The best crossovers of the last 10 years. Rating of the best SUVs for Russia, foreign and domestic models

21.06.2023

Due to the fact that the ruble has become weaker this year, many crossovers have risen in price and become unaffordable for Russians. Since cars of this form factor are highly valued in our country, this issue is very pressing for many car enthusiasts. To help them, today we will talk about which budget crossovers of 2018-2019 in Russia best justify their cost. Go.

#10 – Nissan Terrano

Price: 854,000 rubles

The emphasis in the appearance of the new generation Nissan Terrano is on aggression. It is expressed through the front optics with a predatory look, a massive radiator grille and sharp lines of the bumper. All this is observed in the rear part of the body - the shape of the bumper fits perfectly into the style, and the lights complete the image.

By default, the crossover is equipped with a 1.6-liter engine with a power of 114 hp. The unit can be paired with a manual transmission in five or six gears. All-wheel drive, however, is available only in the second case. The fuel consumption of such an engine is 7.5 liters per hundred square meters in mixed mode. The second version of the unit is a two-liter “four” with 143 horses. It consumes from 7.8 to 8.7 liters per hundred. Regardless of the engine chosen, the owner of a Nissan Terrano can be sure that the car will serve him for many years, since the “Japanese” body is made of high-strength steel.

#9 – Hyundai Creta

Price: 810,000 rubles

Hyundai Creta has a fresh and interesting exterior. This was made possible thanks to the unusual angular silhouette, which is perfectly complemented by the lines on the stern. From the front, the radiator grille, designed in the form of a chrome hexagon, attracts attention. On the sides it is decorated with brutal lighting equipment. The rear of the Hyundai Creta is not so interesting and many consider it too narrow, but even if so, the appearance of the SUV does not suffer much from this.

The power palette of the Hyundai Creta is not too rich - only two engines. The first is a 1.6-liter unit with 123 horsepower, which consumes from 6.9 to 7.2 liters and is paired with a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission. The second is a two-liter and 149-horsepower engine, combined with a 6-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is available as an option in both cases. Due to this, Hyundai Creta will be an excellent option for all drivers who value cross-country ability.

No. 8 – Renault Captur

Price: 870,000 rubles

The French SUV Renault Kaptur is in eighth place in our top of the year. When creating the car, the proprietary Renault concept of recent years was used, in which the emphasis was placed on dimensions. Therefore, Renault Kaptur looks massive, but at the same time, impressive. The front part is distinguished by spotlight-type optics and a grille with a large diamond shape. A neatly designed bumper stands apart on the rear body.

The Frenchman's range of power units is presented in two options. The first is a 1.6-liter engine with 114 hp, which is combined with a 5-speed manual transmission, the second is a 2-liter engine with 143 horsepower, which is paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. There is an option to connect all-wheel drive. It goes well with a high ground clearance of 204 mm, which will allow the car to cope not only with Russian potholes, but also off-road. All this is complemented by a high-quality suspension and the same rack and pinion steering wheel, so you won’t feel any discomfort when overcoming obstacles.

No. 7 – Skoda Yeti

Price: 899,000 rubles

The Czech SUV Skoda Yeti has a huge army of fans who appreciate the car for its distinctive appearance. The developer understands this, so as a result of restyling, the exterior of the crossover has remained virtually unchanged. The most significant change was the appearance of a new radiator grille. All other details, in particular the halogen optics, were only slightly retouched.

The car of the Czech brand is supplied to the market with a fairly rich range of engines - three gasoline units and one turbodiesel. The base engine is a 1.2-liter engine with 105 horsepower, which consumes about 7 liters of fuel. It can work with either a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed automatic. The top version of the gasoline type is designed for all-wheel drive modification of the SUV. It has a volume of 1.8 liters and a power of 152 hp. The most economical option is a diesel engine with a volume of 2 liters and 140 horses. Over 100 km in mixed mode, it consumes only 6.5 liters. Considering its economy, compactness, nimbleness, as well as the suspension, which has been redesigned for urban conditions, the Skoda Yeti can be considered one of the best crossovers for city driving.

No. 6 – Great Wall Hover H3

Price: 739,000 rubles

The latest restyling gave the Chinese car a more solid and aggressive appearance. This consists of an increase in the size of the radiator grille, an updated design of the bumper, as well as a new headlight concept. All this gives the front of the Great Wall Hover H3 a modern and masculine look. When looking at the car from the side, you will not notice any changes compared to its predecessor. At the rear, new lights appeared, and the bumper was equipped with a trim simulating a diffuser.

Under the hood of the Great Wall Hover H3 there may be one of two power units. The first is a 116-horsepower 2-liter engine, which absorbs up to 11 liters within the city and about 8.5 liters on the highway, the second is a 2-liter engine with 177 horsepower, when driving around the city it requires about 13.5 liters per hundred, on the highway - about 10 liters Since the rear of the SUV rests on a dependent spring suspension with a transverse stabilizer, you can be sure that comfort will accompany you on any terrain. This is complemented by reliable crankcase protection and a ground clearance of 240 mm, thanks to which you will not notice any obstacles.

No. 5 – Chery Tiggo 5

Price: 989,000 rubles

The new generation Chery Tiggo 5 has received an updated appearance, thanks to which the developers hope to attract the attention of young people. The car should win the love of potential buyers with the help of modern lighting technology with LED elements, new bumpers and a radiator grille with a more interesting design.

Chery Tiggo 5 is equipped with only one uncontested engine, a 2-liter Acteco engine with a power of 136 horsepower. It can be assisted by a 5-speed manual transmission or a continuously variable CVT. Depending on the terrain, such an engine absorbs from 8.2 to 9.8 liters of fuel per hundred. Due to the fact that the steering mechanism has a rack and pinion structure and is also equipped with a hydraulic booster, driving the car has become even more convenient than before. This is also influenced by the independent McPherson-type suspension layout at the front and rear.

No. 4 – SsangYoung Tivoli

Price: 998,000 rubles

Externally, the Ssangyoung Tivoli looks fresh and meets all crossover fashion trends. What attracts the most attention on the exterior is the radiator grille with a “two-story” design, which goes well with the sharp look of the lighting equipment and the flat roof. If you look at the SUV from the side, you will immediately notice the wheel arches, which can accommodate 16-inch wheels in their depths.

The car is equipped with one of two engines. The first option is a 1.6-liter diesel unit with a power of 115 horses and an appetite of 4.3-5.9 liters of fuel per hundred. Its alternative is a 1.6-liter naturally aspirated gasoline engine, whose performance reaches 128 hp. Such an engine has a larger appetite - from 6.6 to 7.6 liters per hundred. The main advantage of the car, in our opinion, is that the structure of the supporting body consists of 70% high-strength steel. Thanks to this, you can be sure that the Ssangyoung Tivoli will serve you for many years and will not begin to crumble.

No. 3 – Ford Ecosport

Price: 949,000 rubles

The Ford Ecosport takes bronze in our ranking of inexpensive crossovers. This is a subcompact SUV, with which the well-known company plans to reach the widest possible audience. In their opinion, the model is suitable for both young people leading an active lifestyle and retirees who prefer to relax in their country house. When it comes to the exterior, the Ford Ecosport is doing amazingly well. Due to the unusual design of the headlights, radiator grille and branded bumper, the car looks more interesting than its colleagues in terms of form factor.

Ford Ecosport is supplied to the Russian market with two engine options. The first is a 1.5-liter engine of the Dragon family with 123 hp, its alternative is a 2-liter “four” with 148 hp. The base engine is mated to a 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive in both cases. The top version of the unit is paired with an automatic transmission and all-wheel drive system. The body of the Ford Ecosport consists of 80% high-strength metals, so reliability is its strong point. The advantages of the car include the presence of an independent suspension with MacPherson struts at the front. Due to it, bumps and uneven roads will not be reflected on the steering wheel.

No. 2 – Suzuki Vitara

Price: 989,000 rubles

Suzuki Vitara looks fresh and dynamic, so identifying the car in traffic will not be difficult. The model gives off a lean appearance with a sloping roof, sloping bumpers and wide wheel arches. Thanks to the latter, the owner can use 17-inch wheels. An unusual design solution consisting of an inverted radiator grille also adds originality. On its sides there are “squinted” headlights.

On the Russian market, the Suzuki Vitara is available with a non-alternative 120-horsepower 1.6-liter engine. He is assisted by a 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. In both cases, the drive is front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is available as an option. The main advantage of the car is its lightness. The traveling weight of the Suzuki Vitara is 1075 kilograms. However, this did not affect the reliability of the design in any way - the body consists of high-strength steel, and the steering system boasts an electric power amplifier. All this allows the driver to feel confident behind the wheel of the SUV and move comfortably on the road.

#1 – Nissan Qashqai

Price: 988,000 rubles

The ranking of inexpensive crossovers in 2018 in Russia in terms of price and quality ratio is headed by Nissan Qashqai. Even taking into account the fact that the new generation of SUV is practically no different in appearance from the old one, this is the best offer on the market at the moment. Among other crossovers, it looks just as distinctive and is easily identified due to its corporate style called V-motion. Its distinctive features are the “boomerang” running lights and a custom-shaped bumper at the front.

The base engine for the Qashqai is a 1.2-liter engine producing 115 horses. It is paired with a 6-speed manual or continuously variable transmission and consumes up to 6.2 liters of fuel in mixed driving mode. The second engine has a volume of 2 liters and a power of 144 hp. For 100 km it requires about 7.3 liters of fuel. The only 2-liter diesel engine has a power of 130 hp. and is distinguished by its economy - only 4.9 liters per hundred square meters. The Qashqai is the world's first car built on the CMF platform. Its features include a front independent suspension based on MacPherson struts, as well as a rear multi-link system. Thanks to them, bumps on the road are smoothed out, and the driver does not feel them, since the rack and pinion steering mechanism is complemented by electric power steering with a sports driving function.

There are many cars in the world. There are fewer crossovers, but their variety and range is growing, if not day by day, but year by year. For almost every taste, color and budget, there is now a crossover that meets many (though not all) parameters. Each person has their own parameters, of course: price, quality, manufacturer, country of production (also important), on-road and off-road characteristics, and, in the end, dynamics and banal color. And if we won’t talk about the latter within the framework of this article, then we will be only too happy to apply other “lines” to a variety of crossover models.

What do we usually mean by this phrase? Pink cars? No. With various decorations on the body? No. However, without completely excluding both of the above points. The main thing worth noting in this rating is rather a general collective image of a crossover without a menacing “bull-like” appearance, sharp edges, huge protruding body parts like a “kanguratnik” and so on. To put it simply, it’s a kind of rounded body with smooth transitions.

“Women’s” crossovers also usually don’t stand out with impressive characteristics – there’s no reason to. Let's not argue that felt-tip pens have different tastes and colors - and among female drivers there are also lovers of menacing shapes and roaring engines. However, below is a short rating of the most frequently sold cars in the SUV segment on the Russian market, which are often chosen by female drivers.

Of course, this is not a complete list - the top five does not include Nissan Juke, Hyundai Creta, Honda CR-V and many others. Let us also note that some crossovers could confidently be called “female” in previous generations; they “matured” with age and lost the interest of the fair half of humanity. However, the final choice is, as always, yours.

What should a domestic buyer with a limited budget choose? An army of used crossovers is a possible solution, but also possible additional investment in repairs and annual maintenance. And in general, buying a new car is much more interesting than choosing a used one for a long time.

But what to choose if the purchase budget is limited, for example, to 1 million rubles? Who to choose - the Niva and Patriot, proven by millions, the interestingly equipped “Chinese” or the rather modest “Europeans” and “Koreans”? The latest current sales ratings for new cheap crossovers are as follows:

Oddly enough, representatives of the Chinese automobile industry were not included in the TOP5 in principle. The reasons for this are quite simple: low trust of domestic consumers in new and little-known brands, an unstable position in the market even of seemingly well-known manufacturers.

Those who like to apply a ruler to the power parameter pay less attention to the issue of price than others - this is rather a challenge to the public. However, it would be difficult to compile a rating if we take into account, in principle, all the offers on the market - with tuning from studios of all stripes, models “charged” repeatedly, and so on. Therefore - only factory overclocking, only “native” tuning studios. And a minimum of repetitions - we will not take into account several modifications of essentially one model.

Of course, this list can be continued for a very long time: in the first 10 positions of the world power ranking, 8 are occupied by the “Germans” - Mercedes and BMW. But the modest Porsche Cayenne Turbo S with its 550 horsepower, the charged Land Rover Range Rover Sport SVR with the same number of horses, and many others did not make it into the top ten.

How much does such splendor cost? Current prices for new charged crossovers start from 6-7 million rubles for a product of the Bavarian automobile industry.

Oddly enough, a lot of horsepower will not necessarily lead to the finish line. Although most often these concepts are as close as possible. However, aerodynamics plays an important role in acceleration and in the race, and the rating of the fastest crossovers does not completely duplicate the previous rating of the most powerful representatives of the SUV family.

What is considered the fastest? Should we take into account the maximum speed of the crossover, or should we pay attention to the acceleration numbers? The rating will have to use both parameters: strict global standards oblige manufacturers to impose restrictions on electronics. Therefore, in the first place we will put the “maximum speed”, and with the general parameters we will also take into account the acceleration speed to hundreds. We also decided to avoid repetition of the model

As you can see, the rating of the fastest has little in common with the most powerful. However, we note that the Tesla electric crossover has largely not yet reached its potential, and by removing the electronic limiters it would confidently rise to the top.

What is curious: the Bentley crossover is in last place on the list only because the premium British manufacturer has set a strict production quota for different countries. And most of this quota was purchased in Russia shortly after the official start of sales. And the crossover starts at 17 million rubles.

The issue of traffic safety is also at a higher level in relation to crossovers: a higher center of gravity, greater weight (compared to sedans and other cars), a potentially more complex design (all-wheel drive, etc.) must meet a high quality standard.

Compact budget crossovers:

Mid-size crossovers:

  1. Honda Pilot
  2. Nissan Murano

Premium crossovers:

  1. Audi Q5
  2. Acura MDX
  3. Lexus NX

By the way, a gold medal for all test points is not always awarded automatically with the price of the car. For example, the Mercedes GLE almost didn’t reach the “gold” mark.

What should those who want to proudly say “I have a crossover!” do, but not pay for everything that is offered by “the older ones”? When the car is unlikely to ever seriously go off the road, and the owner’s main problem has become the issue of parking. One solution is to purchase a compact (often subcompact) crossover with all its advantages and disadvantages. Depending on the price, configuration, manufacturer and equipment, these cars can become either an excellent companion for a family or a “car for an egoist.”

If you wish, of course, you can include the modest “French” Peugeot 2008, a crowd of “Chinese” of all stripes and controversial cars of the Mini Cooper Countryman level with the KIA Soul. Ultimately, it is up to you to decide and choose.

The last point is not the least important - the issue of refueling has worried and worries all motorists. Modern technologies and modern cars offer many solutions, but history has already shown that even “honest” car manufacturers do not always show true figures: some underestimate carbon dioxide emissions, others repent of incorrect fuel consumption data.

However, today the most effective method of saving fuel (besides the actual “park the car” and all-electric options) are numerous options for hybrid technologies. A car that part of the time does not consume gasoline at all, but is content with electricity from the battery pack, and the rest of the time runs on fuel and recharges the battery, turned out to be a fairly optimal solution.

Why indicate the type of fuel consumed? It’s just that the diesel options just fell just short of the top five: the same modest (but bright and charming Citroen C4 Cactus 1.6 E-HDI and consumption of the same 3.4 liters of heavy fuel has a much more “urban” 92 hp. ).

Bottom line

It is difficult to choose the best among many equals. Choosing worthy comparisons for such different cars is even more difficult. If you agree with the article above, you have your own opinion and your own rating - write a comment.

Whether you're towing your boat to the lake or taking the kids to soccer practice, the right SUV can handle any task. The latest models offer everything from rear-seat entertainment systems to the latest electronic safety features. To make the right choice, think about what you will use most often and, based on this, proceed further. Traditional SUVs tend to favor attributes like towing power and good ground clearance for tackling rough roads, while more modern crossovers (car-based SUVs) are designed for a smoother ride and maximum interior space. In this review we have made a selection of both types of these vehicles, so no matter what you are looking for, you will find it here.

Subcompact class

#1 Honda HR-V

The 2017 Honda XR-V is one of the best contenders for the title of best in this class. What does she have to do with this? For those who have just switched from a passenger car, there is plenty of space in the trunk, despite the size of the car, thanks to the folding “Magic Seats”. There's also plenty of room for four tall passengers, something you won't find in this class. Our wish would be to make the technical interface simpler, but overall the HR-V is a very comfortable car for passengers, with more space than the average subcompact sedan.

#2 Mazda CX-3

The 2017 Mazda TsX-3 is one of the most attractive, enjoyable to drive and sporty cars in this class. It's smaller than other leading compacts, which means space is very limited. But, if you are considering driving pleasure, then this is the best choice. The CX-3 also has one of the best interiors in the class, with superb seats, high-quality materials and an easy-to-use infotainment system that parodies those of more expensive cars like Audi and BMW.

#3 Subaru Crosstrek (Subaru XV)

Body-on-frame SUVs are typically the only go-anywhere, off-road vehicles available, but some small crossovers like this 2017 Subaru Crosstrek buck the trend. It's essentially an Impreza Hatchback with extra ground clearance, different tires and some styling upgrades. The Crosstrek offers some level of off-road capability without the downside of compromising fuel economy. And while the Subaru Crosstrek isn't the fastest car in its class, it still has adequate power for city use and modest fuel economy.

Class Compact

#4 Honda CR-V

The Honda CR-V is one of the smoothest, most streamlined cars in this class, and perhaps one of the overall ones on the market today. The CR-V has plenty of room, offers excellent fuel economy (especially with the optional 1.5-liter turbo engine), and it's relatively quick. Honda offers it at a very competitive price, so you'll likely find it fits within your budget. The car may not be the most exciting or sporty in its segment, but when it comes to comfort, quality and price, it is perhaps the best representative.

#5 Mazda CX-5

Since the old Mazda CX-5 was our favorite, it comes as no surprise that the new, improved, redesigned CX-5 is also our choice. With an interior and driving dynamics that mimic luxury cars, the Mazda CX-5 feels much more expensive than it actually is. Add to that the fact that it's still a very fuel-efficient, family-friendly crossover with plenty of space and modern interior technology, and you have a class-leading compact.

#6 Ford Escape

The 2017 Ford Escape is a strong performer across the board, offering a wide range of options to suit the needs of different buyers. There are turbo engines, plenty of trunk space, and a much improved technology interface with Ford's latest infotainment software. Like its closest rival, the Mazda CX-5, the Escape feels sporty to drive, more car-like than SUV-like. Whether you're looking for an entry-level car or a loaded version with all the bells and whistles, the Ford Escape is worth considering.

#7 Subaru Forester

If you're looking for something basic to carry and would like to avoid a lot of unnecessary bling, the 2017 Subaru Forester is a great choice. It has a fuel-efficient 4-cylinder engine, standard all-wheel drive and solid reliability scores. The Forester also has many great technology and safety options available, such as Lane Departure Prevention, Blind Spot Monitoring, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (side monitoring when reversing).

Midsize class 2-row

#8 2017 Ford Edge

The Ford Edge offers buyers a little bit of everything with its comfortable ride, ample interior space and optional performance-oriented engines. The base engine is attractive for its solid fuel economy, and the optional engines produce impressive power. Recent updates to the technology interface have also given the Edge all the tricks you'll need in this mid-size class.

#9 Kia Sorento

The 2017 Kia Sorento is a good example of why we love midsizes so much. It has many technological features and all the space you need for family travel. The Sorento is available with two or three rows of seating, so you can seat up to 7 passengers. The Sorento's smooth, sleek design and comfortable seats add to the Sorento's appeal, and it comes standard with an excellent warranty on all trim levels.

#10 Nissan Murano

This unique midsize crossover is distinguished by its eye-catching exterior design, high-tech interior and class-leading front seats. It also delivers solid performance, making it feel smaller behind the wheel than it actually is. Don't worry, though, there's plenty of rear bench space for adults or even the largest child seats, although the trunk isn't as spacious as the Ford Edge.

Midsize class 3-row

#11 Honda Pilot

The 2017 Honda Pilot has received many improvements since the debut of the first generation. It now offers one of the best combinations of performance, applicability and technology. The Pilot is comfortable on the road, smooth on rough city streets, and well made, inside and out. For those drivers who want to ditch the minivan but still need three rows of seating, the Pilot offers intelligent space solutions, advanced technology and impressive class-leading fuel economy. The Honda Pilot can even haul up to 2.2 tonnes when properly equipped, making it a great alternative to bulky body-on-frame SUVs.

#12 Toyota Highlander

The 2017 Toyota Highlander has been one of the best cars in this class for some time, and there are many reasons for that. Not only does it offer an optional 3.5-liter V6 that's powerful and fuel-efficient, but a hybrid model is also available, a rarity in the class. The Highlander can tow up to 2.2 tons of cargo when properly equipped, and has an above-average cargo bay. The Toyota Highlander also has pleasantly heavy handling and near-luxury levels of interior comfort.

#13 Mazda CX-9

One of the coolest looking and most modified cars in recent memory, the Mazda CX-9 has an unrivaled combination of size, style and class. It's big, but maneuverable. It's powerful yet fuel efficient. It seems expensive, but the price is still not in the luxury stratosphere. And while the 2,040 liters of boot space isn't the most you'll find in the class, the CX-9's comfortable cargo bay is nonetheless worthy of respect, and fuel economy figures (as well as real-world performance) are impressive. So to speak, this is a driver's 3-row crossover, just what we love and expect from Mazda.

Full Size Class

#14 Ford Expedition

There's been a big shift in the SUV world over the past few years, away from big, body-on-frame, cargo-based family haulers. Crossovers with soft and smooth suspension are more common today. Despite this shift, the Ford Expedition has evolved to create a strong three-row SUV with truck-like traction and serious road presence. The 2017 Ford Expedition has one of the softest and smoothest suspensions in the segment, and more than enough room for adults in the third row of seats. And while fuel economy isn't quite as impressive, the Expedition is able to squeeze decent mileage out of its turbo V6 - 13 mpg combined. Add to this a maximum towing rating of over 4 tonnes and you have an impressive family machine.

Off Road Class

#15 Toyota Land Cruiser

Sometimes you may need an SUV with a very specific skill set, just driving your family to training and back won't be enough. This is where an off-road athlete like the Toyota Land Cruiser comes into play. Full-time all-wheel drive, ground clearance that puts most pickup trucks to shame and Toyota's advanced KDSS (Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System) make the Kruzak eminently capable off-road. The superb ride quality, strong V8 and simple, clean interior structure must make this SUV more attractive to more than just the off-road crowd. Of course, you can own a Land Cruiser and never go off-road. You can also own it and never drive it on the road. This is the beauty of this car with smooth body lines.

#16 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Jeep has been making off-road vehicles for what seems like forever. And, of course, the comfortable, family-friendly Grand Cherokee is unlikely to be its most off-road model, but it can go much further than most of its brethren - especially in Trailhawk trim, which debuted in 2017. More than just an SUV, the Grand Cherokee is quiet, almost luxurious inside, and extremely good on the road. There are also three powertrains to choose from here, which should help when it's hauling something or just making more noise from your driving.

#17 Jeep Wrangler

There aren't many cars left on the planet that are as focused as the 2017 Jeep Wrangler. The Wrangler has two main missions, which it has served for decades: to go as far off-road as possible, and to have a convertible roof. Everything else is secondary. This is not a comfortable, luxurious, well-finished family car. It's just an SUV that wants to go where no one else can. Overall grace obviously suffers as a result, but that's part of what gives the Wrangler its charm. He doesn't worry about rear-seat DVD players or massaging seats. He'd rather drop the roof and go for a drive through the woods, which is probably what you want if you're looking at a Wrangler. And that's why he's still our favorite.

#18 Toyota 4Runner

With off-road options and plenty of useful features, no matter where you take it, the Toyota 4Runner is a leader in its class. Huge ground clearance will get you over rocks and ruts, while the KDSS suspension system and available low-range transfer case can stomach any road surface you throw at them. The forward runner is relatively capable and as a tractor too, it can pull up to 2.2 tons. There are several 4Runner trims available for urban use, but we recommend one of the TRD models to get you off the beaten path.

Lux Compact class

#19 Acura RDX

If you're looking for a luxurious ambiance without the maudlin price premium, the Acura RDX is a great place to start. The richest trims of the RDX typically compete with other luxury crossovers in their base trim levels, without sacrificing comfort or manners. The cabin is large enough for adults to sit comfortably in the back, and the standard V6 engine combines class-leading acceleration with reasonable fuel economy. All the luxury equipment you'd expect to find in this class is available in the RDH, and it's one of the easiest cars to drive thanks to its size.

#20 BMW X3

Some SUV buyers expect their cars to feel massive behind the wheel, but the BMW X3 feels more like a sports sedan than an SUV. Add to this a spacious and well-executed interior, and you have a winning recipe. The X3 is a little more priced than some of its similarly equipped rivals, but if you want something that feels a little different no matter how you drive it, the X3 is worth the money.

#21 Audi Q5

While it may not be particularly flashy or flashy on the outside, the 2017 Audi Q5 certainly has the right equipment where it counts. The base 4-cylinder turbo engine has enough power to keep it competitive in the class, while the optional V6 offers a little more efficiency. The interior features top-end materials, with the sliding rear seat being a unique feature in the class. And the sporty driving nature means you don't have to sacrifice practicality for fun.

#22 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class

One of the newest cars in the segment, the 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLC is a solid performer across the board. The cabin has plenty of room for adults, both front and rear. The styling and finishing touches every luxury standard, and the standard 4-cylinder engine is among the best in class for acceleration and fuel economy. An available AMG model raises the bar with a turbo V6, and the available all-wheel drive on all models means you can consider the GLC suitable for any climate. The GLC doesn't skimp on options either - you can get them of every sort, from a 14-speaker Burmester audio system to 360-degree cameras.

#23 Porsche Macan

The 2017 Porsche Macan is probably one of the best-driving SUVs on the market today. Porsche took the virtues of flamboyant handling and applied them to the small crossover class. Everything about the Macan's interior feels like it's borrowed from the long, illustrious history of cars like the 911 Carrera, and you can still carry a bike if you fold down the rear seats. Thanks to its rounded design and compact dimensions, the Macan is slightly limited in overall cargo capacity, but if you're looking for a driver's car in this segment, this is it.

Luxury Midsize class

#24 Acura MDX

Like the smaller RDH, the 2017 Acura MDH is a luxury SUV without the heavy price tag. The Acura MDX offers three rows of seating, all of which are comfortable and spacious, but be aware that cargo space is very average. Excellent safety ratings, a quiet cabin, a smooth ride and impressive fuel economy round out the MDX's long list of practical strengths, but for a car this big, it's also very sporty.

#25 Audi Q7

Without question, the refreshed 2017 Audi Q7 is one of our top recommendations in the class. Excellent quality finishing and selection of materials make the interior attractive from the moment you step into the car, while the superbly quiet interior on the highway ensures that this will be an excellent car for long trips. The Q7 comes standard with a turbo 4-cylinder engine, but we recommend going with the supercharged V6, which propels the Q7 from zero to 60 mph in 6 seconds—an impressive figure for this class. The V6 also increases maximum towing from 2 to 3.5 tons, which is definitely strong.

#26 BMW X5

The 2017 BMW X5 is one of the most expensive cars in its class, and its trunk volume is less than that of the class leaders. However, we still think it's worth being here. Here you can choose from several different engines, including a turbo six, a turbo V8, a six-cylinder diesel, and even a plug-in hybrid with the ability to travel 22 km on electric power alone. As you'd expect from BMW, there's plenty of high-tech equipment available, such as a night vision camera system and 4-zone climate control. The X5 also comes with four years of free standard maintenance and enough standard options to satisfy almost any driver.

#27 Porsche Cayenne

Because of its impressive size, the 2017 Porsche Cayenne may seem too large to be sporty or agile. But don't let this big German SUV fool you. It's truly impressive - both on the straight and in the corners. Whether you're driving the standard turbo V6 or the powerful turbo V8, the Cayenne has more than enough spark to satisfy anyone with a heavy right foot. Whether you're heading into town, trying to escape the city, or heading out for a stroll through the hills, the Cayenne remains easy to drive. All the luxury features are in order too, with an exquisitely crafted interior and comfortable enough seating for any long journey.

#28 Volvo XC90

With style and sophistication throughout, the 2017 Volvo XC90 is unique in appearance and superb to drive. A common theme among our top recommendations in this class is that the XC90 handles like a much smaller car, and it has an available plug-in hybrid version - two features that give it a wide range of appeal. The second and third rows of seats have plenty of space, and as expected from a Volvo, it has top safety ratings, including a Superior score from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety due to its frontal collision-avoidance system. The XC90 doesn't accelerate as quickly as some rivals or have as much noise insulation as the class leaders, but it still has a lot going for it and is high on our list.

Luxury Fullsize and Flagships

#29 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class

Formerly known as the GL, the 2017 Mercedes GLS is as big as you can get from Mercedes (cargo vans don't count). The GLS has plenty of space for adults in all three rows of seats, and there's no shortage of available luxury equipment. If you fold the second and third rows of seats in the GLS, you get a total of a whopping 2,650 liters of cargo space, which is competitive even in this segment. Notable options include an automatic parallel parking system, ventilated front seats, adaptive suspension, and even a dual-range transfer case for some added off-road prowess. And no Mercedes is truly complete until it has a performance-oriented AMG variant, so the GLS offers the AMG GLS 63, which comes with a 5.5-liter V8 and 577 horsepower.

#30 Land Rover Range Rover

One of the most iconic luxury SUVs on the market, the 2017 Land Rover Range Rover combines extreme off-road capability with a rich interior. Even if it lived its entire life in the city, the Range Rover would be impressive based solely on its smooth 8-speed transmission, quiet cabin and impeccable finishing. But no Range Rover should be relegated solely to city driving. This top-of-the-line SUV can also tackle challenging trails, thanks to its intelligent road feedback system and plenty of ground clearance to tackle big rocks.

In the modern world, a good, high-quality and reliable car is not just a fashion accessory, but a necessity. We all dream of a fast car that will become an indispensable assistant and will attract the attention of passers-by. For any man, his car is an indicator of wealth, courage and self-confidence, and not just a means of transportation. Today we’ll talk not just about cars, but about expensive SUVs that cost tens of thousands of dollars. As it turned out, choosing a cool crossover is much more difficult than an ordinary budget car, because by shelling out a fairly large amount for the purchase, the buyer hopes that the car will contain maximum advantages.

SUVs were not always considered cool; there were times when demand for them fell and users preferred more budget models with lower fuel consumption. Such times occurred around the 2000s. SUVs, which used to be quickly swept off the assembly line, suddenly became irrelevant and were collecting dust in garages. At the same time, the price for them began to fall sharply, and sales stagnated. But as soon as the economy got back on its feet, SUVs again became among the most desirable cars in the world, in particular, cool Chinese crossovers that had not previously received much attention began to be bought up.

Expensive, luxurious crossovers, of course, have never left the top of the ratings. Even when the demand for such cars subsided, they remained a dream for a huge number of drivers, and for many they became a reality. Cool jeeps are created only for owners corresponding to their status, who are willing to spend a lot of money on maintenance and fuel. If we talk about the modern world, then today such cars are in great demand and affordable for many. The market is expanding, now a cool jeep is in the garage of many car enthusiasts and is the main means of transportation for people with high incomes. In 2019, such cars are becoming more and more produced by leading companies such as Maserati, Lamborghini, Bentley and many others. The cost of such a car can start from 200 thousand dollars. Today's variety of luxury cars allows car lovers to argue for months about which car deserves the title of “coolest Jeep.”

Criteria for choosing the coolest SUVs in the world

Today it is very difficult to make the right choice and settle on the best crossover or jeep. All modern options belong to the class of reliable, universal and multifunctional. Each model is unique and has its own set of additional features, so finding the perfect jeep is not easy. Many SUVs are very close in their parameters, it is difficult to compete with such a variety of choices, and the level of coolness is often determined by very subjective parameters.

When choosing the coolest SUV in the world, rely on the technical characteristics to what extent they suit you. Also take into account the prestige of the model and users’ opinions about it. Quite often, prestige is much inferior to quality.

Cool off-road SUVs, what are they?

First of all, an SUV is a jeep that we are all familiar with, only larger in size, with a frame structure. An SUV has two levels of quality, by which it is assessed: comfort and cross-country ability. Initially, users assessed exclusively cross-country ability, because it was on this that the entire system of using such a car was built. Off-road vehicles with high cross-country ability have a frame structure and are equipped with a traction engine, gasoline or diesel type. Also, SUVs are distinguished by a three-door body, the presence of plug-in all-wheel drive, and also have low-wood locks.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT received a 6.4 liter engine that has a power of as much as 475 hp. It feels confident on the roads, easily accelerating to 100 km/h in just 4.8 seconds. The maximum speed of this jeep is 260 km/h, which is not bad for a model in the mid-price category. An excellent option for a large family.

  1. PORSCHE CAYENNE TURBO S

Advantages, disadvantages and pros of the best SUV models of 2017. We've rounded up the most important facts about the ten most popular selling 4WD SUVs.

When compiling the rating, the list of SUVs included a variety of models, from different classes and with different types of bodies. For example, in the interim list compiled by the online magazine AutoBild, 82 models from various manufacturers were considered. Among them were 40 compact models, 27 mid-size SUVs, 25 minivan models.

As before, the sales trend for SUVs is upward, since buyers still prefer practical cars that also have off-road capabilities, as well as increased ground clearance. In addition, SUV owners are attracted by the high seating position, ease of entry and exit from and into the car, better visibility compared to passenger cars, spacious interiors in the vast majority of crossovers, which is due to the large body, and last but not least, a sense of security compared to those or passenger cars, due to the large dimensions of vehicles in this category.

In the first months of sales in 2017, SUVs accounted for 25% of the total number of cars sold in Europe, further proof of their popularity. Of course, in Russia, which is largely influenced by high prices, with the exception of a few crossover models on the market (the same bestseller from Hyundai, called Creta), and this is an axiom.

According to many analysts, this global trend of buyer preferences towards the purchase of pseudo-SUVs and urban all-terrain vehicles should continue in the foreseeable decade, at least until 2027.

However, as noted in the German popular auto publication AutoBild, despite their great popularity, “SUVs” cause only a condescending smile from most knowledgeable people, and it seems they will forever remain nothing more than fashionable toys or, as they are also called, parquet SUVs. Their “off-road” skills are used mainly only to drive onto the curb and avoid getting stuck in a snowdrift caused by a sudden snowstorm. However, the publication continues, crossovers, due to modern all-wheel drive systems and low weight, are able to cope well with moderate difficulties such as slight off-road conditions after a rainstorm, snow-covered paths and other road conditions unpleasant for drivers, in which ordinary passenger cars will be helpless.
