5 doors SUVs

History of BMW X5 / BMW X5

The BMW X5 is the first full-fledged SUV in BMW's long history. Thanks to the impressive ground clearance, permanent all-wheel drive and independent suspension of all wheels, the car is designed for driving on all types of roads. The debut took place in January 1999 at the Detroit Auto Show. It entered the European market in the spring of 2000.

The BMW X5 is based on a completely new platform. Unlike classic SUVs, this one has a monocoque body. The design turned out to be bright and respectable. The back door is double-leaf. There is no provision for a spare wheel at the rear. The luggage compartment volume is large, and the very configuration of the luggage compartment does not allow transporting bulky items.

Inside, the comfort and luxury of a luxury car reigns supreme. A lot of leather and natural wood inserts are used in the decoration. The steering wheel has a ton of adjustments. The driver's and passenger's seats can also be customized as desired. High seating position provides excellent visibility.

The rich list of standard equipment includes automatic climate control, an electric glass sunroof, front and side airbags, heated front and rear seats, a 6-disc CD-Changer audio system, xenon headlights, headlight washers, a rain sensor, and alloy wheels.

The BMW X5 is powered by an all-aluminum 4.4-liter V8 engine with 286 hp. He is able to accelerate the car to a speed of 100 km / h in just 7.5 seconds. Moreover, thanks to the proprietary system of variable valve timing Double Vanos, the engine works with almost maximum efficiency in almost the entire speed range. The power unit is paired with a hydromechanical 5-speed Steptronic transmission.

The SUV has an independent suspension of all wheels, and the distribution of torque along the axles is monitored by electronics, which brakes the slipping wheels, thereby, contributing to the transfer of more torque to the other wheels. The rear suspension is equipped with a static-load-independent ride height control system, which is achieved using electronically controlled air springs.

The braking system is at a height thanks to giant brake discs that are installed on all wheels and the dynamic braking control system, which is capable of increasing the braking force in critical situations, when the driver begins to actively press the pedal. The downhill descent system deserves special words. A special program maintains a smooth, straight descent from an elevation at a speed of approximately 10-12 km / h.

The car is equipped with literally all known electronic systems. Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) includes conventional ABS, Cornering Brake Control (CBC), DBC (Dynamic Brake Control) and ASC-X (Automatic Stability Control).

In 2003, an updated version of the BMW X5 appears. It features a redesigned body and a range of technical innovations, including a redesigned all-wheel drive system. The modernized version is characterized by a more expressive hood, which gradually merges into the radiator grille, which also differs in its shape from that used on the previous model. The car received a new front bumper, front and rear lights have changed.

The xDrive all-wheel drive system has undergone a major upgrade. It constantly analyzes the road situation and driving mode, and, if necessary, dynamically redistributes the engine torque between the axles. Moreover, this happens not only when driving over rough terrain, but also during high-speed cornering. An electronically controlled multi-plate clutch plays an important role in the operation of the all-wheel drive system, which provides a quick response to changing road conditions.

During the modernization, the X5 received two new engines: a 4.4-liter gasoline V8 and a 3.0-liter common rail diesel. The petrol power unit with Valvetronic valve control, double Vanos and an intake system with a continuously variable intake tract develops a power of 320 hp. and accelerates to 100 km / h in just 7.0 seconds. The maximum speed is 240 km / h if the vehicle is fitted with tires in speed class "V". When fitted with "H" tires, the top speed is electronically limited to 210 km / h. The engine is equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission.

The inline six-cylinder turbodiesel develops 218 hp. With it, the car reaches 100 km / h in 8.3 seconds, and the maximum speed is 210 km / h. With an impressive 500 Nm of torque across a very wide rev range, this engine pulls the car confidently off paved roads and on the steepest mountain slopes. Fuel consumption is low - only 8.6 liters. In the basic configuration, this engine is offered with a six-speed manual transmission, and on request - with a six-speed "automatic".

At the 2006 Paris Motor Show, BMW unveiled the second generation of the SUV. The car became noticeably larger than its predecessor, received a more aggressive and expressive design of the body and interior. The length increased by 20 cm to 4.85 meters, which made it possible to make the interior much more spacious and comfortable, as well as to accommodate an additional 3 row of seats, thereby increasing the capacity of the jeep to seven people. The silhouette retains the same proportions, the lower body is protected by a black plastic body kit. The body surfaces have become more plastic, sculpted. Attention is drawn to the original headlights and the distinctive radiator grille. Along the edges of the front bumper there are "air intakes" highlighted with contrasting material. Wheels 18 inches in "standard", on request - 19 or 20. The BMW X5 has the best indicator in the class for aerodynamics - Cx 0.33

The interior has become more conservative and cozy, thanks to the smoothed outlines. The cabin has a new dashboard. The BMW X5 is equipped with AdaptiveDrive. With the help of numerous sensors, AdaptiveDrive constantly analyzes a variety of indicators: travel speed, roll angles, body and wheel acceleration, body height. This information is used to control the stabilizer swing motors and the shock absorber solenoid valves. In this way, the lateral roll and the damping force are constantly adjusted depending on the driving conditions.

The base engine was a three-liter six-cylinder petrol unit with a capacity of 265 horsepower. With it, the X5 accelerates to 100 km / h in 8.3 seconds. An eight-cylinder 4.8-liter engine with a capacity of 367 horsepower accelerates the SUV to "hundreds" in just 6.5 seconds, and the maximum speed reaches 240 km / h. The range of gasoline engines is complemented by a three-liter turbodiesel with two 272 hp superchargers.

The technical equipment is at the highest level. The Active Steering system allows the steering gear ratio to be changed according to driving conditions: when parking, you can maneuver without intercepting the steering wheel. The brakes are also difficult - they are automatically cleaned of moisture in wet weather, prepared for emergency braking when the foot is suddenly removed from the gas pedal. When overheating, the smart system applies additional force to the pads. Electronics will help you get started on a steep slope. The X5 comes standard with a parking system with front and rear video cameras.

A head-up display is also available as an option. Important information regarding driving parameters, such as speed or navigation prompts, are displayed ergonomically directly on the windshield, directly in the driver's field of vision. The third row of seats is also an option, the standard car is five-seater.

In 2010, the manufacturer subjected the model to a restyling. The updated model successfully debuted at the International Geneva Motor Show. The creators were faced with the daunting task of surpassing themselves by making a highly successful car even better.

The updated version features a new grille, enlarged air intakes, a re-shaped front bumper, headlights and taillights. Of particular note are the LED rings that have appeared around the headlights. They look very impressive. The car has become more dynamic and aggressive, while retaining all its elegance. The next item on the list of exterior changes is a new color scheme (the popular brown shade has appeared, the number of elements in the area of the front and rear apron, painted in the body color, has increased). The picture is complemented by a new design of light-alloy wheels.

The interior changes have practically not affected, the usual Bavarian comfort. Ample transformation possibilities, rich serial equipment, high-quality materials. Additionally, a third row of seats can be installed, which allows you to comfortably transport up to seven people. The convertible trunk can hold from 620 liters. up to 1750 l. Another nice addition is the cup holders (which were absent on the pre-styling version). The new generation of the iDrive control system, which comes as standard, offers additional possibilities for the comfortable and intuitive operation of all standard and optional functions of the audio, navigation and telecommunication systems. An optional 8.8-inch iDrive display, 4-zone climate control, DVD Entertainment, panoramic glass roof, ventilated front seats and heated steering wheel are available.

The main changes are hidden under the hood. All motors have become more powerful, and at the same time more economical and environmentally friendly. Customers now have a choice of a pair of petrol engines - in-line six-cylinder 35i / 306 hp. and V8 50i / 407 hp, as well as turbodiesel six-cylinder 30d / 245 hp. and 40d / 306 hp. By the way, gasoline engines have completely changed: the place of the previous flagship atmospheric volume of 4.8 liters was taken by a 4.4-liter with an adjustable twin turbocharging. And the former well-deserved "six" was replaced by a more advanced one, with one turbocharger. All engines comply with the Euro 5 emission standard. A well-coordinated pair with modernized engines is a new eight-speed "automatic" ZF (before the box was a six-speed). The gearbox has a new torque converter with reduced losses and an increased range of gear ratios.

The 2010 BMW X5 embodies almost all the latest technological innovations developed by Bavarian designers. Among the principal innovations in the equipment of the X5 2010 can be called the active steering "Activ Steering", which was previously used on BMW coupes and sedans, which allows for higher maneuverability and controllability. In addition, for the first time in this class, the AdaptiveDrive system, which unites all active suspension elements (active dampers that change the stiffness and electronically controlled anti-roll bars), has appeared. By receiving information from numerous sensors, the computer of the new BMW X5 evaluates the situation and ensures a stable position of the body over the road, changing the required characteristics. Thus, rolls during cornering are practically eliminated.

The BMW ConnectedDrive program for the BMW X5 offers a wide range of driver assistance systems and services for even greater comfort and safety. In addition to the head-up display, adaptive headlights, automatic high / low beam changeover, parking distance control (PDC) and a rear view camera including Surround View, the new BMW X5 also offers Lane Departure Assist. , speed limit indicator and Side View system.

As always, the level of security is at its best. The standard equipment includes front and side airbags, side headbags for the first and second rows of seats, three-point automatic seat belts for all seats with tension control and active head restraints for the front seats, as well as ISOFIX anchorages for installing a child seat in the rear parts of the cabin. In addition, the standard equipment includes tire puncture indicators, safe runflats and adaptive brake lights.

The debut of the third generation (factory index F15) will take place at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2013. The platform of the novelty has hardly changed, the length of the wheelbase has remained the same, the front "double-lever" and the multi-link structure at the rear have practically remained the same - the modifications have been reduced to a change in geometry, and the springs and shock absorbers have been slightly reconfigured in order to achieve a more comfortable ride. Body rigidity has increased by 6%. Dimensions: length - 4886 mm, width - 1938 mm, height - 1762 mm, wheelbase - 2933 mm. The car became wider and lower (by five and four millimeters, respectively), and added 32 mm in length, which completely went into the front overhang. The ground clearance has decreased from 222 mm to 209 mm. The curb weight of the crossover has decreased by 150 kg compared to its predecessor.

The characteristic features of the "front end" of the novelty include a narrower head optics and a new bumper with a more geometric design. The hood has stretched out in length, the family nostrils are now not piled back, but stand upright. The front air intakes and 3D LED taillights have been redesigned. On the side, there are interesting details such as a neat cut in the front fenders and a dynamic line running through the door handles. The car began to look more modern and presentable.

The drag coefficient decreased from 0.33 to 0.31. Last but not least, the reason was the through-slots along the edges of the front bumper, due to which negative turbulence in the area of the front wheels was reduced, and the active louvers in the front air intake.

Two design lines are available - Design Pure Experience (unpainted wheel arch trim, matt silver painted vertical grille trims) and Design Pure Excellence (body-colored wheel arch trims, black nostril trims with high-gloss chrome trim at the front).

The updated BMW X5 received a more spacious interior, which can be optionally equipped with a third row of seats. Front seats with developed lateral supports boast a large number of electrical adjustments and memory for two positions. On the second row, there will be enough space for people whose height is more than 180 centimeters; a flat floor should be attributed to the pleasant moments of the "gallery". The backrest folds down in a 40:20:40 ratio. The luggage compartment is now 650-1870 liters. The upper part of the double-leaf tailgate is equipped with an electric drive as standard, which opens and closes when you press the buttons in the cabin or on the key fob. The raised floor, raised on a gas support, hides a deep niche from the eyes.

The quality of the materials has been raised to an even higher level, and the contrasting inserts add a special chic. The new interior comes standard in high-gloss black wood trim with chrome accents. The variety of options for leather upholstery is huge. The larger iDrive display (10.25-inch diagonal) now sits proudly above the center console, behind the screen sits a speaker for the high-quality Bang & Olufsen audio system. The overall styling of the lower center console has barely changed. The iDrive control unit is located to the right of the gearbox selector, on the left are the buttons responsible for the operating modes of the suspension and power unit and other control keys.

The base engine is a 3.0-liter Twin Turbo, in-line six-cylinder with 306 horsepower and 406 Nm of torque, which is transmitted through an eight-speed automatic transmission. This motor accelerates the car to 100 km / h in 6.2 seconds.

The top-of-the-line X5 xDrive50i is powered by a 4.4-liter Twin Turbo V8 engine that produces 450 horsepower and 650 Nm of torque. This engine is also paired with an eight-speed automatic. He accelerates the SUV to "hundreds" in 5 seconds. The maximum speed is 250 km / h. In the combined cycle, the fuel consumption is 10.4 liters.

The xDrive30d modification hides a 258 hp in-line turbo diesel "six" under the hood. Torque of 560 Nm is available at 1500-3000 rpm. The gearbox is an eight-speed automatic. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h takes 6.9 seconds. In the combined cycle, the fuel consumption is 6.2 liters.

The smallest was the diesel version with a 218-horsepower 2-liter engine.

Basic modifications of the X5 are offered both with all-wheel drive and with rear. The xDrive all-wheel drive system is implemented through the use of a multi-plate clutch, which is electronically controlled. The transfer case is 1.4 kg lighter than the previous generation.

In November 2013, Russia started accepting applications for the new BMW X5 (index "F15"). The third generation of the famous "X5" was officially presented during the Frankfurt Motor Show, and its production was established in the USA, where, as in Europe, sales of the new items began a little earlier. Initially, only three modifications of the American-assembled crossover were offered in Russia, but in May 2014 several more versions were added to them, the production of which has already been established at the Avtotor plant in Kaliningrad.

Connoisseurs of the classic brutal forms of "X5", the new look of the crossover can be upset - after all, the car has acquired some "feminine" features, more dynamic side lines, front and rear design with design elements from current BMW passenger models, as well as sports air intakes along the edges of the front bumper ( driving the oncoming flows into the space under the wings). On the other hand, the appearance of the BMW X5 2014-2015 model year has become more modern and approached the new design standards of the Bavarian automaker.

In terms of dimensions, there were no very noticeable changes: the length extended by 32 mm to the mark of 4886 mm, the wheelbase remained at the level of 2933 mm, the width increased by 5 mm and now is 1938 mm, and the height is 1762 mm, which is 13 mm lower than its predecessor ... Due to the greater use of aluminum and other lightweight materials, the weight of the car has decreased by an average of 90 kg, and the aerodynamic drag coefficient of the body has improved from 0.33 to 0.31. Both parameters significantly influenced the dynamic characteristics of the crossover, but more on that later.

The interior of the BMW X5 crossover has changed much more noticeably. The new architecture of the front panel brought the "F15" closer to the modern style of the German automaker, at the same time tightening up and ergonomics. The quality of the materials used in the interior decoration has become even better, but the fit of some elements, in particular the glove compartment lid, leaves much to be desired. Visibility from the driver's seat remained almost unchanged, since the glazing scheme remained practically unchanged, but the side mirrors became slightly smaller, which increased the volume of blind spots.

The layout of the cabin is still five-seater with the possibility of ordering the installation of two more third-row seats for passengers whose height is no more than 1.5 meters. The level of equipment has become noticeably better: front seats with electric adjustment and memory of settings are already available in the base, a 10.25-inch display flaunts on the center console, and for an additional fee, you can install dual-zone climate control and an entertainment system with two monitors for rear passengers.

The useful trunk space in the third generation of the crossover is noticeably larger than that of its predecessor. In the standard state, the trunk holds 650 liters, but due to the rear row of seats, folding in a ratio of 40:20:40, it can be increased to 1870 liters, not counting the niche under the floor. The upper flap of the boot lid is equipped with an electric drive, controlled both from the button in the passenger compartment and from the remote control.

Specifications. Initially, the engine line for the 3rd generation BMW X5 offered only three options for the power plant, but after the launch of production in Kaliningrad, three more engines were added to it, which significantly expanded the choice of options.

  • The basic version of the xDrive25d received an in-line 4-cylinder 2.0-liter turbo diesel with direct injection and 16-valve timing under the hood, which is capable of producing up to 218 hp. power at 4400 rpm and provide up to 450 Nm of torque in the range from 1500 to 2500 rpm. With the lower engine "X5" will be able to make a starting spurt from 0 to 100 km / h in an acceptable 8.2 seconds, while the upper speed limit is limited to 220 km / h. As for fuel consumption, the xDrive25d modification eats up about 5.9 liters of fuel on average.
  • xDrive30d the Germans equipped the N57 D30 inline diesel engine with six cylinders with a volume of 2993 cm³ and a return of 249 hp. at 4000 rpm. The engine is no longer new, it has proven itself well, but has undergone major modernization. In particular, the injection pressure was increased (from 1600 to 1800 bar), the mass of the engine was reduced and the operation of almost all electronic controls was reconfigured. We also note that the diesel is equipped with a new turbocharger with variable geometry, third-generation battery injection and Bosch piezoelectric injectors. The engine torque is increased to 560 Nm at 1500 - 3000 rpm, which will accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in just 6.9 seconds, while the upper speed limit will be 230 km / h. According to the manufacturer's calculations, the average fuel consumption of this engine is at around 6.2 liters.
  • The same diesel engine, but with a triple turbocharging system (N57S), will decorate the engine compartment of the xDriveM50d modification. In this case, the maximum power is about 381 hp. at 4000 - 4400 rpm, and the peak torque falls at around 740 Nm in the range from 2000 to 3000 rpm. Such characteristics will provide the crossover with impressive traction, allowing it to make a starting spurt from 0 to 100 km / h in almost a record 5.3 seconds for the class, but at the same time, they will require at least 6.7 liters of fuel for every 100 kilometers.
  • Between the two engines described above is another diesel modification - xDrive40d, which received a 6-cylinder 3.0-liter power unit with a capacity of 313 hp, developed at 4400 rpm. Like previous engines, this engine is equipped with direct fuel injection and a turbocharging system. The peak torque of the unit is 630 Nm and is kept in the range of 1500 - 2500 rpm, which allows the crossover to accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in 6.1 seconds or reach 236 km / h maximum speed, spending about 6.4 liters fuel in the combined cycle.

There will be gasoline engines in Russia, but only two:

  • The role of the base unit will be played by the unit intended for the xDrive35i modification. It has 6 cylinders with a displacement of 3.0 liters (2979 cm³), a 24-valve timing belt, direct fuel injection and a turbocharging system. The maximum power of the junior gasoline engine is 306 hp, developed at 5800 rpm, but the peak torque falls at around 400 Nm, held in the range from 1200 to 5000 rpm. The xDrive35i modification is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km / h in 6.5 seconds or reaching 235 km / h of maximum speed, while consuming about 8.5 liters of gasoline of the brand not lower than AI-95.
  • The N63B44 petrol engine with 8 cylinders V-arrangement and an advanced twin turbocharging system is designed for the X5 version of the xDrive50i, produced only in the USA. The engine displaces 4395 cc and is equipped with direct fuel injection, an air / water-cooled intercooler, Valvetronic variable valve travel and Twin Scroll turbochargers. The gasoline engine is capable of producing up to 450 hp. power at 5500 rpm and 650 Nm of torque at 2000 - 4500 rpm, while spending about 10.4 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers. With regard to dynamic characteristics, with this power unit, the crossover is capable of accelerating to a maximum of 250 km / h, while spending no more than 5.0 seconds on the "starting jerk".

All available engines fully comply with the Euro-6 environmental standard, and in the "Eco Pro" mode they can save up to 20% of fuel due to a "cunning" technological solution: at speeds in the range of 50-160 km / h with full release of the gas pedal, the gearbox is automatically turns on neutral, converting the crossover to coasting. The manufacturer promises another 5% savings due to a “smart” connection with the navigation system, which, knowing the route configuration, will regularly prompt the driver when to slow down so that he does not have to brake before turning.

As a gearbox for all three engines, the ZF8HP 8-band automatic transmission, which first appeared in 2008 on the BMW 760Li sedan, was selected. Avtomat was seriously modified by rewriting the control program, reducing its weight and reducing the friction loss of parts by 4%.

According to the developers, the BMW X5 is the founder of the SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle) class: sports cars for outdoor activities, and therefore, to maintain an appropriate image, driving tests are carried out in cities that previously hosted the Olympics: Atlanta in 1999 (E53), Athens in 2006 year (E70), but the F15 was "run in" in Vancouver.

In terms of driving performance on paved roads, the crossover has added practically nothing, but the off-road passability of the car has noticeably decreased. This is due to the short suspension travel and a decrease in the ground clearance (from 222 mm to 209 mm), which makes it quite easy to catch on the bottom on large bumps or pits. The crossover is still equipped with the xDrive permanent all-wheel drive system, based on an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch in the front wheel drive (60% of the traction goes to the rear axle). Of the changes made, we single out the reduction in the transfer case weight, which also received new settings.

The design of the crossover chassis has remained the same: an independent double wishbone suspension system is used at the front, and a multi-link structure in the basic version and air suspension in the top versions of the equipment are installed at the rear. Not without any changes: both suspensions have slightly changed geometry, re-tuned shock absorbers, and most of the components are lightened by increasing the proportion of aluminum.
All wheels of the third generation are equipped with ventilated disc brakes, and the steering is complemented by an electromechanical amplifier.

Options and prices. In the basic equipment of the BMW X5 (F15) of the junior xDrive25d modification, the manufacturer included 18-inch alloy wheels, bi-xenon headlights, circular parking sensors, a rear-view camera, a safety steering column, extended power accessories, dynamic cruise control, ABS, DSC, DBC and HDC systems , central locking with emergency sensor, leather interior, dual-zone climate control, multimedia system, heated front seats, electrically adjustable and memory settings, ISOFIX mounts, sun glazing, electric boot lid and a number of other useful little things.

The starting price for the Russian-assembled xDrive25d version is 3,415,000 rubles. Modification X5 xDrive30d is offered at a price of 4 395 000 rubles. The xDrive40d version is priced at 5,040,000 rubles, while much less equipped versions of the xDrive40d of the American assembly can still be ordered at a price of 3,464,000 rubles. The xDrive M50d crossovers, which will not be produced in Russia, are offered by dealers for at least 4,338,000 rubles. The most affordable version of the BMW X5 with a gasoline engine in the face of the xDrive50i modification, also imported from overseas, will cost 3,838,000 for now, but the equipment of this crossover will be an order of magnitude lower than in the xDrive35i version of the Russian assembly, which the Germans estimated at 4,375,000 rubles.

Until recently, this car was considered in our country a business card of successful and wealthy people, having managed to be known as an image and very prestigious means of transportation. Moreover, the BMW X5 is not just a stylish and expensive car. This model demonstrates ideal performance when it comes to driving disciplines. Note the standard feature for most BMW models - the emphasis on rear-wheel drive (the rear wheels account for about 62% of the torque). Not without other famous "proprietary" features, among which - powerful and at the same time smooth dynamics, especially noticeable when changing gears. The car is extremely comfortable, has a high level of controllability, is not afraid of country roads of "medium difficulty level" (but still it is better not to test the car by driving on complete off-road, it is not intended for this).

This model seems to hint to the driver: "Be active, aggressive, confident!" Having a similar driving style, the BMW X5 can quickly lose its condition if the driver uses the car intensively for several years after the purchase (this approach is most pronounced among Americans who are inclined to purchase a car on lease). This should be taken into account if you are planning to buy a used BMW X5 (the choice in favor of cars that came from North America is profitable due to the current exchange rate - the difference between “American” and “European” X5s can be up to $ 10,000!). However, with an attentive and scrupulous approach among the copies from America, you can also choose a good and not too "torn apart" car. A distinctive feature of the BMW X5, which came to us from Canada and the USA, is the additional marking of the speedometer, indicating the speed of movement in miles / hour.

Body and suspension

The body of the BMW X5 is distinguished by its high strength and resistance to corrosion (of course, if the car did not have time to be a participant in a road accident with serious consequences). Unfortunately, there are quite a lot of cars of this model recovered after an accident on the secondary car market in Moscow. Among the common shortcomings, it should be noted that the rear door lock is unreliable (it is often loosened for no good reason). You should not ignore the problem, otherwise neglect of repairs will sooner or later turn a comfortable car into a kind of analogue of a vacuum cleaner.

The reliability of the suspension of a car purchased on the secondary market depends largely on the driving style and accuracy of the previous owner. In practice, no less than a third of newly bought used BMW X5 owners have to deal with replacing the stabilizer struts almost immediately, a quarter - replacing one or two ball joints with a lever. The lower arms of the front suspension can also be a problem - they will most likely have to be changed pretty soon. In fact, it is a consumable for most car owners of this model. As a rule, on powerful modifications of the BMW X5, the lower arms need to be replaced after a mileage of 20,000 kilometers, and after 60,000 kilometers, the same fate awaits the upper arms of the rear suspension. The cost of replacing the lower arms of the front suspension is about 19,000 rubles, the upper arms of the rear suspension - 21,500 rubles and more, and the cost of replacing the steering rack, which often starts knocking after the car has driven about 80,000 kilometers, will be approximately 81,000 rubles.

Engines and transmissions

Let's talk about engines. The most successful options from the entire range offered by the manufacturer are gasoline engines with a volume of 3 liters (with a power of 231 hp) and 4.4 liters (power - 282 hp). The rest of the engines are less common, such as the 4.6L 347bhp petrol engine developed in collaboration with Alpina. A diesel version of a car with a turbo engine can be found on the market even less often (the demand for it is extremely low).

Based on the characteristics of the car, the 4.4-liter V8 engine may seem the most appropriate. But only at first glance - over time, the super-powerful energy of such an engine begins to exert not the best effect on the general condition of the car. Constant exorbitant loads shorten his life: the severity of the engine makes the front suspension wear out ahead of time, and excess torque (especially in combination with an active and aggressive driving style) can ruin the automatic transmission. Automation was installed on many BMW X5s with a 3.0 liter engine and on almost all of its powerful modifications.

V8 engines are often said to be finicky - they are far from suitable fuel of any quality. Compared to them, a three-liter engine may seem completely unpretentious, and it is easier to repair it due to the presence of more thought-out technological approaches. Therefore, if you buy a used BMW X5, we recommend that you opt for this type of engine - it will not seem to you either low-powered or phlegmatic. Still, the presence of 231 horsepower under the hood of the car makes it possible to accelerate the vehicle to a speed of 100 km / h in a matter of seconds (specifically, in 8.8 seconds). True, oil will be consumed no less actively, respectively, it will have to be topped up by about 0.3-0.5 liters for every 1000 kilometers. Many BMW car owners are familiar with this feature of their "pets".

As practice shows, cars with a large engine (4.4 or 4.6 liters) are usually bought by people who are distinguished by an active and assertive driving style - they operate the car for wear and tear. But cars with a three-liter engine are mainly chosen by calm, neat and respectable drivers. They know how (and consider it necessary) to take care of their car, therefore, with a greater degree of probability it is possible to buy a car of this particular modification in good condition. In addition, the 3L BMW X5 is not as expensive as the 4.4L version (primarily due to the difference in customs duties).

Problems

When buying a BMW X5, you should pay special attention to its weak points, which, first of all, include the power windows. The protection of the drive cables is made of plastic, so the power windows often fail even with a slight overload (for example, under the influence of negative temperatures). In such cases, you have to change the entire drive mechanism completely. Subzero temperatures can also cause another common trouble that often happens in winter - freezing of condensate in the crankcase ventilation. Frozen condensate can knock out the oil dipstick or cause an even more serious problem - squeezing out the crankshaft rear oil seal due to oil injection.

The car is "stuffed" with modern electronics that ensure the safety of the driver and passengers (Cornering Brake Control, Dynamic Stability Control, etc.), a high level of comfort in the cabin, easy navigation. The on-board network is reliable, but it can be easily disabled by unauthorized interference in its work - for example, when an alarm or acoustic system is connected by non-professionals. It is better to entrust such manipulations to the employees of a specialized service center. The cost of a car is from 500,000 rubles.

Summary

In conclusion, we can say that the BMW X5 is a vivid example of a prestigious and expensive vehicle (despite some criminal shade of the prevailing image). True, it is very difficult to find a BMW X5 in excellent condition in the secondary market, since most of the owners of these cars prefer to conquer distances aggressively and energetically, squeezing all the juices out of the car. In order not to acquire such a “cake” in the end, do not spare either effort or time for a careful check of all car systems before making the final purchase decision.

By the way, the BMW X5 is a typical example of how dark and impartial the downside of popularity can be. Thefts of this car have long become widespread, and even the most modern and reliable security systems are not able to ensure the safety of its owners. A typical scenario for theft of a BMW X5 involves the use of a pistol or a knife attached to the driver's most vulnerable organs, as well as its subsequent "landing" from the car somewhere far from busy highways. It is simply impossible to completely protect a car from theft, however, you can try to reduce its probability to a minimum by choosing a car of a discreet, unpopular harm of criminal elements of a shade (it is known that black and silver jeeps are the most popular among criminals).

The BMW E53 became the basis for the BMW X5 SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle) class vehicles. E53 was produced from 1999 to 2006. This model was originally developed for the American markets, and since at that time, owned the Range and Land Rover brands, many of the components were borrowed from them. For example, the developers have adopted two systems - the Hill Descent system, and the Off-road engine management system. Other electronic components and engine were taken from the BMW 5 Series E39. Car sales in the US started in 1999 and in 2000 in Europe. The letter "X" in the model name means four-wheel drive, and the number 5 means that the model is based on the 5th series.

In details

The first sketches of the BMW X5 E53 were presented in the late 90s by designer Chris Bangle. Some design elements were also partly borrowed from Range Rover, such as the sketch for the rear doors. But unlike the British Range Rover, the German BMW was conceived as a more sporty car, and in the end this led to a decrease in its off-road performance. In addition, 62% of the torque comes from the rear-wheel drive of the car, which also makes it sportier.

The interior equipment of the car was made according to the most advanced technologies. It was equipped with multimedia capabilities such as Bluetooth, MP3 and DVD navigation. In 2002, the sports model X5 4.6is appeared. In it, both the interior and exterior trim were changed, and the model was equipped with 20-inch rims. In addition, the car has a new engine with a capacity of 342 hp and a volume of 4.6 liters. A few years later, another model will appear, the X5 4.8is, which will be equipped with a 360 hp engine. and a volume of 4.8 liters. It is this model that will later be called the fastest SUV in the world.

Restyling

In 2003, an updated model BMW X5 E53 was presented to the public. The main differences are a new drive, new headlights (taken from the E39), an upgraded engine and several interior trim options. The new drive had more options, so if the old one used a fixed torque value - 38% front and 62% rear wheel drive, then the new one had a built-in system that dynamically distributes engine power towards one or the other drive. Everything depended on a certain road situation, and if it was necessary, then the torque could reach 100% on one of the drives.

The X5 4.4i model was equipped with a new engine, which was developed in 2002, for the 7-series cars. Its power has been increased by 25 hp. In April 2004, the 4.6is, as mentioned above, was replaced by the 4.8is. Its 4.8 liter engine was later used in the 2005 750i. The exterior of the 4.8is has been slightly changed from the 4.6is. For example, the lower bumper began to be painted in the same color as the body. Also, chrome tailpipes were installed and the rims were increased to 20 inches. From 2004 to 2006, the company did not make any changes either in the internal or external equipment of the E53. BMW developers focused all their efforts on creating a new model, which appeared in 2006. Since 2006, she began to produce a new model BMW X5 E70.

New BMW X5
appeared in Russia in December 2014 as a 2015 model. The third generation, contrary to expectations, did not receive a new platform, for which the design and technical filling were significantly updated. The new BMW X5 is assembled in the USA, and from there they are sent to 140 countries of the world, and machine kits for SKD are also sent to several countries. The more compact BMW X3 is also assembled there.

In terms of overall dimensions, the new body has changed little, with the same wheelbase, the length has added insignificant 29 mm. The side of the car hasn't changed much, except for the vents in the front fenders. The taillights are now LED and are almost the same shape as the X3's little brother. The main modernization has affected the front of the car. Typical BMW "nostrils" of the radiator grille began to protrude more forward, there was a relief metal cage. The head optics of the F15 body have also changed as well as the front bumper. The rear bumper has a new lower part, the shape of the exhaust pipes has changed. BMW X5 interior received minor changes in the shape of the front console, although the buttons remained in the same places. A retractable touchscreen monitor above the torpedo can be noted. By the way, in the USA, where this German car was developed and produced, there were modifications to the interior with three rows of seats. That is, now it is quite possible to meet 7-seater salon of the new X5.

Trunk BMW X5 the new generation has hardly changed. As big, practical and functional. And the folding rear backrest in proportions of 40 to 20 and another 40 percent is quite comfortable, increasing the functionality of the vehicle's cargo space. The backrest, which is divided into three parts, allows you to transport rather unusual things without restricting the rear passengers.

Technical characteristics of BMW X5

Characteristics of the Russian version of the BMW X5 not much different from machines offered in other markets. As power units, there are gasoline volumes of 3 and 4.4 liters and diesel engines with a volume of 3 liters, but of different capacities. All engines are turbocharged, and the top version with the M50d diesel engine received triple (!!!) supercharging. The gearbox is either an 8-speed automatic or a sports modification of the same automatic.

All X5 engines make the crossover a very dynamic car, but first things first. So the petrol version with an inline 6-cylinder supercharged engine X5 xDrive35i with a working volume of 3 liters produces 306 horsepower. Acceleration to the first hundred with this engine under the hood is 6.5 seconds. The official fuel consumption in urban conditions is 11.2 liters, in reality this figure is naturally higher. The more powerful X5 xDrive50i with 450 horsepower (4.4 liter V8) accelerates the car to 100 km / h in 5 seconds! True and fuel consumption in the city from 14 liters.

Diesel variants of the BMW X5 xDrive30d, xDrive40d and xDriveM50d have a capacity of 249, 313 and 381 horsepower, respectively. Structurally, all motors are the same, they have one working volume of 3 liters and an in-line 6-cylinder cylinder block. However, one unit is simply supercharged, the other has double supercharging, and the most powerful, third engine has triple supercharging! By the way, the 2015 BMW X5 is the only production car with triple supercharging. What are the dynamics of German American-made diesel engines? According to the manufacturer, the 30d accelerates the car to a hundred in 6.9 seconds, 40d in 5.9 seconds, and the M50d in 5.3 seconds, the fuel consumption in mixed mode is 6.2, 6.3 and 6.7 liters of diesel fuel.

In general, if you choose according to fuel consumption, then the diesel variants of the X-fifth are preferable. Gone are the days when diesels had mediocre dynamics, today diesel units are not inferior to gasoline ones in acceleration dynamics. At the same time, consuming significantly less fuel.
