The younger 2.4 engine has its own unpleasant features. So, he is susceptible to heat stroke. Even a short overheat will cause the aluminum cylinder head, as they say, to “stand up like a house.” Therefore, you need to monitor the temperature and antifreeze level. And this is not just reinsurance. The engine is characterized by leaks from the cooling system pump - it was replaced under warranty. The work costs on average 3,000 rubles, and the water pump itself costs from 3,000 to 9,000 rubles. To protect against overheating, it is also recommended to clean the radiator more often. Does the fan start to work, almost without stopping? So it's time. If the radiator itself has died for a long time, replacement will cost a pretty penny. Prices range from 8,000 to 24,000 rubles.

Like the “big brother”, on 2.4 liter engines with mileages under 100 thousand, the problem of oil consumption may arise - from one to two liters per 10 thousand. But for different reasons. By this time, the piston rings are usually coked. Replacing them together with valve stem seals costs approximately 30,000 rubles. By this time it is usually time to replace the engine mounts. The part costs at least 4,000 rubles, the original is exactly twice as expensive.

Among the common faults, we note the short life of oxygen sensors (6,000-10,000 rubles). Sometimes owners of both modifications of the Camry complain about problems starting the engine. There may be several reasons. The first is a long-lived fuel system pressure regulator costing an average of 7,500 rubles. It happens that the engine does not start at all, the fuel pump does not turn on, and the computer does not display any errors. The culprit is water that gets under the fuse box due to design features. To prevent trouble, it is better to treat the wires with a water-repellent lubricant.

Not for sport

The 40th Camry was equipped with three gearboxes. Five-speed manual transmission is available only on the 2.4 engine. For quite a long time it does not remind of itself, but after 60 thousand kilometers, drivers sometimes begin to experience difficulties with changing gears. An alarm bell indicates the need to change the clutch driven disc (7,000-11,000 rubles).

Five-speed automatics usually don't have any serious problems, but the six-speed automatic transmission, which is combined only with the V6, can bring surprises. The main drawback is that the machine is not designed for such a herd of “horses” under the hood. And if you are used to driving, as they say, “slippers on the floor,” then the initially happy story of your “Camry” will probably end in expensive repairs. “Racing” leads to rapid wear of the clutches, overheating of the oil... When overhauling, mechanics almost always blame the torque converter. Restoration will cost, at best, 80 thousand rubles, and most likely more than a hundred.

The design of the suspension as a whole does not cause headaches, but there is usually enough work on “little things” after 50 thousand mileage. Most often you have to change bushings and stabilizer struts - 500 and 2500 rubles. The most expensive parts, including shock absorbers, usually last a long time - up to 150-200 thousand km. However, there are nuances in the suspension design that should be taken into account when diagnosing the selected vehicle. To replace the lower front suspension arm, you need to hang the engine - as a result, after a seemingly ordinary procedure, your wallet will be empty by 17-22 thousand rubles. By the way, if you prefer exclusively original spare parts, you should know that levers are sold only assembled for an average of 7,000 rubles.

Finally, you should strain your ears when turning the steering wheel. A clearly audible knock indicates a faulty steering shaft. Some managed to change it under warranty at another 70-80 thousand mileage. Those who are late will have to pay about 10 thousand rubles for the work along with the shaft itself. But a new non-original crosspiece costing 1000 rubles can save you. Sometimes the power steering starts to howl - it’s time to check for fluid leaks. In most cases, at the end of the first "hundred" it is necessary to change high-pressure hoses or seals. And this is another 5000-6000 rubles.

By the way, owners of an American-made Camry have encountered a very unpleasant effect of the gas pedal “sticking”. Toyota issued a recall on this issue twice - they changed the mats and the pedal itself, which can now be bought for 7,000-10,000 rubles.

Internal discomfort

The weak point of the Camry is the paintwork. Thin layer scratches easily and after numerous washes the body no longer looks so attractive. But traces of rust are not visible even on ten-year-old specimens.

I will compare the Camry only with the Mazda 3 (previous body) So, having ridden the Matryoshka for 1.5 years, bringing it to the technical level. condition to almost perfect, and by the way, without knowing grief at all, no matter what in terms of those. service, and in terms of its reliability, I decided to change the car. On some fine day, drinking morning coffee in the office, while looking at advertisements for cars. ru, got excited about the idea of ​​changing the car, because... At the same time, I realized that I was simply tired of Mazda, and the pleasant emotions from using it were gone. Somehow, the type of position seemed to impose the opinion that the car was still for a student, but I had already graduated from college, and it had become somehow small, and my colleagues at work were already all driving cars of a higher class... In In general, I played a complex of stereotypes and I decided to put the nesting doll up for sale.
Then came the agony of choice, there was everything, I was almost ready to take the Honda Accord exclusively 2.4 liter, again in the previous body, but then I decided to ask my friend’s opinion regarding the Honda, so to speak, to confirm the correctness of the choice, and then the denouement is coming... a friend offers me to buy a Kamryukha in the back of a V40.
To be honest, I didn’t even think about considering this option, the price made me lick my lips pleasantly, BUT the equipment... hmmmm.... 2.4 liter manual transmission!!!, velor interior!!!, mileage 145 thousand!!! In general, I took a couple of days to think about it. In the process of making a purchase decision, a friend guaranteed me that I would not go wrong with the choice, with all the ensuing “snot” of the joy of ownership, that the previous owner was his colleague from work, that he had the entire service history in the palm of his hand, at the same time This guarantees that it is not broken or painted. In general, I was stingy and decided, TAKE IT.
I saw it live only on the day of registration, omitting the other details associated with this, so I did the diagnostics with the previous owner while talking on the phone, outwardly there really were no flaws in the body, with the exception of chips on the hood and bumper, but so on Of course, I immediately fell in love with her appearance.
As a result, what we have: the words of the previous owner “almost perfect technical condition!
First impressions of the trip and slight disappointment: it became clear that something needed to be changed in the suspension, because... clanking on the bumps became clearly audible. The interior is, to put it mildly, miserable, the combination of an incomprehensible dark gray-brown-violet color of the seat trim with door panels, coupled with the aluminum-colored central part of the dashboard with blue backlighting of the radio, and LIGHT BROWN inserts in the doors and the center console under the gearshift knob simply killed me on the spot. This designer should be fired. The dynamics of the car compared to Mazda are, of course, night and day! Still, 2.4L versus 1.6L. gives a pleasant feeling of security when overtaking, but still did not get any noticeable acceleration. Either the car itself is heavy and the engine is too weak for it, or there are problems with the engine.
Now for the good stuff:
A healthy interior, my son and wife feel extremely at ease, a comfortable driving position, and with my height of 176 and weight of 94 kg, I settled in almost immediately, adjusting the seat to suit myself. It turned out that he lowered it to the very bottom. The steering wheel was lowered to the same position. To justify getting behind the wheel, I drove from St. Petersburg to Cherepovets back and forth in one sitting - something like 800 km, when I got out from behind the wheel, I felt like I could have driven the same distance.
In principle, the acoustic comfort in the cabin suits me quite well. You don’t have to strain your vocal cords even at speeds over 200. If you find fault in this regard, then of course the wheel arches have poor noise, because The noise from the tires is quite clearly audible in the cabin. The velor is of course pleasant to the touch, BUT damn the equipment without a warmer is of course blasphemy. Overall very comfortable!
Dynamics, I have conflicting feelings here. I’ve owned this car for almost a year, so during this time I’ve already gotten a good feel for the car, and sometimes you’re even surprised at its quick acceleration. BUT it either drives or doesn’t drive, that’s what it’s connected with, I still haven’t figured it out, maybe the car behaves like a person with mood swings characteristic of him... If the engine is constantly kept in the range of 3-4500 rpm, then the speed satisfied quickly.
The average speed range on the highway with which I move every day is 140-180 km/h, as described above, the noise does not bother the ear, it behaves quite steadily in the lane. As they say, what Russian doesn’t like driving fast, but driving fast has to be paid for in oil consumption and increased gas consumption.
Average gasoline consumption under the condition of 18 km city with traffic jams, 30 km highway - 10 l!!! If you operate the car only in city mode, then the consumption will remain at the level of 12 liters. With fairly measured driving on the highway, this was especially shown by the trip to Cherepovets, consumption dropped to an indecent 7.1 liters. The speed only exceeded 130 km/h several times, with an average range of 110-120
But damn, what a simple suspension it has... When I drove the Mazda, I got pure pleasure from steering, after all the replaced levers and shock absorbers with springs. She handled the road superbly! With the Camry, of course, in this regard, there is a problem, expressed in decent rolls in turns, although there is no swaying during straight-line movement. In general, the suspension itself is comfortable and elastic.
The result was a very nice-looking car, with an ugly interior and sometimes unclear dynamics.
Expenses:
Coming back, the car was purchased without diagnostics, so knocking noises were heard in the suspension. As a result, this resulted in the stabilizer bushings. Because The mileage is already considerable - 145 tyr I immediately changed additional shock absorbers and, just in case, the stabilizer struts. The result is pleasant silence when hitting potholes.
Shock absorbers - 2500 rubles per piece. Stabilizer racks - 1200 pcs. Stabilizing bushings. - 300 rubles Work with camber - I don’t remember anymore. At the same time, front pads - 2500 rubles. I don't remember the cost of the work...
Then there was a problem with the brakes, 3/4 of the pedal stroke the car did not brake at all, only at the very bottom. The result was jammed rear pads on the guides and, as a result, overheated discs.
Discs (non-original) - 1900, Pads (non-original TRV) - 1500, set of manual calipers, new guides and brake pads (non-original) - 1500 rub. The rear brakes with all the caliper rebuilds and other procedures were changed within 7 hours. Work - 9000 rub.
After a while I was in the front right. the wing is being rebuilt by the bus. Bumper and fender for repair and painting. And because I already had the idea in my head of painting the face to prevent chips, but this accident was, on the contrary, a joy for me, so to speak, an impetus to action. Work with all materials - 28,000 rub.
After some time, a slight knocking sound appeared on the left side at idle when the clutch was disengaged. As a result, I changed the clutch assembly, bearing, fork, basket, disc and bolts - 7500 RUR, labor - 9000 RUR.
After the winter, diagnostics revealed broken silencers in the fist on the right side, in the rear suspension, and there seemed to be noise from the front hubs. bearings. In general, I ordered all the levers - 1800рх2 and 1800рх2, except for the adjustable ones, rubber bands in the fist - 300рх4 each, so we are preparing to go to the service center next weekend. Well, just in case, wheel bearings - 1200 rubles per piece, still there is no noise from the wheels at speed, if I change anything later.

There is, of course, one more painful nuance - eating too much oil. Consumption is 1.5l per 7500km. Judging by the thematic forum, the 2AZ-FE engine has the following property - it EATS oil (the same for me, damn BMW), for some it is to a greater extent, and for others it is to a lesser extent, or it does not eat it at all. At first I thought that everything was connected with Castrol oil, they say it is very toxic. As a result, having switched to Total 5v40, the situation has not changed one bit. Diagnostics showed 13.5-14.0 in each cylinder.
So there is only 1 problem left to solve - oil consumption.
As of today, the mileage is already 180,000 km. So, I’m happy with the car, the only thing that upsets me is the problem described above, which I still haven’t solved... By the way, I’m already used to the interior and the diarrhea-colored inserts ala wood don’t bother me.
In general, I wrote as best I could... I tried to avoid spelling and punctuation errors as much as possible. If something else appears, I’ll add it, but just ask. I'll post a photo a little later, the main thing is that I decided to write a review.
