Ground clearance of Octavia A7. Technical characteristics of the new Skoda Octavia, ground clearance, dimensions, dimensions of the Skoda Octavia in the new A7 body

01.09.2023

Skoda Octavia can be confidently called the most popular representative of the Czech automobile industry: the total production volume of its 3 generations exceeds 5 thousand units. This model accounts for about 40% of all Skoda sales, and in Russia it is surpassed in sales volume only by the state-owned Rapid. Needless to say, creating such a high-quality car based on a golf-class platform is a truly brilliant idea. But whether the planned update of the Octavia until the 2017 model year turned out to be brilliant - find out in our review!

Design

In life, the restyled car looks much better than in the photo, which even the developers themselves admit. It differs from its predecessor primarily in the presence of all-LED optics. In the front part of the body, original headlights with a new line of running lights appeared, which look very impressive at late times of the day. The headlights with luminous notches are divided into 2 blocks specifically to visually make the radiator grill longer. The latest LED optics are effective, but cannot boast rotating lenses like bi-xenon headlights - the beam shape changes only by turning on/off the diodes in the chip.

In the center of the false radiator grille there is a plastic panel that hides the active cruise control radar (available in expensive trim levels). In addition, in front there is a bumper with expressive air ducts made in the form of honeycombs. There are no special changes on the side, but at the rear the design of the lights and bumper has changed, which has acquired a long horizontal rib. In general, the outlines of the car remained the same. Despite the modernization, it’s still impossible to say that the new product is prettier than the old version, but it’s certainly worth giving a huge plus for all-LED optics.

Design

The Octavia 2017 is based on a modular MQB design: at the front it has MacPherson struts with an aluminum subframe, and at the rear there is a multi-link suspension (for modifications whose power is above 150 hp) or a semi-independent beam. All new liftbacks and station wagons intended for sale in Russia are offered with a package for bad roads - it includes springs and shock absorbers that increase ground clearance by 1.5 cm - up to 15.6 cm versus 14 cm for the European version. As a result of the update, the rear track of cars with a 1.6-liter MPI engine and a 1.4-liter TSI engine has grown by 2 cm, and in the version with a 1.8-liter TSI engine it has become larger by 3 cm, which, however, did not affect ride comfort in any way. For modifications with all-wheel drive, the diameter of the rear hub bearing has increased.

Adaptation to Russian conditions

Like its predecessor, the Octavia 2017 is quite suitable for both good and bad Russian roads, which is due to its thoughtful design and optimal ground clearance for this class of car. If you have all-wheel drive (now installed on liftbacks), the car can be safely used not only in the city, but also outside it. In order not to freeze in the harsh Russian winter, the new model provides heating for the front seats, steering wheel, windshield and exterior mirrors, as well as three-stage heating for the rear sofa.

Comfort

At first glance, it seems that everything in the cabin is the same as before, but upon closer examination, changes are noticeable. The abundance of gloss on the center console is immediately striking - in particular, on the dual-zone climate control control unit. The console is decorated with a 9.2-inch touchscreen of the multimedia complex (in the top version), devoid of physical keys - above it there are air duct deflectors with a silver edging. The most affordable versions have a simpler display - with a diagonal of 6.5 inches versus the previous 5. Another noticeable innovation is mother-of-pearl plastic and contour LED lighting on the inside of the doors, which makes the interior more elegant and “expensive.” Atmospheric lighting in 10 different colors is a privilege of the top-end configuration, as is leather upholstery. In the “base” the seats are trimmed with regular fabric.

The driver's seat is very comfortable - the seat has lumbar support and an optional position memory function. Both the first and second rows of seats are quite spacious; rear passengers have two USB connectors for charging gadgets and a 230-volt socket (optional). The steering wheel is a multifunctional 3-spoke, with radio and telephone controls, and the instrument panel is presented in the form of two analog “wells” of the speedometer and tachometer with an information display in the middle. The driver also has a key and smartphone organizer, a comfortable center armrest and a cooled glove box. The Octavia 2017 trunk is the most spacious in its segment. The liftback has a cargo compartment volume of 568 liters, and if you fold the back of the rear sofa, it increases to 1558 liters. (for the station wagon 588-1718 l.)

For the safety of the driver and passengers of the restyled model, an expanded list of electronic assistants is responsible, including systems for monitoring blind spots (Blind Spot Detect), monitoring compliance with road markings, monitoring the distance to the vehicle ahead (Front Assist), assistance when leaving reverse parking (Rear Traffic Alert) and active cruise control with a speed limiter (not in all versions), capable of operating even in city traffic jams. The initial configuration has only two front airbags, the more expensive version has front side airbags, and “curtains” appear in the top version. Driver's knee and rear side airbags are available at extra cost.

For Octavia 2017, 4 new “multimedia” are available: Swing, Bolero, Amundsen and Columbus - the last two have built-in navigation. All multimedia systems, with the exception of the basic Swing, have touch keys. Each infotainment system supports CarPlay, MirrorLink and Android Auto technologies and is compatible with any mobile device. The Bolero and Amundsen systems are equipped with an eight-inch display, the Swing has a 6.5-inch display, and the top-end Columbus is equipped with a huge 9.2-inch screen. The performance and sound quality of any of them does not raise any questions.

Skoda Octavia Technical specifications

Ground clearance or ground clearance Skoda Octavia, as for any other passenger car, is an important factor on our roads. It is the condition of the road surface or its complete absence that makes Russian motorists interested in the ground clearance of the Skoda Octavia and the possibility of increasing ground clearance using spacers.

To begin with, it’s worth saying honestly that real ground clearance of Skoda Octavia may differ significantly from what is stated by the manufacturer. The whole secret is in the method of measuring and where to measure ground clearance. Therefore, you can find out the real state of affairs only by arming yourself with a tape measure or ruler. Official ground clearance of Octavia amounts to 156 mm for 4x4 versions, this figure is 153 mm, and for the charged Octavia RS the clearance is only 127 mm.

Some manufacturers use a trick and declare the amount of ground clearance in an “empty” car, but in real life we have a trunk full of all kinds of things, passengers and a driver. That is, in a loaded car the ground clearance will be completely different. Another factor that few people take into account is the age of the car and the wear and tear of the springs—their “sagging” due to age. The issue can be resolved by installing new springs or purchasing spacers for sagging Octavia springs. Spacers allow you to compensate for spring subsidence and add a couple of centimeters of ground clearance. Sometimes even an inch of curb parking makes a difference.

But you shouldn’t get carried away with “lifting” the ground clearance of the Skoda Octavia, because spacers to increase ground clearance are focused only on springs. If you do not pay attention to the shock absorbers, the travel of which is often very limited, then independently upgrading the suspension can lead to loss of controllability and damage to the shock absorbers. Great in terms of cross-country ability ground clearance Skoda Octavia in our harsh conditions this is good, but at high speeds on the highway and in turns there is serious sway and additional body roll.

It is worth noting that ground clearance of Skoda Octavia A5(especially European-assembled cars) is generally 140 mm.

Video about the possibility of increasing front clearance.

Any car manufacturer, when designing the suspension and choosing the ground clearance, looks for a middle ground between handling and cross-country ability. Perhaps the simplest, safest and most unpretentious way to increase clearance is to install wheels with “high” tires. Changing wheels makes it easy to increase the ground clearance by another centimeter.
Do not forget that a serious change in ground clearance can damage the CV joints. After all, the “grenades” will have to work from a slightly different angle. But this only applies to the front axle.

Yesterday I finally performed an interesting experiment. To find out the real ground clearance of the Kia Ceed SW 2010 and the new Skoda Octavia Combi A7 2014.
Fortunately, the old car has not yet been sold, and the new one is in stock.

To test, I prepared plastic bottles of different heights. For softness, wrap the cut tops with tape. I prepared the bottles a long time ago, somewhere in the snowless winter. I checked the cars in garages, on more or less smooth asphalt.

The results of the experiment, to be honest, simply “killed”!
The actual ground clearance of the Octavia A7 Combi is less than 140 mm.
The actual ground clearance of the Kia Ceed SW 2010 is more than 140 mm, but less than 150 mm

Cars, both with full tanks. One driver checked the tires - normal.

I checked it this way: I filled the bottles halfway with water so that the wind wouldn’t blow them away, placed them two meters apart, and drove in first gear, slowly, over them. So that the bottles pass exactly under the middle of the car in the direction of travel.

So, let's start!
First - Kia Ceed SW

Mmm-yes-ah..
And why bother with bottles “from 170”... Only the 140 mm bottle was left standing. 150, 160 and so on - all fell down. That is, the actual ground clearance is more than 140 mm and less than 150 mm.
Anyway. After all, we are not particularly worried about selling it. Fortunately, we bought the most super cool thing - the Skoda Octavia Combi, A7, on the latest universal MQB platform, and even with the supposed “Package for bad roads”, which increases the ground clearance of cars assembled for Europe.

So, start:

All the bottles are there... I couldn’t believe my eyes. I lifted everything again, added water for weight so that it wouldn’t deflate, and again, carefully, passing a row of bottles strictly under the middle of the car. No miracle happened. All the bottles have been knocked over.

That is, six months of choosing a normal car, with ground clearance at least a couple of centimeters more than that of the Kia Ceed, is down the drain.
The actual ground clearance of the Skoda Octavia Combi A7 is less than 140 mm.
Like, a car for Russia...

I didn't agree at first. With this situation, yes, for 1.2 lemons! After all, I was focusing specifically on the increased ground clearance of the Skoda. Yes, and the picture in car dealerships was very captivating, where they placed a box under the front bumper with large numbers of 21 centimeters.

I posted on the Russian Skoda website - how can I find out the equipment of the car by VIN code? Like, maybe they mistakenly slipped me a car assembled for Europe? That is, does this version of the car even have a package for bad roads?

They responded quickly - contact the dealer!
There was no response to a repeated letter explaining the situation. Skoda's vaunted and responsive 24/7 customer service (mail: [email protected]).
This means that it was not for nothing that I did not believe the fantastic stories of the production manager about the truly super service of after-sales support for Skoda.

I sent the problem to the dealer who sold me such a car. Issuing dealer (four page list with PR numbers and explanation). From which, in particular, it follows:

UC7 - Rear shock absorbers, increased ground clearance

That's all! There is no explanation or explanation why my ground clearance is less than 140 mm, although the car is for sale with a declared ground clearance of 155 mm.

By the way, about the additional equipment engineer - in my car there is an item “1SK - additional crankcase protection and protection of the bottom from stone impacts,” that is, there is NO NEED to treat the bottom of the car with dinitrol! One might say, he gave 18 thousand rubles just like that.

Since there is no answer from the dealer, we will get the Skoda itself.

Without delay, I called the Skoda hotline - 8 800 555 01 01. The call, by the way, is free - not a penny was charged on the cell phone for 11:50 minutes of conversation.

The hotline answered - the ground clearance of Skoda Octavia Combi A7 cars is 164 mm. We connected with Zlata's senior manager Andrey Kuporosov. After some arguing (the senior manager said that the ground clearance of the Skoda is 155 mm, so the hotline is taking a break, to which she could not object) we agreed that we should drive up and have a look. Okay, let's go, then we'll add what and how.

In the meantime, I re-read several forums on Skoda. More advanced countries are Ukraine and Belarus, where the A7 has been sold for a long time. It turns out that the original engine protection does not reduce the ground clearance by a millimeter.
I'm very curious, how did I do this?

By the way, when parking near a house where there are high curbs, I almost tore off the bumper (plastic, as they later said in Zlat), and stopped two centimeters away. The front parking sensors don't see such curbs! On the Kia Ceed, in such cases, the rubber skirt at the bottom of the bumper only wrinkled slightly. These are the “21 centimeters” in front...

05/23/14, Fri.
I went to Zlata. Senior manager. Showed him the actual clearance on the bottles. He managed to see that the crankcase protection was knocking down the bottles. To the question-statement - the sold car does not meet the stated parameters:
- Do you want to get rid of the car? Or what?
I didn’t immediately realize whether it was possible to return the car, interesting?
So far I have answered - I need a car with 155 mm ground clearance. And not with 130 mm.
- remove the protection, and it will be 155 mm. But we do not recommend driving without protection.

This is the situation. Skoda is not to blame! And he doesn’t deceive in the slightest! Drive without protection and you will be happy.

Zlata sells similar protections, composite ones, separately, for 7125 rubles. I looked. Good defense. Only in terms of stamping it is very thick - probably 7 centimeters. And, although it is placed deep into the car (visible by the mounting holes), a couple of centimeters remains “outside”. They take away the clearance.

I did not understand and did not agree with such a “smart” protection design. I searched the internet for protection all evening. There are dozens of companies producing protection for Octavia! And not a single one was found that guaranteed “no reduction in ground clearance.”

Still searching..

05/26/14, Mon.
I wanted to call my manager and ask how much it would cost to return a car for six days. Then I remembered my search for a new car, all these - here it’s narrow, there - consumption is 10 liters on the highway, here - no trunk... that is, there’s nothing to take, actually, I didn’t dare to bother yet. We will promote Skoda itself. The car must have the normal declared ground clearance, the same 155 mm. And the fact that some option (and an expensive one at that!) suddenly and without warning fundamentally changes the declared parameters of the car is already a problem for Skoda.
