Since its launch, the car has sold seven tens of thousands of copies, was coveted on both sides of the ocean, had practically no competitors and alone covered the costs of maintaining the aristocratic "heritage" of the brand.

The fear that the hen will stop laying the golden eggs usually makes the transition from generation to generation as boring as possible. But thank the automotive gods, in February 2011, Wolfgang Dürheimer, a graduate engineer and bright mind from Porsche, was appointed director of Bentley. Coincidentally, he was just the perfect candidate for the third-generation Continental GT project. By the time he had just finished work on the new 911, and whenever a reporter rashly turned off the topic of "perfect German engineering," a slight nostalgia still clouded his eyes and the recorder was guaranteed to get an extra hour of audio recording.

Development of the next Continental GT began in 2012. The morally outdated Phaeton sedan platform gave way to the modular MSB and the main question was what to borrow for the coupe in the magical bins of the VAG empire. There, with the same success, you can assemble a car with the habits of an executive sedan or a sports coupe - it all depends on who makes the shopping list. The rumors that spread from Crewe were intriguing: a preselective transmission, a new all-wheel drive system, a lightweight body.

The premiere of the car came just under the departure of Dürheimer (so coincidentally again) from Bentley. The static presentations got a standing ovation, the ride was scheduled for November last year, but then something went wrong. All preparations were canceled, the hatches were battened down and the radio silence mode was activated. And now, after a full six months, a new meeting was scheduled.

It seemed that Stefan Zilaff's orange trousers appeared on the lawn earlier than himself. Familiar from discreet press photos, the Bentley designer fired a volley from all the turret guns in his wardrobe. The buckles on the polished monks shimmered in the spotlight, the gold buttons of the blazer swayed in time as he threw back, laughing. The evening cocktail before the presentation was gaining momentum, and the chief designer, in a bright style, challenged his own creation, parked in the focus of multi-watt lamps, to a duel.

Really, that evening Stefan could afford any liberties. The new Continental GT is painted so beautifully that its claim to more than just attention - to a place in the design hall of fame - seems well-founded. At the same time, the appearance of a new body does not bring down the shares of the previous two models. When they stood together on the lawn, the novelty attracted most of the eyes, simply by right of debut, but the elegant ponderousness of its predecessors did not seem redundant or ridiculously outdated. The key difference of the new model is the extended wheelbase, which moved the front axle forward by 13.5 centimeters and lengthened the bonnet.

And this is true, because the transition from a running model to a living car obliges to solve a lot of questions, and it is the current chief designer who bears all the responsibility.

For example, for the relief on the body panels. Sophisticated, full of sharp lines, it excites like the silk of a dress on a girl's body, but much stronger because it is made of aluminum. It is impossible to achieve this by stamping, aluminum must be heated to 500 degrees, and then these exciting bends must be molded with compressed Irish air (a contractor was found there), and then cut with a laser. The final result is that you will want to touch someone else's car, even if you did not notice such inclinations behind yourself before.

In its third generation, the car wants to find a younger owner. This is noticeable in the widened arches, in the way the hood is located below, in the innocent aggression with which wide-open round headlights will look at each apex. The new generation uses the same 48-volt Bentley Dynamic Ride electrical system to open and close the stabilizers as the Bentayga. At Bentayga, the advantages of this system were noticeable, but the high body still concealed the breadth of possibilities. Here, sitting much closer to the asphalt, everything becomes more obvious.

The new brains of the air suspension help to keep exactly relative to the road. Continuous Damping Control monitors vehicle speed and wheel-to-body distance, constantly determining the correct volume of air in the cylinders.

Dealing with the next mother-in-law's tongue (and without spreading his face on the side window), you notice how the torque distribution system works, restraining the inner wheels to turn with pads, and, as if on an invisible rail, bringing the car into the next turn. The new electric power steering and the variable gear ratio make it possible to attack without intercepting the steering wheel, and it is quite easy to control the almost five-meter car on serpentines.

The 55:45 weight distribution is offset by a new all-wheel drive system with an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch, which replaces the Torsen center differential. By default, on dry asphalt, the whole moment goes to the rear wheels, and as soon as the surface becomes slippery, the car becomes all-wheel drive. Together with the lower moment of inertia due to the centrally shifted engine body, this gives a light nose feel.

Light nose? Seriously? No, this is just an impression, because the engine is still powered by the W12. This engine has been seriously redesigned, a combination of direct and conventional injection has appeared, which allows for variable consumption and emissions (and the engine now meets the strict standards of the second phase of Euro 6). The new turbos can reach peak torque in a third of the time required by the old, while the six-cylinder shutdown system and start-stop system diligently save fuel.

But this obligatory bullshit is about some fake W12. After all, in essence, these are 900 Newton meters of torque, which are available from 1350 rpm and go on a flat shelf up to 5000 rpm. This is about "three and seven to a hundred", this is about 626 horsepower ...

Everything is comparable to the performance of the combat Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid, and everyone who ever opened the gas on it remembers how wild acceleration becomes in the most extreme driver mode, how a line of gears furiously beat on the mechatronic innards of the central tunnel, like mad she runs like a dog from apex to apex ...

The Continental GT is fast, but not rage. The "diesel" characteristic of this engine requires the driver to get used to it, and in short races between turns, at first it is necessary to press on the brake longer than on the gas. The eight-speed PDK with a wet clutch also does not fully understand what to do with all this torque shaft and sometimes starts to go through gears in a chaotic mode, pushing and jerking the entire body. It was precisely with the refinement of the preselective robot that that delay of six months was associated, but it was still not possible to perfectly coordinate the PDK with the motor.

True, this is less noticeable in the main habitat of this car - at the exit from the residential area onto the main roadway, where you need to take the left lane and, having heard the navigator's female voice: "Straight, three hundred kilometers," give free rein to the right foot. At this point, the massive rear end of this elegant car crouches to the ground and the elliptical taillights begin to recede. Graceful, sedate, but non-stop.

The 2018-2019 Bentley Continental GT is a high-end Gran Turismo sports coupe for long-distance travel. In fact, such a purpose lies in the body, the British himself is rarely used outside the city. The new generation was presented in 2017 at a closed presentation, and then the world premiere took place in Frankfurt.

At the bottom of the body sidewall, there is a massive recess with an integrated silver gill and a line extending from it, enveloping the body at the rear.

All of them provide a high level of comfort to anyone who happens to be on them. If the Continental of the two previous generations were built on the platform of the Volkswagen Phaeton sedan, then the new model was created on the basis of a liftback. Recoil - 635 hp and 900 Nm instead of 590 hp. and 720 Nm from the previous model. At high revs, the exhaust flaps open, making it easier for the engine to breathe and amplifying the sound. Acceleration time to 100 km / h - 3.7 s, maximum speed - 333 km / h.

The Panamera also has a double wishbone suspension at the front, multi-link design at the rear and three-chamber air struts that hold 60% more air than the previous model and can adapt to any road conditions. But in addition, active stabilizers from Bentayga appeared: their electric actuators operate on a 48-volt network. In a word, the British coupe should become comfortable and at the same time a driver's one.

The interior is a revolution by Bentley standards. The new Continental GT was the first model of the brand with a virtual instrument cluster, although the traditional dials are drawn on the display and cannot be changed. And in the center of the front panel, the resourceful British have placed a rotating three-sided section. In a parked car, it is turned with a dull side, after turning on the ignition, a 12.3-inch touchscreen appears, and on the third side there are three analog devices (outside temperature indicator, compass and chronometer). The driver can turn this "drum" with the desired panel by pressing a button on the console.

Fortunately, Bentley hasn't gotten around to replacing all of the buttons with touchpads yet.
