Land cruiser 100 years old. New comment

09.12.2021

"African" and "Arab" versions (they differ in two gas tanks and an additional spare wheel on the fifth door) are poorly suited for our climate: they have worse corrosion protection, a weaker starter, battery and a more capricious air conditioning system

If we are to choose an object for investing finance, then the Toyota brand in this case is one of the best among movable property. And any "Land Cruisers", be it "Prado", "hundreds" or "seventy" have a downright magical property - they practically do not get cheaper! So, for example, the hundredth Land Cruiser of the very first years of production is almost impossible to find cheaper than 600 thousand rubles! What is the secret of Japanese "jeep building"? Firstly, this car, like no other, fits the definition of "Toyota reliability": some sellers do not hesitate to put "untwisted" mileage of 900 thousand km in their ads! Secondly, there is a frame here. And frame cars, as you know, are in much greater demand in the secondary market, because it will take more than a dozen years for this important element to rot. And thirdly, "Kruzaks" give extremely valuable qualities for Russian buyers: a genuine sense of security, outstanding cross-country ability, which at the same time goes well with a comfortable suspension. Moreover, buyers have the opportunity to choose an even more off-road configuration: the Land Cruiser 105, although it differs from the "hundred" in simpler configurations, but instead of an independent suspension it has in its arsenal a continuous front axle with simpler and more reliable engines, as well as hinged rear doors. Many Jeepers still consider the "stack" to be the best expedition vehicle that only the Nissan Patrol can compete with.

ENGINES

Most (about 61%) of the hundredth "cruisers" were equipped with V8 gasoline engines with a volume of 4.7 liters (235 HP), half (27%) Toyota with a 4.2-liter turbodiesel (204 HP). ), and the smallest part (12%) are atmospheric diesel engines of the same volume (4.3 liters, 12%). The latter - an outrageously unpretentious unit with an index 1HZ has proven itself amazingly. Still would! After all, it was installed back in the early nineties on the legendary Land Cruiser 70 and migrated almost unchanged to the utilitarian 105s. There is really nothing to talk about it: the engine runs quietly 500-800 thousand km without any major repair work. But the same volume, a more powerful counterpart is already a little more capricious: a turbodiesel with four valves per cylinder and direct injection is more demanding on the quality of fuels and lubricants, which is why the injection pump can fail at 150,000 km (which, in fact, modern engines never dreamed of ) and must be replaced if damaged. Also, a turbodiesel requires constant valve adjustment every 40 thousand km. And, perhaps, the main thing that should not be forgotten when servicing both diesel engines, in addition to changing the oil, is to change the timing belt every 120 thousand km. The most common gasoline V8 is perhaps more gluttonous than units running on heavy fuel (average consumption is about 20 liters versus 15 on diesel), but no less reliable: the 2UZ series engine is extremely durable and easily overcomes the half-million mark without overhaul.

The most popular engine on the LC 100 is the petrol V8 (4.7 L, 235 HP). The unit, with regular maintenance, easily overcomes the half-million mark

If the driving style is too active, the brake discs are often the first to give up.

Despite the frame structure, even the 105th model, which features a fully dependent axle suspension, is extremely comfortable to operate.

TRANSMISSION

The Land Cruiser 100 has a full-time transmission with low gear and a forced-lock center differential and optional rear. All units can be called hassle-free: perhaps it is not superfluous at every MOT there will be spraying of the crosspieces of the propeller shafts and the replacement of grease in the wheel bearings every 50,000 km. After about the same mileage, due to the abundance of reagents on the roads, cases of oxidation of the mechanisms for switching on the interaxle blocking are possible: if the center does not "dissolve", you need to go to the service. As for the gearboxes, the "mechanics" was installed only on the 105th "cruisers" and with regular oil changes (every 40-50 thousand km) can retire along with the engine - one clutch can serve more than 150-200 thousand . km. Automatic machines with four or five steps are no less hardy.

BODY AND UNDERWAY

During its history, the "cruiser" has undergone two restyling. In 2002, the SUV received new optics, a radiator grill, an optitronic dashboard, separate climate control and side curtain airbags. In 2005, there were fewer changes, and the most significant of them was the appearance of a 275-horsepower petrol version based on the 4.7 engine. The body itself at Toyota is difficult to find in a frankly rusty state: corrosion resistance is at a good level. Although there are still weak points - this is the windshield frame and the lower part of the fifth door. If the power units of the Land Cruiser are the standards of reliability, then the suspension is simply indestructible here, especially in the Land Cruiser 105. The worst thing that can disturb the owner is the wear of the stabilizer bushings after 40 thousand km. By about 150 thousand km, there is some likelihood of wear on the shock absorbers and front ball joints, which change as an assembly with levers. A little later, the power steering mechanism may start to junk, but it is perfectly repaired. It is better to avoid cars with air suspension: the cost of repair is much more expensive, and the resource is much less. But even if the hydraulic spheres fail, it remains possible to switch to conventional shock absorbers. With active driving, you need to be prepared for the rapid wear of the brake discs - the weight of the SUV is still serious.

The third row was installed optionally

The interior may already look old-fashioned, but the quality of materials and sound insulation are at their best.

Most "cruisers" were equipped with automatic transmission

pros

Outstanding reliability, excellent cross-country ability, comfortable suspension, spacious interior, high liquidity in the secondary market.

Minuses

High price, not the cheapest service.

VERDICT

Of course, any car does not last forever, including the "indestructible" Land Cruiser. But with normal maintenance, the resource of most of the "Toyota" units can often twice exceed that of the closest competitors. Add to this the excellent driving characteristics and impressive cross-country ability, as the pricing and high reputation of the SUV ceases to seem unreasonable. The 105th "cruiser" is completely unique: there is practically no bridge expedition vehicle comparable in terms of comfort and reliability.

SUV UAZ Patriot took first place in the nomination " Domestic car"In the national automobile award" The best car according to Runet". The founder of the award is [email protected].

Voting was conducted online and anyone could take part in it. 15 nominees fought for the right to be called the best domestic car, the leadership of UAZ SUVs turned out to be so significant that, according to the results of voting, three UAZ models were presented in this nomination. As a result, 96918 votes were cast for UAZ Hunter, 102409 - for UAZ Patriot Sport. The Ulyanovsk SUV UAZ Patriot got the maximum number of votes and confirmed the status of the best domestic car for the second year in a row. Online voting took place from January 25 to March 16, and more than 700 thousand people took part in the voting.

The Land Cruiser 100 is one of the most suitable vehicles for lovers of freedom of movement, hunting and fishing. Reliability, cross-country ability, endurance and maintainability are the main trump cards of this car.

"Hundredths" were produced for only ten years, from 1997 to 2007. The release of a more advanced "one hundred and fifth" version of the car was discontinued in 2006. Therefore, even the most recent representatives are seven-year-old cars.

It is difficult to buy a hassle-free 100th "Cruiser", but it is possible. The main thing when buying is to turn off emotions, connect your head and comprehensively check the coveted car.

Checking the legal cleanliness of the Land Cruiser 100

At the turn of the century, "weaving" was an iconic car, symbolizing wealth and prestige. Land Cruiser 100 has been in the top of the most stolen cars for a long time. Therefore, a car can have a heavy karma: being wanted, having "broken" numbers and a ban on changing ownership.

In early 2014, the traffic police launched on its website a free online service for checking a car by VIN or, if it is not available, by chassis or body number.
Based on the results of the check, you can find out if the car has any prohibitions / restrictions on changing the owner and if it is on the wanted list. The service does not provide data on whether the car is pledged.

In order not to buy a car pledged as security for a loan, you need to carry out some more detective measures. Alarm bell - the seller does not have the original PTS, since banks, when registering a car as collateral, usually take this document. Duplicate PTS, however, also arises if the original is lost or simply ended.

The all-Russian electronic register of pledged movable property has not yet been fully operational, so it is not yet possible to obtain accurate information from a notary. You can use online services that have more or less complete databases of pledged cars. It's better than nothing.

Car owners.

One of the popular rules of market shopping says that the seller must be looked at as carefully as the product. If the owner is accurate and technically literate, there is a high probability that "order" is his credo in life and applies to the car as well.

Of course, the buyer has little chance of finding a seven-year-old (or older) car that has had one owner. But this ideal should be pursued. The more owners a car has, the worse, as a rule, its condition. It is not worth delving into the description of the consequences of the attitude towards the car “dodged and thrown”. Therefore, we go further.

Land Cruiser 100 frame.

The frame is the only numbered unit of the "weave", whose FRAME (or VIN) fits into the TCP. You need to pay special attention to her condition.

It can be bent or welded after a serious accident. It can be rotten if the car has "lived" in regions that abuse road reagents and sand-salt mixtures.

Russian realities are such that it is almost impossible to legally formalize the replacement of the frame. That is, a car with a new frame installed becomes "outlawed" and, if such a desire arises, it will be possible to sell it only "for the organs".

Therefore, if, upon examination, it is found that the frame is deformed, has undergone surgery or is thoroughly rusted, it is better to refuse the purchase.

Land Cruiser 100 body.

In general, it is not technically difficult to replace an old body on a frame machine. Such an operation will not create legal problems either.

However, the body is the most expensive "spare part" of the car, so its replacement or large-scale repair is too expensive. This means that we are also examining it with passion.

When studying the body, you need to pay attention to how susceptible it is to corrosion. As with the frame, potential "clients" for body repair come from large Russian cities, fighting snow with chemicals and salt. First of all, the bottom of the car, sills, arches and the bottom of the doors are given to rust. Also rotting places, poorly restored after the accident.

By the way about the accident. It is extremely difficult to find a car of this age, which has not been touched by the hand of the "chiropractor". A straightened and painted wing after a minor collision, especially if the repairer has done his job efficiently, is not a reason to abandon the car.

It's another matter if the car "reads" signs of a side impact, and even more so a coup: loose doors, cracks on the windshield, putty on the roof. It is better not to buy such a car - you will save time, nerves and money.

Land Cruiser 100 engines.

Different engines were installed on the "one hundred and fifth" and "hundredths".

For the Land Cruiser 105, the following options are possible: a diesel "aspirated" 1HZ with a volume of 4.2 liters and a petrol inline "six" 1FZ-FE for 4.5 liters.

The "hundredth" engines are more powerful: a V-shaped eight-cylinder petrol 2UZ-FE of 4.7 liters and a turbo diesel 1HD-FTE with a volume of 4.2 liters.

All motors are reliable, but each one has its own characteristics.
For example, a gasoline 1FZ will easily pass half a million km without any intervention, equipped with an "eternal" timing chain.

On the 2UZ engine, which is especially true for the copies brought from America, exhaust manifolds can suddenly burn out after 150,000 km. The toothed timing belt requires replacement every 100 thousand km. The rest of the elements, for example, a hydraulic pump, will serve at least 200,000 km.

The atmospheric diesel 1HZ is a million-strong engine. It is unpretentious, durable and omnivorous.

The turbocharged diesel 1HD-FTE produces more "horses", but, like all "turbo" engines, it requires the highest quality oil and fuel. The engine is equipped with an electronically controlled injection pump, and this is its weakest link. Even the improved version of the pump in 2001 has a resource of only 150,000 km.

All "weave" engines have an excellent margin of safety and reliability, but the cost of repairing these units is high. Therefore, before purchasing, you need to make sure that the engine is alive. It is best to determine this at the service station.

The legendary 1HZ has no electronics. This means that only mechanical diagnostics can be done for it: measure the compression, pressure of the injection pump and oil.
For the rest of the motors, it would be nice to carry out computer diagnostics, but mechanical diagnostics will not harm them either.

Land Cruiser 100 transmission.

Gear boxes

Most cars of the VX complete set were equipped with “automatic machines”, you can find variants with five and four steps.
The H151F mechanical gearbox was also installed on the “hundredths”. This five-speed manual transmission is perfect for the powerful Land Cruiser 100 engines.

Almost all "stacks" were completed with a mechanical "five-step" R151F, but occasionally there are gasoline copies with a four-step "automatic".

All gearboxes are reliable and durable. When buying, it is worth checking the operation of the "automatic" or the clarity of the inclusion of gears on the "mechanics".

Transfer cases

As a rule, cars of both versions have permanent four-wheel drive and downshift. The differential in the "razdatka" is blocked forcibly (it is constantly blocked in low gears).

Such a drive and interlocking system is provided by the 5F transfer case, which is reliable, but requires regular maintenance. It is required to change the oil every 40 thousand km.

Before buying, you need to check the operation of the lowered transmission row and the operation of the lock. The car may be in perfect condition, but if the center differential lock has not been used for a long time, its executive electric motor could sour. This usually entails the need to replace it. The matter is technically simple, but it can be a subject of bargaining.

Much less often in the Russian open spaces can be found "hundredth" with a transfer case 4F. The front-wheel drive in a car of this configuration is mechanically connected (using "hubs"). Naturally, it is necessary to check whether the front axle is connected.

Bridges

Until 1990, on "Cruisers" 40, 60 and 70 series in both axles there were gearboxes with main pairs with a diameter of 9.5 inches. There were no problems with such bridges.

Produced in 1990, the eighties "Cruisers" received a front axle with a gearbox reduced to 8 inches. Comfort and handling improved, but problems began on the off-road - under load, the gears of the main drive cut off the teeth.

The lack of inheritance passed to "weaving" and "one hundred and fifth". However, if for the Land Cruiser 100 in 1999 the problem was solved by strengthening the front gearbox, then for the one hundred and fifth Cruiser the situation remained sad.

To assess the condition of the bridges, you need to ride at speed and listen for extraneous howls or vibrations. Usually, these symptoms entail a complete bulkhead of the front axle on the "stack" or the gearbox with drives on the "weave", and these operations are not cheap.

Suspension of Land Cruiser 100.

There is not much to break in the dependent suspension of the Land Cruiser 105.
On the "hundredth" it is required to pay attention to the ball joints of the lower arms in the front independent suspension. Depending on the condition of the roads, levers with supports are enough for 70-150 thousand km. Riding with worn out mountings leads to accelerated wear of the entire suspension.

Most of the trouble you can expect from the ingenious hydraulic suspension on the VX trims. The car “freezes” unpredictably when the body height sensors fail. The suspension "dubs" and lowers if shock absorbers begin to leak or hydraulic accumulators "die" off-road.

If the car you like is equipped with "hydraulics", it should be borne in mind that the repair of such a suspension is expensive. But you can refuse from the hydraulic suspension at any time and install conventional shock absorbers.

Electrical equipment of the Land Cruiser 100.

"One hundred and fifth" does not differ in the abundance of electrical equipment, so this item is relevant mainly for the Land Cruiser 100.
It is imperative to check the operation of all electric drives in the passenger compartment (seats, glass, etc.) when inspecting a VX vehicle.

Malfunctions in the salon electrician are one of the main signs that the car is a "drowned man". It is better to stay away from such a car, no matter how interesting the offer may seem in terms of price.

So what does it take to buy the right Land Cruiser 100?
Patience when searching. Thorough legal check of the car. A good foreman and service station for complex engine diagnostics.
A lot of attention, a little luck ... and a new iron friend will delight you with impeccable service for a long time.

And the Land Cruiser midge on the Russian market is not an accident, but the result of painstaking work. Dreadnoughts of the 60th series are practically unknown in our country, but they are cramped and a little awkward, but already by the standards of the class, luxurious and comfortable 80s were appreciated in Russia. The 100th series, which appeared in 1998, is a consolidation of success.

With excellent driving comfort, high quality interior, elegant appearance - this is also one of the most reliable cars not only in this segment, but also among the models Toyota ... And the cross-country ability did not disappoint! True, there is one caveat: the usual "weaving" on the off-road is good, but for serious off-road "feats" it is intended TLC series 105. What is the difference?

Difference betweenTLC 100 andTLC 105

First, about the indices. The "regular", more expensive and "urban" variant of the Land Cruiser is designated by the index 100 and the letters VX. Cheaper and "hardcore", "rural" - numbers 105, as well as the letters STD or GX.

Now about the differences. Outwardly, their minimum: at first glance, only the rear doors differ: in the 105th it is a vertical swing pair, and in the 100th it is a horizontal hinged pair. But if you look closely, you can see other bumpers, different disc offset, the presence of hubs in the hubs and a lower landing of the 100th.

The design in both cases is a frame, but the frames are different and the bodies are also not interchangeable. The rear suspension will always be with a continuous axle, and in the front there are options: the 100 has an independent double wishbone, and the 105 has another continuous axle.

In the photo: Toyota Land Cruiser 100 (HZJ105) "2002–05

In the transmission, everything is again without tricks: either a permanent all-wheel drive with a center differential lock and the possibility of ordering a rear cross-axle, or a rigidly connected front axle on 105 series machines.

Most of the cars are equipped with one of two gasoline engines: inline six 4.5 of the 1FZ series or V 8 4.7 2UZ. As a rule, they are injector, but sometimes carburetor ones from the Emirates come across. Diesels - only inline sixes 4.2: naturally aspirated 1HZ and turbocharged 1HD. Moreover, the gasoline V 8 is relied on only for the VX / 100 versions, and the atmospheric diesel is strictly STD / GX / 105.

The difference in interior trim is no less than in the technical part. The STD version "flaunts" cheap vinyl panels and seats made of simple leatherette with manual windows a little better than in "classic Zhiguli". The GX trim level is only slightly richer: there are already electric drives and normal fabric upholstery.

Front panel Toyota Land Cruiser 100 GX "2005–07

Only the TLC of the 100 VX series is a truly luxury car. Here the interior is already made of completely different materials and even the basic equipment looks frankly Sybaritic. In addition to the powerful engine and chic interior, the cars in the VX configuration were offered with the TEMS electrically adjustable suspension and the AHC body level control system. The TLC 105 has nothing of the kind in its arsenal and cannot be.

Well, the differences are understandable. The 105 series machines are most often bought as an extreme "rogue" with a very strong construction, with an emphasis on quality and durability. And their brothers TLC 100 series are already machines for those who need dynamics on the asphalt and versatility, strength, and at the same time excellent equipment. Such cars have found their way into the garages of many organizations, such as traveling cars for oilmen and builders, security and escort vehicles, individual cars for "big people" for the winter, and outings.

For those who lacked the luxury of the VX, they came up with the Lexus LX 470 with the same V8 engine. Everything is expected to be richer in terms of interior trim, an even stronger limited-slip rear differential, a slightly different study of exterior details, a high-class Mark Levinson audio system and a cardinal system anti-theft protection - special non-removable VIN stickers on all parts of the car. Yes, yes, they hijacked TLC and Lexus not only from us, but also in the USA.

About theftTLC

Kudos, extremely high prices and a fantastically long waiting time for new cars (up to two years) have generated huge demand for this SUV on the black market. The car still occupies a leading place in the list of the most stolen.

By the way, the manufacturer is to blame for this. Toyota basically equipped the TLC with a VIN number plate on rivets, and only on late cars since 2005, a sticker in the doorway also appeared. But, “with the modern development of printing in the West,” all this helped little. In fact, the only "iron-on" number on the car is on the frame. That leaves a lot of freedom for those who need a "donor", and also just have a legal frame number or the frame itself.

The standard anti-theft device for the Land Cruiser 100 is also useless: there is an easily accessible engine control unit and the absence of any protection in the automatic transmission. In general, the cars left quickly and on their own, unlike the "Europeans" who sometimes went to the other extreme - if the system failed, even the owner could not start the car, and the services needed a lot of time to restore the immobilizer and ECU.

Toyota Land Cruiser from the United Arab Emirates - to take or not?

Despite the excellent rich configuration of most cars, it is not recommended to take the Middle Eastern variants (from the UAE and neighboring countries), since their design has been significantly changed in comparison with the "normal" ones. First, there is often no heater or a minimalist radiator. Two high-power air conditioners are not particularly needed in our climate, and besides, the wiring to the rear air conditioner (as well as to the rear heater) usually quickly decays, leading to a leakage of the circuit.

In the photo: Toyota Land Cruiser 100 VX "1998-2002

Hood cost

price for original:

55 860 rubles

But this is half the trouble. The main drama is that such cars have practically no anti-corrosion coating for the body and exhaust system, and technical fluids and rubber products are designed to operate only in hot climates. Even at temperatures around zero, the car literally begins to crumble, and moisture quickly renders the body unusable.

Iranian 105 series cars with factory gas-cylinder equipment and 1FZ-F carburetor inline six are especially not recommended. In addition to all the other "Asian" problems, a long-worn out power system will also be added, which is unlikely to be properly configured without serious alterations.

About liquidity

With this, TLC is in complete order. Used 100s and 105s cost absolutely fantastic money for older cars: a price of more than a million for a ten-year-old copy is not something outstanding, and armored versions go for three to five. Unlike Audi and BMW, no less prestigious in their time, Toyota loses surprisingly little. But is there any point in buying a TLC 100 at an age, especially for a considerable price, think for yourself. I will try to tell as much as possible about the nuances of design and operation.

In the photo: Toyota Land Cruiser 100 VX "1998-2002

Frame

Here it is of a completely traditional design, from a closed profile, and the main units are attached to it - the body is almost completely unloaded and bolted with 12 bolts. For series 100 and 105, as I have already said, the frame is different, but the essence of what is happening with it is about the same: it corny rusts along the welded seams.

In the photo: Toyota Land Cruiser 100 VX "1998-2002

The reasons are the same as for other frame machines, like. The frame is not airtight, dirt gets into the profile and ... remains there. To preserve the frame, you need to constantly clean it, or better, fill it with anticorrosive or just grease.

It would seem that the frame should be the most reliable part of the machine, but in fact it is one of the most vulnerable components. Cars from Moscow often required serious frame repair by the age of ten, but this problem hardly concerns Siberian users or connoisseurs of cars from the Caucasus - in a warm climate, even in the absence of protection, the metal copes.

Many legends and even one "layout" are associated with the frame number. Many people believe that the VIN number is stamped “in a frame”, although in reality there are no frames, there is a clear trace of the work of a powerful number press, and small tides along the edges of the number testify to this. But FRAME on cars for the Japanese market really has a visible embossed frame of a completely different shape, which is not found on cars with a VIN number. Below the number is one of the standard seams of the frame, and when checking in the field, traffic police officers often try to pass it off as traces of welding, demanding that the car be sent for examination. By the way, this seam often rusts after several years of operation. If there are doubts about the quality of the seam, it is recommended to punch the “pedigree” of the car by the engine number, or, even better, by the airbag stickers.

In the photo: Toyota Land Cruiser 100 VX "1998-2002

Like all other frame SUVs, the rear part of the frame is mainly susceptible to corrosion, especially in the area where the spring cushions and cross members are attached. When choosing a machine, it is worthwhile to carefully inspect this area, including tapping the welds. Repair is difficult: in some places the profile is double, the seams are multilayer, and there are amplifiers inside. The work is also hampered by the possible attention of forensic specialists to such operations: unsuccessful seams near the right front wheel, behind which the license plate is located on the frame, can quickly lead to the cancellation of the car registration.

In short, there is no need to get involved with machines with a rotted frame, even if it was not so long ago cooked and restored.

Body and interior

It's tightly tailored and well-sewn. And even if corrosion happens to him, but it mainly affects the fenders and bumpers, the windshield frame, the rear door, as well as damage zones and sandblasting. There is a certain risk for the front panel and body-to-frame attachment points.

Of course, cars driving on serious off-road suffer much more, and "urban" cars from the southern regions or even from Siberia often do not have corrosion at the age of fifteen, except that the "noble patina" on the paintwork from the bright sun and frost. All other options are usually located somewhere between these "extremes".

Slight corrosion can be found even on very fresh cars, on the edge of the front fenders under the bumper and at the very bottom of the fender near the door, but the speed of further spread of the scourge depends mainly on the living conditions of the car.

The reasons for the appearance of rust are clearly not in the poor quality of the paint, it is just that there are zones with the accumulation of dirt and moisture. A similar problem is with the windshield frame, the seams are the first to suffer, from them the corrosion diverges further.

In the photo: Toyota Land Cruiser 100 VX "1998-2002

There is not much fragile plastic on the body, but bumpers are the first to suffer from off-road raids on cars in a standard civilian body kit. The original is quite expensive, but there are enough Chinese ones, and the quality of analogs is quite decent.

Peeling chrome and worn out headlights are obvious age-related sores, and not the worst.

The finishing and interior equipment of the machine is renowned for its durability and indestructibility. Of course, the simpler the equipment, the more reliable, but it is believed that clear signs of aging are shown by cars only before the first restyling in 2002 and with severe operating conditions, and all the breakdowns here are "introduced".

For example, the backlash of the steering column is associated with an unsuccessful manner of landing behind the wheel, when they grab the steering wheel, and not a special handle when entering. Breakage of handles and locks, as well as of salon electronics - everything is superficial, the result of careless actions of users. Well, or banal neglect; in particular, the neglected state of the cars' saloons "from security" is quite typical.

Electrical and electronics

Probably, this is what a car should be. So that the section on electronics failures is one paragraph. No matter how hard I tried to find weaknesses in the reports of owners and craftsmen, the search for serious weaknesses led to nothing. Everything works fine if the car is not crawling through forests and mud. The quality of the wiring is excellent, all elements are made with a good margin of quality. Of the nuances - quickly wearing out headlights, the absence of a regular "xenon", a relatively small resource of generators (about 150 thousand kilometers), especially if there is a bunch of non-standard electrical equipment.

Brakes, suspension and steering

The braking system on a heavy and powerful SUV is very loaded, and on the TLC it works to the limit with any engine, except for a naturally aspirated diesel engine. The rest of the motors in heavy city traffic simply "gobble up" the pads and discs.

Corrosion of tubing or ABS failures? No, have not heard.

But the rear disc brakes just pop at the seams, and the front discs are not much stronger. In escorted cars, the pads can be changed almost more often than the oil. Be carefull.

The suspension is phenomenally reliable, with independent VX just as good as continuous axles on the STD / GX. The resource of most components is well over a hundred thousand, you need to worry about once every couple of years. And even on rough terrain, the front levers and ball joints can withstand at least 60-80 thousand kilometers.

If it were not for the TEMS Toyota Electronically Modulated Suspension systems - electronically controlled shock absorbers and AHC Active Height Control, then the conversation would be short. But if there is electronics, problems are added. First of all, the body position sensors suffer, as a result of which the car can "fall" on one of the axles, and if this happens in the mud, it can also sit firmly. Sometimes the wiring of the system also fails. The AHC system also requires regular fluid changes and maintenance.

The steering is quite reliable. Moreover, both in the case of a rack and pinion steering gear for 100 series, and with a steering gear for 105. Backlash and sticking are most likely the result of damage during hard driving. And even then, you need to try very hard.

Transmission

The ode to reliability is a little overshadowed by the presence of problems on cars before the first restyling, most often off-road. So, on machines with independent front suspension, the front gearbox was sometimes cut off until 2000, later it was strengthened. The resource of the front axle on the 105 model is also not very large, after 100-150 thousand kilometers of combat it needs a serious shake-up, with the replacement of all oil seals, adjustment of the main pair and replacement of worn bearings. But if you do not forget to change the oil in the transfer case, axles and not particularly anneal, then no waste is expected.

The resource of the transfer case of the permanent all-wheel drive is more than sufficient, with runs over 500 thousand it usually does not require repair. But it can be damaged, the reason for this is again corrosion, this time of the aluminum body and the drain plug. She has a very thin case, when you try to unscrew the "soured" screw, it often just cracks.

If you stuff the cardan joints and check the adjustment of the wheel bearings at each maintenance, then the resource of the cardan shafts and hubs is also more than sufficient, 200 thousand kilometers before the first bulkhead, and the front shaft and rear axle hubs are the first to surrender. Vibrations and noise are a reason to carry out maintenance on these units.

On machines with an electric center differential lock, the drive motor can also fail, the price of the "issue" is from 30 thousand rubles. On machines of the 105 series with a plug-in front axle, the problems are exactly the same, but they are complicated by the possibility of accidental activation of the drive on a hard surface and increased wear of the unit in this case.

There are no complaints about the reliability of mechanical boxes. However, everything is fine with automatic transmission too.

The four-speed gearboxes of the AW30-41LE series, they are also A 340F / A 341F / A 343, which were installed before the restyling of 2002 with all motors, are an example of reliability. With runs of half a million kilometers, they will only require a scheduled oil change and the absence of overheating. By the way, similar ones were put on. There are simply no weak points. For Lexus 470 and TLC VX with V 8, they installed the most powerful version of these boxes, A341, the rest of the versions were content with less "instant" modifications, but this does not affect the resource. It is difficult to overheat, overload, or break the box in any way.

Five-speed automatic transmissions of the A 750F series appeared after restyling, and few people call them eternal. However, a resource of 200-350 thousand kilometers for an "automatic machine" with similar dynamics and a gas turbine engine is already an achievement. In fact, it is similar to the other Aisin of the time in performance for Toyota and is almost perfect. Unfortunately, according to the regulations, the oil in it does not change (which does not negate the need to do this). Alas, this little "podlyanka" from the manufacturer limits the practical ceiling of the life of the boxes at the level of 200-250 thousand kilometers and reduces the number of available contract units. Be careful at the border of such a run.

Motors

With motors, too - complete order. Moreover, the TLC has no special problems with cooling systems and attachments - everything is done with a good margin of safety.

Basically, the car meets the legendary 4.7 liter V 8 2UZ -FE. This is a real "millionaire", its piston group is able to pass this million in the very real conditions of our tracks. The main thing is to change the timing belt at least once every 100 thousand kilometers, monitor the lubrication and cooling, clean the throttle and check the candles and spark plug tips in time.

True, the catalysts may not reach such a run, usually at 400-500 thousand kilometers, they simply fall apart, and if the symptoms are not noticed in time, the fragments can be sucked into the combustion chambers, where they will damage the piston group. The version with phase shifters after 2005 differs little from the "weaker" ones in terms of reliability, all the same excellent performance.

Timing belt cost

price for original:

3 411 rubles

Inline six 1FZ -FE with a volume of 4.5 liters - no worse, but less common. A resource that is absolutely impossible by today's standards, a good design and a low cost of service - it combines the incompatible. Often found with a gas supply system, which it tolerates quite steadily, though. Again, you need to change the timing chain as it stretches, adjust the valve in time - "and a million is yours."

Diesel engines of the 1HZ series have also long been recognized by millionaires. Problems - only with the fuel equipment, and even then rarely. He tolerates any diesel fuel. The resource is limited mainly, and more specifically, by its inexorable chemical corrosion and cracking. There is no turbine, the safety margin is huge.

More powerful turbocharged diesels of the 1HD series have shown themselves in two ways. On the one hand, the dynamics with them is not worse than that of the gasoline counterparts, with noticeably lower fuel consumption. But more capricious fuel equipment, expensive injectors, the limited resource of the injection pump and problems with the timing resource limit the resource until the first major repair at the level of 180-250 thousand kilometers. For any other car, this would be an excellent result, but not for the TLC 100, which with gasoline engines can go twice as much without much difficulty.

Summary

It's a little scary to criticize a car that has long and firmly become the idol of thousands of people. But it should be noted that with all the fantastic indicators of the resource of motors and transmissions, as well as the excellent performance of electronics and most auxiliary systems, there are difficulties with corrosion and really unpleasant and unsolvable problems with the stealing and criminality of the model in general.

Undoubtedly, this car is already a legend, but, from a practical point of view, the old-fashioned chic interior and reliability cannot cover up the fact that modern crossovers, being new, will easily beat the old TLC 100 in terms of the number of failures, and in terms of comfort and even more economy in something and surpass. But they will not have such cross-country ability and such charisma. Your voice

One of the more famous SUVs is the Toyota Land Cruiser. This car has a 65-year history. During this time, he gained great popularity around the world and became one of the most famous and widespread SUVs. At the same time, unlike many analogues, the Land Cruiser has retained its classic off-road design to this day. This article examines the past generation of the Land Cruiser 100 ".

Origin

This car has been produced since 1951. This is the model of the manufacturer with the longest history. Toyota 100 series is its 10th generation in the Japanese market and 4th among those sold in the Russian market. The car was presented in 1997, and the next one was launched on sale. It is the descendant of the 80 series and the predecessor of the now on the assembly line

Body

The car has a classic SUV frame structure and a 5-door station wagon body, called Station Wagon in the manufacturer's classification. In comparison with its predecessor, the Toyota 100 series has increased the body length by 70 mm, width by 10 mm. As a result, these parameters reached 1.94 m and 4.89 m, respectively, and the height is 1.86 m.The mass of the machine is 2.545 tons.

It should be noted that the Toyota Land Cruiser 100 diesel had a frame of a different design than the gasoline variants. In addition, depending on the market and equipment, the cars differed in the design of the rear door. So, on the simplest trim levels, as well as on versions for some markets, it is represented by two swing parts, one of which has a spare wheel. But most cars have a hinged tailgate. Finally, the versions for the Arabian and African markets are distinguished by the presence of two gas tanks.

On this model, the safety has been significantly increased in comparison with the 80 series. For this, shock-absorbing elements were built into the frame, and the doors were equipped with stiffeners. The body panels of the Toyota Land Cruiser 100 are made of high-strength sheet steel. We also expanded the list of active safety systems. The standard equipment on the first cars included 2 front airbags. Later added side cushions and curtains. Also, Toyota 100 series was equipped with ABS, TRC (traction control system), EBD, BAS (auxiliary braking system), VSC (stabilization system).

Chassis

The car retained the design of the chassis from the Land Cruiser 80. The front suspension is independent of the double wishbone type on torsion bars, the rear suspension is dependent with a continuous axle on springs. An exception is the 105 series, which is equipped with a continuous axle and front. In comparison with its predecessor, the attachment points of the rear suspension arms have been changed in order to increase the smoothness of the ride. In addition, the front and rear wheel tracks have been widened. This has improved sustainability. Some versions were equipped with a suspension with hydraulic elements that provide the ability to change the ground clearance and maintain it regardless of the load.

On the initial versions, the rear brakes are drum, on the higher configurations, disc brakes are installed on all wheels, on the front ones - ventilated mechanisms.

The wheel size is 16-18 inches, depending on the equipment.

Engines

Toyota 100 series was equipped with five power units: two gasoline and three diesel. At the same time, most of them were presented in different markets with different settings.

2UZ-FE. It is an 8-cylinder V-shaped power unit that develops 235 hp. With. and 422 Nm. The most powerful engine available for a Land Cruiser of this generation, but not in all markets, since, in addition to the mentioned option, it existed in 231 hp versions. sec., 410 Nm and 205 liters. sec., 360 Nm (both up to 2002). After the first restyling, its performance was increased to 238 hp. With. and 434 Nm. In 2005, a forced version of the engine was added, equipped with a VVT system, which develops 275 hp. With. and 450 Nm.

1FZ-FE. In-line six-cylinder engine from the Land Cruiser 80 range. Develops 212 hp. With. and 373 Nm or 224 liters. sec., 387 Nm depending on the settings. This power unit was used before the 2005 restyling.

Diesel versions are represented by one engine in three modifications: atmospheric, turbocharged and bi-turbocharged.

1HD-FTE. The diesel engine is similar in design to the previous one, but equipped with a turbocharger. Its power is 205 liters. sec., torque - 431 Nm. Before restyling in 2002, there was a simplified version with indicators of 167 liters. With. power and 360 Nm of torque.

In some markets, until 2002, the diesel engine was introduced in a biturbo version with a capacity of 250 hp. With.

Transmission

Initially, Toyota 100 series offered a 4-speed A3343F and a 5-speed manual Aisin H151F. Since 2002, the automatic transmission has been replaced with a 5-speed Aisin A750. On the first post-styling turbodiesel versions, there was the Aisin A440, and the 4.5 liter cars for some markets until 2006 were equipped with the Aisin A340. Both of these automatic transmissions are 4-speed.

2UZ-FE was equipped exclusively with automatic transmission: in the first versions it was 4-speed, after restyling in 2002, 5-speed.

For the 1FZ-FE, both a manual 5-speed and an automatic (4-speed before restyling in 2002 and a 5-speed after) gearbox were offered.

The 1HZ was equipped exclusively with a 5-speed manual transmission.

For the 1HD-FTE, 5-speed manual and automatic (up to 2002 4-speed) transmissions were offered.

Most versions were equipped with permanent all-wheel drive with a low gear and a symmetrical center differential with a rigid lock. Although there were also options with a plug-in front axle and a two-stage transfer case without a center differential.

Interior

Despite the fact that the Land Cruiser 80 was still considered a high-class car, the Toyota 100 series significantly outstripped it. First, the dimensions of the cabin were increased: the length increased by 90 mm, the width - by 70 mm. Secondly, they began to use better finishing materials, especially after the restyling of 2002. Thirdly, they significantly improved noise and vibration insulation. Thanks to all this, the interiors of the maximum trim levels began to correspond to the business-class sedans. At the same time, there were also simple versions with a modest interior trim.

The car was available in 5- and 7-seater versions.

Restyling

During production, the Land Cruiser 100 has undergone 2 upgrades. The first restyling was carried out in 2002. Externally, the bumpers, radiator grill, headlight linings, headlights were changed. Toyota 100 series has also undergone technical changes. So, the 4-speed automatic transmission was replaced with a 5-speed one. In addition, we excluded the simple versions of the 2UZ-FE and 1HD-FTE engines, as well as the biturbo version of the latter.

The second modernization took place in 2005. External changes were more modest: they affected only the headlights, a radiator grille and headlamp linings. The 1FZ-FE was excluded from the range of motors, but a forced version of the 2UZ-FE appeared.

Market place

Land Cruiser 100 is highly valued in the secondary market, therefore it slowly loses in price and costs significantly more than many analogues from other manufacturers of the same age. So, even the most worn-out cars are estimated at more than 600 thousand rubles, while the price of the best copies exceeds 1.5 million rubles.

Most of all on the market are Land Cruisers equipped with V8, half that with a turbodiesel. Aspirated diesel versions are even rarer, not to mention six-cylinder and twin-turbo diesels.

During production, the model was very popular all over the world. This was facilitated by the very broad scope of the Toyota 100. The characteristics of the 105 version made it possible to use it in the most difficult conditions. They were also used at the UN. At the same time, Land Cruisers of higher trim levels were used instead of premium sedans.

Moreover, there was a luxury version of the Land Cruiser 100: the Lexus LX470. Originally developed for the American market, the car was equipped exclusively with 2UZ-FE and hydraulic suspension. It differs from Toyota in expanded equipment and improved interior trim.

The breadth of application determines the modifications of Toyota 100. Tuning of simple versions is usually aimed at increasing off-road capabilities, while the maximum configurations focused on road use, increasing comfort.

Reliability

High endurance in the most difficult conditions, proven by years of operation, is due to the reliability of the Toyota 100. Reviews testify to this.

The most reliable engines are 1HZ and 2UZ-FE. Both of them, with proper maintenance, overcome the line of 500 thousand km without overhaul. 1HD-FTE is more demanding in terms of maintenance and fuel quality: once every 40 thousand km, you need to adjust the valves and change the timing belt every 120 thousand km. Possible breakdown of the injection pump at 150 thousand km.

Gearboxes are equally reliable and as durable as engines, provided the oil is changed every 50 thousand km. By the same time, oxidation of the inter-axle blocking is possible. And with the same frequency, you need to change the grease in the wheel bearings and inject the crosspieces of the propeller shafts.

The suspension is also very reliable. Usually, by 140 thousand km, amotisers and ball joints wear out, a little later the steering mechanism and by 40 thousand km is less reliable and more expensive to repair, but it can be turned into an ordinary one.

The body is well protected against corrosion. Weaknesses - the bottom of the fifth door, the windshield frame.

In January 1998, the "eightieth" Land Cruiser was replaced by the "hundredth". By that time, the name Land Cruiser had already become a household name and was perceived as a symbol of reliability, endurance and cross-country ability, therefore, this particular car was massively purchased by the UN for itself. Several new engines were developed for the "hundred": a gasoline V8 2UZ-FE (4.7 liters, 235 hp) and a 1HD-FTE diesel (in-line "six", 4.2 liters, 205 hp). Also offered the time-tested 4.5 liter inline "six" 1FZ, well known from the "eighty". In some markets, the 1HD-FTE engine was equipped with a bi-turbocharger, already removing 250 hp from it. The atmospheric modification of this engine (1HZ), which produced 135 hp, was also preserved. The creation of the V8 engine was dictated by the entry of Toyota into the American market of the full-size SUV segment (the “luxury” analogue of the “hundredth” - Lexus LX470, as well as Toyota Sequoia, built on the units of the “hundredth” Cruiser, were sold overseas). Two boxes were offered: MKP-5 and AKP-4. Later, the automatic became a five-speed. The drive is permanent full, with a low gear. As an option, a rear cross-axle differential lock was offered.
They tried to make the car more comfortable: the continuous axle in front gave way to an independent suspension on double levers, the steering became rack and pinion. To further enhance driving comfort and stability, the Skyhook TEMS and Hydraulic Ground Clearance System (ANS) have been introduced to improve vehicle performance when driving on uneven roads. Later, the A-TRC and VSC systems were added, which worked well on the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 90. The "stalled" Land Cruiser deserves a separate discussion. In fact, it was a deeply modernized "eighty", but in the back of the "hundredth". The car retained two continuous axles, had all differential locks (center and interwheel), had a narrower track than the "hundredth", was equipped only with MKP-5 and only six-cylinder in-line engines. It is not surprising that in Russia the 105th became a hit among fans of heavy off-roading. Unlike the "hundredth", it had a double hinged rear door (against the lift one at the "hundredth"), the interior was more modest, and the configuration was poorer.
The seventh generation Land Cruiser has undergone re-styling several times, during which the headlights, radiator grill, lights were updated, the configuration was changed. In 2001, Toyota celebrated the 50th anniversary of the model. According to the company's marketers, nearly 4 million Land Cruisers of all generations have been sold in the world market. In honor of the anniversary, a special edition of these iconic vehicles, "50th Anniversary", has been released. The anniversary editions feature chrome-plated aluminum wheels, a commemorative emblem on the body, a leather and wood-trimmed steering wheel, special door sills and gold-colored logos. In addition, the gear lever and doors are also finished in wood and the interior is in ivory leather. The circulation of the Land Cruiser - 50th Anniversary was very limited - so, only 400 of these cars arrived in Russia. Sales started in 2007
