Adult passengers

The passenger compartment in Renault Duster remained stable in a frontal impact, but the rear (trunk) door opened during a crash test and the car was fined. Chest protection was rated as marginal for the front seats based on bogus chest compression readings. Measurements in the knees and hips of the dummies "do not indicate a problem, but on the driver's side, the structure of the dashboard poses a threat to the life and health of passengers of different sizes and with those who sat in different positions, and protection on that side was rated as marginal. side impact barrier, the driver's door was opened and the car was fined No doors were opened in the stronger side-impact pole, but the driver's chest protection was assessed as weak due to bogus chest compression readings. was rated as marginal.

Child passengers

The car scored the maximum score for the protection of the dummy 18 months in dynamic tests. The forward movement of the dummy from 3 years old in the special seat is well controlled in a frontal impact, and both dummies were properly protected in the test in the event of a side impact. The passenger airbag can be deactivated to prevent damage to the rearward facing child restraint. However, the information provided to the driver about the status of the airbag is not clear enough. The dangers of using a rear-facing front seat without first disengaging the airbag were clearly explained, but the label was not firmly attached to the sun visor.

Pedestrian protection

Neither the bumper nor the leading edge of the bonnet scored a single point, offering poor foot protection for pedestrians. The hood provided good protection in most areas, but would likely hit a child in the head in a collision.

Additional security systems

Electronic stability control is available as an option on the Renault Duster, so it was not evaluated in the crash test. A seat belt reminder is standard equipment for the driver's seat. A passenger seat belt reminder in the front seat is expected to become standard equipment for the Duster. The system meets all Euro NCAP requirements.

Very different cars are often sold under the same name in Western Europe and in emerging markets. And if the difference was only in appearance or equipment list! In the case of cars for Latin America and Asia, automakers often save on the installation of equipment that directly affects safety: this is a stabilization system, ABS, belt pretensioners, airbags and even penny body amplifiers. There are many examples: Latin American ones, in crash tests they performed significantly worse than their counterparts for the European market. Renault Duster for India can now be added to the same list.

Recall that the Dacia Duster crossover, assembled at a plant in Pitesti, Romania, was defeated by experts from the Euro NCAP committee back in 2011. The result was not outstanding: with a frontal impact, the load on the chest of the front riders turned out to be increased. But thanks to four airbags (front and side), the Romanian crossover has earned an honest three Euro NCAP stars.

But Renault Duster, produced at a plant in Chennai, India, lacks airbags as standard. And in tests conducted by Global NCAP, it has not received a single point or a single star for protecting front riders. Although the crash tests here are not as severe as those of the Europeans (only a frontal impact is carried out, no side impact). Global NCAP experts called the driver's head protection extremely weak. The load on the torso and hips of both dummies was also high.

At Renault's request, the car was retested in a richer configuration with one airbag. Naturally, the result was better: nine points out of seventeen possible or three stars for the protection of the driver and front passenger. But this car also performed far from exemplary: the dummy's head slipped off the dome of the pillow, the protection of the chest was insufficient.

Interestingly, the Duster for the Latin American market showed a more outstanding result: four stars. It turned out that the Brazilian car has a larger airbag, which provides better protection for the head and chest.

As for the Russian market, the Renault Duster crossovers assembled in Moscow are already "in the base" equipped with one driver's airbag. The front airbag for the passenger is offered for a surcharge starting from the “second” Expression configuration, and the side airbags - from the “third” Privilege version, and only the most expensive version of the Luxe Privilege at a price of under a million offers all four pillows at no additional cost.

The end of this year turned out to be very busy for the Euro NCAP organization: the results of the previous series of crash tests were published only two weeks ago - and now a new batch of victims has arrived. This time, fifteen car models took part in the tests at once, which can be divided into two groups - newcomers and old-timers of the market.

Automobile Comprehensive assessment Pedestrian safety Preventive security
BMW 6 Series GT 86% 85% 81% 59%
Dacia duster 71% 66% 56% 37%
Hyundai kona 87% 85% 62% 60%
Jaguar F-Pace 93% 85% 80% 72%
Kia stinger 93% 81% 78% 82%

Kia Stonic (with safety package) 93% 84% 71% 59%
MG ZS 71% 51% 59% 29%

Among the seven new products, four cars earned the maximum five stars: these are liftbacks (some of the results were taken from the donor sedan of the fifth series) and, a mid-size crossover and a compact SUV. The crossover, which in Europe occupies the same niche as the Rio X-Line in Russia, was also awarded the "Five", but there are two nuances. Firstly, the maximum rating is given only to versions with a safety package (it includes automatic braking and road marking systems), while without it there are only three stars. And secondly, Stonik's tests were not actually carried out! Since this SUV repeats the power structure of the body and equipment, Euro NCAP experts simply assigned Stonik the marks earned by the original hatchback.

For us, the results of crossover tests are much more interesting, because in one and a half to two years this model will appear in Russia under the Renault brand and will inevitably repeat the market success of its predecessor. Alas, in the current Euro NCAP rating, the new Duster received only three stars, although it surpassed the previous model in terms of safety. The loads on the front riders during an offset impact on a crushed barrier are reduced (but still exceed the absolutely safe threshold), a side impact on a pole no longer threatens the driver with fatal injuries. Although after a head-on collision with a wall at a speed of 50 km / h, which is more demanding on the restraining systems of the car, the front riders of the Duster risk their heads: overloads are high. And the seats still don't offer much protection against whiplash in a rear-end collision. Pedestrian safety has improved, but the main reason the Duster didn't score more than three stars is the lack of electronic assistants. However, more on that later.

Another three-star newcomer is the Chinese compact crossover, which has entered the UK market. His passive safety is not exemplary, and the most disastrous positions are the same as those of Duster: a frontal blow to an indestructible wall and a rear impact. And he also does not have electronic assistants.

This same circumstance has become a major stumbling block for most old-time models on the path to a high safety rating.

Toyota Aygo (with safety package) 82% 63% 64% 57%
Toyota Yaris 83% 80% 63% 57%

The Euro NCAP message is simple: cars that entered the market a few years ago are not as safe as new ones. Of the eight cars that have been sold in Europe for several years and have now been tested by Euro NCAP, only the recently updated hatchback was able to earn five stars. His passive safety is imperfect (loads on the legs and chest of riders exceed the injury threshold), but there are systems for automatic braking and tracking the lane markings.

The even more compact Toyota Aygo hatchback earned four stars. He has the cherished electronics in the list of options (without it, the final grade is even three-star), but he fell asleep on a frontal impact on the wall: the loads on the chest and head of the rear passenger turned out to be outrageous - serious injuries are guaranteed.

Now comes the fun part. Hatchbacks, and Opel Karl, as well as a compact van (its rating was automatically assigned to the short version without the Grand prefix) as a whole showed a level of protection for riders close to Aygo: rating for passive safety - from 61 to 76%. But modern electronic assistants for automatic braking and control of road markings are not allowed for them, even for a surcharge. Therefore - only three Euro NCAP stars.

Well, the most resonant was the hatchback crash test. The choice of this model seems strange: under the name this car debuted back in 2005, and already this December it was going to be discontinued, but at the insistence of the trade union, the release date was extended until July 2018 in order to at least load the Fiat plant in Melfi with something. Twelve years ago, the Grande Punto became the first B + model with a five-star Euro NCAP rating, but the organization has now announced that the Punto is now also the first car ever to receive a star! Paradox?

Of course, over the past twelve years, the Euro NCAP standards have become stricter, and Punto itself has not become better. If in 2005 a hatchback with six airbags earned 13.6 points out of 16 for a frontal overlap crash test, and a maximum of 18 points for two side impacts, now the base Punto with only two airbags has six points out of eight for a frontal crash -test and 6.7 points out of 16 for a side (impact on the pole was not carried out due to the lack of safety curtains). The loads on the riders are great, but even with such results, the Fiat Punto could scrape together two stars out of five. If it were not for the notorious electronic assistants: the Italian hatchback does not even have seat belt warning indicators, let alone an autobraking system. Therefore, the score for preventive safety is 0 points. And if at least in one of the disciplines a car gets a steering wheel, then, according to the current Euro NCAP rules, all the stars they have won are burned out.

Is this value system fair, with an emphasis on electronic assistants? Even in Europe itself, the Euro NCAP organization is increasingly reproached for the fact that the chosen path of toughening tests is not entirely correct. In this regard, the example of the American Insurance Institute for Highway Safety IIHS, which introduced in 2012: 25% of the front end instead of the usual 40%, is indicative. In this case, the blow most often falls past the spar, the main energy-absorbing element. Moreover, the Americans beat cars not only with the driver's side, but in some cases also with the passenger side of the front end. On such a test, many famous models burned out, and manufacturers began to take such a test into account when designing new machines. There may be more benefits from this than from electronic assistants. Which, of course, does not negate the introduction of the latter.

Next year, the Euro NCAP committee promises to introduce new, even stricter test rules. Which approach appeals to you more: European, with an emphasis on assisted electronics, or American, with tougher crash tests themselves?

Almost every model of any modern car manufacturer undergoes a mandatory check of the special European committee Euro NCAP. This service regularly organizes auto crash tests and helps car companies create safe vehicles.

Renault tests every single modification. Recently, photos and video materials of the Renault Duster crash test got to the network. The car was designed on a solid and simple platform and as a result showed good results.

EURO NCAP and Duster results

In general terms, we can say that the car, according to the built-in level of safety, is designed more for passengers than for pedestrians. Everyone who is inside the crossover during a collision receives a safety level equal to 3 stars. This means average. The maximum that can be obtained in this category is 5 points.

The situation with pedestrian safety is worse. According to the results of Renault Duster, the crash test showed 1 star. Thus, the company still has something to try on. First of all, developers and engineers will need to rework external components to increase the level of pedestrian safety.

Renault Duster crash test result - 3 stars out of 5 possible.

The euroncap renaulstory also provides drivers with a unique opportunity to explore the potential of the SUV's trim level and understand the functionality of the vehicle. The first thing to show potential buyers is the strengths and weaknesses of the car. This is the only way to win the public's trust.

General safety in the car

According to an independent study, adult passengers are 74% protected while in the Duster's cabin. Frontal collisions pose a danger to all passengers, including the driver of the vehicle. The results show that tremendous pressure is applied to the ribcage of each crossover inside the vehicle at the moment of impact. And this despite the fact that all the airbags were deployed on time. Such pressure, according to the standards of the European Bureau, is considered too strong and dangerous to human life.

The figures taken from the lower part of the cabin turned out to be surprising. The area of the legs of each passenger remained practically intact. Not a single dummy was seriously injured. Thus, the safety of the vehicle becomes high enough.

It should also be noted that with a strong impact on the body of the car, the luggage compartment door opened. The indicator, although insignificant, is, in the opinion of authoritative experts, very informative. It makes it possible to modify some parts of the body, improving their strength. This is especially true for door locks.

The overall rating of the car was 11 points. According to the NCAP criteria, this is equal to 3 out of 5 points. The indicator is average, but in comparison with many similar crossovers and budget cars of the same generation, the result is good.

Test series:

  1. The most unsuccessful test was the test for simulating a strong impact of the modification with a pillar. Here Duster scored only 6 points, which makes the company's management think about improving the base of the body and the possible use of revolutionary materials.
  2. The result of a side impact with a pillar. This item should be disassembled in detail. The test was carried out several times and each time the result was practically the same. When there was an impact from the passenger side, the force of the collision forced the driver's door to open. The fact is that this should not happen in high-quality cars. Therefore, improvements are inevitable. The result is 7.2 points.
  3. Rear kick. Contrary to the efforts of Renault's safety developers, the SUV model could not please its customers with unique performance. The collision of the car from behind showed that the passengers were seriously injured. The main ones were in the cervical spine. Score - 5.2 points.
  4. Children. According to information from the Euroncap report, the Duster was able to save children in the cabin by only 78%. The committee's requirements are much higher. Therefore, work will be required to improve this indicator.

Active safety systems

Almost any modern car has special active safety systems. This system provides for the notification of the driver about possible threats and difficult conditions. To ensure their functionality, it is necessary to correctly position all sensors and correctly lay the power cables.

The modification of the first Duster, as well as the restyled one, is unique in that of all possible active safety systems in the car there is only one - the control of the fastened seat belts. It is presented in the form of several sensors. As for a crossover of national importance, which has received worldwide recognition, the crash test result is not great. Received two points in this test. Although an off-road vehicle configuration is an affordable and inexpensive option for the company's customers, it can still include several modern technologies.

Special attention is paid to the result that is already familiar to Renault - the airbags for passengers, including the driver, worked precisely. This characteristic is integral to the brand's popularity. From the very beginning, the concern has installed only high-quality and reliable pillows on its cars. Each model of the French company demonstrates excellent protection for both the driver and passengers during critical collisions.

Additional security systems

Since car safety is internal and external, both options should be considered.

As already described above, engineers did not place revolutionary systems inside the car. The biggest achievement can be seen in the protection of children inside the cabin. During the tests, two dummies were placed in the back row. No occupants were injured in both frontal and side impacts. On the contrary, each dummy was held in its own chair during each test. Conclusion - the less the mass of passengers, the less damage.

Safety of others

The restyled model failed to improve the performance of its predecessor and remained unfriendly towards pedestrians. Their safety is only 28%. Such indicators were the lowest according to the results of Euroncap.

The bonnet and front bumper instantly inflict critical damage to the feet of pedestrians. The head area is also significantly affected. As doctors say, this instantly leads to fractures, sometimes open.

Accordingly, the modification during the next revisions should be improved in several directions at once. And the first of them is the level of safety of others.

What is the bottom line

After a detailed study of all the collisions carried out by the Euroncap committee, Renault's assessment was satisfactory. The experts considered this to be wrong, since the tests revealed serious flaws. But, as practice shows, this car can move on the roads.

All owners and potential buyers should, after the Renault Duster test, know what this car is capable of in terms of safety criteria.

Renault Duster crash test 2017

All cars coming off the assembly line to the wide market must undergo a series of tests. The key element of the tests is the crash test - testing the strength of the car in collisions. The purpose of this study is to determine the level of car safety for the driver and passengers. The rise in the number of accidents on the roads only stimulates interest in the test results among potential buyers.

The demanded "Frenchman"

Concern "Renault" has rapidly captured the market of budget crossovers, releasing a new model 5 years ago -. Low cost in combination with excellent technical characteristics and presentable appearance made the model a sales leader in several regions at once, providing the company with impressive profits.

Passing mandatory independent examinations is an integral part of the production of cars. It should be noted right away that the Renault Duster produced for Russia has not yet passed the crash test (there is definitely no data on this). But the European analogue - Dacia Duster - went through the procedure and it is possible to analyze the results obtained.

At the disposal of the general public are the results of tests carried out by specialists from EuroNCAP, an authoritative European organization that conducts independent crash tests with a detailed safety assessment. The results of the company's work are recognized by all specialists in the world.

EuroNCAP and Duster: how it went

All the information that is freely available rests on the Renault Duster crash test conducted in 2011. A detailed study carried out by the company's employees allows you to get a complete picture of the level of protection of passengers in case of possible collisions. When developing the concept of a crossover, the priority was the formation of a low market value of the car. Therefore, many buyers are skeptical about the quality of the car and its reliability and durability. Despite the fact that this test is already several years old, its analysis suggests otherwise.

General overview of the test

EuroNCAP experts chose the Duster 1.5 DCi "Laureate" LHD model, with a total weight of 1180 kg.

The complete set of this car includes the following elements of the security system:

  • Safety belts with pressure limiters.
  • Front airbags for driver and passenger.
  • Side airbags. They provide protection to the chest and head.

The tests investigated the security of not only passengers, but also pedestrians. For the latter, the car turned out to be quite dangerous.

  • Adult safety level:

Front-line collisions were used to check the safety of the driver and passengers. The analysis of the sensors installed on the dummies and the cropped video filming made it possible to determine the following results:

  1. When hitting from the front, there is significant pressure on the chest of the driver and front passenger.

  2. If the driver is larger than the dummy, there is a risk of serious injury.

The result of the research is 11 points and "average level".

Also, 2 additional tests were carried out:

  • Side impact. Due to the opening of the driver's door, the final mark was reduced to 7.2 points.
  • Collision with a pillar. This test revealed low chest protection and the final score was 6 points.
  • Rear impact collision. Such an incident can lead to serious injury to the cervical vertebrae. Therefore, the score is the lowest - 2.5.

  • Child safety level:

The approach to the level of safety of young passengers in Duster has earned positive feedback from specialists. In this category, the car scored the maximum points.

During the test, 2 dummies were placed on the back seat, which correspond to children 1.5 and 3 years old. As a result of frontal and side collisions, the dummy remained in place and practically did not budge. In the front seat, it is possible to place a child seat against the movement of the car, with the airbag deactivated.

  • Pedestrian safety level:

The design of the vehicle is not pedestrian-oriented. The massive bumper causes serious injuries to the legs and the bonnet damages the pedestrian's head. In this segment of the test, the car received only 10 points.

  • Active safety system level:

The active protection and warning system has only sensors for an unfastened seat belt. Therefore, the score received by Duster is so small - only 2.

The crash test conducted pillar side impact studies that are often ignored. For Duster, this research is important, since due to the short base, the car can lose stability and receive a similar side impact.

The final result of the crash test Renault Duster3 stars out of 5 possible. Not a bad level for a crossover in this market segment.
