Principle of operation of the start-stop system

The start-stop system works on the principle of the forced end of the motor operation after stopping the car and repeated automatic start. The cessation of the vehicle movement is recorded by a speed sensor transmitting a signal to the control unit. At the same time, information is received about the rotational speed of the crankshaft. On machines with a manual box, you need to put the lever in the neutral position, and release the clutch pedal. Cars with automatic transmission activate the system by signal from the retained brake pedal.

Based on these parameters, a motor stop occurs. The work of the climate installation or audio system continues from the battery. At the same time, the instrument combinations include an indicator that inform the driver about the operation of the system.

To execute a start cycle required:

Another distinction of the machines with the start-stop system is the generator and voltage control connected via a digital data bus. A similar connection allows you to control the parameters of the nodes and use this data when the system is running. The starter has increased strength and wear resistance. The windings are adapted to multiple repeated restarts through small intervals.

The electronics includes a special voltage stabilizer with an output power of 180-300 W. Inside the electrical energy drive is installed, which is transmitted to the on-board network through the electronic rectifier. The device smoothes voltage ripples at the starter times. Due to this, when working start-stop does not turn off the multimedia system, a combination of instruments and external lighting lamps.

On a number of cars (for example, Honda or Mercedes-Benz) there is a start-stop system, built on the basis of a reversing generator. The device is equipped with a reinforced drive belt and a special design tensioner. The switchable tension device allows the electrical machine to operate in the generator or starter mode. The plus design is silent operation and speed of operation (2 times faster than with the usual starter).

The Japanese company Mazda offers the original system built on the principle of injection and the ignition of the fuel mixture in the cylinders. Conditions for activation of the system

After turning on the ignition, the on-board network is performed in order to ensure the conditions of activation of the system:

  • the car is fixed;
  • the engine is idling;
  • the coherent cooling system is up to a certain temperature (15-25ºС, depends on the car manufacturer);
  • the brake system is properly (on a number of cars, pressure is measured in a vacuum brake amplifier);
  • the battery of the car is enough charged and the fundamental;
  • the microclimate system is correctly configured (the difference between the outer and the internal temperature is not more than a certain value, usually the threshold is 5-6ºС);
  • on a diesel engine is checked (during the start-stop procedure is turned off);
  • the driver is fastened by a seat belt;
  • the external body panels (doors, hood) are closed;
  • the clutch pedal is squeezed and the box lever is in neutral (for mechanical transmission);
  • the brake pedal is completely released (for automatic transmissions).

Failure to comply with at least one of the following conditions leads to shutdown of the start-stop system. Repeated initialization is possible only after the ignition system is passed.

Advantages and disadvantages of the start-stop system

According to the reviews of the owners, the following advantages from the use of the system can be distinguished:

  • reduction of fuel consumption and, as a result, emissions of harmful substances into the atmosphere;
  • using an improved battery and a powerful starter simplifies the engine launch at low air temperature.

The shortcomings are much more noted:

  1. The system provides good savings parameters only when moving from traffic lights to the traffic light. When moving in protracted traffic jams, when the car drives several meters and stops, start-stop is less effective. Additionally, the level of battery charge drops from frequent starter operations, which does not have time to change. As a result, the system automatically turns off. Despite the advantages that the system gives, sometimes it is required to disable it:

  1. Car manufacturers have provided a special button by pressing the driver turns off the start-stop system. However, this function only works within one ignition switching cycle. When you restart the motor, you need to press the button again.
  2. You can run the system startup by turning off the signal wire from the battery level sensor. There are several approaches to the implementation of the multiple engine start function:

The easiest and reliable in terms of design is the system Stop & Start. Bosch firms. Thanks to this system, the name "Stop Start" has become a none name of the rest of the systems. The system is installed on Audi, BMW, Volkswagen cars and provides reduction in fuel consumption, harmful emissions up to 8%.

The basis of the system is a special starter, designed for a large number of engine launches and having an increased service life. The starter is equipped with a reinforced low-noise drive mechanism that guarantees a quick, reliable and silent engine start.

The control system is stopped and starting the engine, as well as controlling the battery charge. Like all modern electronic systems, it includes input sensors, control unit and actuators.

The system does not have its electronic block, but uses the power of the engine control unit in which the appropriate software is installed. Executive systems of the system are injectors of the injection system, ignition coils, starter.

The work of the STOP & START system is cyclic (shutting down-launch). Turning off the engine occurs under the following conditions:

  • full stop of the car;

Mazda has developed a system Siss. (SMART IDLE STOP SYSTEM), which is an alternative to other Stop Start systems. Another name of the system i-Stop.. In it, the fuel injection into cylinders and the ignition of the fuel mixture is used for repeated engine launch. The system is installed on gasoline engines equipped with direct fuel injection.

To ensure the operation of the Siss system, the pistons in the cylinders stop in certain positions that are optimal for further engine launch. With the start of movement (when the brake pedal is released), fuel is injected into the cylinders and the fuel-air mixture is flammable, thus the engine starts. When starting the engine in addition to the energy of fuel combustion, the starter energy is used, which is included for a short time.

Reducing the fuel consumption when applying this system reaches 9%. The Siss system only works with automatic transmission.

What is the START-STOP system?

How does the starting stop system work on the car?

The principle of operation "Start Stop" system is based on the engine disconnection after receiving them signals from the sensors. The device functions like this:
