What tires fit r17 wheels. Tire calculator

09.12.2021
You may need such a calculator if you want to install, instead of standard tires or disks, their analogs, but of a different standard size. With its help, you can visually represent dimensional changes and only then interpret them for a specific car. At the same time, the calculator is not a tool for selecting tires and wheels, since it does not contain a database of manufacturers.

When replacing disks and tires, taking into account the geometric data obtained from tire calculator, it will not be superfluous to make several measurements yourself. First, the distance from the suspension to the inner surface of the wheel, and also from the shock absorber cup to the tread surface. Secondly, from the wing, as well as the steering rods to the tread surface. At the same time, the geometric parameters of the new wheel assembly should not greatly exceed the size of standard tires and disks. Otherwise, unstable behavior of the vehicle may occur.

A few basic rules to remember when changing tires and wheels.

  1. The tread of summer tires has a standard depth of 0.8-1 cm;
  2. When installing discs with a larger diameter than the standard ones, it is necessary to reduce the overhang value - for every inch of the height of 3 mm overhang;
  3. It is not uncommon for the hub bores on discs that are not original to have a larger diameter. Therefore, when installing them, you need to use special rings for fixing;
  4. In the event that the hole on the disc is smaller than the hub mounts, it is strictly forbidden to drill them out, as well as grind the hub itself;
  5. Correct selection of non-original disks using a calculator will allow you to preserve the driving characteristics of the car;
  6. If you are not sure about the compatibility of tires or wheels with your car, it is better not to install, or contact specialists for help.

Any car moves on the road on wheels, so sooner or later they wear out and the owner is faced with a difficult choice of new tires and wheels. These two components are closely related to each other, and for the correct selection of the most optimal combination, there is a special table of correspondence of tires and wheels.

However, before choosing wheels and tires for a particular car, you should understand their symbols, labeling and classification.

Design features

Structurally, a wheel consists of a rim and a tire, which is assembled from the actual disc part and the rim (therefore, it is not entirely correct to call a wheel a disc), on which a rubber tire is put on. The wheel has many characteristics and dimensions, the main of which are the rim diameter, the wheel overhang relative to the mating surface, the number and diameter of the holes for installing the wheel on the hub, as well as the landing width of the rim on which the tire is installed. The last parameter is the most important, as the profile width must be in line with the rim width.

Selection of disks and tires

Each car manufacturer sets its own permissible wheel and tire sizes. For some models, they can differ within fairly strong limits, however, it should be understood that the basic version, which is usually equipped with cars in the standard, is universal, satisfying all the basic characteristics and needs. However, the wide range of dimensions means the ability to select and customize the car for specific tastes.

Most manufacturers indicate in the operating instructions the correspondence of tires and wheels. Guided by them, you can accurately choose the appropriate option.

The second selection criterion is to check the location of the tire in the wheel arch and fit the rubber directly on the wheel. This is done empirically and is used in non-standard cases when tuning a car.

The main combinations of different sizes of tires and wheels are shown in the table.

Marking and conventions

All rims and tires are provided with a conditional marking, which contains detailed information about their geometric dimensions. When buying new rims and tires, the owner should know what they mean. As an example, consider the standard wheel of the domestic "Priora" or "Grants". It has the designation R14 4 × 98 d58.5 ET35 J5.5.

R14 is the landing (outer) diameter of the wheel rim, indicated in inches.

4 × 98 - indicates the number of holes for fastening the disc to the hub, as well as the diameter of the circle along which they are drilled. Indicated in millimeters.

D58.5 is the diameter of the central hole. It matches the diameter of the hub cap.

ET35 - wheel rim overhang relative to the mating surface (the place where it comes into contact with the hub). The larger it is, the more the wheel will protrude to the side. Indicated in millimeters.

J5.5 is the width of the rim in inches.
Tire sizes are also coded with special designations. For example, consider a 195 / 55R16 tire.

The letter "R" in the marking denotes the radial design of the tire - its metal carcass is located in the radial plane, from side to side perpendicular to the radius, in contrast to the outdated bias tires, where the carcass is located at an angle.

195 - tire profile width in millimeters.

15 is the landing diameter of the tire, indicated in inches. It must match the dimension of the wheel rim.

55 - the percentage ratio of the height of the profile of the tire to its width, i.e. in this case, the profile height is 55% of its width, about 107mm.
For jeeps and crossovers, the tire classification is the same, but there are still differences. Correspondence of tire and wheel sizes for SUVs is presented in the table.

The basics of making the right choice

In order to choose the right tires and wheels for your car, in addition to referring to the size table, you should take into account several points.

The first is the preferred operating conditions. It is no secret that by installing a wheel rim of a larger diameter and a tire with a lower profile height, you can withstand the required maximum diameter and it will fit into the arch. However, this tire will make the ride harder. If the car mainly drives on bad roads, then such rubber will not only shake the driver and passengers, but also reduce the life of the chassis.

The second is the width of the tires and disks. A wider tire has a larger contact patch with the road, which means more rolling resistance. In addition, wider tires will create more aerodynamic drag. Such a wheel is, after all, just heavier. Therefore, they will in any case entail an increase in operating costs. Even the best summer tires with different widths have completely different effects on efficiency and other purely physical parameters.

The third point is the compliance of the wheel rim in terms of the diameter of the central hole, drilling of the mounting holes and the size of the wheel rim overhang. If the central hole is small, then the disc simply cannot be installed on the hub, and if it is large, then it will only be held by being pulled by bolts or nuts, and when they are loosened, it will dangle.

If the diameter of the holes for the studs or bolts does not match, the wheel will also be impossible to install. Alternatively, adapter spacers can be supplied.

The last significant factor is the departure size. It directly affects the track width and handling of the vehicle. Without going into details, we can say that a wheel with a long overhang is worse controlled and the resource of the hub bearings and ball bearings is reduced. In addition, such wheels can hit the edges of the wheel arches when turning.

The most correct will be the selection of tires for the car, with an orientation to the instruction manual. The manufacturer's recommended averages provide the best combination of vehicle performance and driving safety.

With the help of a tire calculator, you can easily calculate how the outer dimensions of the wheel, the height of the ground clearance (clearance), the speedometer readings and other characteristics will change when tires with a different standard size are installed on your car. The calculator calculates all tire sizes in millimeters, and the vehicle speed in km / h.
And also the calculator will help to calculate the required rim width for a specific tire size.

How to use the tire calculator:

First enter the standard size installed on your car, and then the one that you want to install and click "calculate". The table on the right shows the results of the calculator's calculations.
Detailed information on tire marking in the section: tire marking.

We recommend that you only install the factory tire sizes that are specified in the operating instructions for your machine. Installation of non-standard sizes may void the dealer's warranty, as well as impair the performance and handling of the vehicle.

When converting tire sizes on a calculator, keep in mind that:

With an increase in the diameter of the rim (and, as a consequence, a decrease in the height of the tire profile, so that the outer diameter of the wheel remains unchanged), the load on the car's suspension increases, and comfort also deteriorates (the car will become noticeably stiffer).

With an excessive increase in the profile of the tire, the car becomes a "roll", it is less controlled and at critical values of the height of the profile, the tire can begin to cling to the parts of the body and suspension of the car, which will subsequently lead to its destruction.

In order to choose the right tires for the disks, you need to know certain parameters, failure to adhere to which will seriously worsen the car's behavior on the road. Since the tire is put on the rim of the rim, the width of the profile must be proportional to it. Immediately, we note that, despite the tuning widespread in recent years, automakers categorically do not recommend it. After all, if the sizes of disks and tires are very different, then the contact patch will not be even, which means that the control may get out of control.

In general, the question of the correspondence of tires and disks can be viewed from two sides. The first is the selection of tires and wheels based on the manufacturer's recommendations, and the second is this fitment. Fitment is the study of the fit of the tire on the rim and the position of the wheels in relation to the wheel arches, which includes negative camber, low landing and other delights that we will not talk about, since we consider it more important to tell how to choose the right one from the point of view of safety and comfort tires to disks.

In order to choose the right tires for the rims, you need to know the labeling of the rims.

Ideally, that is, to be sure of safety, the PCD disc (the diameter of the circle of the centers of the mounting holes) should not be changed. In an extreme case, the dimensions of the rims and tires may not correspond to each other at all, but then eccentric bolts are used for fastening, which allow you to install rims with PCD 100 mm on cars with PCD 98 mm. However, it is worth noting that the maximum difference in displacement should not exceed 2 mm, and ideally, the alignment of tires and disks should be one hundred percent.

The dimensions of the disks and tires must also match with their central hole, but if for certain reasons this is not possible, an adjusting ring will come to the rescue (it is also a spacer ring). The setting ring has an outer diameter equal to the diameter of the hole in the disc, and the inner diameter corresponds to the diameter of the car hub. If the setting ring is put correctly, then the running characteristics will not change. It should be noted that the discs do not have stamped locating rings. Install them only on.

The disc markings do not indicate the maximum load ( MAX LOAD), you can find out this parameter either in the passport that some manufacturers of domestic wheels attach to their products, or look for this information on the website of the wheel manufacturer. This information is not very important, as manufacturers usually make discs with a margin of safety. But, if for some reason you decide to put, say, disks for a car on a jeep, then the maximum disk load will be an important parameter. And if you do not take it into account, the wheel may not withstand the load and deform, even falling into a small hole.

In addition, even if the tire and wheel sizes are the same in all respects, there is still a risk that the wheel will not fit on the car. The reason for this is the so-called X-factor, when the disc rests against the suspension parts or the caliper, which is associated with the form of stamping or casting. Therefore, we recommend that you first try it on before mounting a tire on a wheel.

The markings of tires made in America are very different from European designations. Therefore, drivers constantly have to convert inches to millimeters or centimeters. Only after carrying out such calculations, you can choose the right wheel for your car.

29 inch

The Russian SUV is produced with wheels, the diameter of which is slightly smaller than that of a conventional SUV. The standard size of foreign machines is 29 inches or 235 / 75R15.

The domestic off-road vehicle (Niva) is completed at the factory with wheels 175 / 80R15. On such tires, the car quickly buries itself in the mud, moves with difficulty on our off-road.

To remedy this situation, it is necessary to install a 29-inch rubber. It will increase the ground clearance by 25 mm. Fitting 31-inch tires will increase the ground clearance by 50 mm. To install such wheels, you only need to change the wheel arches. You will need to increase their dimensions.

Inch system

Most SUVs use tires labeled 31x10.5R15.

31 here stands for the inch diameter of the wheel. One inch, as you know, corresponds to two and a half centimeters, and to be exact, 2.54 cm.In other words, after translation, D will be equal to 78.7 cm.

Such marking is quite in demand, since it is convenient, since it shows the size of the wheel with the parameters of the disc already taken into account.

The dimensions of the wheel diameter 31x10.5R15 are practically equal to the tire with the designation 31x10.5R16. The only difference will be the reduction of the tire profile by 2.5 cm.

10.5 is the width of the rubber in inches. But this value is not entirely accurate, since when converted from inches to traditional centimeters, it will turn out to be 26.5 cm.

However, when measuring this value with an ordinary ruler, the value will fluctuate within 23 cm.Only if the tire has a width index of 12.5, it will be possible to talk about a width of 26.5 cm.

You should always remember about such a nuance if you decide to install the maximum tire size in the arch of an SUV.

Metric system

This measurement system is much more difficult to use. Take rubber labeled 265-75-15.

265 mm - tire width. As in the inch system, its actual width will be approximately 230-235 mm.

75 - profile height in millimeters. To get the true value, you need to take 75% of 265 mm. It will be 198.75 mm. Then this number is multiplied by two. This is because the total wheel diameter is equal to D of the disc plus twice the profile height.

In our case, it equals 15 inches. As a result, after the calculations, we get the D disk of 381 mm. Total D of wheels: 397.5 + 381 = 778 mm or 77.8 centimeters.

R15 - radial rubber. Rim diameter is in inches. Always surprising. Why is the inch designation left in the metric system?

If you look closely at these two systems, you will notice a slight difference, approximately 1.1 centimeters. It does not in any way affect the design and installation of the wheels.

Today on the Internet for the correct calculation of the size of the tire, a large number of different calculators are offered. All of them work completely free of charge and make finding the right tire size much easier.
