Hand position on the steering wheel

14.04.2021

), it will be devoted to the correct position of the hands on the steering wheel, it would seem that everything is elementary, but for many novice drivers this is almost the first question, as usual, experienced drivers will not be interested, but we ask newcomers ...

In order to drive a car correctly, you need to hold the steering wheel correctly and safely. Now in modern cars, it is no longer just a "steering wheel" that needs to be turned, it is also a control center, many functions of the car, from the audio system to cruise control or suspension tuning, such a device is usually called -.

And in order to make the most of all the benefits of this multi-wheel - learn to hold your hands correctly. I would like to say a few words about cruise control, on my website there are also technical lessons where one of the first considered the operation of this device (), be sure to read a lot of useful knowledge.

It should be noted that almost all modern car manufacturers now have hints that will allow you to correctly position your palms. These are all kinds of slots, grooves and bumps applied to the rim itself. Here they are

Thus, my manufacturer hints at what is correct to hold - in the so-called 9 - 3 position, along the arrows of the dial.

Position "9 - 3"

The left palm corresponds to the number 9, and the right palm to the number 3. So we place it - one opposite the other, it should be noted that such an arrangement allows you to effectively control all the functions of the car (audio system buttons, cruise control), as well as the control levers of the windshield wipers and turn lights. Another plus, you do not overlap the main display with indicators of speed, revs and other important values. Be sure to control them so as not to violate them in city mode!

However, it is not enough to keep your palms straight - you still need to make maneuvers such as turns and turns. In turn, "turns" are divided into three groups, these are smooth turns, medium and steep.

Smooth turns

They pass from position 9 - 3, usually these are turns either at high speeds, or not so steep. With both hands from "nine - three", we move the steering wheel to the right or left, usually this way you can turn no more than 25 degrees. Of course, you can make a sharper maneuver, but it will be convenient for your hands to cross, here you need the skill of performing medium maneuvers. You can train in this way on the track (where the speeds are higher than city ones), then you just need this kind of maneuvers.

maneuver from position 9 - 3

Medium maneuvers

Turns 90 degrees. From the "9 - 3" scheme, it is inconvenient to turn at large angles (90 and more), for this you need to use a different tactic. If you turn to the left, then - we leave the left palm in position “9”, lower the right palm by 6 o'clock, then with the right - turn the steering wheel to the left, until the turn is made, and with the left hand we help the process, but the right palm is the main one (you push the steering wheel with it). If we maneuver to the right, everything is the same, only we lower our left hand at six o'clock, and leave our right hand at the 3 o'clock position.

one hand 9 o'clock, the other 6 o'clock

middle maneuver

Cool maneuvers

Sharp turns or U-turns. In such maneuvers, you need to learn to intercept the steering wheel, again from "9 - 3" you need to start turning the steering wheel until they cross, and then you need to intercept your hands. The main thing is that you clearly hold the steering wheel with one hand when you release the other to intercept.

Do not properly keep your hands on top of the handlebars or below. The arms at the top cover the entire dashboard, you simply may not notice and exceed the speed. If your hands are at the bottom of the steering wheel, then you do not completely control it, it can be knocked out when it falls into a hole, which can provoke an emergency.

Probably the article is not so clear, so be sure to watch the video version of the article.

In my opinion, this lesson is not difficult - but obligatory. Learn the correct positioning, because the car can skid on a wet or snowy road, and only a good "grip" can save you. That's all, read our AUTOBLOG.
