How to open the trunk. The trunk won't open - what should I do? Additional information about trunk “illnesses”

23.10.2020

You often have to deal with malfunctions of the trunk lock - the culprit is the constant contact of dirt on the cylinder when driving, and the key being simply forgotten in the trunk. On some machines this is even a congenital disease - for example, on Renault Logan In the first generation, an attempt to simultaneously turn and press the cylinder with a key very likely leads to the rod flying off the cylinder and, as a consequence, to the impossibility of opening the trunk. So it’s always worth knowing how to open the trunk of your car as quickly as possible and without damage.

How to open the trunk with different types of locks?

Mechanical locks

Mechanics on hatchbacks and station wagons are the simplest case - if access to the interior is preserved: we are dealing with a breakdown, and not with a single set of keys forgotten inside. You need to recline the seat backs and remove the rear parcel shelf, if there is one, to gain access to the interior of the trunk.
Structurally, two options are possible:

  1. when the rear of the trunk door is completely closed by the trim;
  2. or there is a separate hatch above the lock.

The second option is preferable - by opening only the hatch, we find the broken rod or, conversely, remove it if the cylinder does not turn. To open the trunk, we pull or push the rod, depending on the kinematics of the lock.

If the trim completely covers the door, then it is impossible to remove it when the trunk is closed. In this case, you will have to get to the lock mechanics by unscrewing the accessible fasteners or pulling out the open pistons, and then carefully bending the casing on top towards you.
But this is not always required - look carefully at the lock, is there a forced release tab on it? It hides in a small groove; we pry it open with a key or a thin screwdriver. Sometimes it's even signed.

On sedans, access is difficult or impossible - the presence of a separate volume often pushes designers to place stiffening crossbars behind non-reclining seat backs, or there may be a gas tank there, as on the Mercedes-Benz W124. If the backrests recline or, at worst, there is a wide enough hatch for long cargo, then it will be possible to get into the trunk, otherwise this method will work when we unscrew the backrest from the passenger compartment and remove the cross member. A classic example of such a car is the Renault Logan already mentioned in the introduction: first we pull out the bottom cushion, then we unscrew the two bolts that secure the backrest from below. It is pushed up, after which, after unscrewing the four bolts securing the cross member, we climb into the trunk.

Pneumatic locks

The lock actuator does not necessarily have a mechanical drive - the trunk also opens pneumatically, which for owners of old German cars known. If all pneumatics are controlled by a common compressor accessible from the cabin, we get to it (usually by removing the bottom cushion of the rear sofa) and blow into the desired tube. The reason the trunk lock fails in such cars is cracks in the tube, due to which there is not enough pressure to open the trunk. By using a tire compressor or pump, we are more likely to open the door if the tube has not completely burst.

Power locks

What to do if there is no cylinder or pull system on the door, but only a button? Moreover, it is the corrosion of the contacts of these buttons that prevents the trunk from opening.
IN similar cars The control of the electric trunk is controlled by the on-board switching module - BCM. To force open the trunk lock, we close the terminal to which the faulty button is connected to ground. On Nissan Qashqai The lock control diagram looks like this:

By closing pin 12 on the BCM, we will force the trunk to open.
Naturally, there are also mechanical methods of opening: in this case, as with a mechanical lock, we will have to climb into the trunk. There are two options:

  1. with monoblock lock;
  2. or with an actuator connected to the lock through a rod.

In the first case, you will have to remove the cover from the lock to get to the mechanical part and manually release the locking tongue; in the second case, we disconnect the rod and use it to open the trunk.

Hacking the trunk lock

But what to do if you don’t get into the cabin, or you don’t get into the trunk from it? The larva will have to be rolled up. To do this, you will need a bayonet-type screwdriver, preferably with a square handle at the end - drive it into the cylinder and turn it out until the locking plates inside the cylinder burst and it begins to rotate freely. This is an extreme method, after which the larva will have to be replaced.

If you have time, the tool for opening the cylinder is made from durable hexagons or “torxes” of a curved type: carefully, without overheating the metal, we grind one end until it gives it a shape similar to the shank of a key, after which we drive the resulting tool into the cylinder.

The main problem when roughly opening the cylinder is that it is often not the cylinder that rotates, but the metal of the trunk lid itself, the grooves of which hold the base of the cylinder in place. On a VAZ of the “classic” family, you will most likely turn the lock on the door rather than roll the cylinder. After this, it is problematic to install a new one - the solution to restoring functionality will be to install a plug in the deformed hole, and on the locking and opening rods - electromechanical drives for 5-10 kilograms of effort.

Cases when, just after slamming the trunk of the car, you remember that the keys were left inside, are not so rare. But before you panic, try to calm down and read our article to the end.

How to open the trunk without a key?

For some reason, the problem of how to open the trunk if the key is lost most often arises among VAZ owners. We will focus our attention on these cars. So, you can get inside the locked trunk from the passenger compartment. Top back rear seat classic VAZ attached with two guides, there are two hinges at the bottom, which are visible from the rear door. At this point we bend the tabs welded to the car body, pull off the bottom of the backrest and push it up. Thus, the path to the partition between the passenger compartment and the trunk becomes open. We move the partition aside and start making a knob extension with a 10 mm head at the end, otherwise we won’t be able to get the lock fastening nuts. To avoid dropping the head, it is better to tape it to the collar with tape. And, of course, we need a flashlight. It’s good if you can unscrew both lock nuts the first time, but even if not the first time, it’s not that difficult to do. Opened door trunk will be our reward. Although you shouldn’t rush to disassemble half the interior. It is likely that the trunk lock of our VAZ will be opened with some other key, even if taken from the neighbors.

Other methods are also known. In the case of a VAZ 2106, for example, you need to take a not very thick but strong slotted screwdriver and insert it into the gap between the body and the trunk lid directly under the lock. You can try to open an old, designed lock with any key of less or the same thickness as the “original” one. It must be inserted carefully, no deeper than 0.5-1.0 cm while trying to turn it. Some craftsmen even perform this operation with a long slotted screwdriver.

The trunk can be opened using the door key. It must be inserted vertically, and once inserted, rotate it 90° to a horizontal position. After turning it, take out the key and press harder on the lock cylinder with your finger. Well, a completely radical method is to open the lock with a strong kick of the foot just below the lock, but we will not recommend this to our readers.

How to open the trunk lock on a Volga?

To do this, you need to stock up on stiff wire with a diameter of about 2.5 - 3 mm, and remove the rubber seal around the lock. We make a 45° hook from wire, about 8 cm long, and insert it between the lock and the trunk lid. The task is to press the rod that opens the lock. If there is another Volga nearby, it is useful, before starting the operation, to refresh your memory of the design of the lock by examining it in your neighbor’s car.

But one should not think that problems with opening the trunk haunt owners exclusively domestic cars mobiles. For example, experienced owners of old Mercedes 600 know that this problem solved by entering the luggage space through the first aid kit niche in the rear parcel shelf.

Many drivers have found themselves in a situation where the car trunk keys were lost or otherwise inaccessible. If at this moment there is an urgent need to open the trunk, the car owner has to make a difficult choice - break the lock or try to open the trunk using more gentle methods.

Before you try to open the trunk without a key, it makes sense to try to find the lost kit, since in the absence of experience, the trunk lock can easily be broken or the car’s paintwork damaged. It is worth understanding that if the trunk is opened without a key and in a crowded place, the documents for the car should be at hand and in perfect order - chances are that the driver’s actions will be of interest law enforcement agencies big enough.

Ways to open the trunk without a key

If there are other motorists nearby, especially those with similar car models, you can try to open the trunk using their keys. Quite often, especially on domestic cars, this step brings positive results, and after several attempts the trunk can be opened without damaging the fragile lock mechanism. If this option does not work, you can try other methods.

Through the salon

If you have access to the interior, you can open the trunk through it by removing the rear seat. For domestic classics, you will need a certain set of tools: a 10mm head and an extension cord for it. To open the lock, two nuts securing the lock itself are unscrewed. Before starting work, it is better to put a flashlight in the trunk - this will make the work much more convenient. If the nuts can be unscrewed, the trunk can be opened by simply pressing the lock cylinder from the outside - the entire lock will fall inside. After this, all that remains is to assemble the entire structure again.

Sometimes brute force will help

Again on domestic cars or not the newest foreign cars, another method can help. There is some free space above the license plate. Very often, a sharp and strong enough blow to this area allows you to open the trunk without a key. This is explained by the fact that the metal will play together with the lock, and for a moment the lock tongue will move away from the strike plate. It is better to strike with your fist - it is not advisable to use any tool, since you can damage the paintwork or leave a noticeable dent on the car.

Physical strength may also be required when using the following method, which, of course, is not applicable to every car. On some models, you can open the trunk by sharply moving its lid to the side - the method is not the most effective, but on domestic classics it works quite well. Some drivers use an awl - they pierce the rubber seal running along the perimeter and move the lock tongue away. If the car is old enough, you can try using it instead lost key a manicure nail file - sometimes this method is effective.

Help from a traffic police officer

Despite some absurdity of the situation, traffic police officers can help you open the trunk without a key. Of course, not every inspector has sufficient skills in opening other people's trunks, but experienced employees often encounter surprising forgetfulness of the owners of the cars being inspected. Thus, the inspector has many ways to open a car without a key. When resorting to the help of law enforcement officers, you should be prepared to present all necessary documents- personal and car. For foreign cars, the method shown in the video may be useful:

If gentle measures do not help

When it is impossible to open the trunk using the methods described above, the keys are not found, a duplicate was not made in advance, there is only one way left - it is also called non-returnable. To implement it, you will need a flat screwdriver - its tip is inserted instead of the original key into the lock, and with the help of pliers, the cylinder is turned. It, of course, breaks, and in the future you will have to replace the entire lock with a new one. The cost of the lock, as a rule, is not so high, so if the need to open the lid exceeds the financial costs, this method can be used.

The procedure for subsequent lock replacement is no different and is completed within 10-15 minutes. You will need to do the following:

  • unscrew the fastening bolts securing the lock to the lid;
  • the lock is removed, and the plastic sleeve along with the sealing ring is also removed;
  • a new one is installed, firmly fixed with nuts.

When installing a new device, it is important not to screw it in tightly right away. First, it is baited, several test openings/closings of the lid are made, and only after that the fasteners are fully tightened. In order to avoid getting into such an unpleasant situation, it makes sense to make duplicates of all car keys in advance, and each car owner will decide where to store them independently.

Domestic and foreign car brands are equipped with both internal and external luggage racks. Their opening and closing, depending on the type of lock, can be performed either using a mechanical key or using a control panel. The locking mechanisms of modern trunks are characterized by reliability and have good performance characteristics and long service life. However, sometimes it may be necessary to open the trunk due to a malfunction.

Common causes of breakdowns

  • The battery is discharged, which is why the lock cannot be opened with the key.
  • The trunk slammed shut, the keys remained inside.
  • The electric drive of the car's locking mechanism has broken down.
  • Opening the trunk of a car is often required in the autumn-winter period, when negative air temperatures cause the lock to freeze.
  • The control panel antenna is worn out and no signal is received.
  • Foreign objects have entered the actuator.
  • The lock cylinder is covered with rust.
  • Opening trunks may also be necessary after road accidents.

How to open the trunk?

If you have any problems opening the lock, you can try to solve them on your own. There are several ways to open a car trunk yourself:

  • The internal trunk of the car can be opened from inside the cabin. To do this, you need to remove the rear seat to gain access to the locking mechanism. Then unscrew the nuts that secure it and press the cylinder from the outside. The lock will fall in and the trunk will open.
  • The outer trunk can be opened as follows: insert a flat-head screwdriver into the keyhole, then use pliers to turn the core. The core will break, after which the lock will open.
  • Universal method for all trunks - physical impact: by hitting the area where the lock is located, you can open it without a key. Under the influence of an impact, the tongue of the locking mechanism will move away from the mating part.

It is important to remember: after such actions the lock will become unusable and will have to be completely replaced. Therefore, it is better to call a specialist. LOCKSERVICE specialists have been working with car mechanisms for more than five years. The accumulated experience allows us to perform an emergency opening of the trunk in a short time. A set of high-tech tools guarantees work without damage to the mechanisms and surface of the car.

The lock always breaks at the wrong moment. This can be said about all locks, but in this case we’ll talk about a broken car trunk lock. This is especially true for cars domestic production and according to the “law of meanness”, the trunk lock does not obey the owner, very often, in emergency situations. And during long trips, and even on daily trips, such meanness makes the car trunk impossible to replace a broken tire, get a pump, keys, etc. In order to avoid getting into an unpleasant situation, every car enthusiast should be able to open the trunk without a key. Let's talk about it.

Trunk lock, how to open the trunk lock on a five-door or three-door car

If you are the owner of a crossover, SUV, hatchback - a car with an odd number of doors - when opening the trunk in an emergency, you should not have problems.

Your task is to get into the cargo compartment from inside the car, and to do this, first of all, fold down the rear seats.

After the rear seats are folded down, on the inside of the odd door of the car you will see a special handle.

Pressing this handle will open the tailgate and allow you to repair the lock.

But there are times when there is no handle on the inside, and the lock drive does not obey the owner of the car.

In this case, the car owner is faced with the task of dismantling the door trim.

You will have to remove the plastic panel from the cargo door.

Under the plastic panel there is a trunk lock in the form of a metal mechanism.

To dismantle the trunk lock, you need a special tool in the form of a wrench with a complete set of sockets; select the desired head for the bolts and use the wrench to disassemble the trunk lock.

When working with the lock, pay attention to the trunk door; you need to prevent the door from opening suddenly upward, so hold the door.

Careful handling will prevent hand injuries.

If you need to close the trunk door after disassembling the lock, try inserting a screwdriver into the trunk lock and turning the hinge that holds the car door.

Trunk lock, how to open the trunk lock on a car with an even number of doors

If you have a sedan or coupe with a broken trunk lock, you have a more difficult task ahead of you.

If possible, lower the backrest of the rear seat, and if this old foreign car or a domestic car - the back of the rear seat will have to be removed completely.

The rear seats of these cars are attached with hinges that are directly welded to the body; you will have to bend these hinges.

After the rear seat back is removed, evaluate the possibility of entering the trunk from internal space car.

Approximately 50x50 cars, allows you to get from the passenger compartment to the trunk. Take a flashlight with you, carefully inspect the inside of the trunk, if you cannot get into the trunk, try to make a hook on a long handle and if the lock is simple, open it using this hook. You can make an extension for the knob and use the extension to open the lock.

But on some cars you have to remove the trim, the trim will have to be removed with a screwdriver extension and a lot of patience.

Old domestic cars are equipped with a luggage lock, which can be opened using a loop made of thin wire.

By placing the loop over the latch, you can bend the latch to the side.

If you lose your trunk key, you can open the trunk of your car using a slotted screwdriver.

Let us say right away that this method is not suitable for foreign cars and for modern Russian cars, since these cars have an anti-burglary device.

But if the car is old, a slotted screwdriver is inserted into the lock, the screwdriver is rocked from side to side and the lock is opened.

If the trunk lock needs to be opened on a Volga car or on an old American car, a piece of the seal around the lock must be removed. Then, make a hook out of wire with a curved nose 45* up, try to push the hook through the slot near the lock and open the trunk.

Using the hook, you need to press the rod, which will open the lock.

This process is difficult and long.

Therefore, if you need to open the trunk urgently, knock out the cylinder of the lock mechanism using a special tool.

You will open the trunk, but break the lock; if possible, entrust this work to a specialist.

Trunk lock, how to open the trunk with a power lock

If your vehicle is equipped with a power lock, use the key to open it.

If there is no key, as some modern cars equipped with radio tags against unauthorized intrusion into the car - remove the back panel of the key fob.

There is a key sting inside the key fob; if you press the spring mechanism, it will release.

But, if the key blade is missing or the key fob body is one-piece, call the dealer from whom you purchased the car.

The trunk lock may not open from the remote control due to wear on the antenna.

If the trunk lock does not open due to the antenna, use the button or lever located in the passenger compartment to open the trunk.

Immediately after opening the trunk lock, replace non-working antenna elements in order to avoid problems in the future.

The trunk lock may not open due to oxidized contacts, due to a breakdown of the central electronic unit— only a diagnostic scanner can make such a diagnosis.

The trunk lock may not open due to foreign objects getting into the lock mechanism.

Therefore, carefully inspect the lock; if you find pieces of polyethylene or cardboard, simply remove this debris with a knife or screwdriver; perhaps the lock will open.

At sub-zero outside temperatures, after washing, the lock may simply freeze.

Such problems are solved using special liquid, to defrost the locks, or, if possible, warm up the car in a warm garage.

The car trunk lock may not open due to rust in the mechanism, in which case you need to knock out the lock cylinder and open the lock; if corrosion has affected the body of the mechanism, you will have to change the lock completely.

Trunk lock, which is better, open it yourself or call for help?

Modern cars cost a lot of money and any repairs hit the pocket of the car enthusiast.

Therefore, to avoid large expenses, it is better to contact a car service center or call a specialist for emergency lock opening.
