Timing valve clearance correction for Daewoo Matiz. Matiz valve adjustment, possible problems and solutions Daewoo matiz valve adjustment clearances 08

19.11.2021

The valves in the engine of any car need to be adjusted and the Daewoo Matiz is no exception. On any engine, this process has its own characteristics and difficulties. Fortunately, on a standard 0.8 Matiz engine, everything is done quite easily and you can handle it on your own.

What are Engine Valves and Why Adjust Them

Engine valves

A conventional four-stroke internal combustion engine consists of many systems, but its main part is the cylinder block and gas distribution mechanism. Fuel is injected into the cylinder, it is set on fire, rapid combustion presses on the piston.

Fuel (more precisely, a ready-made fuel-air mixture) enters the cylinder through an opening. There is another hole through which exhaust gases exit the cylinder. And these holes are closed by valves - inlet and outlet.

But the engine during operation heats up to huge temperatures of hundreds of degrees and, as we know from the school physics course, thermal expansion occurs - the valves become a little larger. Therefore, the valves of a cold engine must have gaps that are clearly defined by the manufacturer so that during expansion the valve does not get stuck and tightly closes the holes without gaps.

When to Adjust Valves

According to the regulations on Matiz, adjustment should be carried out every 20,000 kilometers. But many delay this process up to 30,000 km or more, which should not be done. In addition to the mileage itself, engine malfunctions may also indicate the need to carry out this procedure.

A characteristic sign that the gaps need to be corrected is always a constant knock from under the hood. It means that the gaps, even when the engine is warm, are too large and the valve knocks during the stroke. But there is also the opposite situation, when the gap is too small, then the engine starts to “troit”. Although, in the case of the Daewoo Matiz, the engine "doubles", since it has only three cylinders.

For inexperienced motorists, it is worth clarifying that “triple” (or “doubling” in our case) means that one of the cylinders is not working. This can be heard both in the changed sound of the engine and in a clearly noticeable drop in power.

Preparation for adjustment

You do not need to be an experienced auto mechanic to set the gaps yourself.

All you need is an instruction (this one, but the official paper one will not hurt), a set of tools (hexagons, screwdrivers, wrenches and a set of special flat probes).

All work is carried out only on completely cold engines. The first step is to remove the Matiz cylinder block cover. To do this, you just need to disconnect the ventilation hose and unscrew a few bolts using a 5 hexagon. It will probably not be so easy to do this, the bolts can become clogged and “stick”, in which case you will have to apply more force or use the miracle tool WD-40. After removing the cover, at the same time check the rubber gasket, if it is damaged, it's time to replace it. After that, you will also have to remove the timing block cover.

How are valve adjustments made?

Now you can proceed directly to the adjustment, it is done in a special way, the procedure for work is described in detail in the official Matiz manual. Using a wrench (you can also raise the front of the car, turn on the 5th gear and spin the wheels with your hands), you need to, focusing on the mark on the crankshaft, combine it with the number 0. In this position, the gaps are checked:

 • Both valves of the first cylinder;
 • Only the intake valve of the second;
 • Only the exhaust valve of the third.

The standard values that Daewoo Matiz clearances should have are: 0.15 for intake and 0.32 for exhaust. These values can be set with an error of 0.02, which is important, since the 0.32 probe is almost impossible to find, there are only 0.3 probes. The clearance is only checked between the nut and the valve stem. If it does not match the values, you need to adjust by turning the locknut a little while holding the screw. Then you need to turn the crankshaft exactly 360 degrees (again focusing on the marks) and adjust the two remaining valves.

There is another adjustment method that is simpler and does not require removing the timing cover. But this method is not according to the instructions, it is less accurate and you can do it only at your own risk. In this case, you need to turn the crankshaft and look at the valve cams, the maximum clearance will be when the cam is pointing down, in this position the adjustment is made.

The Daewoo Matiz car has a fairly small, and therefore economical engine. But sometimes, in the stream it is necessary to step on the gas so as not to fall out of the general mass of motorists. To keep the engine in working condition, it is necessary to check its condition regularly. It is also important to periodically adjust the operation of the GDS system.

At what time is it desirable to adjust the valves on the Daewoo Matiz?

Each internal combustion engine requires adjustment of the clearances of this mechanism. Valve adjustment at Daewoo Matiz is recommended to be carried out every 20 thousand kilometers.

Experts talk about the following factors indicating the need to adjust the valves:

 1. An expanded thermal gap will cause a decrease in lift height and flow area. In this regard, the engine receives less fuel and air.
 2. On the contrary, a reduced thermal gap breaks the tightness of the valve seat in the seat. This can lead to burning of the chamfer of the part, which, in turn, will adversely affect the compression.
 3. The cylinders began to be cleaned of gases worse, and the combustion process of the mixture became of poor quality if the gaps increased.

In the event that the dimensions specified by the technologists are violated in the timing system, the valve stems and the seats of the engine parts wear out. Carbon deposits and damage to parts with springs associated with it can lead to engine failure.

Signs that will help you understand that it is time to make an adjustment:

 • Decreased engine power;
 • A loud knock is heard in the timing area;
 • Interruptions occur in the engine;
 • Periodically there are pops at the inlet / outlet.

If, in the presence of these malfunctions, you do not start repair work in the near future, this will cause serious financial costs in the future.

Therefore, let's look at the procedure for adjusting the Daewoo Matiz valves.

Preparatory stage of work

It is important to know that you only need to adjust the valves with a cold engine.

The tools should include:

 • Wrenches (they are open-ended) - a set;
 • Screwdriver set;
 • Socket set;
 • Imbus keys (set);
 • Measuring probes;
 • Pliers.

To get to the valves, you need to do some preparatory work.

It is necessary to de-energize the battery, observing safety precautions. To do this, disconnect the negative wire from the battery.

To do this, we do the following:

 1. The air duct is attached with a special clamp, loosen it with a flat screwdriver.
 2. We take the filter pipe, which is air, and disconnect it from the air duct.
 3. Remove the hose from the air filter housing.
 4. If the engine of your car has a volume of 0.8 liters, then you need to separate the block of the harness of the internal combustion engine electronic control system from the temperature temperature.
 5. The filter housing is attached to the air intake with three bolts. With a socket head on “10”, we turn them away.
 6. Slightly raise the air intake and voice box, remove the pins from the special rubber pads.
 7. Dismantle the assembly.

Now remove the ignition module.

Adjusting the valves on the Daewoo Matiz without this procedure is almost impossible.

By doing this, we do the following:

 1. We find the fixer and wring it out from the block of the harness of the engine control system.
 2. The coils are attached to the holder of the cylinder head cover, in order to remove them, you will need to unscrew the three bolts with the “tenth” socket head.
 3. Remove the ignition module.
 4. Now remove the throttle body.

This action is also carried out in several stages:

 1. Disconnect the crankcase ventilation tube from the air duct tube.
 2. Also, remove the hose leading to the air filter, and then remove the air duct.
 3. It is required to disconnect all wires from the idle speed regulator. This applies to a 0.8 liter Matiz engine.
 4. The throttle body has a position sensor. We also disconnect the wires leading to it.
 5. Antifreeze must be drained to the minimum mark.
 6. On the hoses that supply coolant to the throttle block, it is necessary to compress the clamps with pliers and disconnect them.
 7. The throttle body and intake manifold have four mounting bolts. They need to be unscrewed with a hex wrench.
 8. Now we can remove the entire throttle assembly.

And the last thing to do right before the adjustment.

When the work is completed, remove the cover from the timing belt. To do this, you need to remove the front fender liner on the right and 4 mounting bolts.

Now there are a few more simple operations to be done:

 1. A vacuum hose is extended to the vacuum booster. It is necessary, with the help of pliers, to clamp the clamp from the edges and move it along the hose.
 2. Remove vacuum supply.
 3. Remove the ventilation crankcase connection from the cylinder head cover fitting.
 4. The screw of the inlet pipe holder must be unscrewed with a hexagon wrench to “5”.
 5. It is necessary to compress the petals of the fixing element of the wires located in the control system of the power unit with a screwdriver. Disconnect the harness from the holder.
 6. With a “ten” socket head, unscrew the bolt that secures the connecting hose bracket and take it to the side.
 7. Unscrew the bolts (8 pieces) that secure the cylinder head with the “fifth” hex wrench and disconnect it.

And now about the main thing: we normalize the valve clearances on the Daewoo Matiz

It is important to take into account the information that for intake valves, the clearance should be between 0.13-0.17 mm, and for exhaust 0.3-0.34 mm. In this space, with some effort, the probe should move.

Next, step by step proceed directly to the adjustment:

 1. With the seventeenth end head, in the direction of the clock, we turn the crankshaft so that the mark on the pulley coincides with the “0” mark on the timing belt cover from below.
 2. In this position, the clearances of the intake / exhaust of the first cylinder, the intake of the second, and the exhaust system of the third cylinder are adjusted.
 3. If you see that the dimensions do not match the ideal recommended by experts, you need to loosen the lock nut with the “12th” key.
 4. The main thing is to simultaneously hold the adjustment screw with a slotted screwdriver.
 5. We insert the probe into the gap and adjust the valve by unscrewing / tightening the adjusting screw until the required values are obtained.
 6. Next, tighten the control nut while holding the adjustment screw parallel with a screwdriver.
 7. It is necessary, by turning the shaft, to achieve a match on the lower camshaft cover, the blue mark converged with the “triangle” at the timing belt on the cover from below.
 8. Now it is necessary to implement clearance regulation: the exhaust of the second and intake of the third cylinder, and the intake / exhaust of the 4th.

As soon as all the valves on the Matiz are adjusted, it is necessary to install all the constituent elements of the engine, in the opposite order from the disassembly.

Before adjusting the thermal clearances on the valves, they need to be reached. Disassembly begins with the removal of the ignition coil unit and the throttle assembly.

To dismantle ignition coil unit , you will first have to move the rubber protective caps from its terminals, and then disconnect the tips of the spark plug high-voltage wires. Then with the “10” head, using an extension cord, you need to unscrew the three fixing bolts that fix the coil block to the cylinder head cover bracket. The block can be removed.

To take off throttle assembly on the Daewoo Matiz 1.0 liter, you must first disconnect the wire terminal on the battery from the "negative" terminal. A slotted screwdriver loosens the tightening of 2 clamps that fix the air duct with the nozzles of the throttle assembly and the air filter housing cover. Then we remove the air duct from the nozzles of the filter cover and the throttle assembly and take the air duct to the side. Disconnect the throttle cable from the drive sector.

Now you need to disconnect the block in which the wires are placed from the throttle assembly connector. To do this, you just need to press on the pad lock, located below. Next, two nuts are unscrewed (key “10”) on the upper mount of the throttle assembly. It is already possible to remove the cable bracket to the throttle actuator from the intake manifold studs.

To top it off, two screws are unscrewed (hex “5”) holding the lower mount of the throttle assembly. The throttle assembly moves from the studs. The adsorber purge hose is disconnected from the fitting on the body of the throttle assembly and the throttle assembly itself is removed. Do not forget to remove the sealing gasket of the throttle assembly flange. Please note that in the Daewoo Matiz 0.8 liter, the throttle assembly is removed a little differently.

After removing the throttle assembly, the dismantling queue was established upper timing belt cover . Compressing with pliers the ends of the clamp for fastening the vacuum brake booster with a vacuum supply hose from the inlet pipeline to the vacuum brake booster, we shift the clamp along the hose. The suction hose can now be removed from the connecting tube. Further, the crankcase ventilation hose is removed from the fitting of the cylinder head cover. Hexagon “5” unscrews the screw securing the intake manifold with the bracket of the connecting tube.

In the next step, disconnect the wire harness holder from the bracket. To do this, it is enough to squeeze the petals of the holder of the wires going to the engine control system with a screwdriver. We turn off the head “10” fastening the bracket of the connecting tube. We take the connecting tube to the side without disconnecting the vacuum brake booster hose from it. We unscrew the eight screws securing the cylinder head cover with a “5” hexagon. The cylinder head cover can now be removed.

We are filming mud guard connected to the right front wheel arch. To do this, dismantle the right front wheel. From the bottom of the car, use a Phillips screwdriver through the hole in the front subframe to unscrew the screw of the bottom fastening of the shield. With a “10” head, we unscrew the nuts of the upper and front fastenings of the shield. Everything — the mudguard is released.

Adjustment of thermal gaps.

After removing the shield on the Daewoo Matiz 1.0, it is already possible to adjust the thermal gaps. To do this, the piston of the first cylinder is set to TDC at the end of the compression stroke. To achieve this, turn the crankshaft clockwise (head to "17") by the pulley mounting bolt until the mark in the form of a cutout on the crankshaft pulley aligns with the number "0" on the lower timing belt cover. It is necessary to look so that the mark on the camshaft pulley is placed opposite the mark in the form of a triangle on the back cover of the timing belt. Having achieved this position of the crankshaft, you can already inspect and adjust the valve clearances in the following order:

Inlet and outlet valves of the first cylinder;

Inlet valve of the second cylinder;

Exhaust valve of the third cylinder.

Use a feeler gauge to check the thermal gap between the valve stem and the adjusting screw. With all this, the probe should move in the gap with little effort. The clearance value must be within the allowable limits of 0.32 ± 0.02 mm for exhaust valves and 0.15 ± 0.02 mm for intake valves.

If the value of the thermal gap does not match the allowable values, then we loosen the lock nut with the “12” key, while keeping the adjusting screw from turning. It is most convenient to hold the screw with a slotted screwdriver. To achieve the required clearance, you need to stick a feeler gauge between the adjusting screw and the valve stem, and then turn the screw with a screwdriver to the appropriate values. After - we tighten the lock nut, while the adjusting screw is held with a screwdriver. At the end of the adjustment, all clearances must be rechecked.

We continue to adjust. Rotate the crankshaft 360° clockwise. With all this, the blue mark of the camshaft pulley should be located opposite the triangular mark on the rear timing belt cover. In this position of the crankshaft, we check and, as necessary, adjust the clearances of the following valves:

Final second cylinder;

intake third cylinder;

Inlet and outlet 4th cylinder.

After completing the adjustment of the thermal clearances of the valves on the Daewoo Matiz 1.0 l, all removed components and parts are installed in the reverse order.

Adjusting Daewoo Matiz valves is a rather troublesome and difficult task. You need to have not only special tools, but also know what valve clearances should be, as well as be able to adjust them. The regulations for technical maintenance of the Matiz internal combustion engine provide for such events every 20,000 km.

According to experts, Daewoo Matiz valve adjustment is necessary for the following reasons:

 • an increased thermal gap causes a decrease in the height of the lift, and, therefore, in the flow area, as a result of which the qualitative filling of the cylinder with a combustible mixture or air decreases;
 • a reduced gap contributes to a violation of the tightness of the valve seat in the seat, which directly affects the compression and causes the chamfer of the part to burn;
 • an increase in the gap in the mechanisms leads to a deterioration in the cleaning of cylinders from gases and makes the process of combustion of the mixture defective.

Violation of technological dimensions in the timing mechanisms leads to wear of the valve stems and seats of the parts. The deposition of soot and the associated malfunctions of spring structures lead to a violation of the operating cycle of the power plant.

The presence of the following signs will help determine the moment when Daewoo Matiz valves need to be adjusted:

 • power drop;
 • loud knock in the timing area;
 • interruptions in the operation of the internal combustion engine;
 • periodic pops in the intake or exhaust tract.

The presence of these symptoms requires immediate intervention, otherwise, breakdowns associated with the replacement of timing units will require significant financial investments.

Preparatory work for valve adjustment Daewoo Matiz

First of all, you need to remember that all adjustment work is carried out on a cold engine. Now we complete the set of necessary tools:

 • a set of open-end wrenches;
 • screwdriver set;
 • set of heads;
 • pliers;
 • a set of imbus keys;
 • set of measuring probes.

The clearance adjustment procedure requires a number of preparatory measures, because it will not be possible to get to the timing units so easily. First of all, disconnect the negative battery cable.

After completion of the adjustment work, all dismantled components and assemblies are installed in the reverse order.

Daewoo Matiz compact small cars are known primarily for their efficiency, which means low operating costs. But in order for the technical potential of the machine to remain at the proper level, it is necessary to periodically inspect and adjust the settings of the GDS mechanisms.

When do you need valve adjustment on a Daewoo Matiz car and why?

Almost any engine, after a certain number of hours or kilometers traveled, requires adjustment of the clearances between the rocker arm and the valve stem. The regulations for technical maintenance of the Matiz internal combustion engine provide for such events every 20,000 km.

According to experts, valve adjustment on Daewoo Matiz is necessary due to the following factors:

 • an increased thermal gap causes a decrease in the height of the lift, and hence the flow area, resulting in a decrease in the quality filling of the cylinder with a combustible mixture or air;
 • a reduced gap contributes to a violation of the tightness of the valve seat in the seat, which directly affects the compression and causes the chamfer of the part to burn;
 • an increase in the gap in the mechanisms leads to a deterioration in the cleaning of cylinders from gases and makes the process of combustion of the mixture defective.

Violation of technological dimensions in the timing mechanisms leads to wear of the valve stems and seats of the parts. The deposition of soot and the associated malfunctions of spring structures leads to a violation of the operating cycle of the power plant.

The presence of the following signs will help determine the moment when valve adjustment is necessary on a Daewoo Matiz car:

 8. Remove throttle assembly.

Final preparations

After implementing the points described above, you need to remove the top cover of the timing belt drive. To do this, dismantle the fender liner from the right front wheel arch and unscrew the four bolts securing the cover with a wrench to "10".
