The base four-door has a double-wishbone suspension at the front and a five-link design at the rear. For an extra charge, the car is offered with Dynamic Body Control suspension with adaptive shock absorbers or pneumatic Air Body Control.

At the moment, the model’s line of power units consists of three engines. The CLS 350 d modification received a 2.9-liter diesel six developing 286 hp. and 600 Nm. The same engine is available in the 450 d version, only the output of the unit here is already 340 forces and 700 Nm of torque.

The petrol Mercedes-Benz CLS 450 is powered by the new 3.0-litre M 256 engine with EQ Boost starter-alternator. This engine develops 367 hp. and 500 Nm, while the electric motor can temporarily add another 20 forces and 250 Nm of traction. Also, the starter-generator is capable of starting a stopped engine and storing energy in recovery mode.

Concerning dynamic characteristics, then the top version accelerates from zero to hundreds in 4.7 seconds, and the diesel versions 350 d and 450 d need 5.7 and 5.0 seconds to reach this level, respectively.

All engines work in conjunction with a nine-speed automatic transmission, plus the car already comes with a proprietary system as standard all-wheel drive 4MATIC. In the future, the Germans will expand the range of available units by using four-cylinder engines, but the new CLS will no longer have a V8 version, as well as a Shooting Brake station wagon.
