish and unreliable. When maneuvering, it demonstrates the slow transmission of the steering effort, and it is difficult to control it due to the weak clutch and fuzzy handling. On dry asphalt behaves acceptable.
Efficiency and comfort: like most of the premium tires of the premium, this model has a rather low noise level. But she has the highest rolling resistance in the test.
Per:

  • grip on the snow and on dry asphalt.

Vs:

  • clutch on ice and wet road;
  • rolling resistance.

Evaluation: ★ 6.9 points.

Driving on ice and in the snow: Nankang really coped with the dough. The lack of clutch on ice during acceleration and braking has become the largest problem. A good cross-clutch corrected her position a little, but, nevertheless, the overall impression was extremely unfavorable. In the snow, this tire is too easy to go to the skid.
Driving on asphalt: on a wet road, she behaves extremely unreliable. She slows down the transfer of the steering effort during maneuvering, and the rear tires are very easy to lose contact with the road. The brake path both on dry and on the wet road is very long. The tire lacks a clutch even on a dry road, while maneuvering is very difficult to keep control over it.
Efficiency and comfort: resistance to rolling is hardly the highest among the untapped tires. The noise level is noticeable, but does not cause excessive concern.
Per:

  • good transverse clutch on ice.

Vs:

  • handling on ice and snow;
  • handling on asphalt.

How to test.

Test for braking: it was performed on ice, snow, dry and wet asphalt. Tests were carried out at different temperatures. At the same time used the ABS system. On Ice, the speed at the time of the start of the braking was 50 km / h, in the snow and asphalt - 80 km / h. Tests for braking in the snow and ice, as a rule, are carried out on an open track, with careful observance of the same conditions (in particular, when maintaining the same temperature).

Test overclocking: it was conducted to measure tire cravings on the snow, ice and wet asphalt. In this test, overclocking on ice (5-20 km / h), in the snow and asphalt (5-35 km / h) were measured. Like other stages of the test, was carried out at different temperatures, its results may differ from the results of other tests. This test was conducted both open-air and on covered tracks.

Handling test: In this part of the test, the speed of the track was taken into account. The result could change depending on what driver was driving. Tests were carried out on ice, in the snow and on a wet road. The breakage time of the circle on a dry road is usually not carried out when tested tires.

Subjective control rate: In this part of the test, the controllability of tires on ice, snow, dry and wet roads was evaluated by the impressions of drivers and complemented the main stage of the test dough. The final estimate is the arithmetic estimates of all drivers. The main criterion of high assessment was safe and predictable handling.

Noise level : It was estimated subjectively from the inside of the car. During this stage of the test, the driver listened to noise while the car moved rolling from 100 to 40 km / h. No measuring instruments were used in this dough.

190 or 96? Or maybe 130? It is this choice to be done to everyone who will go on new studded wheels. Scandinavians legally limited the number of spikes for winter tires And now the manufacturers were divided into two camps: Some honestly developed new winter models, "Swread" the number of spikes up to 96, while others ... were able to circumvent the ban and literally stuffed the protector with metal "hysteries"! And the old models remained, where the number of spikes is former - 130. For what appeared new norms and what tires are better for the Russian winter, we tried to figure out.

The fact that the spikes harm asphalt is an indisputable fact. Therefore, in many European countries, where the climate allows you to do without spikes, only friction tires are allowed (in Russia there are usually called "velcro"). In Scandinavia, the spikes are allowed, but their mass, dimensions and quantities are strictly regulated: for one 16-inch wheels - no more than 130 pieces. But on July 1, 2013, the Scandinavians tightened legislation. Now for each running meter of the tread should have no more than 50 spikes. For the popular dimension 205/55 R16, this means that the manufacturer needs to "proper" 130 spikes to 96! Why is it necessary?!

The need to introduce new rules The legislators explain to their desire to save the road and thus save the funds of taxpayers (in Europe this argument works for the most absurd laws), and also take care of their health - they say that inhaling the asphalt crumb, the person is at risk of various diseases, including cancer. But the counterproofs from the opponents of the new rules much more. Who proved that the diseases of the respiratory organs provokes asphalt crumb? How many road crumbs are formed due to spikes, and how many for other reasons? And why should there be 50 spikes on the trafficphone meter? These questions, however, hung in the air. New rules are accepted, and they must follow all shinniki.

Exception to the rule

Or not everything? To the new winter season, the Finnish company Nokian prepared a long-awaited novelty - model Hakkapeliitta 8. In it - 190 spikes. One hundred ninety! So abundantly "civilian" tires (down the topic of sports tires) never hung. And the new Scandinavian requirements "Eight" corresponds to! It turns out that the law found a loophole, which the Finns took advantage of: Shipov can be as much if the tire harms the road surface no more reference. (The reference, we recall, is the tire, which has no more than 50 "hooks" on the temporal meter.)

Of course, the degree of "harm" is estimated according to a carefully prescribed technique. On the asphalt, the granite tile of a certain size is placed on which the car with a speed of 100 km / h should drive 400 times (in each direction of 200 cycles), after which the tile is weighed. If the granite rectangle "lost" is stronger than necessary (i.e., the test studded bus acts on the coating is stronger than the reference), then the approval does not receive such a tire. But the new Hakkapeliitta, as tests showed, despite 190 spikes, quite harmless to the road surface. Representatives of the company claim that they managed to achieve this result, thanks to the use of fundamentally new, lightweight, spikes.

Although many competitors believe that the representatives of the Trafi transport security agency - it is they determined whether the tire hurts asphalt - jumped and tritely made an overlook for compatriots from Nokian. Why? The basis of the well-being Nokian - Tires of the Hakkapeliitta series (it is 80% of all winter tires manufactured by Nokian). And that the new generation of Hakki is strikingly different from competitors and attracted buyers, the manufacturer decided to "polish" the wheel with spikes, and the checking closed eyes on obvious violations to support the local industry. Repeat: I consider representatives of competitors companies.

In any case, the tolerance of HakkaPeliitta 8 received. Also, the cherished approval was acquired by Michelin (Model X-Ice North 3) and Gislaved (Tire Nord Frost 100), but both of these manufacturers did not use the loopholes and honestly reduced the number of spikes to 96. The rest of the tire brands prefer to wait time and simply nodded "Old sample" with 130 spikes: as it turned out, it is possible to sell "wrong" tires, but only if the "rubber" was released before July 1, 2013. In general, going for a set winter wheels, This season, the buyer can meet at once 3 types of tires! What to choose?

Theory and practice

Let's grow out. In theory, new models from Michelin and Gislaved, in which 96 spikes, should be mediocrely cling to the ice, but loud ridges on asphalt (especially in terms of noise). Conversely, a novelty from Nokian is simply obliged to failed asphalt disciplines, but shine on the ice track. This logic is based on the "facts known to each motorist": the more spikes, the better the tire shows itself on slippery coating. However, when moving along asphalt, the car relies on the spikes, and not on the protector! That is, the contact stain is minimal, and on solid coatings 190 spikes will make the car simply unmanageable.

Alas, these reasoning did not endure criticism from representatives of the tire industry. We interviewed several shinnik experts, but their answers were the same. First, the spikes do not reduce the stain of contact! It turns out that the tire is initially designed in such a way that the upper part of the spike when driving on the asphalt was completely accumulated inside the tread under the weight of the car. Secondly, the excessive mischievous does not simply give advantage, but even harms: with the number of "hooks" you can overdo it, and then the clutch on the ice will only worsen. We decided to check these arguments and carefully studied the tests that our colleagues from different editions spent.

For a start, let's see how "traditional" tires and novelty from Nokian and Gislaved on the tests of the newspaper tests are shown (in these tests, the third generation Michelin X-Ice North did not participate). "With such a number of thickens, victory over competitors, especially in ice disciplines, should be simply crushing! - Talk about Hakkapeliitta 8 Edition experts. - But the case limited to the victory, without defeat. On the run of controllability - the best time, driving a car is a pleasure. But the advantage over the ContiCecontact tires, which are less than 60 spikes, minor, and on the acceleration dynamics of the Continental tire even better. Because spikes in the Protector of Finnish tires, though much, but they are small: diameter, spike height, width of a carbide insert - everything is smaller than that of CONTINENTAL tires. "

At the same time, the novelty from Nokian surprised the test group by authentic by unstable behavior on the asphalt: "If the Nokian bus coverage provides a good slowdown, then on the wet - the longest brake path. And the expected disadvantage was the "itching" sound from spikes, which did not leave the salon in the entire speed range. " What answered "toothless" gislaved? With a confident third place: "On the manageability track - the third time, but the lag from the leader, having almost twice the spikes, less than a second! (...) Sliples are small and easily controlled. And in the snow, decent behavior, although there is a rescue breakthrough on the track of controllability. But on the wet asphalt - the minimum brake path! At the same time, the tires are noisy and gently "swallow" irregularities ".

Our colleagues from Finland are Tuulilasi magazine - the results came out very similar. In the first place - Hakkapeliitta 8, but the experts also expected from compatriots of a more breakthrough model: "To the fundamental improvement in clutch on slippery coatings, an increase in the number of thorns did not lead!" Also, the Finns noticed that on the wet asphalt, the new hackka is not good enough, and awarded an estimate of "8+" from 10 possible ... The second steel Goodyear Ultragrip Ice Arctic (130 spikes, in the test, the Sixth Position), and journalists They noted how good Ice Arctic showed themselves in the snow and ice tracks, and their biggest problem is insufficient cross-clutch. In a turn with a sharp braking, the car can take.

Table 1

The third place was divided by Continental ContiCecontact, Pirelli Winter Ice Zero (at both models of 130 spikes and, accordingly, the second and fourth versions according to the veneer version) and ... Novelty from Michelin. At the same time, noting the smallest number of spikes among all test participants, the Tuulilasi test group praised the last generation of X-Ice North for good handling and predictable behavior. What is called, not a number, and the ability! Although the weakness of Michelin was not covered from experts on a piece of clutch on snowy and ice coatings - the leaders cling to a slippery road much better. As for the Gislaved, which so much liked "Autorevniks", then this model (for incomprehensible reasons) Finns were not tested.

Another Finnish edition, Tekniikan Maailma, also awarded Nokian victory. True, unlike experts, authored and tuulilasi, TM journalists will not be bought on praise, stating that Nokian "raised the bar to a new level, thanks to extremely high results on the ketting of the coverage." Like this! Although the magazine honestly notes that the creators of Hakkapeliitta 8 had to sacrifice the ride qualities on the asphalt. GISLAVED NORD FROST 100? They have a third place, and these tires Finns are recommended for the Northern Winter for a balanced character.

Other tires that the autores like and Tuulilasi liked - Pirelli Winter Ice Zero, Continental ContiiceCecontAct and Goodyear Ultragrip Ice Arctic - also earned high marks from Tekniikan Maailma, becoming test leaders. But the new Michelin "TEEMMTS" was awarded only the eighth line of the final protocol. Yes, they are praised for optimal handling on any coatings, but they scold for insufficiently good clutch on ice. So it's all about estimates, except for Tekniikan Maailma experts consider objective parameters (i.e., overclocking and braking on ice) more important than subjective, so the X-Ice North 3 became the eighth, and not the third, as it turned out on the Toulylacy test .

Conclusions? After reviewing test results, Tuulilasi and Tekniikan Maailma, we can say the following. With almost two-time superiority in the number of hikes HakkaPeliitta, 8 competitors did not defeat. Yes, these are good tires for harsh winter conditions, but at such prices (the set of dimension 205/55 R16 will have to lay out 28 thousand rubles!) You can choose an equally high-quality "rubber" for less money. For example, "toothless" Gislaved Nord Frost 100: modest 96 spikes did not interfere with this bus show decent results. And the price is pleasant - 18 thousand for 4 wheels 205/55 R16. "Classic" tires with 130 spikes also not lost against the background of the "tobast" opponent! The top five on the results of tests of all three editions included Continental ContiCecontact, Pirelli Winter Ice Zero and Goodyear Ultragrip Ice Arctic.

So fans of "riding" may not worry: the revolution did not happen and tires famous brands, regardless of the number of spikes, close by characteristics, differing rather than nuances. Although one important difference experts found - Gislaved Nord Frost 100 and Michelin X-Ice North 3 essentially quieter of other models. However, fans of silence experts still advise untouched, friction, tires. But is there any such tice quiet "riding"? And is it strongly "Velcro" behind "Ice Disciplines"? We will tell about it very soon.

With my own eyes

In February, at the invitation of Michelin, we visited the presentation of the X-Ice North 3 model 3. Sweden, a light frost, and a frozen lake, which was laid a tricky winding track. In the parking lot - a dozen new Hatchbacks Volvo V40 on different tires: In addition to its novelty, Mishentians put Nokian Hakkapaliitta 8 and Goodyear Ultragrip Ice Arctic. Who is stronger? He who has more thorns! And if between Chudir and Michelin on the Snow-Ice Trek the difference is small, then colleagues on Hakku went forward ... and we left for example, do not catch up. Failure?

Not at all. First, Michelin experts believe that at low temperatures, the difference in the ice "ring" would be smaller, since the new thermoactive rubber has an interesting effect - the lower the ambient temperature, the tougher the protector becomes. And, for example, at -20-25 ºС, when the hardness of ice becomes an exemplary, X-Ice North 3 commits competitors due to the fact that the spikes cannot "hide" inside the tread! Secondly, the third generation of Iquais is objectively better than the second, despite the smaller number of spikes. In particular, the brake path on the ice decreased by 10%.

And thirdly. In the snow, Michelin objectively surpasses rivals. (This, by the way, noted Tekniikan Maailma experts.) When the car endured a snowy virvo, Volvo on Goodyear and Nokian quickly "buried", and the hatchbacks on Michelin continued to move. And by the way, it is more difficult to fly beyond the route on the French tires: the skid on the hacke and the Arctic begins sharp and adjust it to more accurate, weighted, actions. So the average driver who has not passed sports driving courses, X-Ice North 3 will seem more understandable, balanced, tire.
