After restyling, engines with direct injection and turbocharging appeared on cars. All the problems with the N-series motors remained, but new ones also appeared. The Bosch fuel pump can also cause problems. So, there are more problems with direct injection. But on the other hand, there are advantages to direct injection engines - they have less sensitivity to detonation, and lower fuel consumption. But there is also a turbine here, which also often fails.

M-version

The most charged X5M package contains the S63B44 motor, which is based on the N63B44. This is an engine with a volume of 4.4, the turbines are located here in a special way - in the collapse of the cylinder block. This arrangement gave the catalysts a quick warm-up and improved access to the turbines. The main thing is not to overheat the motor, because then there will be a lot of problems.

From high temperatures, plastic parts quickly fail after 3 years of driving. Parts of the cooling system and wiring often fail. This concerned the N63B44 motor, but the M-motor has fewer problems, because it has a lower operating temperature. The valve stem seals hold the oil better, the catalyst lasts longer.

But since the engine has high technical characteristics, the turbines can fail, the control systems fail, and the plastic on the intake manifolds cannot withstand. There are more direct injection nozzles - 8 pieces. Timing chains are quite thin, they can easily stretch or break when worn. All of this must be monitored.

In general, gasoline engines are not as good as we would like, the operating temperature is high and there is a lot of plastic in the design, we need to somehow correct this situation - to reduce the operating temperature.

Diesel motors

But diesel engines for the X5 E70 are much better made. Even on pre-styling cars there is a reliable M57 engine, in recent years this engine is considered one of the best. Timing chains serve from 160 to 250 thousand km. depending on the operation. On cars with 2 turbines, it often happens that oil flows from the pipes that go to the turbines.

The particulate filter can also be difficult, it is not cheap and it is not easy to get it out of the car. But a diesel engine does not eat oil, a piston engine lasts a long time, there are also no problems with vanos and "valvtronic". It has good traction, you can even do chip tuning and the power will really increase.

The power of diesel engines is different: from 235 to 286 hp. with. Motors with 2 turbines are more complex, but compared to gasoline engines, diesels require less money for maintenance. The main thing is to fill in high-quality fuel and change the oil with filters in time. After restyling, they began to install new diesel engines N57, but in terms of reliability, they did not become worse.

Which BMW X5 to choose?

Diesel engines have also changed. Now they were presented with a 3-liter N57 in versions: 30d (245 hp), the old 35d (265 hp), a new 3-liter with 2 turbines 40d (306 hp) and from 2011 M50d (381 hp).

A feature of gasoline 3-liter engines assembled before November 2008 is the knock of hydraulic lifters on a cold one or after several short runs without full warming up.
