But there are many other “sores”, which are worth talking about,” the specialist begins his story. “In general, there is nothing wrong with this car if you buy a non-damaged copy.”

The “Seven” of the 2000s still amazes with its quality of finish, crazy dynamics and controllability. Even the multimedia equipment is not so outdated compared to modern cars. Well, the once controversial design now looks simply familiar. In 2001-2008 Only about 350 thousand cars were produced, and 150 thousand were produced before the 2005 restyling. The early restyling of the model was mainly caused by the desire to solve problems with the reliability of some components, therefore, if the budget allows, it is better to take a closer look at cars after 2005.

Operating experience



There were two cars being repaired at the service station: a pre-styling copy with gasoline engine 4.4 2004 onwards and restyled version 2008. with diesel 3.0.

The first one was bought six months ago for around $10,000 and in very good condition. At the moment, the mileage is at least 240,000 km. During this time, excluding tires, $2000 was invested in the car. It would be possible to invest less, but the owner scrupulously monitors the condition and changes everything. The second copy has been with the Belarusian owner for 6 years. The car is from Germany, the odometer currently shows about 180,000 km. The owner loves her - he says that, in addition to repairing the gearbox, replacing the rear pump air suspension, removing the particulate filter and flaps in intake manifold, there were no special repairs. According to him, it was mainly carried out Maintenance- oil change, filters, suspension was rebuilt once. Body

“At most, two or three bugs were found in “tired” cars from Russia - and that’s all,” says Artem. “There will be no problems with rust if there were no accidents or poor-quality body repairs.”

The front part of the body is made of steel and is not mounted with rivets, like the E60, which is also good.

The windshield wiper blades have an original mount and built-in windshield washer nozzles, so regular wipers from gas stations will not work, and a set of new original ones costs 80 euros. Some save money - they only change rubber bands, which cost a penny. However, the brush frames still wear out, and over time the windshield begins to scratch Windshield. But if before this glass was worth big money, then today there are plenty of Chinese and Russian analogues. Also, do not forget to put the brushes in the service position if there is a need to lift them, otherwise they will scratch the edge of the hood.

Interior and electrical


The finishing materials are very wear-resistant. For example, a car with a mileage of 240,000 km does not have a hint of any abrasions. Moreover, if you don’t forget to take care of your skin, the occurrence of problems can be postponed for many years.

"For example, door handles of cars equipped with the comfort access function very often fail. As a result, after closing the car, numerous electronic components don't "fall asleep". The electrical system of the car, to put it mildly, is not the simplest. Multiplex data buses - with many controllers and control units, literally a controller in each door and seat... All this can either simply fail completely, or be a little "moody", and it is not known which is easier to deal with. In general, the electrics are made with high quality, but there is too much of it.

“There are more units than the E60, but it cannot be said that the electrics are unreliable. Yes, there are various problems, but they can all be repaired. And there are no problems with power wires, like the “five”. The Logic 7 audio system has not proven itself to be the most reliable. It happens that there are errors with the airbags. There were problems with the navigation units and the telephone, which is also one of the “sores”, however, the problem is mainly related to the cables. “Glitches” of the door clamps often bother me, and the steering wheel position sensor often breaks. ", notes the master.

Optics also has its own nuances: “Over time, the headlights begin to shine poorly on the road. The lenses lose their performance, the plastic becomes cloudy. There’s nothing you can do about it - just replace the headlights.”

Motors

The most common engines on our market are the petrol V8 N62 with a volume of 4.4 and 4.8 liters, as well as the diesel three-liter “six” M57.

"The most weakness petrol V8 - valve stem seals. Problems begin literally after the first 60-80 thousand kilometers, the cost of repairs is 400-600 dollars. The engine itself is “snotty” - it’s difficult to find the car without oil fogging at various connections, valve covers especially often leak. Vanos and sometimes solenoid valves fail. Rarely, but the valve lift control system may bother you. Problems often arise with a generator that is equipped with water cooling. Its repair is expensive. With mileage, problems arise with the camshafts. In general, of course, these engines are far from being worth a million, or even half a million, but by modern standards they are quite reliable,” says the specialist.

3-liter diesel M57 various modifications considered the most successful and reliable power unit, which pleases with efficiency and excellent traction.

"He has the same problems as anyone diesel engine. In the event of malfunctions, repairs will not be the most budget-friendly. The injectors fail, the turbine begins to “snot” and wears out. In a pre-restyling engine, the injectors are repaired, but in a restyling engine, new piezo injectors cannot be repaired. The price of each is 250 euros. There are oil leaks, especially the intercooler boost pipes. On pre-restyling cars, the swirl flaps in the intake manifold can fall into the engine and cause damage to it. After restyling, they began to install aluminum dampers, but they can begin to leak oil along the axles, as a result it ends up on the glow plug block, solenoid valve EGR control, starter. In a dark blue car, the dampers recently leaked - the starter was filled with oil, which was out of order. The result is repair of the starter and removal of the swirl flaps,” comments Artem.

Problems with the particulate filter occur on average at a mileage of 250,000 km. A new one costs 500 euros, so owners often remove it. If necessary, the engine control unit is reflashed.

Deleted particulate filter there are no problems here, but the car starts to smoke, and when accelerating it even spits out black puffs of smoke.

The torsional vibration damper often fails. It costs about $300. Resource - about 150,000 km. Despite the presence of specific problems, with proper operation the M57 can withstand hundreds of thousands of kilometers.

“Is it worth taking a V12? There are a lot of spark plugs, a lot of coils, the engine is very complex - in case of malfunctions, they usually replace the entire engine. Moreover, the fuel consumption is far from acceptable,” says the specialist.

The 3-liter has proven itself well gasoline unit the M54 series of the pre-restyling "seven", but there are few such options on our market. His only serious problem- valve of the crankcase ventilation system clogged with sludge. For preventive purposes, mechanics recommend updating it every second or third oil change.

Transmission

There is only one transmission - a 6-speed automatic transmission ZF 6HP26. On average, its service life before the first repair is 250,000 km. The main problems are wear of the torque converter locking linings, failures of the mechatronics valve body due to overheating and dirty oil. But the box has long been mastered in repair, so fixing it if something happens is not a problem. The main thing is not to let the situation get worse, but at the first sign of trouble, contact specialists.

“The most important thing is that periodic oil changes are required, although there are no official maintenance regulations. At the same time, in order to change the filter, you also need to change the plastic pan, which costs about $100,” clarifies Artem.

If you don’t change the oil and filter and drive aggressively, you won’t have to wait long for problems with the transmission to appear. On a dark blue car, as we wrote above, the automatic transmission was repaired because the valve body had failed.

Suspension and steering

The BMW E65 has a completely acceptable service life of the main suspension elements. Front and rear - multi-link circuits with aluminum levers. “Some E65s have shock absorbers with varying degrees of stiffness. Their service life is quite long, but if they fail, replacement will cost a pretty penny. A pair of shock absorbers costs over a thousand dollars. Therefore, people often install conventional shock absorbers instead of electrically controlled ones. They cost around 100 dollars, that is, ten times cheaper,” comments the master.

If you don’t want unnecessary problems with the suspension, look towards versions without the Dynamic drive system. The hydraulic actuators of active stabilizers leak with enviable consistency: “Almost everyone has leaks, the cost of active stabilizers is very high, but in Minsk one service station has already learned how to restore them - repairs cost about $250.”

The rear suspension can be equipped with pneumatics. It does not improve handling and comfort as much as it increases the cost of car maintenance. The height sensor may fail ground clearance costing $60. On the restyled car, the owner had to change the air pump because it stopped turning off. The cost of the used part was $150. According to the owner, it could have been taken for repairs, then it would have been cheaper. Air cylinders also fail, but they have also learned how to repair them, the price is $50-70 per rack.

The brakes do not raise any questions, except that the 4-piston calipers may require rebuilding. Also, sometimes people complain about squeaking pads. The average cost of a pair of brake discs is around $140, a set of front pads is about $60, while rear pads are around $40. Plus $5-10 for a pad wear sensor.

The steering rack on a car with a mileage of 150,000 km will probably be knocking. You have to put up with this knocking; it hardly progresses over time.
