Weaknesses and disadvantages Ford Focus 2

Body:

Paintwork- due to the age of this model, the ideal condition of the body paintwork is most likely the result of a recent body repair, and not careful operation. When examining a car, you need to understand that dull paint color, chips, scratches and sills sandblasted in the lower part are often signs of natural aging. Many copies on the secondary market already have refurbished paintwork of problematic parts. Given the age and the price tag for the second generation of the Focus, in most cases, restoration work is not done in the best services, so when choosing a car, you need to be very responsible for inspecting the body so as not to get expensive repairs. If we talk about weaknesses, then it is worth noting the front bumper, hood and trunk lid, since it is in these places that problems with paintwork appear most quickly.

Chromium- decorative chrome-plated elements become covered with bubbles after several winters.

Metal- the body of the Focus 2 is completely galvanized, thanks to which it resists the onslaught of redhead disease well. However, given the age of the car, there may be certain problems. When inspecting a car, first of all, you need to inspect the places of contact of the bumper with body elements, the trunk lid, sills, door edges and the front of the hood. Particularly noteworthy is the decorative plastic trim with the branded emblem on the trunk lid, as rust appears underneath first.

Locks- one of the most vulnerable spots is the bonnet lock, as it has a very unfortunate location and is exposed to moisture, dirt and reagents, which is why it quickly turns sour and stops working. It is possible to extend the life of the lock, but for this it is necessary to periodically flush it with special means (WD-40, etc.) or replace the lock from plastic to metal, the best option is considered to be a third generation Ford Mondeo lock. With the arrival of cold weather, the touch button for opening the trunk lock may start to malfunction - it freezes due to moisture entering it. The central locking is not famous for its reliability either; its incorrect operation leads to the fact that, in addition to blocking all doors, the gas tank flap is also blocked.

Wiper fluid hose- often flies off its mount and fills in candle wells and cylinders.

Optics- on pre-styling versions of the car, the headlights are prone to fogging. The problem is eliminated by applying a sealant. On sedans, the optics installed on the trunk lid may suddenly stop working. The reason - the wiring harness responsible for power supply breaks. It would seem that a simple replacement of bulbs in the headlights, for an inexperienced motorist, in fact, may require a lot of time and nerves, since for this procedure you will have to remove and disassemble the headlights.

Electronics- when inspecting the car, it is imperative to check the serviceability of the backlighting (contacts are oxidized), the trunk lock (the wiring harness breaks), heating of the outside mirrors (threads burn out).

Weak points of power units

1.4 and 1.6 liters.Duratec 16VSigma (Zetec-SE):

The weakest engine in the Ford Focus 2 line is not often found, since it was installed only in basic versions of a car. If we talk about its reliability, then the mechanics praise this motor for the fact that it practically does not have congenital sores. If you decide to purchase a Focus with just such an engine, you need to be careful when choosing a car, since a significant part of such cars have worked in taxi companies and have practically exhausted their service life. Motors 1.4 and 1.6 duratec ti-vct 115 hp do not have hydraulic lifters, therefore, it is necessary to adjust the valves every 100-150 thousand km. As for the weak points of these units, here we can highlight the unreliability of the thermostat and the right engine mount, when worn out, vibrations increase.

Another childhood disease of engines is triplet, there can be several reasons for this ailment: one of the spark plugs, high-voltage wires, an idle speed regulator (if there is a troit at idle), an ignition coil or a gasoline pump are faulty. Also, the cause of erratic engine operation is often a strong contamination of the throttle valve. On a 115-strong engine, phase shifter couplings (there are two of them) do not differ in reliability. The timing belt has a belt with a declared replacement interval of every 150,000 km. However, experienced Focus owners recommend replacing the belt and rollers every 80-100 thousand kilometers. The declared resource of the engines is 250,000 km, in practice they are nursed up to 350,000 km.

1.8 l.Duratec-HE /MZRL8:

It is a development of Japanese engineers of the Mazda concern. The main problem of this engine is unstable idling (rpm float). In most cases, the ailment can be eliminated by installing firmware from a two-liter engine. Often, owners also complain about the difficulty in starting the unit. Cleaning the throttle valve helps to solve the problem. A reliable metal chain is used in the timing drive of this motor. And although the chain is designed for the entire service life of the unit, there are copies on which, after 150,000 km of run, it began to stretch a little, and by 170-200 thousand km it needed to be replaced. It is quite simple to check the circuit, you need to "gas" a little on a cold engine and listen if there is a "gurgling" sound or crackling when the gas is released. The presence of extraneous sounds is a sure signal about the upcoming costs of replacing the chain.

The valve cover and cylinder head gaskets are not famous for their reliability, as a rule, 100-150 thousand km, they dry out and begin to leak oil. This engine did not pass by such problems as tripping, vibrations, the appearance of various knocks and noises, the fragility of ignition coils, high-voltage wires and a gas pump. As with weaker units, it is quite often (every 40-60 thousand km) that the throttle valve and the exhaust gas recirculation valve need to be cleaned. On a car with a mileage of over 100,000 km, oil consumption begins to increase, the norm is consumption up to 200 grams per 1000 km, if the norm is exceeded, you need to visit the service as soon as possible so as not to get expensive repairs. The reason, as a rule, is one - the occurrence of the piston rings. This trouble most often befell the owners who save on oil or overheat the engine. The declared resource of the engine is 350,000 km, but as practice has shown, with proper maintenance, it can last up to 500,000 km.

Duratec HE 2.0 / MZR LF:

Structurally, this is the same 1.8, but with larger diameter cylinders. If we compare this engine with a weaker unit, then it looks preferable: it is more elastic, more powerful, it works quieter, but at the same time it has the same fuel consumption and has no problem with unstable idle. A reliable metal chain is used in the timing drive (resource - 200-250 thousand km). The disadvantages of this motor include the unreliability of the camshaft oil seals and the thermostat (it walks less than 100,000 km). During operation, it is necessary to periodically check the condition of the spark plug wells, and if oil appears in them, it is necessary to urgently tighten the valve cover mounting bolts or replace its gasket.

At 120-150 km of run, valve clearances must be adjusted, since hydraulic lifters were not installed on this motor. At the same mileage, replacement of the upper hydraulic engine mount is required. Closer than 200,000 km, the intake manifold flap control valve becomes unusable. Symptoms - traction disappears after 3000 rpm, and the Check Engine indicator lights up on the instrument panel. If the generator fails (it serves about 150,000 km), it is better to refuse further movement on the battery, since after that it will most likely have to reanimate the engine control unit. The resource of the motor to the capital is on average 400-450 thousand km.

Diesel:

Diesel engines Ford Focus 2 in comparison with gasoline units have more significant problems. Most of them are caused not so much by the reliability of the units themselves as by the quality of our diesel fuel and poor service. In order for the motor not to present unpleasant surprises for as long as possible, it must be regularly and most importantly serviced with high quality - it is recommended to carry out maintenance after 5,000-10,000 km. When using low-quality fuel, you need to be ready for an expensive repair or replacement of high-pressure fuel pumps, fuel injectors, particulate filter, EGR valve. On a run of 150-200 thousand km, a two-mass flywheel is asked for replacement. If jerks appear when starting off or a characteristic rattling, it is not worth delaying the repair, since the elimination of the consequences of destruction is very expensive.

Quite common is the problem of depressurization of the intake duct in the area between the intercooler and the turbocharger. On cars with high mileage, it will be useful to check the camshaft position sensor. A 1.6 engine after 100,000 km has a high probability of turbine lubrication problems. If the ailment is not noticed in a timely manner, you can get to replace the expensive turbocharger. In a 2.0 TDCi engine, a common problem is oil leakage through the camshaft seal. Despite the considerable list of problem areas, it is worth recognizing that Ford diesels are less problematic than similar units of competitors.

Transmission reliability

For Ford Focus 2, two types of gearboxes were available - a 5-speed manual (MTX-75 and IB5) and a 4-speed automatic (4F27E). The most powerful diesel version (2.0 l. 136 hp) was equipped with a 6-speed manual and automatic transmission, but such cars were not officially supplied to us.

Mechanics:

MTX-75 was installed with the most powerful engines of the range (1.8 and 2.0 liters) and is the most reliable transmission of this model. Of the shortcomings of the box, only the current oil seals and seals of the gearshift rod can be noted. If the problem is not eliminated for a long time, this will lead to a decrease in the oil level in the transmission and accelerated wear of the shafts and gear rims. The clutch covers an average of 120,000 km. But the release bearing may be asked for replacement after 50,000 km.

IB5 - is the most problematic transmission. Problems with it appear early enough on a run of 40-50 thousand km - it knocks out the 2nd and 5th gears due to weak synchronizers. Later, at 80-100 thousand km, the satellites axle in the differential broke off, followed by a crankcase breakdown. By 120,000 km, the input shaft bearing can howl, if it is not replaced by 150,000 mileage, it wedges. If you still decide to buy a car with such a transmission, get ready to change it to MTX75 in the future.

Automatic transmission :

4F27E - the automatic transmission is also quite reliable. Oil is filled in it for the entire service life, but some services recommend changing it at least once every 100,000 km. If you do not arrange a race at traffic lights, then the automatic transmission will delight you with trouble-free operation for a very long time. Vulnerable places of the machine are the valve body, pressure sensors and pressure regulator solenoids, often they need to be replaced by 150-170 thousand km of run.

Reliability of the suspension, brakes and steering on the Ford Focus 2

The Ford Focus 2 suspension has an unusual design for golf-class cars: MacPherson struts are traditionally used in the front, and a multi-link in the back (related models have a beam). Thanks to this arrangement, the chassis is sufficiently balanced for both swallowing bumps and active steering. As for the reliability of the suspension, it is quite strong, and its main elements have a good resource (about 100,000 km). Only the support bearings of the struts, the resource of which often does not exceed 70,000 km, can spoil the impression of the car's chassis.

The resource of the original elements of the front suspension:
  • Support bearings - 40-80 thousand km.
  • Stabilizer struts - up to 50 thousand km
  • Stabilizer bushings - 60-80 thousand km
  • Hub bearings - up to 70-90 thousand km (change assembled with the hub)
  • Ball joints - 90-120 thousand km. The original is delivered only complete with a lever and silent blocks. To save money, many install an analogue - it changes separately from the lever
  • Shock absorbers - 120-150 thousand km
  • SHRUS - more than 150 thousand km
Resource of original rear suspension elements:

The service life of Ford Focus 2 rear suspension elements will largely depend on driving style and operating conditions. If the car spends most of the time on the asphalt, the levers and silent blocks of the rear suspension will last long enough - 150,000 km. With frequent trips on country roads, their resource will be almost half as much - up to 100,000 km. If the suspension begins to emit extraneous sounds, it is better to completely sort it out, if you do not want to visit the service station every week.

  • The stabilizer struts serve about 70 thousand km
  • Shock absorbers - 110-130 thousand km
  • Hub bearings are practically eternal (resource over 200 thousand km). On pre-styling cars (produced before 2008), there were cases when the rear hub broke out on the go along with the wheel.
Steering:

The steering system Ford Focus 2 uses a mechanical rack equipped with an electro-hydraulic or hydraulic booster, depending on the modification. As experience has shown, the rail is quite reliable and should not cause problems up to 200,000 km. But the amplifier can start to spoil the nerves early enough (after 60,000 km). At power steering, with the arrival of severe frosts, the bypass valves may freeze due to the appearance of condensation. To protect yourself from possible troubles, it is recommended to change the working fluid every 40-50 thousand km (selected according to the Vin code). The problem of liquid leaks from high pressure pipes is quite common. The weak point of the electric amplifier is the pump control board, the replacement of which costs $ 700-900. After 60,000 km, the high pressure hose may begin to leak at the junction of the connection with the rail. Closer to 150,000 km, the amplifier bearings are asked for replacement. The disease is manifested by howling when turning the steering wheel. After 200,000 km, the pump may stop working altogether for one of two reasons - wear of the electric motor winding or a burned out transistor.

Consumables resource:

  • Steering tips - 50-80 thousand km
  • Steering rods - up to 100 thousand km
Problem areas of the interior and electrics Ford Focus 2

Salon Ford Focus 2, although made of inexpensive materials, leaves a very pleasant impression. Of the drawbacks of the interior, it can be noted that the appearance of squeaks on a Russian-assembled car in the cold season (on European versions of a car, this problem is less common). Most of all, the front panel, instrument panel, seat adjustment mechanisms and trunk upholstery are annoying. Also worth noting is the weak insulation of the wheel arches. The owners, whose height exceeds 190 cm, blame the lack of legroom. There is also a lack of space for a passenger sitting behind a tall driver.

As for the electrics, there are no serious problems here, unless, of course, the hands of a handicraftsman have been applied to it. Problematic places can only be attributed to malfunctions in the dashboard (error messages appear chaotically and then go out). Most often, the malfunction is caused by oxidation of the contacts or a burnt out processor. Also a common problem is the failure of the temperature sensor in the cabin and the resistor responsible for limiting the speed of the stove motor.

What's the bottom line?

As befits a real people's car, it has an optimal price-performance ratio and is one of the most attractive models in the aftermarket. With careful operation and proper maintenance, this car will serve faithfully for many years and give only positive emotions. Despite the high level of reliability, the choice of a used Ford Focus 2 must be taken very responsibly, since cars of this model often work in taxi services and corporate fleets, in which they are mercilessly operated without proper maintenance, which means there is a chance to run into a killed copy. When choosing a car, it is better to give preference to restyled versions released after 2008, since most of their "sores" have been eliminated.

If you have experience in operating Ford Focus 2, please tell us what problems and difficulties you had to face. Perhaps it is your feedback that will help the readers of our site when choosing a car.

Ford focus- this is not only a well-known brand, but also a high-quality technique that has shown itself on the positive side over the years of use. The first generation of these cars has been sold in the secondary market for more than one year and is still relevant, despite the considerable wear and tear.

Now second generation cars are entering the secondary market, and in this article we will try to assess how reliable these cars are, and whether they will not be worse than their predecessors after a certain period of operation.

Body. Well, galvanizing, as before, saves it from decay, but the paint failed, it quickly becomes cloudy from the effects of water, prone to scratches, peels off. The front bumper and the edge of the bonnet also lose color quickly, it would be nice to apply a protective film or anti-gravel coating on them. Already in the second year of use backlight contacts are oxidized for auto license plate.

Opening the hood with a key is still not a very pleasant pleasure, and it brings a lot of problems. You can start with the fact that after such a case, the hands often remain in the mud, and the plastic rod, which goes from the lock cylinder to the latch, also breaks quite often. Replacing the lock will cost 70 euros. Fortunately, there are craftsmen who put the same piece, but this time a metal one. Sedans often the trunk stops opening, it is corny that a part of the electrical wiring breaks, which is unsuccessfully located.

The headlights of the second generation also suffer, the bulbs burn out in them, and for the sake of repairing the latter, you have to disassemble the entire headlight. The same thing happens with heated mirror filaments. The heater often requires special attention, the seat heating often stops working. The heating fan motor is a separate topic altogether, having a cost of 240 euros, it can safely end up after 50 thousand km, its resistor burns out, but if when changing gears, hear a squeal then do not bother to lubricate the shaft bearings - useless, need to be replaced.

Another reason for cold snaps in the cabin can be the engine. Gasoline engines for 1.8 and 2.0 liters received a thermostat, which stops working without "walking up" and 100 thousand km. The generator brings a little joy; it rarely fails before 150 thousand km. If he refused, then there is no need to rush to a replacement, often a simple replacement of brushes saves the day. Please note that if the generator still fails, it is better not to go further on the battery, because the engine control unit will fall asleep so soundly that you will have to wake up only with proprietary equipment.

There is also a lot of trouble with the firmware of the electronic control unit. Most of all, Duratec 1.8 is buggy, in which, with different versions of the software, the engine pulls weakly until it warms up, idle speed jumps, starts poorly, and jerks when driving in tightness.

In general, in 1.8 and 2.0 liter Duratec engines, as in the first generation of Focuses, problems are created by the throttle valve block, ignition wires and coils. Every 50,000 km. necessary clean the throttle body, because it quickly becomes dirty, if flushing does not help, then you just need to change the damper position sensor, which costs 70 euros.

It is also imperative to check the spark plug wells for oil deposits, they usually appear after 90,000 km. This means that the time has come to change the gasket on the valve cover, which costs 30 euros. You can also try tighten the valve cover, as due to vibrations its tightening has weakened. By this mileage, vibrations can increase because the upper hydraulic support of the motor is weakened. Its replacement will cost 90 euros.

On motors with a volume of 2 liters after 100,000 km. a dual-mass flywheel may fail, it will emit specific rattles, its replacement will cost 520 euros. If it is not changed in time, the consequences will be dire. There are also cases when after 3000 rpm the thrust disappears and the Check Engine light comes on, which means that the time has come to change the valve that controls the intake manifold flaps for 85 euros.

In these motors, the only thing that does not require attention is the timing chain and drive, they can easily withstand 250,000 km. But on older engines with a volume of 1.4 and 1.6 liters, it is necessary to change the timing belt every 80,000 km. These motors run on the first generation of the Focus and are quite reliable.

There is one more motor, which began to be installed on the 2nd generation of the Focus - 1.6 liter with a capacity of 115 liters. with. Ti-VCT, in which the variable valve timing mechanism works at the inlet and outlet. In this motor, this mechanism causes problems - the camshaft couplings are not characterized by special reliability. After restyling in 2007, this unit was finalized, and the problems disappeared by themselves.

In general, all Ford Focuses with gasoline engines have common weaknesses: a gas pump that requires high-quality fuel. The car may not start if the fuel pump mesh becomes clogged. The difficulty here lies in the fact that this mesh is not so easy to change, it comes complete with a gas pump, which costs 300 euros, and you will have to pay another 150 euros for the work, because you need take off the gas tank in order to change the fuel pump. But this is all the official course of events, now there are masters who, for a modest payment, will be able to pick up a mesh and change it separately, leaving a serviceable gas pump in the car.

But these are all small things compared to another situation - converters costing 800 euros, they are not famous for a long service life and are located very close to the exhaust manifold. These converters are ruined by excess fuel that did not burn out during a misfire and oil that entered the intake due to coked or worn piston rings. This problem is relevant when the engine consumes 1.5 liters of oil per 10,000 km. mileage. Rings can become stuck due to late oil change. On cars whose mileage has exceeded 100 thousand km, the oil must be changed after 10,000 km, and not, as stated in the instructions, after 15,000 km. Also, rings wear out faster if there is no proper cooling, so you should not be lazy. clean the radiators every year... In a particularly hot season, you may not even notice that the engine is overheated, because the coolant temperature gauge is not very accurate.

There are also diesel modifications of the Focus, but it is very difficult to get them here, because only 4% of them were produced. They require high-quality diesel fuel, if you refuel with an unsuccessfully cheap diesel engine, then very expensive repairs to restore the injection pump will have to be done, the work alone will cost 500 euros, and the pump itself will cost 1000 euros. Also injectors will need to be changed, and they cost 315 euros. So that after 100 thousand km. did not have to change the EGR valve for 400 euros, it should be cleaned of deposits. And of course, the 2-mass flywheel creates the same problems here as in 2-liter gasoline engines.

Transmission

A simple and, accordingly, reliable automatic 4F27E automatic transmission is installed on the Focuses, it is not famous for its special nimbleness, it is also installed on Ford Escorts, Mazda of the 3rd and 6th series, it no longer has the same problems that were on the old Focus. The only unpleasant thing that can happen, and even then, is the fault of the valve body, pressure sensors and pressure regulator solenoids. If install a new valve body, then this is minus 1300 euros, but it can be restored for 600 euros. Solenoids will cost 100 euros, pressure sensors 110 euros.

The mechanical box, on the other hand, is less reliable in the 2nd generation Focuses. The 5-speed mechanics IB5, which is equipped with a 1.8-liter Dutatec engine, can fail after 80,000 km if given a good load. Here in the differential the pinion axle may break, after which a hole in the crankcase- the oil will start to leak, which means that the box will require an expensive repair in the amount of 2,500 euros. There are cases that after 100,000 km. there is a howl from the bearing in the input shaft, if it is not changed, then it can jam, and then the box will also require expensive repairs.

If such breakdowns occur, then it is not necessary to repair the box or buy the same new one, it makes sense to install another 5-speed box, namely MTX75, which goes to 2-liter engines. It is already more robust and fits a 1.8 liter engine without any problems. Regardless of which box is installed, should watch the oil seals and the sealing of the gearshift rod... Quite often, the rod can etch oil, this should not be the case, otherwise the slightest lack of oil will lead to the fact that the gear rims of the gears and shafts will become unusable.

There were cases that after 60,000 km. the release bearing failed, the replacement of which cost 65 euros along with the clutch cylinder. The entire clutch costs 290 euros, so when a bearing is replaced it is worth looking at the condition of all the other clutch elements. Even if you drive carefully, the clutch can work no more than 130 thousand km. If transmissions will start flying, then this is not a reason to change the cable mechanism, it is enough just to tighten the cables.

Suspension

There were no new surprises in the suspension of the 2nd generation Focus, the suspension remained the same as in the first generation - quite tenacious. Front - McPherson, in which wheel bearings do not last long - up to 60,000 km, and they need to be replaced complete with a hub for 130 euros. Also to this run replacements require stabilizer struts, each of which will cost 26 euros. Further, after 80,000 km. the support bearings of the struts usually get tired, each of which costs 12 euros. And after 100,000 km. it will be necessary to change the levers, which are assembled with a ball joint and silent blocks for 150 euros.

As for the rear suspension, there is a multi-link, it is more durable, it can easily withstand 120,000 km. After this run, you need to sort it out - it will cost 520 euros. Silent blocks are assembled with levers, but there are craftsmen who can put non-original silent blocks, thus, it will be possible to save a little, but this is a more risky event. In general, most of the rear suspension parts are the same as on the Mazda 3-series.

Steering

After 60 thousand km. in the steering, you will have to change the rods, which cost 65 euros, the rack and pinion mechanisms begin to knock slightly for this run, they were often changed under warranty.

In Focus, there is an electrohydraulic power steering, which can burn out the board that controls the pump. If this happens, you will have to change the entire block for 700 euros. In cars with engines of 1.4 and 1.6 liters, there is a conventional hydraulic booster, which can refuse in severe winter frosts. But this is not a reason to buy a new pump, which is sensitive to severe frost. Condensation builds up in the oil, which means that the check valves could freeze. It is enough to wait a little while the car warms up. To avoid such a situation in the future, it is necessary every 50,000 km. change the special oil at the power steering. By the way, the oil can be either mineral or synthetic, the main thing is that it corresponds to the VIN code.

As a result, we see that the new generation of Focus has not become more reliable than the previous generation, but the car has not become worse either. The main advantages of the Focuses are the relatively low price at the time of purchase, and the content is not too expensive. If you buy a Ford Focus 2, then it is better to choose models of later years, because the early models are the same as the Focus 1 of the last years of production, only the first generation costs about 60,000 rubles cheaper than the second.

If we compare the Focuses with other cars from this class, then the 2nd Focuses look more attractive than competitors such as Renault Megan 2 and Peugeot 307, which are 30,000 rubles cheaper. As for Japanese cars, they are much more expensive than the Focus - the Mazda 3 Series costs 40 thousand rubles more, and the Toyota Corolla is even more expensive - about 60,000 rubles.

Why did you love the second Ford Focus? For good consumer and driving characteristics, as well as the availability, which was provided by the Russian assembly. We also note the spacious interior, solid finish and a wide range of modifications. In addition, the Focus II has a reputation for being reliable and durable - without which it would have been impossible to count on a high rating. However, here, too, there were some nuances. And they got out on used copies.

Our Focus was officially offered with petrol "fours" with a volume of 1.4 liters (80 HP), 1.6 liters (100 and 115 HP), 1.8 liters (125 HP) and 2 l (145 HP). Dealers also sold versions with a 1.8-liter turbodiesel with 115 horsepower, but there are very few of these modifications on the market. The Focus is also rarely found with a base 1.4-liter engine. Such cars were purchased, as a rule, by corporate clients or in taxis. Nevertheless, mechanics praise this motor - it has practically no congenital diseases. True, unit 1.4 is often at the limit of its resource - due to its modest volume and power, it is usually "turned" to its fullest and it works "for wear and tear."

And the most reliable is the 100-horsepower engine produced in South Africa. The simple and modern design of this motor determines its excellent maintainability and low cost of ownership. The main thing is not to forget to change the timing belt every 80,000 km (1,500 rubles). But this engine is considered by many to be weak for a modern car. Especially paired with an "automatic". But its 115-strong counterpart, equipped with a variable valve timing system on the intake and exhaust shafts, has enough traction in all modes. True, phase shifter couplings do not differ in durability.

Optimal in terms of their capabilities are "fours" with a volume of 1.8 and 2 liters. But they are not deprived of ailments either. For example, engines have been found to consume more engine oil. If you notice blue smoke from the exhaust pipe, it is better to refuse the car. The fact is that it is Ford policy not to repair or replace piston rings and the pistons, liners or crankshaft themselves. The cylinder block with all the "giblets" is ejected.

But unlike weaker motors, the timing chain has a durable chain, which will only need to be replaced after 200,000 km. Pay attention to the valve cover gasket (1000 rubles), which, after 100,000 km, already begins to etch oil. If tightening the bolts does not help, only a replacement remains. By this time, as a rule, the upper hydraulic support of the engine also wears out (3500 rubles).

The unreasonable blues of the engines - poor traction and cold start, ragged idle speed and increased fuel consumption - were associated with the flawed software of the control unit. From the first "Focus" the successor got not very durable ignition coils and high-voltage wires, generators and gas pumps. In our conditions, the throttle valve block and the exhaust gas recirculation valve get dirty pretty quickly. Neutralizers do not differ in mileage (from 29,000 rubles), the life expectancy of which depends on the engine oil consumption. If the appetite of the motor increases to 200 grams per 1000 km, you need to contact the service.

You can safely buy a version with a 1.8-liter turbodiesel. The unit is generally reliable. But he loves high-quality fuel and regular service - it is recommended to carry out maintenance every 10,000 km. If you feed the engine with a diesel substitute, the high-pressure fuel pump (TNVD) will not last more than 100,000 km. Repair or replacement - from 20,000 to 50,000 rubles. And under normal conditions, it can withstand 2-3 times longer. After 100 thousand, you will have to spend money on new injection nozzles (from 12,500 rubles), flush the EGR valve ...

The progressively designed 1.6-liter engine (115 hp) is more powerful and more flexible than its 100-horsepower counterpart. But in terms of reliability, it cannot compete with it - on machines older than 2007, hydraulic couplings of the variable valve timing system are short-lived

On the Focus II with 1.4 liter, 1.6 liter and 1.8 liter gasoline engines, a manual transmission of the IB5 series was installed as standard, which did not differ in a large margin of safety. When working with a high load, for example, the pinion axle in the differential may break, which often led to a hole in the crankcase and repairs for 100,000 rubles. If, during a test drive, "howls" are heard in the box, one hundred to one, that this is the fault of the input shaft bearing. You cannot delay its replacement - the consequences can be costly.

But the other MTX75 box, which is aggregated with a 2-liter engine, is characterized by a cond design and durability. True, over time, oil seals and seals of the gear shift rod leak. But these are trifles. The main thing is to monitor the level of the transmission. Otherwise, oil starvation will lead to rapid wear of the shaft and gear rims of the gears. And further. This gasoline 2-liter engine (as well as a 1.8-liter turbodiesel) is equipped with a dual-mass flywheel that wears out by 100,000 km. If you feel jerks when starting off and a characteristic rattling, do not pull with its replacement. The detail is expensive - from 25,000 rubles, but the consequences of the destruction caused by a failed flywheel will be much more serious.

As a result of the 2008 modernization, the Focus has updated front fenders, hood, bumpers, headlights and exterior mirrors, and body side moldings have been removed. The radiator grill appears as an inverted trapezoid. For all versions, except for the sedan, they began to offer rear LED lights as an option.

The clutch can easily last 100,000 km or more, if not for the weak release bearing, made in a single block with the clutch slave cylinder. After 50,000 km, it usually loses its performance.

But the "automatic" is quite reliable. It has been installed on various Ford models since the early 90s and today it is almost completely devoid of congenital diseases. Unless on well-worn specimens, the valve body (about 25,000 rubles) and the pressure regulator solenoids fail. To extend the life of the box, servicemen recommend changing the oil every 60 thousand km.

Fully independent suspension (front MacPherson struts, rear - complex multi-link with thruster effect) Focus II is quite strong. But there are also weaknesses here. These are support bearings of the struts, which "nurture" an average of 40-70 thousand km. Hub bearings, which are replaced assembled with hubs, can withstand the same amount. When replacing, be careful - ABS sensors built into the hub often damage when dismantled. With light knocks in the suspension after 30-50 thousand km, the stabilizer struts will make themselves felt. But the bushings can withstand almost twice as much. Simultaneously with them, at 80-100 thousand km, the turn will come to update the ball joints assembled with a lever and silent blocks. And then on the way and shock absorbers.

In steering, the tips with rods are usually enough for 50-80 thousand km. And the rail itself on the first machines even changed under warranty. But by 2008 it became more durable. Moreover, the versions with 1.4 and 1.6 liter engines were equipped with a traditional hydraulic booster, and more powerful modifications came with an electro-hydraulic power steering, in which the pump control board could burn out. It is not repaired by dealers and changes in collection for 28,000 rubles.

As for the body, its metal is reliably protected from corrosion. But the paintwork disappointed. Burnt paint, faded bumpers and bonnet, partially sandblasted side skirts and darkened decor details are signs of natural aging rather than barbaric exploitation. Corrosion appears most quickly at the point of contact of the chrome lining with the body. The contacts of the license plate illumination in hatchbacks and sedans are short-lived. And in winter, moisture can freeze the sensor button for the luggage compartment lock. The hood lock opened with a key remains a proverb in the tongues - a trademark of the model since the first generation. To make it open on demand, it is better to apply grease to the inner surface of the corporate emblem that covers the lock cylinder. And in order to solve this issue radically, change the standard plastic lock (3500 rubles) to a metal one from Mondeo. Please note that the failure of the central lock blocks not only the doors, but also the gas tank flap. On sedan models, the wiring harness that supplies power to the lights on the trunk lid often breaks.

Should I buy or not? On the one hand, the Ford Focus does not shine with high reliability, and on the other hand, it has no obvious failures. In addition, the owners of seemingly not the most prosperous 1.8- and 2-liter versions may never encounter the above problems - according to statistics, they are found in about a third of all Focus on the market. So, there are not so many chances of running into a problem car. And to minimize the risk, heed the advice from "Auto Mail.Ru".

A used Ford Focus II nowadays is quite difficult to choose - there is too much supply on the market.

The most popular in the class of the Russian automotive market at the end of the 2000s was the Ford Focus II model. She had a localized assembly in Russia. Thanks to the low price tag, the Ford Focus II could compete with the likes of Mazda3, Peugeot 308, Hyundai Elantra and others. Today, there is a high demand for used copies of the Ford Focus 2. In this article we will tell you what you should pay attention to when choosing a used Ford Focus II car.

History of the second generation Ford Focus

The world debut of the Ford Focus II model took place in 2004. From the second generation, the model called it ceased to be global. The European version of this model differed from the American body design. However, already in the third generation of Ford Focus, the American automobile concern returned to unification. The Ford Focus II was better than its predecessor in every way. Its body was longer and wider. She offered more powerful engines and richer equipment. Official sales of the Ford Focus II model in Russia started in 2005. In 2008, the Russian market received a restyled version of the Ford Focus II. Restyling of the Ford Focus II model brought new front optics and a new radiator grill. The interior of the Ford Focus II car has received a lot more soft plastic.

Ford Focus II offer on the Russian market

Thanks to the Russian assembly and the unprecedented popularity of the Ford Focus II model during the years of production, today there is a fairly huge offer of used copies of this model in the secondary car market. Potential buyers should not rush to purchase Ford Focus II vehicles. You can choose suitable copies from the huge number of proposals on the market. As you know, the Ford Focus II model was produced in three body types: hatchback, sedan and station wagon. In the Russian secondary car market, the most represented is the Ford Focus II sedan. In total, there are 46% of Ford Focus II sedans from the total number of cars of this model. Next comes the five-door hatchback, followed by the station wagon and least of all three-door hatchbacks in our market, the Ford Focus II.

After restyling, the interior of the Ford Focus II has more soft plastic.

In the used car market, the most popular versions of the Ford Focus II are the 115 horsepower 1.6-liter petrol engine and the 125 horsepower 1.8-liter engine. These versions were equipped with a manual transmission only. It is worth noting that the demand for such versions is great due to the solid dynamics that manual transmissions provide. The version with an automatic transmission, although it is equipped with a two-liter petrol engine with a capacity of 145 horsepower, does not show solid dynamics at all in comparison with other competitors on the market. There were also versions with a 2.0-liter 145 horsepower engine and a manual transmission. However, they are quite rare on the Russian market. In addition, it is rare to find instances with a low-powered 1.4-liter gasoline engine with 85 horsepower, as well as diesel versions with a 1.8-liter turbodiesel with 115 horsepower.

It is worth noting that sellers like to twist the mileage on used copies of the Ford Focus II model. This model was very popular among taxi drivers and middle managers. The owner of a Ford Focus II had to travel at least 20,000 kilometers per year. Accordingly, 7- and 8-year-old copies of the Ford Focus 2 must have a mileage of 150-170 thousand kilometers. But in fact, they are offered with a range of 100,000 kilometers. That is why when choosing a Ford Focus II model, you need to look not at the odometer, but at the general technical condition.

When choosing a Ford Focus II, first of all, pay attention to the technical condition, the owners usually twist the runs.

Typical problems and breakdowns when operating Ford Focus II

In the table below, we present the typical problems and breakdowns of the Ford Focus II model during operation.

Car part Breakdowns and problems
Body Despite the Russian assembly of the Ford Focus II model according to the full production cycle, the quality of the paintwork and anti-corrosion treatment of the body is quite good. Rust can only appear at the joints of the fenders and the rear bumper. If corrosion shows up elsewhere, it is likely that the vehicle was in an accident.
Engine 1.4- and 1.6-liter gasoline engines have a timing belt drive. The 1.8 and 2.0 liter engines use a timing chain. At the same time, the timing belt has a resource of about 150,000 kilometers. If the belt breaks, the engine valves will bend. It is believed that the timing chain does not need to be replaced at all on Ford engines. However, after 150,000 kilometers, the chain will stretch solidly. From the factory, platinum spark plugs are installed in the Ford engine, the resource of which is 120,000 kilometers. Accordingly, if the engine is installed on non-original spark plugs, then the car's mileage is likely to exceed 120,000 kilometers. The engine oil in such motors must be changed every 20 thousand kilometers. It is better to change the brake fluid every 2 years. The coolant generally changes once every 240,000 kilometers.
Transmission The five-speed manual transmissions of the Ford Focus 2 model had two versions for low-power and medium-power engines. The manual transmission for the 1.4 and 1.6 liter engines is less reliable. Very often in such manual transmissions the input shaft bearing and synchronizers fail. The second version of the mechanic is considered non-killable. Its resource exceeds the mileage of even the very first copies of the Ford Focus 2 model today. The four-speed automatic transmission for the Ford Focus 2 is also considered to be very reliable. It is not serviceable, that is, the transmission oil in the gearbox does not need to be changed.
Chassis The weakest part of the rear suspension is the levers. Their resource does not exceed 70,000 kilometers. The steering rack on the Focus 2 runs long enough and is not afraid of dirt roads.
Electrician If handicraft masters did not interfere with the wiring of the car, then it will last a very long time and will not create problems for the owner.

The Ford Focus 2 was one of the best-selling golf cars between 2005 and 2008. The second generation Focus was expected to be sold in the same quantities as the first generation, and today we can safely say that the developers did not lose and the car became very popular among motorists and fully met their expectations. Ford Focus 2 is available in three types. body - sedan, three and five-door hatchback and station wagon. Mainly in the secondary market there are Spanish, German and Russian assembled cars.

Ford Focus 2 began to be produced in 2005, and almost after the start of sales, the car became one of the leaders in sales due to the adequate price, high-quality assembly and a large selection of trim levels. In 2008, the manufacturer carried out a restyling, after which the car acquired a more charismatic and modern design. In the secondary market, the second generation of cars can be found in various trim levels, from the basic "Ambiente" to the top-end "Titanium". In total, buyers were offered five configurations to choose from.

Weaknesses Ford Focus 2 with mileage

For Ford Focus 2, four petrol engines were provided with a volume of 1.4 (80 HP), 1.6 (100 HP), 1.8 (125 HP) and 2.0 (145 HP), as well as diesel versions. 1.6 (90 and 109 HP), 1.8 (115 HP) and 2.0 (136 HP). The 1.4 power unit is quite rare and only on cars in the basic configuration, most of the cars with such an engine have practically exhausted their resource today, since such cars were mainly bought in a taxi fleet. Engine 1.8 can present a lot of negative emotions, the main problem lies in the throttle valve and the control unit, because of this, the engine may stall and will not start the first time, and constantly float at idle speed. This problem is treated by installing firmware from a two liter engine. Also, when choosing a car with a 1.8 engine, you need to look so that it is dry, since it often breaks through the gaskets of the valve cover and cylinder head in it.

During the operation of a car with a gasoline engine, you need to be prepared for high fuel costs. So, for example, a 1.6-liter engine paired with mechanics in the city consumes 10 - 11 liters per hundred, and in a two-liter engine with an active driving mother, the consumption can be up to 15 liters per hundred kilometers. Diesel engines are not whimsical in their work, excellent torque and moderate fuel consumption (6 - 8 liters per 100 km), however, it should be remembered that a diesel engine is sensitive to the quality of diesel fuel.

Transmission

All engines except 1.4 could be equipped with an automatic transmission or a manual transmission, with a 1.4 engine, only a manual transmission was installed. All motors paired with a manual transmission provide a good dynamic ride. Unfortunately, such words cannot be said about the automatic transmission, since it works quite slowly. Both transmissions have a considerable resource of work and are considered one of the main advantages of the second generation Ford Focus, even cars with a mileage of more than 150,000 km do not cause any particular complaints in this regard.

A manual transmission can come as an unpleasant surprise in the form of difficult reverse gear shifting, which is accompanied by a crunch, this problem is explained by the lack of synchronizers, so after constant misuse, reverse gear starts to fly out. It is this drawback that should be paid attention to when choosing a used Ford Focus 2.

Suspension reliability Ford Focus 2

If we talk about the suspension Ford Focus 2, then first you need to mention that its design is quite unusual, as for a golf class car of that time, here a MacPherson strut is installed in front, and a multi-link in the back. This arrangement gives the car excellent handling and a good ride.

Front suspension parts resource:

  • Original struts and stabilizer bushings have a resource of 50 - 70 thousand km.
  • Silent blocks are capable of serving 90 - 100 thousand km.
  • The thrust bearings run up to 90,000 kilometers.
  • Ball joints 100 - 120 thousand km.
  • Hub bearings will last no more than 100,000 km.
  • Shock absorbers 120 - 150 thousand km

The rear suspension, if you drive in a big city on a good road and occasionally drive onto a country road, will last up to 100 thousand km, and if on bad ones, then there will be no more than 70,000 km of service lines. And if the rear suspension required repair, then it is better to do a major overhaul, if you do not want to visit the service station once a week.

Salon.

The interior of the Ford Focus 2 is aesthetic and laconic, and the driver of average height will be comfortable enough to sit, however, there are many reviews of tall owners (185 cm and above) that there will be not enough legroom, and there will also be little space for the passenger sitting behind the driver. On the forums, the owners, in their reviews, claim that many crickets settle in the salon of cars assembled at a Russian plant over time, and cars brought from Spain or Germany do not have such a drawback. But as domestic operating experience has shown, cars that are assembled in the European Union really have better materials for interior trim, but extraneous sounds appear in them over time, and the older the car, the more sounds.

Outcome:

Ford Focus 2 has a small number of shortcomings, and in terms of value and quality, the car remains the most attractive in its class. Most likely, this is why this car is quite in demand in the secondary market to this day. When choosing this used car, you need to be extremely careful, since cars of this brand serve in taxis and rentals, and there they are exploited mercilessly.

Advantages:

  • Reliability of engines and transmission.
  • Controllability.
  • Viney and comfortable suspension.
  • Roomy salon.
  • Not expensive to maintain.
  • There are a large number of non-original spare parts on the market.

Disadvantages:

  • Weak paintwork.
  • High fuel consumption of gasoline engines.
  • Noisy salon.
  • Small trunk.
