When in 1976 the plant in Tolyatti mastered the production of the VAZ-2106 model, which was redesigned for domestic operating conditions from the RAT 124 Speciale of the 1972 model, no one could have imagined that it would become the most popular and mass production of the Volga Automobile Plant.

The "Six" differs from the VAZ-2103 in a more powerful 80-horsepower VAZ-2106 engine with a working volume of 1.6 liters, a different electrical circuit and a modified design of the body and interior. So, the front dual headlights received plastic "glasses", the radiator lining was changed, there are other bumpers with plastic "fangs" and "corners", the rear lights are combined with license plate illumination, plastic "gaskets" between the radiator grille and headlights. Compared to the Moskvich cars, these 5-seater sedans, distinguished by better dynamics and a really comfortable interior, were the height of comfort and prestige for a wide section of motorists in the USSR. In the late 1970s, the VAZ-2106 immediately gained fame as a "chic" and high-speed car, but expensive and less "practical" than other Zhiguli. Decent dynamics for that time (maximum 150 km / h and 16 s to 100 km / h), embossed seats with headrests, a dashboard with a tachometer and excellent sound insulation - there was something to appreciate.

In 1979, the plant launched the production of less powerful VAZ-21061 modifications with a 1.5-liter 71-horsepower VAZ-2103 engine and VAZ-21063 with a 1.3-liter 64-horsepower VAZ-21011 engine. They were not popular among the people, but the scale of their production increased (especially 21063), and in the conditions of the Soviet shortage, the consumer had to put up with a combination of an expensive and heavy body with a weak engine, which noticeably worsened the dynamics. Since 1980, they began to mount Ozone type 2107 carburetors. Changes in electrics due to changing technology occurred constantly. In 1977, machines began to be equipped with new terminals and wiring connections, and from 1986 a new relay was installed.

In 1982, the first modernization of the car was carried out. On the VAZ-2106, they began to mount modernized 75-horsepower (according to the new GOST) VAZ-2106 engines. Reflectors were no longer installed on the rear wing along the molding line. In 1988, the exhaust system was upgraded: a disposable gasket and nut were installed in it.

In 1990, VAZ mastered a kind of Lux package - VAZ-21065 with a standard VAZ-2106 engine with a contactless ignition system, a Solex carburetor (21053-1107010-03), halogen headlights, improved upholstery and other seat headrests. This modification was produced with a 1500 engine, "five" bumpers, rear window electric heating, a more powerful generator, a five-speed gearbox. Export modifications of the VAZ-21064 outwardly differed from the VAZ-21065 in bumpers with built-in turn signals and a slightly different electrical circuit. Since 1985, at first, for export modifications, then sometimes for "internal" ones, they began to install a 5-speed gearbox of the VAZ-2112 type, and later of the VAZ-21074 type, which significantly reduces fuel consumption on the highway and engine noise.

By the end of the 1980s, this model with modifications remained the most massive and popular in the VAZ program. Of course, it was no longer considered prestigious, but the good memory of the first Zhiguli family supported a steady demand for the Six. It was not affected even by the dominance of the low-power modification of the VAZ-21063 and the sharp deterioration in the quality of assembly and components in the 1990s. The car eventually became so affordable that it moved into the category of unpretentious "workhorses". He also has a permanent army of admirers. However, now the VAZ-2106 is still gradually losing ground, primarily due to the obsolescence of the design and interior, as well as the rather low driving qualities that are organically inherent in the classic layout. Nevertheless, the "six" has every chance to celebrate its quarter-century anniversary on the assembly line.

Thin doors without impact bars no longer fully meet modern safety requirements, and the high noise level in the cabin of the latest models does not indicate poor insulation, but engine and transmission defects, which are now by no means uncommon, as is the destruction of the front axle beam . Such was the quality of components at the VAZ ... In addition, with the loss of prestige of the model, moldings were no longer installed on modifications with the cheapest equipment, and in general they reduced chrome in the finish to a minimum, which nevertheless did not make the car more modern (especially since fashion returned to chrome in car decor). The lack of electric heating of the rear window can be attributed to a significant drawback of such configurations.

The most unfortunate detail of the interior design can be called a thin and slippery steering wheel. However, the model 21065 comes across another, more modern, smaller size. But in 1977, history begins, which completely replaced its predecessor both from the assembly line and from the market. The six was equipped with several types of engines: 1.6 l (80 hp), 1.5 l (74 hp), 1.3 l (64 hp). The history of the car has three decades, during this time a lot has changed in it, though not all for the better.

The main thing is that the appearance remained, exactly the same as motorists liked. At the end of 2001, AvtoVAZ completely closed the conveyor on which the "six" was produced. It was converted for the production of a more promising and modern "ten". But the management could not afford to close the VAZ 2106 project, so the model was produced at IZH-Auto until 2006.

Differences VAZ 2106 from its predecessors

The style center of the Volga Automobile Plant in 1974 began to develop a new project, which originally bore the name 21031.   • grilles for ventilation in the rear pillars;
  • and most importantly, the emblem of the Zhiguli plant appeared.

The interior of the model has also undergone changes:

  • on the front seats, the headrests can be adjusted in a vertical plane;
  • alarms appeared in the controls;
  • on the right hand is a switch that allows you to control the windshield washer;

The classic VAZ 2106 in those years also had a luxury package, which differed from a simple one in the presence of a radio, a rear window heater and a rear fog lamp.

Engine and transmission

Especially for the new model, the 2103 engine was redone. The diameter of each cylinder was increased by 3 mm, and this gave an increase in volume of almost 0.3 liters. As a result, the working volume became equal to 1.6 liters. The torque increased by 12 percent, but it was not possible to achieve 80 hp. With. Everything rested on the design of the intake system, which the experts decided not to change. Therefore, the VAZ classic has many interchangeable components, which simplifies repairs.

The history of the checkpoint is also interesting, because for the "six" its own box was developed, which a little later began to be installed on the Niva SUVs. By analogy with the car of the third model, the “six” was decided to be produced in two versions with smaller engines. History of changes in model 2106 over the years of production

The entire history of the model has many changes in appearance and interior. True, they are all very small. When the "troika" left the assembly line, the VAZ 2106 began to change the moldings. Instead of chrome, plastic was used, there was no edging on the wheel arches, the reflectors that had become familiar disappeared from the rear fenders. Even the nameplate, which originally had an eye-catching cherry background, has been drastically changed to black. The chrome-plated grilles on the ventilation holes were replaced with plastic ones.

By the end of the 80s. the VAZ 2106 car has already undergone a lot of changes, it was possible to buy a car that was somewhat worse in functionality than it was produced a decade earlier. Instead of lanterns, cheap reflectors appeared in the doors. It's convenient, but not as pretty.

Rear drum brakes came from the “five” in the VAZ 2106, and the caps from the wheels left, as did the visors between the bumpers and the body to protect against dirt. In the early 90s, the parking brake indicator began to burn constantly, although before that, when the handbrake was pressed, a relay was turned on, causing the lamp to flash.

The machine throughout its history has become simpler and cheaper to manufacture. They even tried to remove the moldings, although they were a peculiar feature of the "six". However, they were quickly returned to their place. By the end of the 90s, the VAZ 2106 car had changed a lot, most of the chrome parts disappeared from it, since they were very expensive to manufacture.

Only inertial seat belts began to be used, and the steering wheel was taken from more modern modifications of the VAZ 2105 car. Even power windows could be ordered if desired: they would be installed from the factory. In 2000, the history of the model continued at IZH-Auto. It was during these years, the last for the "six", that absolutely all chrome parts were abolished: the radiator grille and the rims on the rear lights. Prices for cars continued to grow, although the quality of the car became noticeably worse.
