Forty-ninth Izh in detail. Forty-ninth Izh in detail Izh 49 year and technical characteristics

03.05.2020

After the end of the Great Patriotic War, Deputy People's Commissar of Armaments V.N. Novikov came to Izhmashzavod and learned about the idea of recreating the past there motorbike construction. The director of the enterprise, S.S. Gindinson, said that preparations for a new production had already begun, but it was expected to complete it only on our own no earlier than in a year. The conversion of the country's defense industry had already begun, its pace was increasing, and at the beginning of 1946, People's Commissar of Armaments D.F. Ustinov signed an order to organize light production in Izhevsk motorcycle with an engine displacement of 125 cm1 and ordered the use of a German model as a prototype RT-125 DKV company. There seemed to be a misunderstanding. Firstly, to the production of the same cars have already started in Moscow and Kovrov, and secondly, before the war it was produced here motorbike IZH-9 with a 350 cc engine, and the production of light motorbike and to the plant specialists it seemed like a step backwards. Having decided to urgently correct the current situation, they sent a delegation to the capital headed by the deputy chief technologist of the plant, A.A. Ryabov. His acquaintance with D.F. Ustinov inspired hope for a successful outcome of the trip, because they were friends while studying at the university. However, it didn’t take much convincing of the People’s Commissar. He immediately approved the proposal. They achieved seemingly little - replacing the prototype with a model NTs-350(of the same company) with an engine displacement of 350 cc, but this significantly changed the future production situation for the better.

To quickly implement the plan, a group of Izhmash employees was sent to Germany, to the DKV company (Zshopau). It included the chief designer and technologist - V.I. Lavrenov and V.P. Boltushev and other specialists. They adopted experience from the German plant and also controlled the shipment special equipment, drawings, technological documentation, unfinished parts motorcycle model NTs-350. The legend has not yet been forgotten that Herbert Weber himself, a German designer who created his motorcycle masterpiece back in 1934, was brought to them for consultations with Izhevsk residents, which was put into mass production four years later.

Compared with IZH-9 motorbike NTs-350 was more modern. It used loop blowing of the cylinder, a reliable electric generator, a motor and gearbox mounted in one unit, rubber self-moving seals, and many other innovations. As soon as a room was needed to set up a new production, it was immediately found, and a special specialist was placed in it. equipment arrived from Germany, and the necessary technological equipment and devices were made for the existing machines.

The first post-war model Izhevsk motorcycle designated as IZH-350. At the end of 1946, only 82 were made cars At first, some of the parts were used from German unfinished products, and therefore many samples featured four interlocking rings - the emblem of the famous Auto Union concern, which included the DKV company.

Izhmash specialists have already had to produce products developed at other enterprises. So, in 1933, preparing the release of the Leningrad motorcycle L-300, they finalized its design (it was not for nothing that the model accepted for production was given the brand name IZH-7), and during the Great Patriotic War- they manufactured the anti-tank rifle PTRS by S.G. Simonov, the NS-37 aircraft gun by A.E. Nudelman and A.S. Suranov, the famous Maxim machine gun, and each time they made, albeit small, but numerous changes that increased reliability, durability, product manufacturability. Here too, when creating a new motorcycle, they retained the powerful frame of the prototype, in which a massive power unit weighing almost 44 kg, but they simplified and changed a lot and, due to this, lost a lot of excess metal.

Motorbike turned out to be successful, but the growth of production was unexpectedly hampered by an unforeseen circumstance... On a summer day in 1947, a fire broke out in the motorcycle building. The fire damaged equipment, fixtures, and tools. Restoring what was burned required enormous overtime work. Because of this disaster, we were only able to make 2,357 that year. motorcycles" Fortunately, the situation was quickly corrected, and already in 1948, 16,041 cars left the factory gates, and in total, before production ceased in 1951 IZH-350, they were produced in 126,268 units.

While preparations were underway for serial production of motorcycles, the designers assembled several samples from German parts NTs-350 and began testing them in the vicinity of Izhevsk. Adaptation foreign model A group of designers (V.I. Lavrenov, V.P. Kamzolov, etc.) was assigned to our road conditions. Their activities were approved by the People's Commissariat, and soon a special design bureau was organized at the plant, work in which began with the creation of production model sports motorcycle IZH-350S. It was intended for cross-country motocross, so the main attention was paid to the wheel suspension. The front wheel was mounted on a telescopic fork with springs and hydraulic shock absorbers, and a pendulum suspension was used for the rear wheel. To better overcome bumps on the highway, exhaust pipes and the mufflers were raised above the rear wheel axis. The engine has been improved ( cast iron sleeve pressed into duralumin fins) and forced. We removed the headlight and rear light, the trunk and the manual gear shift, which made the motorcycle lighter by 11 kg. Since 1947, piece production began IZH-350S. Some of them were used in sports competitions, others were used for careful testing of new components and parts. Then they began to design a more advanced road motorcycle. The development of its design documentation was completed in 1949, and it itself was designated IZH-49. A year later, we completed development of the cross-country model, which, according to the already established fashion, was renamed IZH-50 and then, over the course of seven years, they were produced in small batches and supplied to sports societies.

This is how it was arranged IZH-49. The frame, power unit and headlight were used from the prototype -
IZH-350, front fork and rear wheel suspension from IZH-350S. A tool box was built into the gas tank. The passenger seat was reinforced on the trunk. In addition, in the design, as well as in technological process introduced many small improvements - all this resulted in a better model. If for the IZH-350 the factory warranty was provided up to 2000 km,
then on IZH-49 - 10,000 km and a year and a half of operation.

Steering wheel motorcycle was mounted on two brackets of the upper bridge of the front fork and was easily installed in a position convenient for the driver. The turning force was regulated by a steering friction shock absorber depending on the road conditions. The telescopic front fork and pendulum suspension of the rear wheel ensured riding comfort, especially with a passenger. Now motorcyclist could change his driving style. If on IZH-350 I had to go around even small bumps in the road and often slow down or stand on the steps to overcome potholes more smoothly, then, using IZH-49, there was no need to resort to such tricks - which, by the way, increased the average running speed.

When the “forty-ninth” went into production in 1951, others, even very famous ones, motorcycle Companies have not yet mastered the mass production of cars of the same class with hydraulic shock absorbers on both wheels. That's why IZH-49 the chassis was at the level of the world motorcycle industry. This car was different high reliability and adaptability, which manifested itself well in operation, but especially on long runs. About

In the history of domestic transport, IZH 49 personifies the well-deserved success of Izhevsk motorcycle builders. From 1951 to 1958 - more than half a million of these Unique machines were produced. They are still found on the roads of our country today.

I’ll add here a post about my favorite motorcycle IZH-49. At the time of restoration, I had no experience in repairing and restoring motorcycles, and I have no time, I work on business trips. Therefore, do not judge strictly! I am aware of all the shortcomings and inconsistencies with the original.
The review was written in 2014 and posted on another Internet resource. Go…
]
I knew what an IZH-49 was, but I didn’t even think about buying it; the owners of these motorcycles, out of delusions of grandeur and from the realization of owning a rarity, outdid the owners of all IZHs combined. Moreover, the condition of the motorcycle does not mean anything to them. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a hodgepodge of all the Planets of the local collective farm + a tractor magneto, or a rusty carcass that was left on the advice of a drunk neighbor, who, in turn, is very knowledgeable about retro and convinced the owner not to give it away cheaply, but to wait until they come for this trash from Moscow itself.
Look through the ads and you will understand what I mean...

After hesitating, he decided to call. There was no photo of the motorcycle in the ad. The voice on the phone announced the price of 10 thousand rubles.
All I knew at that time was that the IZH-49 should have a gear change on the tank and mufflers with fish at the end. Having found out that all this is there and the motorcycle seems to be running, but without documents, it is located 50 km from us. – I said that I’ll take it and come for it tomorrow.
It was January, time 15:00. I called my father and asked for Gazelle for tomorrow. The father says, “Let’s go and pick it up today, so wait.” And they did the right thing, while they were on the road, two more called the owner and wanted to pick it up, but didn’t have time.
We negotiated down to 8 tr, loaded it into the Gazelle and drove back home. I was happy like a child whose very, very dream has come true, and you won’t believe it, 1.5 years have passed, I’m still happy about it, I can’t resist driving it on the weekends.

In the morning, run to it and examine it. They picked him up in the dark, there was an Ilyich light bulb in the garage, there wasn’t much to see. It looks intact, it runs conditionally - “someone, once, recently, drove it with a magneto attached.” Rust, bruises, all in accordance with its age and living conditions.
It was completely stripped of all electrical and wiring. It turned out to be painted dark blue, but it was obviously repainted at some point, and with high quality, not with a brush in the garage and completely. But apparently it was a very long time ago, and for everyone it was a piece of old iron, but not for me.
Having surfed the Internet, I immediately found myself on a forum about IZH-49 motorcycles and a little about motorcycles of those years that were close in age, and from that time on I never left it. They will always help with advice, details, links, a very friendly and friendly forum.

This is where the Lyrics ended.
Practice.
Let me start with the fact that at the age of 30, I had never repaired or operated a motorcycle. Jupiter 2 at 16 years old doesn’t count, it’s only been ridden, picking with a screwdriver and a wrench at 10 doesn’t count.
Again, I’ll make a reservation: no with motorcycles, but yes with cars. Everything a man needs to be able to do with a domestic car, he did everything and did not cause any difficulties. Serving in the army in a UAZ complemented my skills, and life in general did not spoil me with the presence of new cars, much less foreign cars. Anyway.
Armed with a book and printouts from the Internet, I sat down in the garage in subzero conditions from the forum. Before completely disassembling it, I decided to start it and take it for a drive down the street.
I consider the distribution board to be the heart of the IZH-49 motorcycle. box. This is a small black box in which the ignition coil, relay regulator, ignition switch and charging indicator light are hidden. All this is turned on with a bizarrely shaped key. On the following models of the Izhevsk Motor Plant, there was nothing like this.
I assembled an electrical circuit from IZ Planet for a test run. Ignition coil 6V + PP1 + battery + generator. It took time to search through friends, they gave me something as a gift, I bought something in a store (a waste of money, nothing works, because it was made in China and of very poor quality).
Finally the day came when he started up by some miracle! Having sat down in the yard, I tried to turn on the speed, it turned on, but the motorcycle went...... backwards.

Too much early ignition, the crankshaft rotated in reverse side! It was not going to start again and the frost outside, at -18, did not add to my desire.
The next weekend, I started it up again and tried to drive it out, but the chain broke. The chain turned out to be larger than usual, either from a combine harvester or from a conveyor belt, it doesn’t matter. A new chain costs 300 rubles, I installed it. Forward! But no, after driving another 2 meters, the throttle cable broke.
All! Enough! Disassembled for repair!
Decided to cleanse old paint using a brush attachment on an angle grinder. This is HELL! Only thanks to enthusiasm and the desire to ride it in the spring, I was urged on. The process is absolutely disgusting. The wire from the brush is flying in all directions, digging into the clothes (I worked strictly with glasses), the paint turns into dust, the grinder tries to pull out of my hands at every uneven part of the part.
And the number of frame and body parts! During painting, I counted - about 60 pieces and mostly small things!.. All sorts of subframes, spacers for the center step, spacers for the signal, spacers, seats disassembled into components, etc.

I will never do this again. It’s better to pay, wait, negotiate for sandblasting, but not this!
Engine in major renovation Based on an acquaintance, they sent me to the Balakovo speedway club “Turbina”. To mechanic Vitaly - Thank you!
Despite its 60-year age, only bearings, seals and rings were replaced.

I took the tank and fenders to a car paint shop, and painted everything else myself, mastering this craft for the first time. Repainted, re-cleaned, re-painted. It turned out fine.

The most difficult thing is to draw the digits (thin lines on the frame, tank, wings).
At the factory, this was done by women who, with a steady hand and a brush with a long end made of natural hair, applied the standard lines the first time, apparently approved by the State Commission of the RSFSR. Nowadays, this is an art and is called pinstriping and is popular in America along with airbrushing.
Since there are no pinstripes among Izha owners, everyone does what they can. The best method in terms of results is gluing the contours of the markings with ZM contour tape, covering the rest of the surface and painting with a spray gun.
In my case, it was electrical tape cut across and painted with a brush. The results were different. In some places it’s very good, in others it’s a bit crooked.

First experience in painting with auto enamel.

Design

The motorcycle has a single-cylinder, two-stroke engine. air cooling with a return-loop two-jet purge, with the preparation of the working mixture in the carburetor and its ignition in the cylinder from an electric spark. Crankshaft- prefabricated, pressed. Carter - block type. The crank chamber is located in the front part, and the gearbox is located in the rear part. The crankcase consists of two halves with a connector along the middle longitudinal plane. The foot shift pedal and kickstart pedal are located on the left side of the transmission housing.

The front wheel along with the brake, speedometer drive gear and mud guard are attached to the moving part of the telescopic fork. A headlight is mounted on the fork, in the housing of which a speedometer is mounted, connected by a flexible shaft to a gearbox. The motorcycle handlebar is fixed in the brackets of the upper bridge of the telescopic fork, which rotates 35° in both directions. In this case, the steering wheel can be fixed in a position convenient for the driver.

WITH right side The gas tank is fixed to the sector of the manual gear shift lever. When changing gears with the pedal, the lever moves to the position corresponding to the engaged gear.

The low weight of the unsprung part and the little changing reach give the motorcycle very good stability and controllability. The rear wheel is mounted in a lateral rigidity fork, which is elastically suspended from the frame on spring-hydraulic elements. Wheels are easily removable and non-interchangeable.

Excerpt characterizing Izh-49

Prince Vasily, left alone with the prince, immediately announced to him his desire and hopes.
“What do you think,” said the old prince angrily, “that I’m holding her and can’t part with her?” Imagine! – he said angrily. - At least tomorrow for me! I’ll just tell you that I want to know my son-in-law better. You know my rules: everything is open! I’ll ask you tomorrow: she wants it, then let him live. Let him live, I'll see. - The prince snorted.
“Let him come out, I don’t care,” he shouted in that shrill voice with which he shouted when saying goodbye to his son.
“I’ll tell you straight,” said Prince Vasily in the tone of a cunning man, convinced of the needlessness of being cunning in front of the insight of his interlocutor. – You see right through people. Anatole is not a genius, but an honest, kind fellow, a wonderful son and dear one.
- Well, well, okay, we'll see.
As always happens for single women who have lived for a long time without male society, when Anatole appeared, all three women in the house of Prince Nikolai Andreevich equally felt that their life had not been life before that time. The power to think, feel, and observe instantly increased tenfold in all of them, and as if it had hitherto been happening in darkness, their lives were suddenly illuminated with a new light, full of meaning.
Princess Marya did not think or remember at all about her face and hairstyle. The handsome, open face of the man who might be her husband absorbed all her attention. He seemed to her kind, brave, decisive, courageous and generous. She was convinced of it. Thousands of dreams about a future family life constantly arose in her imagination. She drove them away and tried to hide them.
“But am I too cold with him? - thought Princess Marya. “I try to restrain myself, because deep down I feel too close to him; but he doesn’t know everything that I think about him, and he can imagine that he is unpleasant to me.”
And Princess Marya tried and failed to be polite to the new guest. “La pauvre fille! Elle est diablement laide,” [Poor girl, she’s devilishly ugly,] Anatole thought about her.
M lle Bourienne, also raised to a high degree of excitement by Anatole's arrival, thought in a different way. Of course, a beautiful young girl without a certain position in the world, without relatives and friends and even a homeland, did not think of devoting her life to the services of Prince Nikolai Andreevich, reading books to him and friendship with Princess Marya. M lle Bourienne has long been waiting for that Russian prince who will immediately be able to appreciate her superiority over the Russian, bad, poorly dressed, awkward princesses, fall in love with her and take her away; and this Russian prince finally arrived. M lle Bourienne had a story that she heard from her aunt, completed by herself, which she loved to repeat in her imagination. It was a story about how a seduced girl introduced herself to her poor mother, sa pauvre mere, and reproached her for giving herself to a man without marriage. M lle Bourienne was often moved to tears, telling him, the seducer, this story in her imagination. Now this he, a real Russian prince, has appeared. He will take her away, then ma pauvre mere will appear, and he will marry her. This is how M lle Bourienne's whole future history, at the same time she was talking to him about Paris. It was not calculations that guided m lle Bourienne (she didn’t even think for a minute about what she should do), but all this had been ready in her for a long time and was now only grouped around the appearance of Anatole, whom she wanted and tried to please as much as possible.
The little princess, like an old regimental horse, hearing the sound of a trumpet, unconsciously and forgetting her position, prepared for the usual gallop of coquetry, without any ulterior thought or struggle, but with naive, frivolous fun.
Despite the fact that in women's society Anatole usually put himself in the position of a man who was tired of women running after him, he felt vain pleasure in seeing his influence on these three women. In addition, he began to experience for the pretty and provocative Bourienne that passionate, brutal feeling that came over him with extreme speed and prompted him to the most rude and daring actions.
After tea, the company moved to the sofa room, and the princess was asked to play the clavichord. Anatole leaned his elbows in front of her next to M lle Bourienne, and his eyes, laughing and rejoicing, looked at Princess Marya. Princess Marya felt his gaze on her with painful and joyful excitement. Her favorite sonata transported her to the most sincerely poetic world, and the gaze she felt on herself made this world even more poetic. Anatole’s gaze, although fixed on her, did not refer to her, but to the movements of m lle Bourienne’s leg, which at that time he was touching with his foot under the piano. M lle Bourienne also looked at the princess, and in her beautiful eyes there was also an expression of frightened joy and hope, new to Princess Marya.
“How she loves me! - thought Princess Marya. – How happy I am now and how happy I can be with such a friend and such a husband! Is it really a husband? she thought, not daring to look at his face, feeling the same gaze directed at herself.
In the evening, when they began to leave after dinner, Anatole kissed the princess’s hand. She herself did not know how she got the courage, but she looked directly at the beautiful face approaching her myopic eyes. After the princess, he approached M lle Bourienne’s hand (it was indecent, but he did everything so confidently and simply), and M lle Bourienne flushed and looked at the princess in fear.
“Quelle delicatesse” [What delicacy,] thought the princess. – Does Ame (that was the name of m lle Bourienne) really think that I can be jealous of her and not appreciate her pure tenderness and devotion to me? “She went up to M lle Bourienne and kissed her deeply. Anatole approached the little princess's hand.
- Non, non, non! Quand votre pere m"ecrira, que vous vous conduisez bien, je vous donnerai ma main a baiser. Pas avant. [No, no, no! When your father writes to me that you are behaving well, then I will let you kiss your hand. Not before.] – And, raising her finger and smiling, she left the room.

Everyone left, and, except for Anatole, who fell asleep as soon as he lay down on the bed, no one slept for a long time that night.
“Is he really my husband, this strange, handsome, kind man; the main thing is to be kind,” thought Princess Marya, and fear, which almost never came to her, came over her. She was afraid to look back; it seemed to her that someone was standing here behind the screens, in a dark corner. And this someone was he - the devil, and he - this man with a white forehead, black eyebrows and a ruddy mouth.
She called the maid and asked her to lie down in her room.
M lle Bourienne walked around the winter garden for a long time that evening, waiting in vain for someone and then smiling at someone, then being moved to tears by the imaginary words of pauvre mere, reproaching her for her fall.
The little princess grumbled at the maid because the bed was not good. She was not allowed to lie on her side or on her chest. Everything was difficult and awkward. Her stomach was bothering her. He bothered her more than ever, just now, because Anatole’s presence transported her more vividly to another time, when this was not the case and everything was easy and fun for her. She was sitting in a blouse and cap on an armchair. Katya, sleepy and with a tangled braid, interrupted and turned over the heavy feather bed for the third time, saying something.
“I told you that everything is lumps and pits,” the little princess repeated, “I would be glad to fall asleep myself, so it’s not my fault,” and her voice trembled, like that of a child about to cry.
The old prince also did not sleep. Through his sleep, Tikhon heard him walking angrily and snorting through his nose. It seemed to the old prince that he was insulted on behalf of his daughter. The insult is the most painful, because it did not apply to him, but to someone else, to his daughter, whom he loves more than himself. He told himself that he would change his mind about this whole matter and find what was fair and should be done, but instead he only irritated himself more.
“The first person he meets appears - and father and everything are forgotten, and runs upstairs, combs his hair and wags his tail, and doesn’t look like himself! Glad to leave my father! And she knew that I would notice. Fr... fr... fr... And don’t I see that this fool only looks at Burienka (we need to drive her away)! And how there is no pride enough to understand this! At least not for myself, if there is no pride, then for me, at least. We need to show her that this idiot doesn’t even think about her, but only looks at Bourienne. She has no pride, but I will show her this”...
Having told his daughter that she was mistaken, that Anatole intended to court Bourienne, the old prince knew that he would irritate Princess Marya’s pride, and his case (the desire not to be separated from his daughter) would be won, and therefore he calmed down on this. He called Tikhon and began to undress.
“And the devil brought them! - he thought while Tikhon covered his dry, senile body, overgrown on his chest, with his nightgown. gray hair. – I didn’t call them. They came to upset my life. And there’s a little of it left.”

And to the description of very old models of domestic two-wheeled vehicles. Now we will tell you about rare motorcycle from IzhMash, you can buy a well-preserved or restored version of which these days for far from a modest amount of money. If you prefer the latest line of bikes, you are welcome to the Moto news section of our website.

Description of the Izh 49 motorcycle with photo

Being one of the first successful serial road bikes, this Soviet iron horse is considered the pride of the Udmurt middle class motorcycles. Initially, the designers equipped this two-wheeler with everything that is necessary when driving on various road surfaces. Moreover, a motorcyclist can travel on it together with one passenger. Mass production of the Izh-49 motorcycle was carried out in Izhevsk, starting in 1951 and ending in 1958. Interestingly, at times this bike was available in a side-trailer version. Prototype to create the above iron horse was the German DKW motorcycle, the equipment for the production of which was taken out by the Soviet authorities after the victory over the Nazis. It was part of the reparations that the enemy had to pay for his atrocities against his compatriots.

Initially, using equipment from DKW, Izh -350 motorcycles were produced in Udmurtia. The forty-ninth model replaced them in the early 1950s. It was the latest line of two-wheelers that appealed to the mass Soviet consumer.

The Izh 49 motorcycle, which many compatriots could buy at that time, began to enjoy special love among the people thanks to the then advanced telescopic technology of the front fork and modernized rear hydraulic shock absorbers.

Forty-ninth IZH in detail

Before the Izh-56 motorcycle completely replaced the above-mentioned rare bike, the Udmurt plant managed to produce more than half a million copies of the forty-ninth. In repair and maintenance, each representative of the latter can rightfully be compared with another national pride - the Kalashnikov assault rifle. Understand single cylinder two-stroke engine Even teenagers can ride this iron horse. The usual air cooling system, as well as practical use the classic return-loop blowing of cylinders on both sides in addition to the typical mechanism for preparing the working mixture (gasoline + air) in the carburetor indicates the simplicity of operation of the motorcycle engine.

Like the more recent models of this manufacturer, the Izh 49, the photo of which you see, was equipped with an engine with a front crank chamber and rear positioning of the gearbox. This power unit started up as usual when using a kick starter (winding stem), and its gearbox was switched when using a horizontally placed pedal. Both of these mechanisms are located on the left side of the engine.

The speedometer worked thanks to the front wheel drive gearbox. Not among the same distinctive features Moto Izh 49, the price of the working version of which these days starts from $1000, you will also find a way to install a headlight with indicator lights. All this is mounted on the front fork of the bike. In the headlight housing, in addition to signal lamps, there was also room for a speedometer. Interestingly, the steering wheel of such an iron horse can move 70° (35 degrees in both directions).

Technical characteristics of the Izh-49 motorcycle:

Tires of forty-nine

Motorcycles on Izhevsky Machine-building plant began collecting back in 1929. Serial production started in 1933 with the Izh-7 model. True, production volumes were tiny by modern standards. Let's say in 1934 the plant produced only 111 motorcycles.

Truly mass production at IzhMash began only after the war. In 1946, the plant received equipment, technology and drawings from Germany as reparations. This is how the Izh-350 was born, an exact copy of the German DKW NZ-350. It was produced until 1951, when the production line was gradually taken over by the modernized Izh-49, which later became almost a legend.

First of all, the designers increased the comfort of the motorcycle. The front one was used telescopic fork, rear suspension with hydraulic shock absorbers and some other improvements. Naturally, the frame was modernized accordingly.

But the engine retained its true Aryan roots - Izh 49 still used the DKW engine, which had undergone minimal changes. It was a 350 cc single-cylinder, two-stroke air-cooled engine with a reciprocating loop twin-jet scavenging system. The mixture was prepared in the carburetor and ignited in the cylinder by an electric spark. Everything is standard here.

The torque from the engine was transmitted through a manual 4-speed gearbox to the rear wheel by a roller chain located on the right side.

By the way, foot gear shifting was duplicated by a handle located on the right side of the gas tank. When changing gears with the pedal, the lever moves to the position corresponding to the engaged gear.

The kickstart lever is located on the left, next to the gear shift pedal.
According to the tradition of those years, the speedometer integrated into the headlight became one of the most memorable elements of the Izh 49.

The taillight is very stylish. There were no turn signals on motorcycles or cars at that time.

The blackout cover on the headlight, as well as the pseudo-military paint job, are a modern modification. Such motorcycles were not supplied to the army.

The muffler produces a very noble soft sound, not typical two-stroke engines. And the muffler tip is a real work of art.

The love of motorcyclists for the Izh 49 was determined by several factors. It handled perfectly, had excellent smoothness and stability, had good cross-country ability, rarely broke down, and looked great. Despite the fact that production of the improved Izh-56 model began in 1955, the “forty-nine” was produced until 1958. Over the entire period, 507,603 motorcycles were made. But there were also sports versions of the Izh-50A and 50B for multi-day and cross-country competitions!
